Rob and Jeremy react to Trevor Rogers' strong showing in an Opening Day win for the Orioles Thursday and what his first outing portends for the 2026 season.
Transcript
00:00And he's right about his guy. Rodgers was on one yesterday, Jeremy Kahn going pitch for pitch with his counterpart.
00:08At what point, we keep saying, we keep waiting for reality to kick in. My question to you is this,
00:15define what reality is for this guy. What is reality? Because the more he goes out there, the more he
00:21shows you that he is that dude.
00:24Again, it's been the most overused thing when it comes to Trevor Rodgers is saying, I don't think he can
00:30repeat last year. Okay, again, if he's half as good as he was last year, he's better than most of
00:36the pitchers in the American League. And yesterday was one of those moments. I actually like games like that, where
00:41you see he does not have his best stuff. He's walking more guys than usual, gave up a couple hits,
00:46maybe some some plays that could have been made that weren't whatever. But he putting guys on base and getting
00:52out of jams.
00:52And I think this is what those elite pitchers do when they don't have their best stuff. They still give
00:57you a chance to win. And your chance to win was him not giving up runs in a game that
01:03he doesn't have his best stuff. So I think it was a great start.
01:06And his last 10 starts, Jeremy, his last 10 starts, you know how many earned runs he's given up?
01:1310 starts, I would guess he's given up eight. Now, that would be good. But he had that six run
01:20outing.
01:21Okay, so you have that one in there. Okay, so he's given up 14, six of them in one outing,
01:28his last outing of the year against the Yankees.
01:30Here's his line, all right? What was that? August 1st against the Chicago Cubs, eight innings, one run.
01:38August 6th against the Philadelphia Phillies, six innings, one run. These are good teams, Jeremy.
01:45Yeah. August 13th against the Seattle Mariners, good team, right? Seven innings, one run.
01:51August 18th against the Boston Red Sox, seven innings, one run.
01:56August 24th against the Houston Astros, seven innings, one run.
02:03August 30th against the San Francisco Giants, seven innings, one run.
02:09September 6th against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Oh, yeah, the horrible outing.
02:13Five in the third innings, two runs. Oh, they got to him.
02:17September 12th at Toronto, five innings, no runs.
02:23September 19th, New York Yankees, six innings, no runs.
02:29Then he has the hiccup at the end of the season. Who knows?
02:32Maybe he's just looking forward to the finish line at that point when he goes three innings, giving up six
02:36runs.
02:36All right. Maybe that's the end of the run.
02:40So he comes back yesterday. He goes seven innings, no runs.
02:45So Jeremy Kahn, in his last one, two, three, four outings, he's only given up a run in one of
02:57those.
02:58In his last four outings.
03:00So, again, maybe he can't be the guy last year, but can anybody say maybe if we said, this is
03:08how we think.
03:09If I said to you, oh, he's not going to be as good as he was last year.
03:12Everybody in the room would believe me, right?
03:15But if I said, oh, he's just as good as he was last year.
03:19No one in the room would believe me because it's easier to believe that he can't do it again.
03:23Yeah. I mean, look, an ERA in the ones, usually if a reliever has that, you're like, oh, my God,
03:29what an amazing year.
03:31And what is he going to pitch?
03:3280, 100?
03:34I mean, maybe.
03:35Like, who knows how many innings that guy's going to get in throughout the course of the season.
03:39But that being said, there's no reason that this guy can't be, I don't want to say repeat what he
03:45did, but be very good in the moments and still not have a one-run ERA.
03:51What if his ERA is three?
03:53That's amazing.
03:54You know what I loved about yesterday?
03:56And the strikeouts were up, too.
03:57That he wasn't dominant.
04:00I love the fact that he wasn't dominant yesterday.
04:02Yesterday he had some hiccups.
04:05He showed some flaws yesterday and he came out of it with no runs.
04:08Now, he had some help by his defense, but do you want to be Trevor Rodgers yesterday or do you
04:12want to be Paul Skeens?
04:13Yeah.
04:14A guy who had it, but the defense didn't.
04:17And most people are going to look at that game and go, look, Skeens wasn't great in the first inning.
04:21No, he didn't, but he didn't deserve that.
04:22But he didn't deserve that.
04:23Yeah.
04:24Not at all.
04:24He didn't get out of the first inning.
04:27I just love to see Rodgers pitch.
04:29You're going to see Braddish tomorrow.
04:31I mean, you have, if Boz does what we think he's going to do,
04:37we haven't even talked about Bassett yet.
04:38I just, I love the, I didn't think about what this pitching staff could be
04:42until after we talked about it on air yesterday.
04:45I thought, man, Rodgers is Rodgers.
04:47We know who he is.
04:48I know what Braddish is.
04:49Folks around here don't act like they don't.
04:51I know who Kyle Braddish is.
04:52Kyle Braddish is absolutely nasty.
04:54He's illegal.
04:55I think Boz can be a dude.
04:58And we know what Bassett can do.
04:59And we haven't even talked about Eflin.
05:02Oh, by the way, we got the most reliable pitcher in the rotation the last two years
05:08down in the minors.
05:09Yep.
05:09Well, again, this may sound silly to some, but when it comes to starting pitching
05:14or hitting, I'm more worried about the hitting than the starting pitching.
05:16I think it's, that's going to play in every single game with those guys.
05:20I'm not saying you won't have bad starts.
05:21Everybody does, but the point is, like, every time you go out there, you're going
05:25to have a chance to be in the game.
05:27The hitting lineup, to me, still has to prove that they can hit against left-handed
05:30pitching, even with the additions you made, because last year was just dreadful.
05:34And I think that changes.
05:36I think they get much better because they did down the stretch, but you can't come
05:39out against Logan Allen and let him shut you down for seven innings, a soft-tossing
05:44lefty.
05:45I thought, what do you think of Tyler Wells yesterday?
05:49I mean, outside of what we talked about with Tito.
05:51I thought he was fine.
05:52Like, again, I think he's going to be a good bullpen piece.
05:54He should have been in school this inning.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Yep.
05:57I think he's going to be outstanding in that role.
05:59Seventh, eighth inning, I think he'll be absolutely outstanding.
06:01The one thing I have questions about a lot is the bullpen.
06:04I just don't know what it's going to look like.
06:06And again, it doesn't mean they're not going to be good just because these aren't
06:09household names, but I think if you were going to poke a hole in the Orioles, you'd
06:12say, if this ship sinks, it's probably because of that.
06:15And Helsley, phew, buddy.
06:17I mean, he put the exclamation point on yesterday.
