03:49Данилс, takes advantage of the weak side.
03:52You saw C.J. McCollum staring at the basketball, loses sight of Thompson in the corner.
03:59Doesn't know that he's cutting right behind him along the baseline.
04:01He is not going to stand in the corner and settle for three-point shots.
04:05Pretty good catch radius on that dunk there, partner.
04:07Yeah, a lot of margin for error as a passer.
04:11Дуран, bludgeoning his way inside for the bucket.
04:16Дуран, on the board, headed towards potentially an all-NBA season.
04:21All-star this year as well.
04:23Good contest on Alexander Walker, who knocks it home.
04:27Man, has he relished the opportunity to expand his game offensively since he came to Atlanta.
04:32More of a role player and a defender in Minnesota.
04:34He has opened it up here.
04:36Jenkins lacing the three.
04:38Boy, what a story he is.
04:40Undrafted, coming out of St. John's.
04:43Again, his collegiate career at the University of Pacific with Coach Damon Stoudemire,
04:48former Raptors all-star.
04:50Johnson spins on Harris.
04:53He's seen two bodies a lot, Tim.
04:55Out to McCollum, who knocks down the three.
04:57Well, they know that Jalen Johnson likes to spin either direction.
05:01If he's got one defender on him, you're seeing early Detroit sending a second guy to be in his lap
05:06as he comes out of the spin, but he's got the poise to make plays regardless.
05:10On the roll, Turin inside with the lefty leg.
05:17Detroit back up four.
05:19Dyson Daniels with the low gather.
05:23McCollum over Robinson, cashes out.
05:27Boy, what a great acquisition McCollum was from Washington.
05:32He has really been a sage voice in the locker room.
05:38Harris trying to walk down Dyson Daniels.
05:41Fires over the top and knocks it home.
05:44Famous shot on the court right there.
05:45That's what he prefers to do.
05:47Either baseline.
05:48He wants to turn over the shoulder toward the baseline to go to that fadeaway jump shot.
05:53Jalen Johnson off glass, rebounded by Durin.
05:56Quickly up to Jenkins.
05:58Able to chase it down.
06:00Pulls the three.
06:02Durin tipped it up.
06:04No good.
06:04And it comes out to Alexander Walker.
06:06Here's McCollum.
06:09Alexander Walker with a quick three.
06:11This Hawks team shoots a ton of threes.
06:14They are top ten in both percentage and volume.
06:18And that guy right there, Nikhil Alexander Walker, the hottest of the group.
06:2150% from the three-point line over his last ten games.
06:25In which he's averaging about 24 a night.
06:28Durin again completing the two-man game.
06:32Doesn't seem like their pick-and-roll game has skipped a beat without Kate Cunningham.
06:36Making great reads.
06:37Great decision.
06:38Durin is such a great screener.
06:39And he dislodges people and creates space.
06:41You can run your pick-and-roll game regardless of who's handling the ball.
06:46Boy, Asar Thompson almost had two steals.
06:48Got one.
06:49Harris with some room service.
06:51And the Pistons lead by four.
06:54Thompson with the deflection.
06:55These Pistons number one in the league in deflections.
07:01Have to be strong with the basketball around them.
07:04McCollum around the screen knocks down another one.
07:11Different stylistically between these two teams.
07:14Atlanta's going to take a lot of threes.
07:15They're going to rely on that.
07:17They get dribble penetration, kick out, make you chase it.
07:20Detroit is more about what they get in the paint.
07:23Here's Robinson, wide open.
07:26Somebody hit the snooze button on him.
07:28Duncan Robinson with his first field goal.
07:30That's perfectly timed by Robinson.
07:32The dive by Durin occupied everybody to the edge of the lane.
07:35So Duncan Robinson can fill that vacuum.
07:37McCollum has been shooting a lot more threes this year and connecting on a lot more as a result.
07:4237% on the season.
07:45Atlanta back to within one.
07:46Both teams shooting exceptionally well to start the game.
07:49Like I said, both teams shooting exceptionally well to start the game.
07:53That was a 10 a.m. shoot-around jumper.
07:56Not much resistance.
07:59Three-point advantage.
08:01Alexander Walker spinning and connecting.
08:06Three for three from the field for Nikhil Alexander-Walker.
08:10Signed as a free agent after spending last year with Minnesota.
08:14Ball knocked away.
08:15Here come the Hawks in transition.
08:17Johnson elevates and lays it home.
08:21Timeout, Pistons.
08:24The Hawks taking a one-point lead when we come back.
08:31Welcome back, everyone, to NBA Wednesday presented by State Farm.
08:35Tonight's playoff push is brought to you by Advil.
08:37Atlanta has surged up to the number six seed in the Eastern Conference by virtue of winning 12 of the
08:44last 13.
08:45Tim, some people question the quality of those wins and their opponents during that run.
08:51But tonight then becomes a nice acid test for them.
08:54Well, for a team with a younger core, it starts somewhere.
08:57And where that typically has to start is beat the teams you're supposed to.
09:00They did catch some teams at the start of this winning streak that are lottery bound.
09:05There's no doubt.
09:06But then they had a really good win against the Magic.
09:07And now you get a real test.
09:09It gives you a gauge of where you are as a team.
09:11Out of the timeout.
09:14Turin rolls hard.
09:15Catches the lob.
09:16Smoked the dunk.
09:17And here comes Gabe Benson, who checked in during the break.
09:23Around the screen by Okonwu.
09:25Wide open, Daniels.
09:26Not a great three-point shooter.
09:28Under 20% on the season.
09:35Thompson on the wing.
09:37Into the corner, Ron Holland, pardon me, Jenkins.
09:40Turin inside.
09:41Boy, he is having his way in the paint right now, Tim.
09:44Four of six from the field already.
09:47Very few bigs in this league right now are sealing smaller defenders better than Jalen Dern.
09:51Once he gets you on his back, he is going to stay there, put his hand in the air,
09:55and then he's got that soft touch around the rim.
09:59Here's Daniels.
10:02Jenkins goes under the screen.
10:04Great shot off the window by Dyson Daniels.
10:07That was a lot harder that he just made that look.
10:10That's some crazy English that he put on that basketball.
10:13Headed left and getting it up there with his right hand.
10:15Robinson turns it over.
10:16Jenkins tried to take it back, but he fouled Gabe Vincent in the process.
10:23And that's going to be a foul against Danis Jenkins.
10:26One more look at that shot.
10:28Yeah, he made this look like a practice shot.
10:29Look at that.
10:30He flipped it.
10:31He didn't really even stay with it with any sort of extension.
10:34He just put some George Girvin-like spit on that thing.
10:38Perfect English to get it to go.
10:40And that's the next time he touched it after that air ball three.
10:44So, he wanted to atone, and he certainly did.
10:47Good to see him bounce back in the next sequence.
10:49Sideline out of bounds.
10:51Thompson comes out of the ball game.
10:53Detroit's human stop sign defensively.
10:55And, Tim, how surprised are you that Atlanta is running right through the number two defense in the NBA right
11:02now?
11:02Well, Detroit has not made them feel him yet.
11:04And that's exactly why Jamie Bickerstaff took that timeout.
11:08And out of the timeout, Atlanta continues to operate now.
11:12Ten for twelve and six for seven from the three-point line.
11:15This is very atypical for Detroit defensively.
11:18Jenkins drives baseline.
11:20Steps through.
11:21Draws the foul on Risa Shea.
11:24And he'll go to the free-throw line for a couple of shots.
11:26What a great story this young man is.
11:28Danis Jenkins out of St. John's.
11:30Started collegiately at the University of Pacific under the former NBA star Damon Stoddermeyer.
11:36Then played for Rick Pitino at Iona.
11:38Then transferred to St. John's with Pitino.
11:41Who told the front office,
11:44You will not regret signing this guy.
11:47And they haven't.
11:48Played mostly in the G League on a two-way deal last year.
11:52And just recently was converted to an NBA standard contract.
11:56And he has had some big moments of brilliance for the Pistons.
11:59And we talked with J.B. Biggerstep about that.
12:02Cade Cunningham goes down.
12:03You obviously have to put the ball in somebody else's hands.
12:06And he said Danis Jenkins is a natural-born leader.
12:09And at no point is he phased by added responsibility.
12:12And he has clearly stepped up as their lead decision maker without their best player right now.
12:20Here's Daniels around the screen.
12:23Johnson sees two again.
12:24That low gather is a little bit strong.
12:27Daniels inside with the stick back.
12:30Boy, Tyson Daniels has been lethal in the paint.
12:32Got some long wings on this team.
12:34And they're going to crash from the opposite wing or opposite corner when shots go up.
12:38They've got three or four guys that have free reign at the rim.
12:51And there's going to be a foul against Detroit as Jock Landale tried to corral the loose ball.
12:58Kevin Herter coming into the ballgame for Detroit for the first time tonight.
13:01Along with Nikhil Alexander-Walker for the Hawks.
13:05That foul, by the way, was against people Paul Paul Reed of the Pistons.
13:12Pistons' team is deep.
13:15Talked about it in the open.
13:16J.B. Pickerstaff using his bench liberally.
13:20Johnson short.
13:25And lost the handle underneath.
13:27He felt like he got grabbed when he secured that offensive rebound.
13:30He put it down to gather.
13:32He was about to go up off two feet.
13:34Trying to finish that at the rim.
13:36But he got raked and he was the last one to touch it.
13:39Read out top.
13:45Jenkins inside.
13:47And they'll turn it over.
13:51Atlanta has pretty good defenders on the perimeter.
13:55We were talking about earlier with Daniels and Alexander-Walker.
13:59We talked so much about the Pistons, right?
14:01And where they've been all year defensively.
14:03The second defensive-rated team in the NBA.
14:05But you take these seasons in segments if you're other teams.
14:08For the Atlanta Hawks, they have been the second-best defensive team in the league
14:12over the last 15 games when this winning streak really began.
14:16That's where the main growth has come from.
14:18They're competing on every play and they have the personnel to do it.
14:22Jonathan Kaminga getting ready to come into the ballgame for Coach Snyder.
14:27He got a jump ball.
14:29And Reid ties up Risa Shea and will have a jump ball.
14:35Jonathan Kaminga still finding his rhythm and making incremental improvement game to game.
14:41Had 16 a couple of nights ago in their win against Memphis in Atlanta.
14:45Including four of six from downtown.
14:49And so far his fit, Tim, seems to be pretty seamless.
14:53Well, he gives them something they need.
14:55They need a wing that can put down attack, draw fouls.
14:58Chris Snyder said that's an element he has brought to their offense.
15:01And he's been surprised at his commitment defensively and his concentration and on-ball effort as well.
15:08Bird finds Reid, drives it on Landale.
15:12Tough shot off the window.
15:16Reid getting more of a burns because of the fact that Isaiah Stewart is still out with an injury.
15:21Alexander Walker knocks down yet another three ball.
15:24Shooting right around 40% on the season for the Hawks.
15:29He's up to double figures already with 10.
15:33Bird.
15:35Tipped up a couple of times, no good.
15:37Here's Jalen Johnson.
15:38Nice hit ahead to Resa Shea.
15:40Punching it home.
15:41Oh, he hurt some feelings with that one.
15:44And what a great throw ahead by Johnson.
15:46That was on a rope.
15:47That ball traveled probably 50 feet in the air.
15:50And he got there before Jenkins could react.
15:54Vincent with a pull of three.
15:57Jenkins with a rebound.
15:58Falls to the court.
15:59And we're going to have a loose ball foul against Atlanta and Resa Shea.
16:04But you talked about that laser-like outlet a moment ago.
16:07Well, Atlanta wants to play with pace.
16:09Get out and run.
16:10And Jalen Johnson is the guy to reward you.
16:13Resa Shea throwing it down.
16:18It's time for tonight's DraftKings Sportsbook.
16:21Player Pulse.
16:22Look at Jalen Johnson on the season.
16:27And Jalen Duren for Detroit.
16:29Well, DraftKings is the number one sportsbook for live betting.
16:32Use promo code SPLASH when you sign up.
16:35And, boy, that guy's checking a lot of boxes done.
16:38And he's already halfway to a season assist average of eight.
16:42And this one right here was impressive because Danish Jenkins, you can see right here, he's backpedaling.
16:46He's relaxed because he thinks he's got a perfect angle for Resa Shea.
16:51But the ball gets on him so fast because of the velocity that Jalen Johnson puts on that.
16:57He's got the ball so much.
16:58And he's going to see a lot of traffic.
17:00I think it's a really good defensive team.
17:02There's going to be a lot of opportunities for Jalen Johnson to get assist tonight.
17:05And Kevin Herter connects on his first field goal attempt.
17:08First foul, the Chicago Bulls came over in that trade.
17:13Herter looking to discover his, or rediscover his three-point shooting stroke at this point.
17:19Landale hands it off to Kaminga.
17:22Braves it out to the wing.
17:23One more, one more.
17:25They've got the Pistons in rotation.
17:28Landale with the ball.
17:29Alexander with his back and lays it home.
17:32Well, that's a pretty possession right there.
17:34I mean, you get around the horn really twice.
17:36Dribble penetration, everybody touches it.
17:39And then Landale's effort creates a second-chance opportunity.
17:43Herter off the mark from downtown.
17:45Atlanta number one in assists per game in the NBA.
17:50Saw evidence of that on the last sequence.
17:52Alexander Walker out front.
17:56Landale with the screen on Thompson.
17:57That's going to be a foul against the Pistons.
18:02This is nice.
18:04This is Jonathan Kaminga getting downhill.
18:05We talked about that already.
18:07And then you love it when it goes all the way around the horn to a shooter.
18:11And then the effort by Landale creates this opportunity for Walker,
18:15who's off to an incredible start.
18:16Five for five from the field already.
18:18Three, 12 points.
18:20Alexander Walker, the cousin of Shea Gilgis Alexander.
18:25Spoke with Vaughn Alexander recently.
18:27He recalled the days when Nakeel and SGA would shovel snow and then go off to practice.
18:34Toronto.
18:35Tomingo from 15.
18:38Tipped up.
18:40And Turin comes out of the pack with the board.
18:45LaVert.
18:46A little thirsty here.
18:48Working against Alexander Walker.
18:51Gets it back from deep.
18:53And it comes off to Risa Shea.
18:55One minute to go in the opening quarter.
18:58Atlanta hanging 35 on the number two defense in the NBA.
19:09Tomingo guarded by Holland.
19:13Alexander Walker snatches it back on the cross over man.
19:17He's on an early heater.
19:1914 points of the game for Alexander Walker.
19:22And done it every way.
19:23He's hit threes.
19:24He's taken you off the dribble into the paint.
19:26There he was with a mid-range stop on a dive pull-up jumper.
19:31Herder couldn't connect.
19:35Alexander Walker in a rush.
19:37Oh, he gave it away.
19:38Lost it.
19:39Ron Holland flying charter.
19:42Got an easy one.
19:44And the lead is down to eight.
19:47Mucks can run it all the way down.
19:51McCullin' out top against good ball pressure from Thompson.
19:55Knocked it away.
19:57But it goes out of bounds in the backcourt with 5.8 to go.
20:01CJ McCollum looking at the official like saying, wait a second, man.
20:05This dude's already 6'7".
20:06Strong, quick, laterally.
20:09As good as anybody in this league defensively.
20:12And he can put his hands on you a little bit at the half-court line.
20:18Going to work quickly here.
20:20Kaminga does.
20:22Tipped out right back to McCullum.
20:24It'll count.
20:25And that's the end of the first 12 minutes of play.
20:27Atlanta shooting a scorching 63% from the field.
20:34Nikhil Alexander-Walker leading the way with 14 on a perfect 6 of 6.
20:40Back after this.
20:44It's time for tonight's access brought to you by Mercedes.
20:47We're on the sidelines with Nikhil Alexander-Walker.
20:49Nikhil, you and your teammates are off to a great start offensively.
20:526 for 6 from the field for you.
20:53What do you like about the shots you guys are creating right now?
20:56I think the ball's just moving.
20:58It's popping.
20:58They're trying to be physical.
20:59That's who they are.
21:00That's it.
21:01That's their MO.
21:02And I think we're handling the pressure well.
21:04We're moving the ball.
21:05We're moving our bodies.
21:06We're playing with pace.
21:07And we're not allowing their physicality to slow down.
21:10Defensively, you guys have been great since the break.
21:12What's the key in defending against these guys?
21:14They have a lot of threats.
21:16You know, Dern's a big body down in the paint.
21:18It's just about showing a crowd.
21:20Trying to rotate.
21:22Be together.
21:22Talk.
21:23I think early we got into rotation, but we weren't on time.
21:26With our rotations.
21:27And that's what I think the back and forth was.
21:29The scoring, the high scoring as of late.
21:31But we were able to settle down, make adjustments, and respond.
21:34Thanks, Akil.
21:35Thank you.
21:35Guys.
21:37Pretty concise explanation by Alexander Walker right there.
21:40His team up 37 to 29.
21:44You know what's incredible, Jonesy, is they've got 37 points.
21:47And they've shot the way that they have to start this game.
21:49That's their seventh turnover.
21:51It's a really high number.
21:52When you're 13 minutes into a game, if they had taken better care of the ball,
21:57they'd be north of 40 in that first quarter for sure.
22:00Further around the Reed screen on the baseline.
22:03Nice pocket pass for the slam.
22:06And it's Reed punches at home.
22:09He's got four points.
22:15Ten different players have been in the ball game already for J.B. Pickerstaff.
22:18Landale launching off the mark.
22:21It'll come back the other way to the Pistons.
22:24Pistons 52 and 19 overall.
22:2727 and 8 at home.
22:33Herder off the wide pin.
22:37Spins and fires.
22:40Now one for three.
22:44Daniels, good play by Herder defensively.
22:46Got the steal off on his own.
22:48And reversed it home.
22:55Not only does he get the deflection, really smart in the open floor.
22:58The way he's slowed down to let the defender bump into him.
23:02And then that created the space he could get to the rim.
23:05Kispert knocking down the three ball.
23:06Another one for Atlanta who lead by seven.
23:09Holland back out to Reed the trailer.
23:14Green for three.
23:17Holland trying to hustle for the offensive rebound.
23:20But it's out of bound off of him.
23:22It'll be Atlanta basketball.
23:26Quinn Snyder makes the call.
23:36Call him off the Kaminga screen.
23:39Nine on the shot clock.
23:44Kispert lost control, but he was fouled.
23:46Reed calling for a challenge potentially.
23:54Foul is going to go against Holland.
23:57Foul is on Reed.
23:59Foul is going to go against Reed.
24:03Definitely not in legal guarding position.
24:05That's going to be his second personal foul.
24:07Yeah, he was sliding when he hit him with his chest.
24:10I think he was more reacting to the fact that he did get a lot of ball when he finally
24:14reached in.
24:14But the foul really had been committed before that.
24:17Kaminga launching the three.
24:18Way off.
24:19And here's Jenkins.
24:21Picked off by McCollum.
24:23Detroit turns it over.
24:27McCollum for three.
24:29Tipped up another time.
24:31Kispert controls.
24:35Kispert on the drive.
24:37Reed with a good contest.
24:39Actually fouled.
24:41You hear the whistle.
24:44Paul Reed with a couple of quick fouls back to back.
24:47That's going to be his third.
24:49And we mentioned the fact that without Isaiah Stewart available, a little bit short at the five spot.
24:55One more look at that foul against Reed.
25:00Yeah, I think that's a foul.
25:02He's reaching across really both wrists.
25:04But definitely made contact with his right wrist as Kispert was trying to release it.
25:08Well, it's time for tonight's national TV schedule brought to you by Samsung Galaxy.
25:12Tomorrow night on NBA TV, Knicks Hornets at 7 Eastern.
25:15Friday, doubleheader on NBA TV.
25:18Heat, Cavs at 730, followed by Mavs Trailblazers.
25:21And Saturday on Prime Video, it's Spurs, Bucs at 3.
25:25And over on ABC, it's Pistons Timberwolves at 530.
25:29For more on these games, please go to NBA.com or visit the NBA app.
25:34Kispert goes 0 for 2.
25:37Those were the first two free throws by the Hawks in the game.
25:42Jenkins at the sticks at control.
25:46The Pistons offensively inside.
25:49Breen spins on Kaminga.
25:53And Atlanta with possession.
25:58Bingo working against Herter.
26:02McCollum wide open, unabated, couldn't convert.
26:09Detroit got away with one there.
26:10They over-pursued the basketball.
26:12He sent too many to flood on penetration.
26:14You're not in position to recover to the three-point line.
26:17CJ McCollum just missed a great look.
26:21That's going to be a foul against McCollum at the other end, sending Jenkins to the free-throw line.
26:27He'll have a couple of shots.
26:29Detroit will shoot its third and fourth free-throws of the game.
26:34I mentioned a moment ago that Atlanta just shot its first two with Kispert at the line.
26:40How is Detroit different, if at all, Tim, with Jenkins out there running the point as opposed to Cunningham?
26:47Well, they're definitely not going to be as reliant on middle-of-the-floor ball screen offense.
26:52With Cade Cunningham and Duren bringing the two guys that primarily are going to run that, put pressure on you.
26:57It's going to be a little bit different.
26:58He's going to play a little bit faster, actually, up the floor than Cunningham.
27:03He's going to try to get up in the gaps, create early transition opportunities at a little bit of a
27:08quicker rate.
27:08But the half-court offense is just not going to be as dominant in that middle-of-the-floor area
27:13with two players.
27:15Lead is down to six for the Hawks.
27:19Here's Daniels.
27:20Johnson off the wide action.
27:23He's been quiet offensively, but he has passed the ball well.
27:26Has four assists.
27:27Gets it back here.
27:29Clear out the side for him.
27:31Spins away from the double and knocks it home.
27:34Tough bucket.
27:36That is tough.
27:36I mean, that is just so patient.
27:38Got deeper into the clock.
27:40Pretty good closeout earlier in the possession, but he knew if he could just get into that dribble rhythm,
27:44he's got the length to spin baseline over any defender.
27:48Duren had knocked away, but a foul going to go against Dyson Daniels.
27:51One more look at Johnson.
27:53Yeah, this is pretty.
27:54You see what he catches in, and he knows right now there's going to be a double team coming from
27:59the top side.
27:59He wants to get to the baseline the entire time, and he knows he's just got a higher release point
28:05that Green is able to get to defensively, and that's right in his wheelhouse,
28:10in that middle area of the floor that he loves to operate.
28:13Johnson told me about his summer workouts with LeBron James with their trainer,
28:16Chris Johnson, out in Sherman Oaks, the L.A. area in California.
28:21He said that he realized the importance of preparation A and B,
28:25treating every workout, every practice like it's a game from LeBron James this summer.
28:31Certainly paid off in paying dividends for him right now.
28:35On the foul, it'll be two shots coming up for Duren.
28:40And, you know, Jalen Johnson was actually tracking towards an all-star appearance last year
28:45before he suffered his injury.
28:50Duren at the free throw line.
28:52Katie has more on Jalen Johnson.
28:54Well, Mark, Tim, during the offseason, C.J. McCollum will work out in L.A. for a few weeks.
28:58Well, a few years ago, he said he was working out at 6 a.m. because he has kids, and
29:02they get up at 8.30.
29:03He said you usually don't see young guys work out that early in L.A.
29:07Tyrese Maxey's kind of an exception.
29:09But he said there was Jalen Johnson, and McCollum remembers telling him,
29:12you're not going to be very, very good.
29:14You're going to be a great player.
29:15And this was before he was an all-star.
29:17But it's the work ethic, McCollum says.
29:19It's the preparation.
29:20It's the love and the joy for the game that makes Johnson successful.
29:23And now that they're teammates, McCollum says he gets to see that every single day, and that's been special.
29:27Yeah, he's from a basketball family, a wonderful, loving family.
29:31Mom and dad both played collegiate basketball.
29:33Brothers do as well.
29:34Here's Kaminga pulling from the wing and connecting on his first three.
29:39Lead is up to nine for the Feisty Hawks.
29:43Evan Herter's former team, Jenkins, in rush-hour traffic,
29:47had it knocked away by Jalen Johnson, playing both ends of the court.
29:54It would be baseline out of bounds.
29:56Detroit basketball is down by nine.
30:04Remember Kevin Herter is a member of the Hawks when they made it to the conference finals that year.
30:12Green from the corner.
30:14Got it.
30:21And that's a welcome sight for any of Detroit's wings that occupy the corners of Jalen Johnson once again.
30:29Pulls up, knocks down that jump shot.
30:32But Detroit, the corner three's there for them a lot because of the traffic in the lane with Durant and
30:37Cunningham.
30:38So green hitting that three is very important for the Pistons.
30:41Jenkins from outside, couldn't connect, rebounded by the Hawks.
30:45And here's Kaminga.
30:50Okongwu to Alexander Walker and deflected out of bounds by Jenkins.
30:56It'll stay at that end.
30:57Atlanta ball with the lead when we come back to Detroit.
31:00The NBA on ESPN.
31:02Presented all season long by State Farm.
31:05It's brought to you by Advil Liquid Gels.
31:07Targets pain caused by inflammation for fast and strong relief.
31:15Three-point shooting.
31:16One of the prevailing storylines so far, especially on the ledger for the Atlanta Hawks.
31:20Nine of 19 so far.
31:22It's really impacted a lot of things in this game.
31:25And it's the best answer against a team that is committed to protecting the paint the way that Detroit is.
31:29You have to use their reaction defensively against them and knock down perimeter shots to loosen up those driving lanes.
31:37We got a seven-point game, and you've got a plus-18 differential at the three-point line.
31:41It's really been the story here at the start.
31:44These are typical numbers for the Pistons, but this is an incredibly hot start for the Atlanta Hawks tonight.
31:49They started five of five from deep tonight.
31:53Kispert missed the floater and rebounded by Duren.
31:57Meanwhile, Tim, Detroit hasn't exactly been able to impose their style so far, had they?
32:02Because they lead the league in point paint.
32:04They haven't.
32:06Yeah, though they have not.
32:07And part of the reason is because they've been taking the ball out of the net quite a bit.
32:11And they haven't had the opportunities to set up against Atlanta's defense while they're in transition.
32:17It's been mostly half-court defense that they've seen tonight.
32:21Detroit trailing by 10.
32:24Duren.
32:26Robinson on the triple handoff.
32:28Back to Duren.
32:29Slick ball movement.
32:30They've got the Hawks in rotation.
32:33One pass too many, perhaps.
32:35Tipped out of bounds off of Thompson.
32:37It'll come back to Atlanta.
32:38That's their seventh turnover.
32:40Yeah, Laverge has tried to do too much with that.
32:42He could have taken the three, or he could have taken a little pull-up there in that foul line
32:47area.
32:47Got hung up in the air.
32:49Didn't exactly know where he wanted to go with that.
32:55Alexander Walker out front to Johnson.
32:59Inside threads the needle to Kispert, who draws the hit.
33:03And will be rewarded with a couple of foul shots.
33:05But a nice dime drop there by Jalen Johnson, who already has four assists.
33:10That's a second foul on Thompson.
33:15With the Hawks leading by 10 already.
33:18That's the third team foul against Detroit.
33:28Shoot.
33:29Shoot.
33:29I forgot to confirm I took my meds yesterday.
33:32Simplifying care for people with rare, chronic, and complex conditions.
33:36Okay.
33:36Time to work.
33:37It's why the WNBA and NBA trust their health to Evernorth Health Services.
33:45Second foul shot, good.
33:47J.B. Bickerstaff had an interesting comment when we asked him about his team's ability to play well without Cade
33:53Cunningham.
33:53He says, we do more of who we are without doing too much.
33:59That was pretty insightful.
34:00Maybe that's a little too much from Laverge.
34:04Missed everything.
34:05But his team down by 12, under 5 and a half to go in the first half.
34:09McCollum and Dyson Daniels coming into the game for Kuminga and Kisper.
34:13You know, the other thing we're noticing here, you know, you go back to last year, even in that postseason,
34:18that they played against the New York Knicks.
34:19The environment in the building was incredible.
34:22This place has been quiet because they're not seeing their Pistons defense exert itself on this Atlanta Hawks team.
34:29So this crowd is trying to get into it, but you've got to string together stuff to make that happen.
34:33Johnson sprees it out for three.
34:35Another dime drop for Johnson and another three for Kong Woon, the Hawks.
34:40Now 10 of 20 from downtown.
34:43A 9-0 run right now for Atlanta.
34:46Daniels, man, took Laverge's cornbread, lays it home.
34:51And right now, J.B. Bickerstaff and the Pistons, busted, disgusted, and not to be trusted.
35:01Look at the numbers that Kate Cunningham has put up so far this year, heading towards an All-NBA selection.
35:07They're missing his fourth game in a row tonight, the result of a collapsed lung.
35:11Katie George has more.
35:12Well, Mark, C.J. McCollum for Atlanta has actually experienced a collapsed lung twice in the past.
35:17He said the hardest part of the recovery is being forced to rest.
35:21He said you have to hit idle.
35:22You can't do anything until the organ heals on its own.
35:25So that could be frustrating.
35:26You've got to have patience.
35:27He also said both he and Kate Cunningham are represented by the same agency.
35:31So when Cade got hurt, his agent immediately called C.J.'s reps so Cunningham could see the same pulmonologist who
35:38treated McCollum during his recovery.
35:40So, interesting, they have the same doctor.
35:42McCollum, of course, wishing Cade a speedy recovery.
35:45He's so vitally important to the Pistons.
35:48At both ends of the court, Harris missing on the turnaround.
35:52Can have a loose ball foul underneath against Atlanta.
35:55That'll be the 14th foul against the Hawks.
35:58Detroit with three.
36:00And we hope to see Kate Cunningham back on the court soon, of course, in full health and strength and
36:08restoration.
36:09That's a second personal foul against McCollum.
36:15Robinson off the pin down.
36:17Clean look and knocks it home.
36:22Duncan Robinson leading the Pistons shooting 40% from deep on the season.
36:27He did his work early on that one.
36:29Nice job setting up his defender to utilize that screen so he can come off square up and have plenty
36:35of time.
36:36Shooter as good as Robinson gets this kind of time, you typically know the result of that.
36:43Walks him in, releases.
36:44Nice job there as well by Dern.
36:46He forced Alexander Walker to run wide around that screen.
36:50He was not able to get there in time and Duncan Robinson even had enough time to really kind of
36:55get his feet set and on balance before he went up to release that.
37:00Robinson back in the area where he played his collegiate basketball at Michigan after a successful tenure with the Miami
37:06Heat.
37:1012 points in that win against Los Angeles 48 hours ago as Johnson knocks down the second free throw.
37:17Atlanta in charge by 15.
37:23Thompson on the handle.
37:26Robinson around the Durance screen.
37:28Again, this one comes off though.
37:30Johnson with a grab and go.
37:33Bounce pass of Kongwu with the layup and Johnson showing off his passing skills, Jim.
37:39Yeah, that's the key.
37:40Handling the basketball with your head up as he's coming up the court and he's starting to get some traffic.
37:45Defensively, he never took his eyes off of the floor area.
37:50Ahead, Kongwu rewarded for that.
37:52Thompson with a nice looking jump hook with the left inside.
37:55Makes it a 16 point game again as we head towards three and a half to go in the first
38:00half.
38:00Johnson off the in and out dribble.
38:02Spins and pulls and connects.
38:04That's the spin I was talking about earlier.
38:07He loves that one in particular.
38:09Going to his right, spinning back.
38:11Early in the game, the Pistons had a second defender right there as he came out of the spin.
38:15He had one-on-one opportunity that time.
38:18Robinson off the Jenkins.
38:19Quickly inside.
38:20Duran off glass with the left hand.
38:23Good ball movement that time by the Pistons.
38:26Dyson Daniels inside a Kongwu.
38:29And that's going to be a foul against a Kongwu.
38:34It's going to be his first personal foul.
38:38And Jalen Johnson putting it all in his place.
38:40You see here his head the entire time.
38:42His vision is up the floor.
38:44And I think his teammates now know enough.
38:46Keep running.
38:47You're going to get rewarded.
38:48This is that spin he loves.
38:49He's got such a long stride.
38:51He gets the defender completely retreating.
38:53Stops, spin into his jump shot.
38:56Thompson with a nice roll to the bucket for the layup.
39:00Under three minutes to go.
39:01The lead down to 14.
39:04And this is the big area of improvement in Johnson's game as a primary ball handler and creator.
39:10Daniels with the rebound.
39:12Sprays it out to a Kongwu.
39:13That three comes off.
39:15And Robinson controls.
39:18A chance to get it down to 12 now for the Pistons.
39:22The uber confident Jenkins out to Robinson.
39:27Run their split action.
39:29Robinson pops out.
39:33Robinson for three.
39:37I'm not sure if Daniels bumped him.
39:40But that was incredible.
39:41Individual effort on the part of Dyson Daniels.
39:43That entire possession to disrupt that three-point shot by Duncan Robinson.
39:48And Durant got a piece of that shot at the other end.
39:51Thompson working against Johnson.
39:53Got him with the quick shot underneath.
39:57LaSar Thompson with eight in the ballgame.
40:00The lead down to 12.
40:01Under two minutes to go in this very high-scoring first half.
40:07Johnson on a nice back cut and punch.
40:10Well, you get that wide screen on the opposite side of the floor.
40:13Everybody is lifted.
40:15That has to be switched or at minimum bumped on Jalen Johnson when he makes that cut.
40:21And miscommunication leads to his easiest look of the night.
40:25Jalen Johnson with 12 points, six assists, a couple of rebounds.
40:29Second in the NBA in triple-doubles on the season.
40:35Jenkins could make the catch.
40:37That pass coming in a little bit hot from Jalen Durant.
40:40And off the turnover, there'll be Hawks basketball.
40:44Johnson, meanwhile, with 10 points this quarter for Atlanta.
40:49I'm not sure Ozzie Smith was digging that one down.
40:52That thing had some steam on it.
40:54Couldn't turn that for the double play, but McCollum connects with the middie.
40:59Lead up to 14.
41:01D.J. McCollum with 11 points.
41:04And another Detroit giveaway.
41:07Johnson out to McCollum.
41:10Johnson relocates for three.
41:12Butter.
41:13Jalen Johnson heating up in this period.
41:16He's got 13 now.
41:21Every All-Star break, he went back to Los Angeles to spend four or five days working out.
41:26Even though he made the All-Star team this year, he still got back in the gym.
41:31As Harris stops the hemorrhaging for Detroit.
41:34The thing you can really see about Jalen Johnson, and you really see it here against an elite defense, he's
41:39just never sped up.
41:40Everything is done at the pace that he wants to play at.
41:43What'd you say?
41:44Look at the versatility.
41:46Here with the tip-in, gets on the offensive glass, but, you know, his rhythm to his game is just
41:52so controlled.
41:53For an elite athlete, it's very rare in a young player to not get ahead of yourself and play too
41:59fast.
41:59And a rebound and a great outlet by Jalen Johnson.
42:03Robinson, room service at the other end, and the Pistons bleeding right now, down by 21 at the crib here
42:11in Detroit.
42:14They can walk it across and run it all the way down.
42:19But what a second quarter for Jalen Johnson.
42:24Jenkins rejects the screen from Duran.
42:27Robinson for three, wide open and cashing out.
42:30With 4.5 to go, they got a little bit of time.
42:33The Hawks do.
42:35Daniels in a rush.
42:36And that's the end of the first 24 minutes of play.
42:39Atlanta leading 73-55.
42:44Coming up on the halftime, presented by Hyundai.
42:47Wendy Malika, Coach Malone, and Perk in the studio.
42:50Talking about the wild, wild Western Conference.
42:53But here tonight, Jalen Johnson has enough to feed the needy.
43:00He's cutting the check on those threes.
43:03Hawks with the lead and coming up after the break.
43:06It's the Hyundai halftime report with Malika Andrews, Michael Malone, Kendrick Perkins, and Wendy.
43:18Welcome back, everyone, to NBA Wednesday, presented by State Farm.
43:21Part of the playoff push presented by Advil.
43:26Well, the heartbeat for the Pistons right now, a little weaker than it usually is.
43:31Jalen Johnson has taken this game by the throat as we get ready to start the third quarter.
43:37But first, a look at our first-half stats brought to you by Brooks.
43:41Look at the three-point shooting differential.
43:44Atlanta is plus 18 when it comes to three-pointers and fast break points as well with a decided advantage.
43:52As we check out our shot monitor, brought to you by Ensure.
43:57Jalen Johnson, 6 of 7 from the field in the second quarter, 15 overall in the period.
44:03And he really, Tim, took control of this game in that period.
44:07I think we gave him an appropriate amount of hype leading into this game.
44:11And he more than delivered.
44:13You just see the all-around game of Jalen Johnson.
44:15And this was an example of a red-hot team coming in that was allowed to get into their rhythm
44:20right away.
44:21We just showed you the scoring of Jalen Johnson, but how about the playmaking?
44:25Because that was on full display as well.
44:27His ability to find teammates up the floor because of his ability to handle it in the overfloor and transition.
44:35The size and strength to throw it ahead with velocity.
44:39Allowing the Hawks to get out and run and convert easy opportunities,
44:43which is so important against a team as good defensively as Detroit.
44:47Now the question becomes, what is the response of the Detroit Pistons coming out of the locker room here to
44:52start the third quarter?
44:53Because defensively, that is not what they're used to, certainly.
44:58Let's see what J.B. Bickerstaff has countered with tactically to plug some of those defensive holes.
45:04This Hawks team getting a bunch of points on that board in the first half.
45:1073.
45:12Jenkins will bring it up against Dyson Daniels.
45:19Harris out top.
45:21It will hand off to Thompson.
45:26Jenkins.
45:28Shot clock down to six.
45:30Harris inside for Duren.
45:33And Duren draws the foul against the Kongwood.
45:36That might be the Achilles heel of this Atlanta defense.
45:41Not a lot of rim protection when you look at their size of that position.
45:45No, you trade off some of the size and rim protection for the versatility defensively to have switchability.
45:51And I think that's been working for them as you've seen their defensive metrics just continue to surge over the
45:58last six weeks or so.
46:00All the way up to, as I said, over the last 15 games, second in the league.
46:03And I think that's the tradeoff.
46:05They've never had the versatility to take away as much space in the half court as they can and give
46:11up a little bit more size at the rim.
46:14Quinn Snyder told us there are four different iterations of this team already this year where they've had to integrate
46:21C.J. McCollum, Corey Kisper, Kuminga, Gabe Vinson.
46:27But right now playing their best basketball of the season.
46:31Kongwu off the elbow.
46:32Alexander Walker working against Jenkins.
46:35Touches paint.
46:36And that one rattles on to Duren.
46:42Jenkins off the drag screen.
46:44Goes around the world.
46:46Robinson racing up for three.
46:48Got it.
46:51And he hit a couple there toward the second half of that second quarter.
46:56And he knew he was feeling pretty good.
46:58But looking for that first touch here in the third.
47:01And he ran a long way to get this one.
47:04Nice job just finding that pocket off penetration.
47:06You saw C.J. McCollum again just turned his head slightly.
47:09And Duncan Robinson continued to pursue the basketball.
47:12And he had it ready to go before it even hit his hand.
47:16He actually had a career-high 10 threes against Atlanta several years ago.
47:20Right now, four of six.
47:24Boy, look at Thompson move his feet defensively.
47:26A Kongwu playing out of the pocket.
47:28He walked with it.
47:29Actually, call it a double dribble, whatever you want to.
47:31It's a turnover.
47:33And Detroit seems to be a little bit more intentional at both ends of the court to start this quarter.
47:37And it was hard to see from this angle.
47:38But I didn't think his hessie was that tight.
47:40So I knew something must have taken place.
47:42We were sort of blocked off for what he did right there.
47:45But, yeah, Detroit here to start the half over the first minute and 15 here.
47:49They've gotten a couple of stops and finding a little bit of rhythm, at least defensively right now.
47:54Jenkins with a nice back cut for the slam.
47:57And they start on a 7-0 run here in the third quarter.
48:02They lead quickly down to 11.
48:07It's a 10-0 run going back to the first half.
48:12Harris switches on to McCollum.
48:14Float game a little bit strong.
48:16And here's Jenkins with pace.
48:22Duren posting up.
48:24Had a little one on him.
48:25Couldn't convert.
48:26Got the second one.
48:27Buy one, get one free.
48:29Jalen Duren.
48:33There's just not much Atlanta's going to be able to do playing a smaller lineup if Jalen Duren gets an
48:39early seal like this.
48:40Dyson Daniels is an elite defensive player.
48:43But he's not going to be able to displace or dislodge Jalen Duren.
48:47And then he's got the easy cleanup on the glass.
48:50Tell you what, when it comes to Jalen Duren, every day looks like it's been a shoulder day in the
48:54gym for him, Tim.
48:56He is a big load, a behemoth underneath, completing the three-point play.
49:02He's got 17 in the ballgame, and in a blink, the lead is down to eight.
49:09Let's see if Johnson can pick up in this third quarter where he finished off in the second.
49:15Iso against Harris.
49:19Okongwu with six on the clock.
49:20Alexander Walker sprays it out to a wide open McCollum, and Robinson clears.
49:30Danis Jenkins out to Robinson around the Duren screen.
49:33Thompson with the layup.
49:35Got it.
49:36Timeout Atlanta.
49:39That double-digit lead disintegrated under the asphyxiating defense from Detroit.
49:47Detroit, 12-0, out of the locker room.
49:51Detroit has this crowd in it.
50:00What a metamorphosis and turnaround by the Detroit Pistons over the last three years.
50:05Kate Cunningham talked about literally walking floors at night when they had that franchise and NBA league leading losing streak,
50:12and then turning it around to 44 wins last year, 52-19, and that series, pardon me, the last year,
50:22the playoff series against the Knicks.
50:23And what did the prospects look for them moving forward this year?
50:26Last year, they emerged, and they caught our attention, and they got into the playoffs.
50:31They gave the Knicks everything they could handle in that first-round series.
50:34This is a little different this year.
50:36They didn't sneak up on anybody, and their sights this year are on getting to the NBA Finals, and it's
50:42rare to make that leap in one season.
50:44You know, haven't won a playoff series collectively to the NBA Finals, but they believe their time is now to
50:50get there.
50:51Jenkins for three.
50:52Misses badly.
50:54Got it back off the carom.
50:56Harris inside through the contact.
50:58And the Pistons have whittled away to get it down to four already.
51:04Harris in double-figure scoring with ten.
51:08Johnson skip pass.
51:10Little rifle action.
51:11McCollum back to Daniels.
51:13Great ball move, but partially blocked by Thompson.
51:17Shot clock at six.
51:18And it's short by Alexander Walker.
51:24Duren had it knocked away, but he got fouled in the process.
51:27He's doing his work early.
51:30Asar Thompson should make all defense this year.
51:33I mentioned earlier that Jalen Johnson's rarely in a hurry.
51:36You need to be in a little bit more of a hurry if Asar Thompson's closing out at the three
51:41-point line.
51:41That's just great timing to get a piece of that.
51:43You've seen the defensive pressure and intensity pickups for the Pistons coming out of the locker room,
51:48as you knew it would in their response to that first half with Atlanta getting whatever they wanted to.
51:53Jenkins using the cash app.
51:56Banking that one home to make it a two-point contest.
52:01McCollum on the drive.
52:03Got it to go.
52:04Over two Pistons to make it a four-point game.
52:08But Detroit climbed back into this with brevity.
52:13Added up to a 19-0 run.
52:17Robinson with a catch-and-shoot three.
52:19Duren with the offensive board.
52:22And he draws the hit.
52:24Duren just bullying and bludgeoning that defense inside.
52:32Duren's a couple of free throws.
52:36He's right around 20 points and 10 rebounds on the season.
52:4064% from the field.
52:43You know, during his exit meeting, I'm told that they basically talked to him about what it would look like
52:50moving forward last year.
52:52And they told him that Bam Adebayo might be part of your roadmap to follow.
52:57That means running the floor at both ends and defending as well as Bam Adebayo does defensively.
53:03He's certainly the all-star that he earned this year.
53:06And that's a big ask because his body type is different, right?
53:11That's a lot of weight to carry end-to-end, but he's doing it.
53:13Time for tonight's national TV schedule brought to you by Hershey's tomorrow night on NBA TV.
53:18Knicks-Hornets at 7, Friday doubleheader on NBA TV.
53:22Heat-Cavs at 7.30, then Mavs-Trail Blazers.
53:25And Saturday on Prime Video, it's Spurs-Bucks at 3.
53:29And over on ABC, Pistons-Timberwolves at 5.30.
53:33For more on these games, please go to NBA.com or visit the NBA app.
53:39Duren knocks down both.
53:4421-2 run.
53:50Hawks running a little bit of stack pick-and-roll here.
53:54Johnson on the bounce.
53:56Got into Harris' body and drew the foul.
54:02Jalen Johnson with a chance for two more.
54:05That's the first foul against Detroit in this third quarter.
54:09Harris with his third personal foul.
54:14How does Atlanta get its offensive rhythm back to where they were making all those threes early?
54:19Yeah, I think, listen, a lot of this is the awareness on the part of the Detroit Pistons.
54:24They're just not giving as much space on the catch.
54:28And everything now Atlanta gets, they're going to have to put it down and work at it.
54:32But they're a good enough offensive team that they can adjust to it.
54:35I think now Detroit's pressure to start this half has been the difference here.
54:40And now let's see what Atlanta can do when they can start to operate in the half court to find
54:45some rhythm back again and understand the physicality.
54:48Detroit's bringing to it.
54:51Boy, Alexander Walker all over Robinson on the screen.
54:56Durn off the elbow.
54:59Jenkins surveys.
55:00Tough shot inside.
55:02Got it to go.
55:03Off glass.
55:05He's got 11.
55:10Five different Pistons in double-digit scoring.
55:15Johnson against Harris.
55:17Nice matchup here.
55:23Johnson had an ocean.
55:26Drives, spins, pulls.
55:29Oh, it went off of Duren.
55:32It looked like into his own bucket.
55:36Dyson Daniels there as well.
55:38Duren went up with one hand and he didn't really secure it.
55:41And it allowed Daniels to get in there and fight him for that basketball.
55:46And then he just got really a lucky roll to get that to go in the hoop.
55:51Robinson.
55:54In traffic out to Thompson.
55:56Harris with a clean look from the...
55:58And we're tied at 78.
56:03The Pistons have battled all the way back.
56:07Harris with 13.
56:12Good pressure by Duren.
56:14They push and blow up that set.
56:17Thompson with the steal.
56:18Elevates.
56:20The Pistons have surged ahead.
56:23Their first lead since 22-21.
56:25And the Hawks call timeout.
