00:26Hello everyone and welcome to another Anthem live stream.
00:29My name is Ben Irving. I'm one of the lead producers on the project and today I will be your
00:35host for the stream.
00:37Joining me we have two of our amazing developers. We have Francis and Leah. We'll have them do intros in
00:43a second.
00:44The topic of our stream today is going to be javelin personalization.
00:49So what that means is all the really cool ways you can personalize the appearance of your javelins and make
00:55yourself look really amazing.
00:56So we won't be covering things like loadouts and gear and weapons.
01:03We're just going to be focusing on the appearance of the javelin.
01:06So Francis and Leah, do you guys want to introduce yourselves please?
01:10Yeah, so I'm Francis Lacuna. I'm the character director on Anthem.
01:14And hey everyone, I'm Leah Schenkiewski. I'm a producer here on the Anthem team.
01:19Awesome. Welcome. So for the streams going forward, kind of what Mike and I thought we would do is we'd
01:24probably rotate hosting the show
01:26and then we'd bring on some of our awesome developers who know a lot more about the inner workings of
01:31the game than we did
01:32and are responsible for building it.
01:34So before we dive into this system, Francis, I just wanted to ask you, you know, many moons ago
01:41when we were thinking about, hey, how do we want players to be able to customize their appearances?
01:47What was some of the philosophy that went into, like what were you guys trying to achieve?
01:51Yeah, so the nice thing was starting with the new IP.
01:53One thing we really wanted to do on Anthem was fix some of the things we've done in the past
01:58on Bioware games
01:59when it came to your appearance. In a lot of our other games, like Mass Effect with Shepard, Shepard always
02:08looked great.
02:09The party always looked great. But when it came time to equipping new armors or if you get upgrades throughout
02:16the game,
02:17the armors always looked a little less great. They were always a little flatter.
02:22The quality wasn't as good as it should have been.
02:24So on this, with Anthem, what we did was we established our visual target first
02:29and then we deconstructed that and rebuilt the entire personalization system around that
02:35so that all the stuff you see in all our trailers, our cinematic assets,
02:38it is built with the same tools that the players will have to customize their actions.
02:45Awesome. And can we go in one level a little further?
02:48Yeah. So the next question is for you, Leah.
02:51So Francis and the team had these lofty goals of being able to do all this amazing stuff,
02:55which inherently is quite complicated.
02:58And you and your team had to build a system that supported this.
03:01So before we dive into how it all works, can you tell us a little bit about how you guys
03:06went into about designing the system?
03:09Yeah, absolutely.
03:10So I think for most of our UIs and the user experience is really driven around the idea that it
03:16should be frictionless,
03:17easy to use and sort of something that you can just spend time really enjoying the work that Francis has
03:24put together.
03:25So I don't want to say get out of the way, but essentially get out of the way.
03:29And so really what we've done here is the forge, which is where you'll be able to customize your loadouts.
03:38We've put all these little interaction points on the suit, which are your jumping points into all the places you
03:43can customize your XO.
03:45And that's your starting point.
03:48Cool. And so we're going to dive in here a second, but there's a lot to digest here.
03:53So do you mind, Leah, just describing what are kind of the main sections for how you can customize your
03:59appearance?
04:00And then we'll have Francis dive in and we'll get going.
04:02Sure. So as you can see, Francis is sort of hovering around the different points.
04:07We've got elements that can change sort of the silhouette of your suit and then elements that are going to
04:12be able to change how they look.
04:14So your helmet, your arms, your legs are all towards the silhouette.
04:20And then we've got things like, oh, in the chest.
04:22And then, of course, your paint, your vinyls and your wear state will all adjust the physical appearance of the
04:28suit.
04:28And then ultra special, very fun animations, which will be for your emotes, your landing and the victory pose.
04:37Awesome. So I think what we're going to try to do today is we'll do the ranger and we'll try
04:44for three appearances.
04:45And so Francis is just going to do his magics and we'll all watch in awe.
04:50Do you want to go to paint first, maybe?
04:51But I think we're going to start with paint, but why don't you take us away, Francis?
04:54Sure thing.
04:55So in the paint options, we have six regions on your exosuit that you can customize.
05:00They are very in-depth region.
05:04It's not just the color like how we've done in the past in our other games.
05:08It is a full material.
05:10So if I go into here, I can pick the main region here and I can apply a physical material
05:16to that.
05:18So I can pick the metal, pick the fabric, pattern fabric.
05:24And so one of the things again here is when you're picking these materials, it's not just the color.
05:30It is the physical material so that affects the reflectance, the smoothness and the color of the material.
05:39And I love the patterns because they can have two colors.
05:45I realize that I forgot to do some disclaimers.
05:49So shame on Ben.
05:51But a couple of disclaimers real quick.
05:53We're going to show you a lot of stuff that's in here.
05:55Not all of it is available at the very beginning.
05:58Some things you unlock through the game in various ways.
06:02We also today don't want to talk about how many things there are, how you unlock them.
06:06Are there things that you pay for?
06:09Are there things that you can earn in game?
06:11That's all a topic for a different time.
06:13We just want to focus on the really cool ways you can customize your appearance.
06:17So I just wanted to make sure that was clear that none of what you see in here is either
06:22the total amount or a subset of the amount.
06:24We're just not really going into that.
06:25We just want to focus on showing you guys a bunch of cool stuff today.
06:30Yep, so what I'm going through here is I'm just kind of resetting the default look of the ranger.
06:36And I am putting in just a blank slate.
06:39Just a white canvas to start with.
06:41So I'm picking some random materials here.
06:47A bit of fabric.
06:49So once you've kind of picked the materials that you like, you can go ahead and start picking the colors.
06:55We have a whole bunch of custom colors here.
06:58Thank you, sir.
07:00Yes, so you can actually make your own color palettes.
07:04As you see, Francis has been trying this feature out quite heavily.
07:08I expect we'll all spend a lot of time doing this.
07:11And you can use sort of any color you want.
07:14The full color wheel is available here.
07:16There's tons of really cool options.
07:18And as you create different colors, they're all saved into this palette so you can use them for later.
07:24Yep, so I'm just kind of presetting some colors that I want to use here for customizing my ranger.
07:34So while you guys are doing this, we also have AJ and Jesse helping us out on our community team,
07:41reading through the chat for questions.
07:43Please just make sure you guys ask questions as we go.
07:47I think the easiest way is if you all ask questions about the section we're in at the time, then
07:52we can answer them as we go instead of trying to wait until the end to do Q&A.
07:55So make sure you ask questions about what you're seeing right now.
07:59We have questions on paint, on materials, and then we can direct them to Francis and Leo.
08:18All right, so what are you trying to aim for here, Francis?
08:21Do you have a vision in mind of what you're trying to achieve?
08:24Yeah, I'm kind of going for a bounty hunter look.
08:29Cool.
08:30I thought you were going to make me the Australian Rugby Union jersey again.
08:34I can do that.
08:36Maybe we can do that a little later.
08:38We can certainly do that.
08:40That's fine.
08:41I know when there's a no out there, Francis.
08:43That's fine.
08:47So one of the nice things is, yeah, once you've picked your colors here, you can go ahead and just
08:52pick any material and the colors will store and they'll save so you don't lose your settings.
08:56You can go back and iterate things on the fly.
09:01Yeah, when you guys were trying to work out the regions, because I think it's interesting we have the six
09:05different regions.
09:06How did you work out, like, how to split up those regions?
09:09So here, just going through the regions from top to bottom, the regions are named in the same way that
09:15the artist had originally built the suit.
09:17So the ranger suits have three hard surfaces and three soft surfaces.
09:23Again, the player can pick whichever region they want, but at least it gives them some guidance as to where
09:29these materials would look best.
09:31So I could go ahead in here and I could make this a metal, although it might look a little
09:36weird that if it's, for example, on the storm cape, it would be a little weird to have a metallic
09:41cape.
09:41But you could go ahead and do that if you want.
09:44I personally feel it looks cool, but as an artist, it might be weird.
09:49A metal cape, but it still flows, am I right?
09:51It does. It's very shiny.
09:54There is nothing wrong with being super shiny.
09:57We have a couple of questions coming through chat that I'll ask you guys.
10:01So can you make custom logos in-game?
10:06No, you cannot currently make custom logos, but you do have the options to do vinyls.
10:14Do we want to go into that now?
10:15I mean, let's hold vinyls.
10:20But yeah, vinyls are effectively what you're asking for.
10:23They're not custom.
10:24We have a whole lot to show you, and Francis will show that off later.
10:27So yeah, the answer is no for now.
10:29Will there be more and more things added once the game is live?
10:33So the answer to that is yes, absolutely.
10:35We're still trying to work out the plan for all of that.
10:39But our goal is to keep adding more and more stuff forever.
10:42As long as we can think of cool things to add, we'll add more stuff to the game.
10:47Final question for one of you guys at the moment that we have.
10:51Will the Legion of Dawn armor have all legs, arms, chest, and head as well?
10:56Yep, so this is probably a good time to go dive into the Legion of Dawn.
11:02Okay, so in here, this is as Leo was mentioning earlier, we have the parts.
11:07So we can go ahead and start equipping pieces of gear.
11:11So for example, I put on the Legion of Dawn arms.
11:15Go through and pick the helmet.
11:16And the player can pick which ones they want to have.
11:24Yes, I think an interesting thing you were explaining in a different meeting, Francis, was how these parts work.
11:33Like it's less about like equipping arms as much as a bunch of attachments that reflect the character model.
11:40Do you want to explain that just a little bit?
11:41Right, so each of the exosuits, like the base suit underneath, the Ranger, the Colossus, the Storm, and the Interceptor,
11:49all have an iconic look, which is their lowest level form.
11:54And then all the part attachments that get added on top, they are topical.
11:58Although you can switch out your helmet.
12:04So you're putting the Legion of Dawn armor pack on, which is available to people that pre-order for the
12:13Ranger.
12:14And if you buy the Legion of Dawn edition, you can get the Legion of Dawn armor packs for all
12:20four javelins available at launch.
12:24So one question, so many people have seen the Legion of Dawn art on the website,
12:31probably not realizing that, hey, like that's the armor pack, but you can also customize it.
12:37Will people be able to make it look exactly like the image on the website?
12:42Yes, so what players will do, what we will do is we will release a set of materials in here
12:48similar to this,
12:49and we will have them named Legion of Dawn, so that way they'll give the players some guidance as to
12:55how to replicate that look.
12:58So they can attach just all the Legion of Dawn materials to the regions, and then just pick the colors
13:02that they want to go with.
13:04It's pretty simple, though. It's silver and gold, you can't go wrong.
13:09It looks amazing, though. People are excited.
13:12A question for you, Leah. Can we save these personalization appearances to loadouts?
13:21Yes, absolutely. So we do have a section where you can store loadouts for all your different javelins,
13:28and edit them, change them as you like, and it will also store all of your gear and customization as
13:33well.
13:34So they'll be the full package for you to build on.
13:39Awesome. I have a bunch more questions coming in.
13:42If you guys have things to say, just stop me and keep talking.
13:45But what are some of the ways you can unlock new colors or materials?
13:52So again, it's a good question. It's one of the things we don't want to get into today.
13:56So we're still working out for all of Vanity and all of our personalization options,
14:02how they're going to be unlocked in the game.
14:04And so we're not really ready to share that yet, but we can share that at a later date.
14:08It's a really good question. Just don't want to talk about any of it right now.
14:13Can you show how to use Legion of Dawn appearances?
14:16Yes, that's what we're doing now. I think I just missed that question earlier.
14:19Apologies.
14:22Can you change the color of any of the unique appearances?
14:27Yes is the answer. So that's kind of what Francis is doing now with the Legion of Dawn armor packs.
14:31He's done a couple of different colors, which is really cool.
14:37And I think certain materials, Francis, they have either just the paint color that you can change,
14:42and then all of our metallics have quite a few different metallic branches.
14:46So metal, with the way our physically-based rendering works is metal has an actual scientific value behind it.
14:54So if we start breaking that value, it tends to look not great in real light,
15:01or at least in the game lighting scenario.
15:03So the regions are contextual.
15:06So if you do pick a metal, for example.
15:09Let's see, I want to go with the welded ones.
15:13I like these ones.
15:15So if you were to pick these metals,
15:17you would get a different color palette range.
15:20So these are all physical real-world metals that exist in real world.
15:24So you have gold, brass, copper, nickel, tin, silver, tungsten.
15:29There's no alien materials.
15:32No, these are all based off real-world metals.
15:36So a question while you're in this screen, I think maybe,
15:39is can you zoom and rotate, like if you want to see more of the character?
15:45Yep.
15:45So you have controls to go ahead and at each level be able to interact with the exosuit.
15:51Awesome.
15:53A question was, will there be a randomized feature for colors?
15:59That's a great idea.
16:01I will take that one back.
16:03Currently, not right now.
16:06But the nice thing is we saw on this, we have preset colors.
16:09So the artists have already pre-selected a wide range of colors.
16:13So people don't have to, every single time, go through the color wheel
16:16and have to pick it for every single material.
16:20And just so people are aware, we've also added white and black values
16:24because I know that a lot of people always ask for black.
16:29That kind of ties into a question I had.
16:31So I remember early on, we were trying to work out how the system would work
16:35to have a lot of depth but also be simple for people like me
16:40who aren't the best with fashion.
16:43and we got to an interesting place where I think it's pretty straightforward
16:47for someone who doesn't want to spend too much time
16:49or isn't necessarily that good at this kind of stuff
16:52in making something look good.
16:54Do you guys want to describe a little bit like if you're a kind of low-key person
16:59who just wants to do something quickly, how do we do that?
17:06So usually when you're in your loadouts...
17:09...
17:13...
17:15So you will always, whenever you create a new loadout, you will get your default ranger.
17:21And it just, oh yeah, I edited it.
17:23Anyway, so, why don't we just go through this.
17:26So as you create loadouts, you can name them whatever you want.
17:30I don't know, Jesse, if you'd be able to...
17:33Give us a name.
17:34Give us a name.
17:40Yeah, and so this is a really, really great way that if you make a couple of things
17:43that you really like, you can swap between them easily.
17:46You know, but you can also just do stuff like, hey, go to all six regions and make them all
17:51black
17:51and that will just look pretty cool by itself.
17:53So you don't have to, like, go through everything and spend lots of time.
17:57Although if you want to, you can really make something that kind of reflects your personal style and flair.
18:03Yeah, I mean, if I've got a whole bunch of friends playing here at work and I just want to
18:08get out,
18:09I'll just grab the default and change up a few colors.
18:12Typically, all metal, very fast while they're waiting for me so that I can play my favorite Bender from Futurama
18:20look.
18:21It's always good.
18:23So no, it's super quick.
18:25You're in and out while everyone's readying up.
18:28And you're also very shiny.
18:31Speaking of shiny, do you want to go into wear a little bit, Ben?
18:34Yeah.
18:35Yeah.
18:36So we do have wear options as well.
18:38So, again, ever since everything is built in a layered fashion,
18:44we kind of built it in a way so that the players can choose how they want their exosuit to
18:49look.
18:49Do they want them to look all beat up?
18:51Do we want them to look dirty?
18:53Do we want them to look all chipped and painted or have chipped paint?
18:57So the players can go ahead and do that or just cover it in grime.
19:04It's a little harder to see here.
19:05So that, let me just switch up the appearances.
19:08Since it is all material based, if you have cloth and you put stains on it,
19:14it'll stain a bit more like cloth versus if you were, if you had an all metal suit,
19:19the wear would make the metal duller.
19:22It would make it cover, the way the surface response of the wear will react differently.
19:32And I should also mention that you can, as we're looking at this,
19:35you can zoom in and out, toggle on and off the little interaction points
19:39if you just want to spend time admiring your suit as well.
19:43There's a few of the options we've added in there,
19:45as well as you can see, not in this screen, but in other ones,
19:48there's lots of options, so we've added filters as well
19:50if you want to quickly get into what you need.
19:54Awesome.
19:55A question came through that I might, we'll see.
20:00The question is, does this only affect your appearance
20:04as opposed to stats with things like the Legion of Dawn armor packs?
20:12Elia, do you want to grab that one?
20:13Or Ben, you want to grab that?
20:15Yeah, I can answer.
20:16So basically there's two big parts of the game.
20:20One is power and one is vanity.
20:22And so what we're talking about now is purely vanity, personalization, appearance,
20:27all kind of synonyms, I guess.
20:28So everything we're doing now only affects how you look.
20:32Separately to that, we have power, which is gears, guns,
20:37and a few other equippable parts that we haven't really delved into yet.
20:41and that's where you get your power and your stats.
20:44So we've really tried to separate that so that, you know,
20:47there's one part of the game that's all about becoming powerful
20:49and then there's a different part of the game
20:51that's about, you know, changing your appearance to be the way you look.
20:55And again, how you unlock all those things,
20:57I don't want to go into today.
20:59But for what we're looking at right now,
21:00it's purely for your appearance.
21:05Another question,
21:06can you apply a paint scheme to multiple javelins?
21:13No, we don't have that ability right now,
21:16but I'm sure as we go into live service,
21:19we can take some of that feedback
21:20and make this even better for you.
21:25But great idea.
21:26Cool.
21:27It is a great idea.
21:28I knew that actually was no,
21:29so I feel good to be awesome.

21:40this is a really, really robust system,
21:42but obviously, like any system in any game,
21:45there's a bunch of things we'd love to do going forward
21:47to improve it.
21:48And so suggestions like that are really helpful for us.
21:51Sometimes they're things we thought about ourselves,
21:53but sometimes they're not.
21:54And so having those suggestions is great.

22:06So I guess that means how many loadouts can you have?

22:50So the vinyls, again,
22:52is to answer that question about the custom logos.
22:54So here we have the vinyls system.
22:57So while we can customize your javelin
23:01and you can apply your materials,
23:02you can pick your colors,
23:04that's all nice,
23:05and you can come up with some really cool designs.
23:07But sometimes you just want a little bit more punch.
23:11maybe a little reward for doing things in the game.
23:14Just something that, in addition,
23:17you personalize your exo
23:18and give you a little bit of flair.
23:22That's what these vinyls are for.
23:23There's a lot of N7 poggers going on in chat.
23:27We might have to show that at some point.
23:29Am I just going to go around that?

23:37And a question, Francis.
23:40These vinyls,
23:42are they javelin-specific?
23:44No.
23:45So the vinyls,
23:46once you have the vinyl,
23:48it'll apply on any javelin you have.
23:52And it should,
23:54within reason,
23:55look as good as it does on one javelin
23:57as it does on another.
23:58You can't always account for every single nook and cranny
24:01on the exo suit,
24:02that this little stripe
24:04might look in the exact same spot,
24:07but it is as close as the artist can possibly get
24:10to making it look good.
24:11Yeah.
24:12Like, the spirit of the decal works across all the suits, right?
24:15Like, I think they look really cool.
24:16I think you have a keener eye for it
24:18than many of us have.
24:22So this is the one you,
24:23this is the one that we made for Ben specifically
24:25for E3,
24:26because he requested it.
24:29I don't know if there are any other Australian rugby fans.
24:32It's inspired by the jersey.
24:34It's obviously not the jersey.
24:35It just uses the same colors,
24:37which is cool.
24:38I think.
24:39This is what I use when I play every day.
24:44I know a question that's come up internally.
24:47I didn't catch it in chat.
24:49I think it might have been there.
24:50It was,
24:51so you can change all the paint options
24:53for all the other stuff we've seen,
24:56but what about the vinyls?
24:58Can you change them at all,
24:59or how does that work?
25:00No.
25:01So we actually did.
25:03We debated this topic for a long time,
25:05and we tried to put full control for the player
25:09to customize each decal or each vinyl.
25:11The problem with that is
25:13the amount of performance expense
25:15that it has on the system
25:16where you're tracking more parameters,
25:19more data,
25:21which did affect performance negatively.
25:24And on top of that,
25:25there was an added complexity,
25:26so you would have to double up
25:28every single one of these menus
25:29so that the player would have to
25:31not only customize their exo,
25:35they would also have to go
25:36personalize their vinyl,
25:38which seemed like an extra bit of work
25:41for very little payoff,
25:43versus the artist just making,
25:44you know,
25:45releasing these cool-looking one-off items,
25:47which also,
25:48it really does help to signify things
25:51like for challenges
25:53to have these iconic-looking vinyls.
25:55So when you see another player
25:57who's done something,
25:58you can see the vinyl
26:00that is associated with it.
26:02Yeah, that's the part I was going to say.
26:04I think, you know,
26:05A, there's all the technical challenges
26:06and the user experience problems with it,
26:09but I think even as a player experience,
26:11to that exact point,
26:12it's great when you can see something
26:14and identify it.
26:15You know, again,
26:17we're not really talking about
26:17how you get things,
26:18but an example might be
26:20you complete a really difficult challenge
26:22and get a cool vinyl,
26:23and then you can use that
26:25to show off to your friends
26:26that you got it.
26:27And if they can look at that
26:28and immediately relate
26:29that that's where it came from
26:30and that's what it is,
26:31I think that's a really cool
26:32way to show off,
26:34even if it's a little humble brag.
26:37So the chat is demanding,

36:27so weapons do not
36:29receive colorization in
36:32the same way as the
36:33exosuit.
36:33Weapons will be
36:34they will have unique
36:35looks and appearances
36:36there will probably
36:37probably be another
36:38stream going over
36:40that so you can have
36:41really cool looking
36:42guns.
36:44Yep and kind of
36:45same with gear like
36:46there are some
36:48variations to how
36:49the gear looks but
36:51that's based on the
36:52functionality of the
36:53gear and so it's not
36:55tied to things that
36:56you can specifically
36:58customize but you
37:00can tie them together
37:01in loadout so you
37:02can pick hey I want
37:04these three gear
37:04pieces these two
37:05weapons with this
37:07appearance and I
37:08save the whole thing
37:09as one loadout so
37:11you know you might
37:12want to make the red
37:14dragon ranger
37:16appearance that's all
37:17red and then you
37:19have equip fire gear
37:20and and then you
37:21might want to make
37:22the frosty warrior
37:24I wish I was more
37:25creative and you
37:27know you make
37:28yourself blue and
37:30then you equip the
37:30frost grenade and
37:31save that as a loadout
37:32and you can then swap
37:33between both the
37:35customization you have
37:36of gear and weapons
37:37and the appearance
37:38can be tied together
37:40so that's pretty cool.
