The Prophet’s (ﷺ) dream about the "shirts" of religion.
Description:
Did you know that in Prophetic visions, our faith is often symbolized by the clothes we wear? In Sahih al-Bukhari 23, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) describes a dream where he saw different people wearing shirts of various lengths. Some shirts only reached the chest, while others were even shorter.
However, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (RA) appeared wearing a shirt so long that it trailed behind him as he walked. When the companions asked for the meaning of this vision, the Prophet (ﷺ) gave a one-word answer: "Religion."
Key Lessons & Insights:
Faith is a Covering: Just as a shirt protects the body and hides its nakedness, Deen (Religion) protects the soul and covers its faults. The more complete a person's faith, the better "covered" and protected they are spiritually.
The Rank of 'Umar (RA): This Hadith is a direct testimony to the immense spiritual strength and adherence to Islam of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab. His "long shirt" symbolized his deep knowledge, his strict justice, and his unwavering commitment to the commands of Allah.
Levels of Belief: The varying lengths of the shirts in the dream prove that Iman increases and decreases. Not everyone’s practice of the religion is at the same level; some have a "short" garment of faith, while others have one that is full and complete.
Why it's in the "Book of Belief": Imam al-Bukhari uses this to show that "Religion" and "Faith" are used interchangeably. To have a "long shirt" in a dream is a metaphor for having a high level of Iman.
