Defining "Zulm" (Injustice/Wrong) in the context of Faith.

Description:
Does every sin we commit disqualify our faith? In Sahih al-Bukhari 32, we see the Sahaba in a state of great distress. When the Quranic verse was revealed stating that only those who "believe and confuse not their belief with wrong (Zulm)" would be safe, the Companions were terrified. They asked, "Who among us has not done wrong to themselves?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) immediately cleared their confusion by explaining that the "Zulm" mentioned in this specific verse isn't about everyday sins, but about the "Great Injustice"—Shirk.

Key Lessons & Insights:

Context Matters: This Hadith teaches us that the same word in the Quran can have different meanings based on context. While "Zulm" usually means any sin or injustice, here it specifically refers to the violation of Tawheed (Monotheism).

The Humility of the Sahaba: The fact that the Companions were worried shows their high level of self-accountability. They didn't consider themselves "perfect" believers; they were always concerned about the quality of their faith.

The Great Injustice: By quoting Surah Luqman ("No doubt, joining others in worship with Allah is a great injustice"), the Prophet (ﷺ) established that the most important part of Iman is keeping worship pure for Allah alone.

Why it's in the "Book of Belief": Imam al-Bukhari uses this to prove that Iman can coexist with minor sins, but it cannot coexist with Shirk. As long as a believer avoids Shirk, they fall under the promise of security mentioned in the verse.
