00:00We're getting some truly shocking details from the tragic crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport
00:04that left two pilots dead and 41 others hospitalized. The two victims who died in
00:10the crash are pilot Antoine Forrest and his co-pilot Mackenzie Gunther. Now, they worked
00:14for Jazz Aviation LP, which was operating the Air Canada Express flight from Montreal.
00:19The video of this thing is just wow. If you haven't seen it, you literally have to brace
00:25yourself when you watch it. The crash was so violent, one flight attendant who was in
00:29her jump seat was ejected from the plane and was still strapped to it when first responders
00:35found her. Now, if you're watching this on YouTube, I'm going to show you some of that
00:39harrowing video. Seriously, it is hard to watch, so if you don't want to see it, skip ahead
00:4415 seconds. The video shows the Air Canada jet plowing at high speed directly into a fire
00:51engine that was trying to cross in front of it. The fire truck gets obliterated, tumbling
00:55under the front of the plane. The aftermath shows the front of the jet, and it's just
01:00a mangled mess of steel, completely unrecognizable. Now, listen to this audio from the moment of
01:07the collision. An air traffic controller tried to stop the fire truck, which had been cleared
01:11to cross the runway.
01:12Truck 1 and company crossing 4 at Delta. Frontier 4195, just stop there, please.
01:19Stop, stop, stop, stop. Truck 1, stop, stop, stop. Stop, truck 1, stop. Stop, truck 1, stop.
01:27Delta 2603, go around, runway heading 2000. Jet 646. Jet 646, I see you collide with vehicle
01:35agents, hold position. I know you can't move. Vehicles are responding to you now. Frontier 4195,
01:40I got the word that we're going to be close for a little while. If you want to prepare to
01:43return
01:44to the ramp, let me know. Yeah, we got stuff in progress for that, man. That wasn't good to watch.
01:50Yeah, I know I was here. I tried to reach out to my stuff, and we were dealing with an
01:53emergency
01:53earlier, and I messed up. No, man, you did the best you could. One expert with decades of air traffic
01:59control experience told us he thinks the controller, quote, went brain dead for a minute. Now, questions
02:05about the state of air traffic controllers followed swiftly. Remember, we're in the middle of a
02:10government shutdown that is having an outsized impact on air travel. On Monday, the FAA confirmed
02:15that air traffic controllers are getting paid right now and that the hiring of more controllers is
02:20ongoing. The National Transportation Safety Board briefed the press Monday night but was short on
02:25answers, at least in part because some staff is having a hard time getting to the crash site.
02:30An air traffic control specialist spent three hours in a TSA line in Houston and had still not
02:36arrived as of Monday evening. Which brings me to the ongoing travel chaos across the country.
02:41Even before the crash at LaGuardia forced the closure of the airport, snarling flights around the
02:46country, traveling was already a nightmare thanks to TSA shortages. Monday marked the start of ICE's
02:51deployment to try and get those lines a little bit shorter. I asked the Post's Deputy Managing
02:56Editor Michael Zennie how the first day went. So ICE agents deployed to several major airports
03:02on Monday. But from what we could tell, it looks like they were not doing any of the screening
03:09or any of the sort of hard work that the TSA agents actually do themselves. We saw a lot of
03:17photos and
03:18videos of ICE agents staying around, assisting with lines and other ancillary security, and also
03:24collecting a lot of scorn from the flying public. We saw people screaming ICE out, photographers
03:31following ICE agents around airports, and, you know, people sort of just generally being very hostile
03:39to ICE agents who have become, you know, very divisive following the big immigration raids, especially
03:47in Minneapolis.
03:49President Trump was asked about ICE's work at the airports Monday and had this to say.
03:54I want to thank ICE because they stepped in so, so strongly. They'll do great. And if that's not
04:01enough, I'll bring in the National Guard. We're not going to have the Democrats destroy our country.
04:06And if the president has his way, it may be quite some time before things get back to normal for
04:10the
04:11TSA. Michael Zennie explains.
04:13President Trump has waded into the debate
04:15over funding the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA. And he suggested that actually he
04:22doesn't even want a bill that would fund these agencies if it does not also include this bill
04:28that he's pushing very, very hard, which is the Save America Act, which would require proof of
04:34citizenship and voter ID at polls to vote, as well as several other requirements that he's pushing that
04:45he says will help better secure the election. Democrats, of course, and even some members,
04:50some Republicans in the Senate are very, very opposed to that particular act.
04:55And it seems like that's going to be even thornier to get through than the current impasse
05:02that Congress is on with regards to funding TSA and other other Department of Homeland Security
05:11priorities. Now to the latest on the Iran war and the confusion over whether or not peace talks are
05:17happening. President Trump announced Monday that the U.S. would temporarily not attack any part of
05:22Iran's power and energy infrastructure. This was something Trump had directly threatened,
05:27originally setting a Monday deadline before those attacks would happen. This newly promised pause,
05:32which will last for five days, came after what he called, quote, very good and productive talks.
05:37But after the president posted that update, which led to a pop in the stock market and cheaper oil
05:42prices, Iran refuted it. The country's foreign ministry released a statement that reads in part,
05:47quote, remarks by the U.S. president are part of efforts to reduce energy prices and buy time to
05:52implement his military plans. While there have been initiatives by regional countries to deescalate
05:57tensions, Iran's response has been clear. It did not start the war and all such requests should be
06:02directed to Washington. Now the president addressed that response later in the day. Well, they're going
06:07to have to get themselves a better public relations. We have that very, very strong talks. We'll see
06:14where they lead. We have point, major points of agreement. I would say almost all points of
06:20agreement. Perhaps that has to be conveyed. The communication, as you know, has been blown to
06:25pieces. They're unable to talk to each other. But we've had very strong talks. Mr. Witkopf and
06:31Mr. Krishna had them. They went, I would say, perfectly. I would say that if they carried through
06:41with that, it'll end that problem, that conflict. Before we take our quick break, help us feed that
