Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 major differences between Silent
00:14
Hill 2 and its remake.
00:22
Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo

00:30
An Expanded Silent Hill
00:37
One of the first big changes veteran players might notice will occur as you step foot into
00:41
the town of Silent Hill.
00:43
Whereas the original Silent Hill 2 was more linear in where you could go, the remake is
00:48
putting a bigger focus on exploration.
00:51
As you complete objectives, you will have to venture back out into Silent Hill's foggy
00:54
landscape, forcing you to endure more terrors despite whatever backtracking you wind up
01:00
doing.
01:01
On top of that, the way Silent Hill has been arranged makes the game feel more like, well,
01:05
you know, a town, and not just a bunch of objects coincidentally placed to form a path
01:10
for you to follow.
01:20
Interior Renovations
01:29
Along with the new layout of Silent Hill comes some changes to even indoor areas.
01:33
OG fans will recognize just about every room inside buildings, but what's different in
01:38
Silent Hill 2's remake is the layout.
01:41
Rooms have been rearranged in a way that makes more logical sense to what one would see in
01:45
the real world.
01:46
Not only does this make Silent Hill seem more like a town that could actually exist, it
01:51
also provides a fresher experience for veterans by changing how some puzzles might need to
01:56
be solved.
01:57
Speaking of which…
02:05
The Puzzles
02:16
Puzzles have seen a bit of remixing for the Silent Hill 2 remake as well.
02:20
In terms of purpose and solutions, almost every puzzle is relatively the same.
02:25
However, the big difference here between the original Silent Hill 2 and the remake is in
02:30
structure.
02:31
As we mentioned earlier, you will have to scurry to and from various locations within
02:35
Silent Hill.
02:36
Part of the reason behind this is how some pieces to a puzzle may be scattered across
02:40
other areas.
02:41
In other words, it might take you longer to solve them than it did back on PlayStation
02:45
2, and you might have some additional steps to follow more than you did back in 2001.
02:58
Combat
03:04
On the surface, there doesn't seem to be much difference in Silent Hill 2's combat.
03:08
On the contrary, there is a vastly different take here that you simply cannot see without
03:13
playing it, much less watch a playthrough.
03:15
The original game was very much true to the survival horror genre, making combat more
03:20
as a desperate means of self-defense, and less of a necessity.
03:24
In the remake, enemies are much more hostile than they ever were, meaning you have to confront
03:29
the monsters.
03:30
And no, flailing your weapon around like a madman and mindlessly attacking is not going
03:34
to keep James alive.
03:36
Enemies can dodge too.
03:42
Enemy Variety
03:49
In an effort to keep combat from getting stale, developer Bloober Team aimed to rework enemies,
03:54
their attacks, and their general placement in each area.
03:57
If you want to make it out of Silent Hill alive, you're going to have to learn how
04:00
to adapt to each combat scenario, which enemies to prioritize, and how to effectively dodge
04:06
their attacks.
04:07
In a sense, it's almost like how a lot of action RPGs like Dark Souls play.
04:12
So just because you took out a lying figure in a mannequin with no problem doesn't mean
04:17
you can do the same for nurses and flesh lips.
04:25
No Loading Screens
04:27
Hold your horses for a minute.
04:41
While the lack of loading screens is a nice advancement in today's technology, this
04:45
has actually added a new layer to Silent Hill 2's gameplay.
04:49
You may be able to freely enter and exit most areas without interruptions now, but that
04:53
does not mean you are the only one benefiting from this once ancient hurdle.
04:58
Enemies can also enter and exit from certain areas, and even follow you into other areas
05:04
if you try to run away.
05:05
That said, if you are trying to solve a puzzle or search for collectibles in a specific area,
05:10
settle your fights first before you go wandering.
05:19
Angela and Eddie
05:29
With the drastic changes in technology between 2001 and 2024, it should go without saying
05:34
that every character in Silent Hill 2 looks different than they did more than 20 years
05:39
ago.
05:40
But while most of the cast look relatively the same, if not better than before, others
05:44
have gotten really weird about Angela and Eddie.
05:48
Both characters seem to have been given even more full faces than they had before.
05:53
Angela's cheeks are a bit more noticeable, while Eddie looks less burly and more rotund
05:58
than before.
05:59
Even so, Silent Hill 2 does star a cast of normal people, not action movie stars like
06:06
Leon, Jill, and Ada in Resident Evil.
06:14
Maria
06:22
While we're on the subject of character changes and the cast looking like normal people, Maria
06:26
saw a substantial redesign here.
06:29
Her original iteration leans somewhat heavily into her sexy nature, with her revealing red
06:34
cardigan, skirt, and boots.
06:36
The remake still retains some of that sex appeal, while being a bit more classy and
06:41
less revealing.
06:42
Her cardigan has been replaced with a red jacket, though her appearance still captures
06:47
that unsettling feeling that her original iteration carried.
06:57
The UFO Ending
07:03
We promise we won't go too deep into the details regarding endings.
07:07
If you want to go and see them for yourself, you really should go play the remake.
07:11
It's great, and all of the original endings are present in the remake, well except for
07:15
that one that was exclusive to the PS2 Greatest Hits version, but that's besides the point.
07:20
However, the UFO ending received a major alteration.
07:24
In the original game, James encounters a UFO piloted by an alien and Henry from the first
07:31
Silent Hill game, and Henry is still rendered in all of his PS1 glory.
07:36
Henry and the alien zap James before dragging him into the spacecraft.
07:40
Now what does the remake change?
07:42
We'll just say this, Henry is no longer in Silent Hill 2.
07:53
Two New Endings?
08:01
In addition to the new UFO ending, Silent Hill 2's remake boasts two entirely new
08:06
endings for players to discover.
08:08
We won't say what happens in either of these, so you can experience them for yourself, but
08:13
if you want to go for these, you will have to beat the game once and unlock New Game
08:17
Plus.
08:18
On your new playthrough, you will have to obtain specific items depending on which ending
08:22
you want to go for.
08:24
One of these two endings even has an additional requirement for reaching the In Water ending
08:29
first before attempting another playthrough.
08:32
Think you can figure it out for yourself?
08:45
Now tell us, how are you liking Silent Hill 2's remake?
08:47
I'm really impressed personally, but let us know down in the comments below, and be
