00:00You can hear him on the Orioles telecast. Heard him yesterday. He is Kevin Brown.
00:07I can't get to it, Joe, on this side.
00:11Kevin, what's up, man?
00:12I do like more than two musical artists. I just want people to know that.
00:16Yeah, but, you know, I think when you come on the show, those are the two that always get played
00:20for you, though, right?
00:20I know, which is fine. I'm not going to complain.
00:24But, you know, my taste is wider than that. I'm just going to let the folks out there know.
00:29Can you give us a band or an artist that maybe people will be surprised that you really like?
00:36I saw Nine Inch Nails in concert two weeks ago. I love Nine Inch Nails.
00:41Love it.
00:41Yeah, that might be a surprise to some.
00:44I was surprised the day you said something, he has more hits than Kendrick Lamar.
00:52Who was that that weekend?
00:53Where were we that weekend?
00:54Yeah, I referenced the Kendrick Drake feud. Love Kendrick.
00:56Yeah, he said.
00:57One of the great halftime shows.
00:58He has more hits than Kendrick Lamar.
01:01Kevin, we're going to get to some college basketball, but yesterday you said it was very awkward seeing Samuel Basayo
01:07lead the ball game.
01:08What have you heard about that injury?
01:11Really just what Craig Albert had said after the game, which was he didn't think it was serious,
01:15and he did not believe there would be a need for further testing.
01:22I think when a player now, and this may be a fairly recent development, when a player now grabs at
01:30his chest or near his side, I think oblique.
01:33I think a lot of us now think oblique.
01:35There was such a rash of oblique injuries in baseball over the last several years, and then it feels like
01:42this spring training, the hammock bone is the new oblique.
01:44But we heard about it last year with Adley Rutschman dealing with two oblique issues.
01:50You know, Gunnar Henderson had the adductor issue that's very similar, and those issues can knock players out for a
01:56while.
01:56So that was my fear.
01:57But hopefully it is just some soreness from landing hard and nothing more, because as we said during the broadcast,
02:06Samuel Basayo should be a huge part of this team.
02:09So it was refreshing and relieving to know that Craig Albert has said he didn't think it'd be too serious.
02:15And I'm sure it'll be the first question he's asked at his media session today.
02:21Kevin, you'll be surprised or maybe happy.
02:23You know, one of my favorite songs is Hurt.
02:26Jeremy knows why.
02:27Oh, my gosh, beautiful song.
02:28And the Johnny Cash version of it.
02:30It's haunting, yes.
02:31A hundred percent.
02:32But the nine-inch nails was awesome, too.
02:34And I have a head like a hole.
02:39Anyway, what about, so far, I mean, obviously, I don't know how much stock we put into the spring training
02:43performances,
02:44but I do like what I see from some of the starting pitching.
02:47Trevor Rogers, is he exceeding expectations?
02:51I mean, you're right.
02:52It's hard to put too much stock in, but he certainly looks like last year, doesn't he?
02:56I mean, the velocity is really good already.
02:59He's already carrying his reload through two starts.
03:02The command looks just as sharp.
03:06Everybody expects Trevor Rogers has to take a step back because, you know, everybody in the history of baseball,
03:14just about since, you know, the mound was moved after 1968, has had to take a step back from that
03:23kind of season.
03:24But he looks just like himself.
03:25I mean, there are certain things he tweaked a little bit.
03:27He wants a little more velocity, and I think in his motion, you know, his deception, his arm angle,
03:34he doesn't need an overwhelming amount of velocity.
03:36But if he can pick up just a mile per hour, I think that would make a huge difference.
03:40He's tweaked his sweeper a little bit, which was such a great pitch last year.
03:44So he looks like he is exactly where he left off to me.
03:48It's pretty amazing to watch him and go, yeah, this is just the same guy.
03:52You want 30 starts.
03:54I mean, the only downside last year was he was hurt for the first couple of months of the year,
03:59and the Orioles only got half of that out of him.
04:02But if you get 30 starts out of Trevor Rogers, I think we're looking at another really special year.
04:07Kev, I want you to say with the Orioles, but you're quickly becoming one of my favorite basketball.
04:10Oh, no doubt.
04:11I mean, you do such a phenomenal job, and I'm not trying to kiss your ass because you're here.
04:15I'd have said it if you weren't.
04:16But this year, you don't have to give me the best team you've seen,
04:19but give me an intriguing team that you think may have a chance to maybe make some noise
04:23because you've seen quite a few games this season.
04:26Yeah, I mean, the first one will be the easy answer, which is Duke.
04:31But I also haven't seen Michigan in person.
04:34But an intriguing team, I'll give you one that's not far down the road.
04:37I think what Virginia has done this year is really special,
04:40and Virginia actually plays Duke tomorrow, which will be a great atmosphere in Cameron.
04:46And if Duke wins that, they clinch the ACC.
04:49If Virginia wins that, they would tie Duke for first in ACC, another tiebreaker with two games to go.
04:55Virginia, you know, folks kind of stopped paying attention after Tony Bennett stepped down before last year.
05:02Virginia has a completely new team with the exception of one player, Elijah Gertrude,
05:08who really is kind of a garbage time player or foul trouble emergency player at this point,
05:16which is not all that uncommon in college basketball, but is for Virginia,
05:20where for years and years they were the program of development.
05:23They'd get a player.
05:24They'd redshirt him as a freshman.
05:26He'd play a little bit as a redshirt freshman, maybe take a step up as a redshirt sophomore.
05:30Then by a junior, he was an all-ACC guy.
05:33That's not the case now.
05:34They have two players from overseas who are older players.
05:37They have a ton of transfers.
05:39They have this freshman, Chance Mallory, who's about 5'7", 5'8", from Charlottesville,
05:45like a local hero who's become this incredible spark plug off the bench.
05:49And I think they'll be somewhere in the 4-5 seed range,
05:53but they are good enough to win multiple games in the tournament.
05:58They are one of the best shot-blocking teams in the country,
06:01and they're one of the most balanced teams in the country.
06:04They are a great three-point shooting team.
06:06They have nine guys on the floor who can all make a three.
06:08That's pretty rare.
06:09And they have, like I said, one of the best shot-blocking defenses in the country.
06:13So on a night where they're making threes,
06:16they're one of the toughest teams to beat in the country.
06:19On a night where they're not, they can really stymie you defensively.
06:24And it's just so weird to see Virginia score in the eight.
06:26I mean, they would score in the 80s like twice a year under Tony Bennett.
06:30They've scored in the 80s, I think, close to 20 times this year.
06:33Odom's a great coach.
06:34Just a couple hours down the road.
06:36I mean, Ryan Odom, you're right.
06:37He was obviously, people know him from here at UMBC, literally just down the road.
06:42And then went to Utah State and won there, went to BCU and won there.
06:46And he's winning here.
06:48So Virginia is the team I think will make some noise here.
06:51I think they've been a little under the radar just because the top of college basketball is so buzzy.
06:57Michigan has been such a buzzy team.
07:00Duke, Arizona was unbeaten for such a long time.
07:04Caleb Wilson at Carolina, A.J. DeBotza, Derrick Peterson there.
07:09These freshmen are getting such headlines.
07:11And Virginia's just kind of rolling along at a much improved ACC.
07:16And they've only lost twice.
07:18And they just beat a really good NC State team by 29.
07:21So I like Virginia to kind of get on the national radar here again in the next few weeks.
07:25Kevin Brown.
07:26Kevin, when are you doing your next O's game, your next college basketball game?
07:30Next basketball game is tomorrow, Louisville-Clebson, which is a good one in the ACC.
07:35I think that's at 2 o'clock on ESPN 2.
07:38And then I come home tomorrow night and next O's game is on Sunday.
07:42They're playing somebody.
07:44It's a spring game.
07:44I don't know.
07:45I'll figure it out.
07:47I think that's against the Red Sox.
07:50And I think Chris Bassett is going to make his Oriole debut.
07:54Because Shane Boz is today.
07:55Kyle Braddish is tomorrow.
07:56And I believe Chris Bassett is going to start on Sunday.
07:59So that will be fun to watch.
08:00And a little Trey Gibson tonight, too.
08:02I think he comes in afterwards.
08:03Yeah, yeah.
08:04Getting your frequent flyer miles around, Kevin.
08:07I appreciate your time this morning.
08:08I'm trying.
08:09Thank you, guys.
08:10Always good to be on.
