01:45But first, with the clocks going forward this weekend,
01:47we're starting tonight by talking about the importance of sleep,
01:50because whilst the change brings lighter evenings,
01:52which we love, it also does mean one hour less in bed.
01:56Definitely not my favourite.
01:57It's something that you'll all know about
01:59if you're one of the millions of people
02:01who now track their sleep.
02:03But does all that data do us more harm than good?
02:05Well, Richie Anderson has been to find out.
02:09As a nation, we're obsessed with our sleep.
02:13And many of us want to keep up to date
02:15on exactly how much we're getting.
02:18There's now an abundance of monitors
02:19telling us how long and how deeply we sleep.
02:23Trackers, like these,
02:26can give us an insight into our sleep patterns.
02:28But what I really want to know is whether
02:31recording all this information
02:33is actually any good for us.
02:35Ten years ago, mum of four Becky
02:38was struggling so badly with insomnia
02:40that her family intervened.
02:43I had what's called a white night
02:45when you don't sleep at all.
02:46Then I didn't sleep the next night.
02:48And that was the beginning of a horrendous five years.
02:51And my son said,
02:54mum, I really think you need to get some help.
02:57So I just googled sleep therapist.
02:59How did you get better, Becky?
03:00She explained to me that it's all about reducing your sleep window.
03:04Couldn't go to bed before half eleven
03:05and I had to get up at ten past six.
03:08But alongside that,
03:09you never stay in bed after half an hour
03:12when you haven't slept.
03:13For some people,
03:15sleep trackers can be useful.
03:17But Becky received some surprise advice
03:19from her therapist.
03:20Well, she was very much of the opinion
03:24that they don't help
03:25because she's trying to stop you obsessing about sleep.
03:28Yeah.
03:29An estimated one in every ten to twenty of us
03:32struggle with insomnia.
03:35Lindsay Browning has spent the last 20 years
03:37helping insomniacs like Becky.
03:39I want her take on monitoring sleep.
03:42There are so many trackers.
03:43Could that help with insomnia?
03:45For some people,
03:46they can be really, really helpful.
03:47You might notice a pattern.
03:49If it's helpful for you
03:50to give you some extra data,
03:51fantastic.
03:52If you're finding it
03:53just causing you more stress,
03:54then just, you know,
03:55leave them on the side.
03:56When somebody starts to worry
03:57about their sleep,
03:59you're so anxious about not sleeping
04:00that then you can't sleep.
04:03Monitoring yourself at home is one thing,
04:05but there's a whole academic field
04:07of researching what goes on
04:09in our brains at night.
04:11And I'm going to be a guinea pig.
04:13So tonight,
04:14I'm not heading to my comfy bed
04:16or even a hotel room.
04:19I'm at the University of Surrey
04:21in its state-of-the-art sleep lab
04:23where scientists
04:24are going to be monitoring me overnight.
04:28The six-bedroom facility
04:30is a state-of-the-art lab
04:31that uses polysonography,
04:33a sophisticated way
04:35of monitoring our brains.
04:36Marta Pineda is one of the researchers.
04:39Well, then,
04:40so can I go and get in bed then now?
04:41Not yet, no.
04:42I need to get you all wired up.
04:44The lab allows scientists
04:45to control every variable
04:47while electrodes placed on the head
04:49record brainwaves.
04:51You know what?
04:51I'm tired, but
04:52how am I going to get to sleep
04:54with all this, huh?
04:55We'll find out.

05:12to analyze my data from the lab.
05:15The data show
05:16you have all the brainwaves
05:18we would expect to see
05:19in a good, healthy, young sleeper.
05:22Good to know
05:23I'm a good sleeper,
05:24but I'd like to know
05:25what else the research can show.
05:27What have you found
05:28doing all this study?
05:30Sleep problems
05:31are often a predictor
05:33of mental health problems.
05:36In people with depression,
05:37there will be more ramp sleep,
05:40actually,
05:40more of that rapid eye movement.
05:42With dementia,
05:43sleep is also altered.
05:45There may be less
05:46rapid eye movement sleep.
05:48Sleep tells us something
05:49about brain health.
05:51But research from the lab
05:53has also revealed
05:53insights for everybody.
05:55It turns out
05:56that when you see
05:58quite a bit of daylight
05:59during the day,
06:00you will sleep better
06:02at night.
06:03OK.
06:04For all of us.
06:05That's true for people
06:06living with dementia,
06:07it's true for older people,
06:09it's true for younger people.
06:12Research like this
06:13could offer all of us
06:14some new insights
06:15into getting
06:15some much-needed shut eye.
06:17And as we're doing
06:18your own tracking,
06:19it's interesting,
06:21you've got to handle with care.

08:24your feelings forever.

08:32I'll start with you, Noah.
08:33This series is incredible.
08:34So you play Dr. Robbie.
08:35I do.
08:36Can you tell us
08:36a little bit more about him
08:38and where we find him
08:39during this emergency shift
08:40in the department?
08:41He is like a lot
08:43of practitioners,
08:43somebody who's been
08:44working nonstop
08:45through COVID
08:46and never really took
08:47a break to analyze
08:48what a harrowing experience
08:49that was for him.
08:50So he's a bit of
08:51an undiagnosed PTSD survivor
08:53who doesn't know
08:54quite how high
08:56the water levels
08:57are rising over him
08:58until this shift
08:58really triggers him.
09:00Yeah.
09:00Now, Catherine,
09:01you play charge nurse Dana.
09:03She's a bit of a matriarch
09:04in the team.
09:05And you've described her
09:06as being a bit
09:07like a basketball coach.
09:08Yeah, you know,
09:09the first episodes
09:10there were two different
09:11traumas going on
09:12and there's glass doors
09:13on them
09:14and I was kind of
09:15going back and forth
09:16to see like
09:17did everyone have
09:18what they needed
09:18and I had this like
09:19stress ball
09:20as one of the props
09:21and I was like
09:21I feel like a basketball coach.
09:23It was like
09:23I was at Phil Hendry.
09:25Yeah.
09:25I just felt like
09:26I suddenly was like
09:26I realized I had
09:27the body language
09:28of a basketball coach
09:29and it's kind of
09:29what she is.
09:30She's like making sure
09:31does everyone have
09:32what they need
09:33so they can play
09:34their part right.
09:34She makes you feel safe.
09:36That's what I love about it.
09:36She's like tough love
09:38personified
09:38in a great way.
09:40Now Noah
09:40lots of viewers
09:41will have got to know you
09:42as Dr. Carter
09:44from ER
09:44and it was actually
09:45fans of that series
09:46that essentially
09:47brought you back
09:47into the medical world,
09:49right?
09:49Very true.
09:50Fans and people
09:51that were inspired
09:51to go into that line
09:52of work
09:53from watching that show
09:54reaching out to me
09:55during the pandemic
09:56and telling me
09:56how difficult it was
09:58for them
09:58was the catalyst
09:59for me reaching out
10:00to John Wells
10:01the executive producer
10:02and to Scott Gemmell
10:03and we all sort of
10:05independently had
10:05the same idea
10:06that there was
10:07another story to tell
10:08post-COVID
10:10about what was happening
10:11in American healthcare
10:11and we were all excited
10:13to work with each other
10:13again and tell a new story
10:15in an old way.
10:16Yeah.
10:17Brilliant.
10:17Now Catherine,
10:18now this show
10:19is not for the faint-hearted.
10:20My wife definitely
10:21was not prepared
10:22for some of those
10:22early surgery scenes
10:24but you all had to go
10:25to a medical boot camp
10:26to prepare, right?
10:27Yes, yes.
10:27What did that all involve?
10:29Well, some of us
10:30tried to learn
10:31to sew things.
10:34Very good.
10:34I'm not playing a doctor.
10:35I'm not good at sewing
10:36but I can trach.
10:37So we learned to like
10:38do basic medical techniques.
10:40I learned along with them
10:41even though I don't do
10:42any of them in the show
10:42thank God.
10:43In fact,
10:44when we get to a scene
10:45later in the first season
10:47when they do need my help
10:49they were speaking to me
10:50like oh,
10:50then you hang a bag
10:51and I'm like hold on
10:52what's hang a bag?
10:53It literally means like
10:54take some glucose
10:55and like stick it up
10:56there on a hook.
10:57Like the most basic thing.
10:59I'm like I didn't know
10:59how to do any of it.
11:00And I was like
11:01you've got to back me up.
11:02Oh man,
11:02I love the fact
11:03that they actually
11:03learn stuff.
11:04Well this is it.
11:05A true actor's experience
11:06you know,
11:07going method essentially.
11:09Now as we mentioned
11:09it is a very intense watch
11:11but it has been praised
11:12greatly by the medical community.
11:14How does it make you feel
11:15I guess,
11:16you know,
11:16getting that support
11:17from them
11:18and like you know
11:18just the lengths
11:19you guys have gone
11:20to make it.
11:20It's everything.
11:21That was the population
11:22we were trying to win over
11:24and honour initially
11:24and even more rewarding
11:27than their reaction
11:29family's reaction
11:30people who are related
11:31to people who do
11:31this kind of work
11:32who now have context
11:33in a way that they
11:34maybe not had before.
11:36Yeah, yeah.
11:37And when it came
11:37to making it like
11:38that realistic
11:39you know,
11:40what were you practising on?
11:41We're really intrigued
11:42by just the song
11:43and dance of it all.
11:44Well we have a very
11:46a full team
11:47of technical advisors.
11:48We've got board certified
11:49ER doctors
11:50on our writing staff
11:51and on the set
11:52every episode
11:52trauma nurses
11:53all over the set
11:54who are there
11:55to show us
11:55how to hold the things
11:56how to say the things
11:58and more importantly
11:59how to feel emotionally
12:00you know,
12:01based on your level
12:02of education
12:03and experience
12:04so that everybody's
12:05not singing the same note
12:06everybody's character
12:07is plotted on
12:08their course
12:10where they should be.
12:11Brilliant.
12:12Love that.
12:13Now Dylan,
12:13we need to speak to you
12:14about your experience
12:15in medical dramas
12:16so Catherine,
12:18Noah,
12:18there's a big old
12:19medical drama
12:20in the UK
12:20that we love
12:20called Holby City.

12:24played a patient.
12:25That's it.
12:26It's not on the same
12:27level as you.
12:29Yeah,
12:30I didn't have to
12:31learn anything.
12:31Were you in a coma?
12:34She's in a coma
12:36right now.

12:39which is nice

12:42that was like
12:4213 years ago
12:44I've still been
12:45playing a teenager
12:47but yeah,

12:48it was an amazing
12:49experience
12:50and yeah,
12:51you really learn

12:52in those jobs
12:53you know,
12:54it's really,
12:55really fascinating.

12:58incredibly experienced

12:59you're very familiar
12:59with the medical jargon
13:01but in the early
13:02ER days
13:03there was
13:03a real life emergency
13:05that didn't quite
13:05go to plan,
13:06did it?
13:07I think I know
13:09what you're referring to
13:09and it was when
13:10George Clooney,
13:12Eric LaSalle,
13:12Anthony Edwards
13:13and I all
13:14went across the street
13:15from the studio
13:16to have lunch
13:16and we had
13:17Anthony Edwards'
13:18infant son
13:19Bailey with us
13:20who started to
13:21choke on a french fry.
13:22We're all wearing
13:23our doctor costumes
13:23with our stethoscopes
13:24and we noticed
13:25that the kid is choking
13:26and we all
13:27kind of panic
13:28and don't know
13:28quite what to do
13:29and it was the busboy
13:31walking by
13:31who was very level-headed
13:33and very cool
13:34and put his finger
13:34in the kid's mouth
13:35and fished the french fry out
13:36and the rest of us
13:39looked around the room
13:40and thought
13:41we should probably
13:41pay the check.
13:43That's super scary.

14:19is so inspirational.
14:25Kerry deserves
14:26this one big thank you
14:28because she really is
14:29one in a million.
14:31While working
14:32as a college drama teacher
14:34Kerry Nell saw
14:35that many adults
14:36with additional needs
14:37were denied access
14:38to the arts
14:38so she left her
14:40full-time job
14:40and founded
14:41the Proud Performing Arts Company.
14:43She's the most
14:44lovely
14:46kindest
14:47person.
14:48It really brought
14:49out my confidence
14:50and pushed me
14:50out of my comfort zone.
14:52Eight years later
14:53it's grown to
14:54more than 80 members
14:55all adults
14:56with learning disabilities
14:57and autism.
14:58They stage musicals
15:00plays
15:00and an annual
15:01Christmas pantomime.
15:02For many members
15:03it's the only place
15:04they get to perform.
15:05It really has helped
15:06me grow my confidence
15:07and I feel like
15:08a different
15:09but a really
15:10grown version
15:11of myself
15:12and Kerry really
15:13helps you feel
15:14very supportive.
15:15The group also
15:16provides a vital
15:17place for people
15:18to get together
15:18and make friends.
15:20It's like a second
15:21home
15:21all like family
15:23it's one big
15:23happy community.
15:26She's
15:26very inclusive
15:28it doesn't matter
15:29what
15:30disability
15:31you've got.
15:32The group
15:33is funded
15:33by grants
15:34members fees
15:35ticket sales
15:36and support
15:36from friends
15:37and family
15:38all rallied
15:39by Kerry.
