01:15is the experience the people he's fabulous the feeling
01:42it's a colourful autumn at Grantley Hall and with hotels 47 rooms nearly at capacity it promises to be a
01:49busy week for general manager Nunu and his 500 staff and hotel is where dreams are made staying
01:57in one of our gorgeous superior space hotel is where experience are shared and tell is that memories are
02:07created so every action is always thinking how can we surpass guest expectations that they come to us
02:14and they say is much better than any hotel in the world my job is to pass that to the
02:18team you could
02:19you just get the guys to check the cars the six cars they're not straight at all thanks man
02:27that one there just that one there thank you very much
02:33I was always going to be an otelier always I couldn't do anything else and it's not a job
02:37it's you know it's my DNA and I could actually work all the time you know I'm sure that the
02:44team
02:44have spotted and they are doing something about it but I will chase it because we can't have that
02:50I'm quite good with detail that things need to look perfect looks worse on the camera wow
02:56how am I going to sleep with this tonight I'm not sure I think I want to see things as

03:03them and if he's not straight it looks messy it looks disorganized I think potentially I might be
03:10on a spectrum of something I wouldn't say what but I might be one word for Nuno incredible top

03:47Nuno's last job of the morning is a check of one of the hotel's most sought-after bedrooms
03:54the Royal Suites that I'm going to check the manager manager look at that built in the halls former
04:08chapel the Royal Suite offers views of the formal gardens and features a show-stopping mezzanine level
04:21bedroom it's very frequent that people enter to this room and they cry when they get in because
04:29they can't believe how beautiful it is this could be a room for a king or a queen we love

04:39it yeah and here we have a picture of Valeria our founder and reminds me a bit even if she's
04:46not
04:46around she's around she's watching us love that picture Valeria's son Richard has been at the helm
05:05of the business since the Sykes family bought Granley Hall in 2015 and this week he greenlit a huge revamp
05:14of one of the food and drink venues the orchard bar and restaurant so we've got the orchard 24 7
05:21place
05:22it's meant to be more of a cafe style place but more relaxed we changed the concept of it a
05:27couple
05:27of times a year to really give our guests a different experience it's originally post-covid outside dining
05:35when you couldn't dine inside but it's become a really big part of what guests want here the orchards
05:40transformations are designed to change with the seasons and a masterminded by the hotel's interior
05:46and ambience manager Marek patrick action but the bottom line is it has to be better it has to be
05:55different it has to photograph well and it has to be part of the grantly DNA which is you know
06:00the very
06:00high to luxury as you can see summer is over pink white is disappearing and we're gonna bring more warm
06:09colors gold black and red this sophisticated colors just came to me like check me check me check me work
06:16with me and yeah so I'm very excited actually about this project this year Marek has just three days to
06:25bring his vision to life before a lavish champagne launch on Friday evening no pressure no pressure
06:34yeah it's just here but outside is like this but his ambitious plans mean adding a new entrance updated
06:46lighting we're gonna have a six yeah three different designs in the middle yeah and pots galore of
06:53metallic paint it has to be the same goal as we have across the hotel so we manage after like

07:00four yeah five samples and that's just for starters Marek is my butterfly I love Marek when I came here
07:09he was the right man for the job which is in charge of style how it feels the smells the
07:17looks and and
07:18that's what he's great at so the panel is we're gonna cover with the antique middle kind of tiles but
07:24there's a few rules with Marek I don't orchard close for any time by closing an outlet it jeopardizes
07:31the service and jeopardizes the revenue and the reputation if I had my own way would have been
07:35they so I've been quite nice to him to give him three days actually today Grantley Hall is one of
07:55Yorkshire's most opulent hotels but back in 2015 the grade two listed country house was going to rack and
08:03ruin when Barnsley born entrepreneur Valeria Sykes spotted it on the market I'm sure God were working
08:10through me that perfect day and I just turned and I said I'm going to my grand field tomorrow I'm
08:17doing
08:17it for Yorkshire and I've got to do it I said it's going to be a tarped hotel I want
08:22to show the south
08:22what we can do in the north
08:27the first person Valeria called upon to help realize her vision was son Richard I remember
08:34really well when mom called me I knew the place it's a magical place really really is and I said
08:41well it must be crazy but I'll support you in what you want to do to embark on something like
08:47that is a
08:47massive challenge but if this is what you really want we'll make it happen
09:06good to see you okay have you been okay yes it's fine and what's the plan for the day what
09:16are you doing I've got three meetings down in Norton and then in Lifestyle so I'm going to leave you

09:25his eyes attention to detail is just unbelievable if I'm good at attention to detail easy to different
09:31level but you can't be running this place at the level we are without being demanding in everything
09:37Valeria very different she's the mother figure she's incredible lady which is the backbone of what we do
09:43she's the one that makes sure that we have the family values I came from near Bounsley I brought
09:51up in a council house my dad was a minor I've had a fantastic life but I've had a lot
09:58of sadness as
09:58well I got divorced so that's why I could put all the money into this I left school at 16
10:05went to work
10:05for my dad's motor vehicle companies scrapyards typical tight Yorkshire man I'd certainly not got any
10:11idea of this sort of level of opulence or luxury Richard enlisted the support of his three children
10:19and together the Sykes family embarked on the challenge of a lifetime once we started looking
10:25around the grounds it was really sad to see how it would have been allowed to fall into so much
10:31disrepair oh it was terrible you know suspended ceilings that were just letting water in so the
10:37magnitude even of the main hall was significant but yeah proper challenge and that proper challenge
10:47didn't half grow legs the renovations took four years employing an army of local Yorkshire contractors
10:57and at a cost of more than a hundred million pounds much of which was spent on adding a whole
11:04new wing we
11:06need accommodation we needed a spa we needed a plant room and the challenge was to create something
11:10with a bit of almost Romanesque feel to feel a little bit more European we did that on purpose to
11:17have something different to the hall so it's got tradition but the DNA is quite different the fabric
11:23is fresher and newer we wanted to create something that felt unique more like a touch of Yorkshire it's
11:32like a posh guest house lady Johnson how are you where else can you get greeted at the door saying
11:39hey
11:39up love how are you welcome to granted all let's get you all checked in let's get your bags up
11:43to
11:44the room and get you all nice and relaxed all right Glenn we're gonna give you that Yorkshire welcome why
11:49would we not you smell nice wonder what you've got why is it they use words that are very Yorkshire

11:54and I love it you know if you have somebody welcomed by a member of staff and they go I
11:58hope I hope

12:13superstar we have a super VIP coming coming from the States she'll be staying with us for a week so

12:47at the heart of Grantley Hall's mission to be a world-leading hotel is the bespoke level of
12:52service it offers to everyone who stays with them with that in mind they've created a special task force
12:58called the guest experience team good evening how are you very well thank you how are you you'll
13:06have a toast which department head Thierry guides with joie de vivre fabulous thank you so basically
13:21the role of guest experience is to oversee our guest journey from pre-checking to check out she had a
13:27good weekend it was just brilliant see you next time we do research about our guests we log what
13:37they like what they don't like they will remember the emotion and the little detail more than the
13:42bottle of champagne you put in the bedrooms they still find plenty of tennis no I can't run I'm really
13:47in pain his legs so I need to get fitter so I started drawing instead for me it's all about

13:55heart of hospitality the big influence my life was my dad because he was managing casinos and then he
14:02switched to bar sues it was just amazing if I could be ten percent of as good as he was

14:08it was incredible the hotel has ten staff assigned to each room and with guests typically paying between
14:19one thousand and four and a half thousand pounds a night no request is too big or too small good
14:27afternoon guest experience we'll check about three or four rooms a day add any amenities the flowers
14:34champagne cakes etc and just make sure everything's all good for our guests we have been known to go out
14:42in our Bentley to collect prawn cocktail crisps for our guests we have a pillow menu and all our bed
14:48linen is made with the finest Egyptian cotton that one just needs you need to move that ribbon and then
14:54the one behind it just needs to go at the other side perfect with a hotel nearing capacity the
15:03pressure's going platinum for Thierry's team with a booking from a globally renowned singer we have a super
15:10VIP coming coming from the States so I'm just reading what the main requirements are the riders
15:15she'll be staying with us for a week so watch the space the PA looking after Thierry's high-profile
15:29guest has been in touch to say their car is only a couple of hours away we're not going to
15:36do the

16:08gold leaf so we only use the finest ingredients the best in the world everything that we use down to
16:15cream sugar chocolate is world class it's edible gold it doesn't taste of anything but it just gives
16:23that a little bit of grantly gold and finally a personal touch for a truly independent woman we have
16:31a white chocolate care hopefully the VIP guests will love it back in the orchard bistro work is continuing
16:45on the three-day transformation who owns this ladder this is to go to retirement house please oh that's
16:54my oh sorry baby but I really don't like this ladder it's like 1999 but the forecast for style guru
17:02Marek schedule is looking bleak the weather is not helping because we are working on the floor outside now
17:09so the water is going to be slightly wet yeah helping keep things on track is Marek's trusted assistant
17:17so this is Shelly Leslie gift shop manager and my amazing helper having Shelly in house is unbelievable
17:25help and she's always willing to change her shifts she's working very close and the connection from day
17:31one is like we are Pisces basically we are both Pisces we get each other we get each other Marek's
17:38she's basically like a labrador puppy surely he will always go the extra mile for his role he is extra
17:45in every way but he's very very kind-hearted and he will try his best to to do what he
17:51can to help
17:51anybody I grow up from the very young person when my mom was always telling me you have to do
17:58what is
17:59here and just keep up with positivity and amazing beautiful approach you need to be perfect if it's not
18:07perfect I'm gonna leave it I'm gonna leave it until it's gonna be done properly just a little
18:13bit stop exactly it is perfect next job for mr. perfection an eye-catching selfie station I do

19:51hotel manager Nunu wants to see the water damage for himself so we're going to put a new board yeah
19:57with just over two days to go into launch night nearly every section of the marquee is in transition
20:06it looks like a bomb site for me it's all about the wow it's all about the first impression the

20:13that we don't have wows it's not gonna happen because then we're going downhill we have to keep
20:18going up here with everything we do the hotel staff have been briefed and are ready for the
20:29arrival of the famous pop star one celebrity are staying they'll be using pseudonym so the staff will
20:36will have to use the pseudonym not not not the real name of course the hotel's code name is miss

20:42though the cake bears her real first initial hello hi how are you is it ready for me it's
20:48absolutely ready fabulous thank you what we got here and so we've got that you've got sponge
20:52multiple ganache and then we have the gold leaf yes how special this is fabulous isn't it

29:35fountains abbey you go over the seven bridges and drop yourself right into ripon yeah I've got a little

29:47the oldest
29:47sweet shop in the world they go to ripon to see the cathedral and that does make a special but

29:55well as being a devoted doorman so what we're doing which take you short 20 minute half an hour tour
30:01Kev has a side hustle at the hotel that he loves nearly as much start the very beginning in 1680
30:08and we'll end up in 1910
30:11I like history anywhere I'm interested in all the historical things so the suggestion was put a sign on reception
30:18and say at four o'clock
30:20your dormant cabin will take you around on the history tour so you're now stood in the oldest part of
30:26the building this was completed in 1680 by Thomas Norton I can give you a half hour walk around I
30:32can sit down for three hours if you really want me to
30:35I could talk for England this was the original library quite a few of the books around the shelves are
30:42original books okay so if you were to choose a year we're going what we've got there 1971
30:53each book when we open that shows you on our little car is a cocktail from that era if we

31:02we go to the bar staff and they make you one so a pisco sour yeah he's wonderful isn't he
31:11he's incredible he's a walking history book he really knows his stuff
31:18it's the second day of the orchard bar and restaurants big makeover it's getting there for
31:24you fantastic the board is done on the flooring so we have a gap already filled decorators literally
31:32they have a like probably another two hours to finish both are going on the olive trees it's all going
31:37together I think the colors incredible with the tiles below the bar and the tiles on the planters
31:44so win win win as they say teamwork makes the dream work you can clear all this and then it's
31:54ready for the guys to come in tonight okay sometimes I can be his mom sometimes I can be his
32:02carer the
32:03dynamic between us changes on a daily basis but we're ultimately friends thank you so much for everything
32:10that's okay his mind does work at a million miles an hour sometimes he will verbalize at million miles
32:17an hour I think he's got easier to rein in the more we've got to know each other so it's

33:35overhaul I was here seven o'clock and I set up three alarms today instead of two like always free

33:43sure I am on time and I'll be late with just nine hours to go before an elite list of

33:50for the launch party there's still plenty of jobs left to juggle we're still in the blankets cushions
34:03almost done and the covers we're doing the holy trees now position of the floor standing lamps inside
34:12is a hive of activity but outside the storm is brewing we always checking the weather very
34:20carefully because obviously the structure of the venue is fragile and we need to make sure you know
34:26it's safe the way it's not gonna help with a glamorous look of the guests arriving today but
34:31hi-ho we're gonna deal with adding 15 evergreens to the four huge olive trees is boosting the woodland feel
34:42not very happy with the section how is going you measured no sorry he ordered for my measurement they
34:50just need to go in gold pots to tie in with the overall theme that side down push down that

34:58nobody but that's not how the physics works okay exactly walk out from this you can do it everything is
35:06possible it just needs a little bit of maneuver but unfortunately it's a little bit tight and we're done
35:16see everything is possible we will need some gold paints and I will need a manicure it's too low

35:34Marek has arranged a surprise finishing touch
35:41in orchard this year we have a red fiat tim sykes said what's about a car yes let's have a

36:03color is beautiful amazing exactly as we picture and look stunning I'm pleased and happy like wow wow
36:25manoeuvring an Italian car worth 40 grand into a tight corner isn't a job to be rushed
36:34super yep that's great effect because you know you're opening door car is in the front of you then wow

36:46then wow yeah we have a cherry on the top of the cake the orchard is glowing with a cozy
36:56and vibrant charm
36:59but the scene outside is far from inviting and Marek's outlook has just become a lot gloomier too

38:17Shelley and the rest of the team can finally complete their mammoth journey happy yes ready
38:23for a bottle of wine and about when the guests arrive for the launch party this evening they'll
38:37be treading in some very illustrious footsteps since it was built in the late 17th century
38:42Grantley Hall has been home to lords and ladies and played host to royalty doorman and history buff Kevin
38:49is guardian of the halls archives we're very fortunate that when Grantley Hall first opened
38:59as a hotel there were several people in the area said oh I've got some historical bits you might like
39:05and as more information comes in this gets thicker and thicker and thicker I think the appeal of the
39:15mysteries the little bits of we've got a snippet of that is I want to know that that is correct
39:21and how can I find that out it's a challenge get the old gray cells work Grantley Hall first built
39:28in
39:281680 was in the same family for 200 years one of the sort of flamboyant characters of that time was
39:36certainly the first Lord Grantley which was Fletcher Norton very much in the judiciary system and became
39:42speaker of the house by the early 20th century the Norton family had sold the hall to the wealthy
39:48industrialist Sir Christopher furnace and his wife Lady Jane a lot of the decor now is very much down to
39:58the 1910s 1920s they had lavish parties they had friends there they showed off the Japanese garden was
40:06added by Lady Jane furnace in 1910 one of the first in the country and she loved to show that
40:14off and there
40:16she is proudly sat on the bridge after the wall the hall became an adult education centre before the
40:24Sykes family added a new chapter to its illustrious history looking through these photographs it just
40:32in folks all the different things that Grantley Hall has been how it's evolved how it's grown and
40:38obviously mrs. Sykes bought this place changed it put the vibe back into it put the beauty back into it
