00:01What if 99% of humanity disappeared?
00:04First off, we're talking about a massive reduction in people,
00:08leaving only 80 million humans on the entire planet.
00:11But hey, don't panic just yet.
00:13Let's see how this wild ride would unfold.
00:17Imagine bustling cities turned into ghost towns,
00:20empty highways, and quiet neighborhoods.
00:23It'd be like a never-ending vacation for those left behind.
00:26Of course, there'd be some challenges to tackle,
00:28like whoops, untended gas mains causing fires,
00:32and those abandoned chemical storage facilities and industrial plants might create some pollution.
00:38Oh, and let's not forget about abandoned nuclear power plants.
00:42Wild animals would be more free,
00:44and poor domestic cattle and sheep would struggle in cold northern climates.
00:49To make things worse, stored gasoline wouldn't last long because it's not so great at staying stable.
00:55Let's get to the silver lining.
00:56With only 80 million people, there would be plenty of resources.
01:02Organizing and salvaging whatever's left would be totally doable,
01:06especially in smaller countries like Belgium.
01:09They'd probably have a,
01:11hey, we got this attitude.
01:13They'd have just around 120,000 folks left all within a couple of hours' drive from each other.
01:19That is, of course, if this remaining 1% of the world's population is scattered around the planet
01:25equally based on countries' populations before this event happened.
01:29In this case, pretty much every nation would face a similar situation.
01:33Imagine South Korea with half a million people,
01:36mostly hanging out together.
01:37Brazil would have 2 million inhabitants chilling out along the Atlantic coast.
01:43Hopefully, unlike those movies where post-apocalyptic gangs go mad,
01:49the survivors would try to stick together in their old communities.
01:52These resourceful fellas would band together in new family and village communities,
01:57and they'd have the knowledge and skills to handle any troublemakers.
02:01Remember, we're social creatures,
02:02and we'd want to stick together to face the unknown.
02:05Well, at least we wouldn't have to start from scratch here.
02:08We'd have a major advantage.
02:10All the knowledge accumulated by humanity would still be with us.
02:13If we had electricity and internet available, we would be okay.
02:18So, would we re-industrialize?
02:21Yeah, we would.
02:22We'd have tools and machines still lying around, giving us a head start.
02:26Sure, renewable energy might be tricky at first,
02:28and we might have to rely on fossil fuels like coal,
02:31but we're resourceful, and we'd find a way to make it work.
02:35Plus, we'd have some brilliant minds with critical skills who'd step up to the challenge.
02:40This type of stuff kind of happened in real life.
02:43Think of the historical collapse events.
02:45They made an epic comeback that spanned centuries.
02:48Back in the 14th century, a plague struck and claimed the lives of up to half of all Europeans.
02:53The Middle East was also impacted, with around a tenth of the global population succumbing to the disease.
03:00Surprisingly, this devastating event had little negative impact on Europe's technological and economic progress.
03:06And two centuries later, the population eventually rebounded to how it was before.
03:12Two other instances of collapse are that of Rome and the Bronze Age.
03:17Both brought down impressive civilizations that had enjoyed technological advancements,
03:22and economic prosperity, and engaged in international trade.
03:27The Bronze Age collapse occurred between 1200 and 1150 BCE,
03:33leading to the fall of Mycenaean, Mycenaean, Greece, and Hittite, Hittite civilizations,
03:39and the weakening of Egyptian and Assyrian civilizations.
03:43To this day, historians remain uncertain about the exact reasons behind this collapse.
03:48Rome, once boasting over a million inhabitants and serving as the seat of the Western Roman Empire for centuries,
03:56faced a dramatic decline in the 5th century.
03:58Within a few decades, the entire empire collapsed.
04:02It took until the 1930s for Rome to surpass its previous peak population.
04:08Fortunately, there are no historical examples of collapse events that resulted in more than 20% of the global population's
04:15demise.
04:16Many aspects of our physical infrastructure, such as machines, tools, and buildings,
04:21would still be intact and usable, placing us in a far better position than in 2500 BCE.
04:28The remaining 80 million survivors would have access to the wealth of knowledge accumulated by humanity.
04:34Moreover, some individuals might hold critical professions like engineers or chemists.
04:39It's quite likely that some people would have agricultural knowledge, helping feed the population.
04:44Okay, but let's make this scenario more personal.
04:48If you woke up one day to find 99% of the population missing,
04:52it would undoubtedly be an overwhelming and surreal experience.
04:56Survival would become your immediate priority,
04:59and your actions would largely depend on the resources and skills available to you.
05:04Here's what you would probably do.
05:07You'd take a moment to comprehend what's happened.
05:09This sudden disappearance of people would be shocking and confusing.
05:14Your friends and family would most probably be gone, too, like it happened in Avengers.
05:19Your primary focus would be securing essential survival items,
05:23such as food, water, shelter, and medical supplies.
05:27You'd need to visit nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, and warehouses
05:32to gather provisions that could last for an extended period.
05:35Then you'd need to find other survivors.
05:38I mean, many people now lack essential skills like growing food, purifying water, or self-defense.
05:46You'd need to start learning them if there was no internet and no YouTube tutorials to rely on.
05:52Well, libraries, museums, and educational institutions have tons of information about the world and its history.
05:59Once you've formed a community, you and your fellas would have to protect it like there's no tomorrow.
06:04Um, you might feel like there isn't one at that point anyway.
06:08While most technology might still work initially,
06:11you'd need to ensure the protection of power sources.
06:14To do that, you'd have to be very cautious.
06:17The world would be in turmoil,
06:19so you'd need to remain vigilant and cautious of potential dangers.
06:23Without proper law enforcement and governance,
06:25there could be risks from wild animals, natural disasters,
06:28or even other survivors who might be hostile.
06:31Now let's explore the best and worst-case scenarios.
06:35The sudden disappearance of so many people would create widespread chaos,
06:39leading to mass accidents and damage.
06:41With the absence of healthcare professionals and medical supplies,
06:45diseases could spread, leading to health crises,
06:48food production and distribution systems would collapse,
06:51and food shortages and famine could become a real possibility.
06:54Looting and violence could occur since desperate people would search for resources and try to survive.
06:59The best-case scenario is that after all this chaos,
07:04survivors would eventually come together to support one another and form resilient communities.
07:09The world would have significantly fewer carbon emissions,
07:12leading to a positive impact on the environment.
07:14With a small population, resources like food and water might be more abundant and sustainable in the long run.
07:22Without the constraints of a highly populated world,
07:25people could focus on individual passions, arts, and creativity.
07:30With advanced technology still available,
07:32survivors might start working on preserving knowledge and advancing scientific research.
07:37But overall, the world would change drastically and the future would be uncertain.
07:44Your actions and the actions of other survivors would play a crucial role in shaping the new world and determining
07:49its trajectory.
07:51Feeling like a fishing pro?
07:53So, head to the nearest water body and try your luck at reeling in some aquatic treats.
07:58Now, here's an idea.
07:59Become a Green Thumb Superstar.
08:01Plant those seeds, nurture your crops, and watch your mini-farm flourish.
08:06Farm-to-table cuisine anyone?
08:08And how about those furry friends?
08:10If you spot any wandering pets, befriend them,
08:13and you've got yourself some loyal companions.
08:16Now, take a deep breath, chin up, and embrace your inner survival guru.
08:21Remember, this might be a wild ride,
08:24but you've got the spirit and the skills to thrive in this post-apocalyptic feast of life.
08:28So, go out there.
08:33Now, get a load of this.
08:34A red whirlwind sweeps along the coast of Australia and heads toward the nearest city.
08:40This tornado is unique, not by its color, but by what is hidden inside it.
08:45These are great white sharks, hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, and bull sharks.
08:50Shark!
08:50They fly inside the hurricane, snapping their jaws and trying to grab a piece of meat.
08:56People who look at this bizarre phenomenon from the outside think that they've got something in their drinks.
09:01But this is reality.
09:03A shark tornado can really exist?
09:06Or not?
09:07Yeah, let's find out.
09:09In 1877, a rather unusual tornado struck a farm in Southern California.
09:15About six small alligators, about one foot in length, fell from the sky that day.
09:20In 1894, a tornado traveled through England and dropped poisonous jellyfish on people.
09:26There's a version that tadpoles instead of jellyfish fell on the ground that day, but it still sounds quite strange.
09:33In Kentucky, in 1876, there was a black humor rain.
09:38Hmm, doesn't sound funny to me.
09:40Pieces of meat fell from the sky.
09:43The locals tasted them and said it was like mutton or venison.
09:47However, later, birds discovered that a flock of buzzards had flown over that area.
09:53The birds felt unwell and regurgitated their lunch right in the air.
09:57And then, I assume, so did the locals who tried it.
10:00In 1947, fish fell from the sky in Marksville, Louisiana.
10:05In 2005, there was a rain that contained thousands of frogs in Serbia.
10:11In 2010, a small town in Australia was hit by a rain of perches.
10:16You know, fish.
10:17And now, imagine that all these strange phenomenon were caused by one villainous corporation
10:23where evil geniuses work.
10:25And one of them is you.
10:26So, you decide to make the most incredible natural cataclysm in history.
10:31A tornado of sharks.
10:33Or sharknado.
10:35It seems like it's impossible, but you're going to try.
10:38Because you have nothing better to do.
10:40So first, we need to understand what a water spout is.
10:44It's a column of rotating air filled with clouds.
10:47This vortex occurs during a thunderstorm when warm air releases a large amount of heat.
10:53This heat becomes the energy that moves the rising air currents.
10:57This warm, moist air goes up and cold, dry air descends.
11:02The difference in temperatures preserves instability and helps tornadoes develop.
11:07When it forms over the water, a tornado becomes a water spout.
11:11It can draw in particles of seawater, some objects, and even fish.
11:15But everything depends on the strength of this vortex.
11:19You've probably seen it when tornadoes lifted cars into the air or tore the roofs off of buildings.
11:25There's a video on the internet where a tornado raises cows into the air.
11:30And an ordinary cow weighs about 1,400 pounds.
11:34Now, in comparison, the great white shark is about 4,400 pounds.
11:39If a tornado could lift several cows, it could cope with a shark.
11:43But besides the great white one, there are tiger sharks, bull sharks, and hammerhead sharks.
11:49All of them weigh less.
11:51Therefore, there's no doubt that a tornado could possibly lift them into the air, too.
11:57Okay, now we can assume it's in the realm of possibilities.
12:00The next step is to create a real tornado.
12:04To do this, you need to heat the air and then make it rotate.
12:07The cold air will start to go down, and you will get a whirlwind.
12:12One engineer from Canada named Lewis built devices that created tornadoes.
12:16He made several prototypes before assembling a real vortex engine.
12:20According to him, anyone can do it.
12:23However, these vortices were small.
12:26His device created thin jets of air that swirled and produced mini-tornadoes,
12:31which then quickly dissipated due to strong winds.
12:34Lewis started developing this idea to get a new source of electricity.
12:38But he needed to create a giant vortex that would go into the sky to power several houses.
12:44He didn't have enough finances and opportunities to do this.
12:48But the place where you work has enough money to do it.
12:51You take the concept of the vortex engine and invest several million dollars.
12:55You build several large turbines that direct air to one point and then heat it with the help of a
13:01powerful generator.
13:03To give your tornado more destructive power, you electrify the atmosphere.
13:07You can control the tornado and change its direction using a special control panel.
13:12You little evil mad scientist, you.
13:15So, you come to the coast of Australia, where there are many sharks of different species.
13:21To force them to gather in one place, you must throw several tons of minced meat into the water near
13:26the shore.
13:27Let me suggest that you don't do this by hand.
13:30The sharks immediately come there as soon as they smell the food.
13:34But there's a problem.
13:35These animals feel changes in the weather and don't approach the center of the storm.
13:41Therefore, to make sharks take risks, you need to make them angry and hungry enough.
13:46You go, Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
13:49You spend millions of dollars to organize large-scale fishing.
13:53You throw huge nets into the water.
13:55And within a week, catch all the fish, shellfish, and other marine life that can become dinner for sharks.
14:02You move all the prey into giant aquariums and wait for the sharks to get hungry.
14:08A few days later, you notice many big fish congregating near the shore, looking for food.
14:14Then, you buy a couple of tons of ground beef from several butcher shops.
14:19You put it in a large container and lift it with the help of a helicopter.
14:23You dump the meat in a place where you see a lot of sharks.
14:27Lunch attracts fish within a one-mile radius.
14:30At this moment, a large ship with the tornado generator approaches the shore.
14:35Hey, can't quit now, right?
14:37You start the engines, and strong flows of warm air accumulate in the sky.
14:42Electricity flashes, and condensation greets rain.
14:46A powerful vortex begins to form in the sky.
14:49You control it and direct it towards the sharks.
14:52The whirlwind pulls pieces of ground beef from the water.
14:55The dust particles mix with the meat, and the tornado turns red.
15:00Oh, I think I'm gonna barf.
15:03You increase the strength of the wind and see how the sharks begin to rise into the air.
15:08More precisely, they jump out of the water to grab the meat, and the tornado picks them up.
15:14When several sharks are inside the vortex, you direct them toward the shore.
15:18People are running in horror.
15:20Some sharks fall back into the water, and some fall to the beach.
15:25The hammerhead shark falls right into the kitchen of a coastal restaurant and eats the whole menu.
15:30The shark is also a pig.
15:32You direct the sharknado into the city.
15:35The storm lifts trees and cars into the air and rips off the roofs of houses.
15:40Some sharks fall down to the streets.
15:42People are running in different directions.
15:44The shark vortex passes through the city, scattering sharks.
15:48Of course, sharks don't crawl on the ground and don't try to eat people.
15:52They're just in shock and don't understand what's going on.
15:55Hey, what can I say?
15:57It's a PG sharknado.
15:59Even in the ocean, sharks don't like to bite people.
16:02All attacks occur because sharks mistake them for seals or other sea creatures, which all look like food.
16:08Also, toothy fish can swim up to people out of curiosity.
16:12And now, they're disoriented and having big breathing problems.
16:16Fish need a constant flow of water passing through their oxygen-extracting gills.
16:21Depending on the species, sharks can last without water for several minutes to an hour.
16:26At this moment, you realize that you have carried out not a villainous plan,
16:31but a stupid thing that has caused so many fish to suffer.
16:34Now, you need to fix everything.
16:36You have several helicopters that can transport the fish back into the ocean.
16:40But they're twitching and snapping their jaws in fear.
16:44Therefore, to calm them down, you use darts with sedatives.
16:48Then, you help rescuers to fasten the sharks to the helicopters and lift them into the air.
16:54You have to get one fish out of an apartment on the seventh floor.
16:57Another shark was lying in the park.
17:00A hammerhead caused a big traffic jam on the road.
17:03And this tiger shark fell on a fire truck.
17:07Fortunately, they all have tough skin and strong muscles that protect them from damage.
17:12You pick up all the sharks and move them back to the ocean.
17:15No one and nothing has been hurt except for one thing.
17:19Your reputation.
17:20You have failed your villainous plan and need to develop something new.
17:25This time, you'll create something that will really terrify people.
17:29You will invent a YouTube channel with nothing but ads.
17:34Alternate ending.
17:35You will invent a mega flood of spiders.
17:39And now for some breaking news.
17:41All snakes have suddenly disappeared.
17:44If you saw this on the news, what do you think would happen?
17:48Well, Voldemort certainly wouldn't be pleased to hear this.
17:52And neither would other Slytherin members.
17:55Hogwarts would have three houses instead of four.
17:58Or, Parseltongue, which is the language of serpents, would become useless.
18:04Okay, Potterheads.
18:06Let's get back to our muggle world.
18:08How would it affect us?
18:10Well, let's look at the bright side first.
18:13People with Ophidiophobia, which is the fear of snakes, would be so relieved.
18:18We can all agree that snakes aren't exactly everyone's favorite animal.
18:24Some snakes are venomous.
18:26And this doesn't help save their reputation.
18:29It's often overlooked that these animals usually prefer to retreat when you encounter them.
18:35They can become defensive if threatened.
18:37But when left alone, they don't want to mess with you.
18:41Try telling this to people with a phobia, though.
18:44Now they can enjoy outdoor activities, such as mountain climbing, like everyone else.
18:49And yet, they would have other worries in the absence of these serpents.
18:56The design of the ecosystem works like a clock.
19:00Every species has an important role.
19:03If one goes down, the others will be affected.
19:06Snakes are no exception to this order.
19:09They primarily snack on mice or rats.
19:12They help to control rodent and other small mammal populations.
19:17This is important in terms of preventing the spread of diseases, too.
19:22Think about the spread of the plague of medieval times.
19:26Driving out all reptiles could cause a similar problem.
19:30Did you know that the bubonic plague was never completely gone?
19:34It's been spotted in modern times, too.
19:37For instance, in Madagascar in 2008.
19:40So it's good to have some snakes around to protect us from disease outbreaks.
19:46You see, snakes are excellent hunters.
19:50They ambush their prey by using their highly developed senses to find and track their potential dinner.
19:57They're super mobile, can squeeze through cracks, climb on rock walls, and swim.
20:02They can even fly.
20:04Well, sort of.
20:05Flying snakes can't actually gain altitude, but they can glide.
20:11They use the speed of free fall and contortions of their bodies to follow air flows and lift themselves.
20:18Yeah, they can catch their prey in numerous ways.
20:22If we imagine a world without them, it will lead us to another phobia.
20:29Allow me to introduce you to musaphobia.
20:33It's the fear of mice and rats.
20:35People with this phobia will have a hard time with all those rats wandering around since there are no snakes
20:42to eat them.
20:43Not to mention that a single pair of rats can have a million descendants in over a year.
20:48Say hello to crop damage.
20:50An overpopulation of rodents can lead to a shortage of food and competition for resources.
20:57Do I feel the Hunger Games vibes?
21:00Oh, and mice wouldn't be our only problem.
21:03You can add insects to the list, too.
21:06Again, without snakes, they'll throw a party in the streets.
21:11Reptiles also play an important role in the natural environment and food webs as prey.
21:18Mongooses, eagles, and hawks would really miss snakes.
21:23Eventually, some populations of large mammals would decline, and this could lead to the extinction of some species.
21:31Then, there's medicine.
21:34Scientists and researchers would miss these creatures.
21:36Snake venom is the key to the development of certain medicines.
21:41For example, some diabetes and heart disease medicines have been derived from snake venom.
21:47Patients who need them will get affected, too.
21:53When we mention snakes and medicine, there's something else that comes to mind.
21:58Botox.
21:59Is it really snake venom?
22:01Nope.
22:02Snake venom used in skin care isn't obtained from the animal itself.
22:06It turns out that this ingredient is called Sn-Ake.
22:11It's a human-made ingredient designed to mimic the effects of Temple Viper's snake venom.
22:18Now let's picture what life would really look like without snakes.
22:22I'm starting with day one.
22:25People don't immediately notice the absence of these creatures.
22:28So, in the first few days, especially in cities, people would have no clue that all snakes are gone.
22:35Workers in zoos could start to panic.
22:39You would see some news about snakes missing from zoos.
22:42Then, people in zoo administrations would go through CCTV footage.
22:47They would be shocked to see that snakes disappeared into thin air.
22:53After the spread of this news, authorities would probably open special departments to see if they have any snakes left
22:59in their country.
23:00Then, it would turn into a worldwide issue.
23:04Some sort of a global alliance would be established to investigate what happened to these reptiles and what could be
23:10done about it.
23:12By the time authorities and people understood the severity of the situation, ecosystems would already start to change.
23:19People who live in urban environments may not be directly affected in the first few months.
23:24Then, they would see more mice in their houses and in the streets.
23:29Around 500,000 mice live in the network of tunnels of the London Underground, for example.
23:35The number may vary, but many rodents live in large cities.
23:39These animals would become more visible.
23:42You'd open a kitchen cabinet and, oops, you'd see a mouse looking at you from behind a jar of peanut
23:48butter.
23:52New career opportunities would arise, since the demand to live in a mouse-free environment would skyrocket.
23:59Authorities might introduce new taxes to raise money to handle this new situation.
24:04After all, they would need to provide people with safe places to live.
24:09Of course, it would be not only urban places that would be affected by the absence of snakes.
24:14The countryside would have even more problems.
24:17Without snakes, the number of pests would increase.
24:21These animals would start destroying crops and habitats of other animals, and farmers would be in serious trouble.
24:29Authorities would need to support people living there and find ways to protect the environment,
24:34which would be their top priority.
24:37Researchers and scientists would have to take a huge responsibility.
24:41Maybe they'd create artificial snakes that could be nutritious, like real snakes,
24:46so that animals like eagles would hunt them and continue to live.
24:52What artificial snakes would look like is a mystery.
24:55I can't imagine them.
24:57I'll just leave it to you.
24:59If we flashed forward to five years from the first day of the world without snakes,
25:04we would face an entirely different world.
25:08Maybe we would have a special day for it.
25:11The fifth anniversary of the world without snakes.
25:14The changes would be obvious, but by that time, people would have probably got used to living in that different
25:20world.
25:22Some restaurants would have already made changes to their menus.
25:26Goodbye to snake soup.
25:29Then there would be new museums dedicated to snakes.
25:33You'd be able to read about the story of their evolution and see their fossils.
25:38Maybe you'd stop by the museum souvenir shop to buy a snake-shaped pen for your friend.
25:47Lastly, we would still be looking for alternatives to snake venom in the field of medicine.
25:52I mean, it's a relief for people who show allergic reactions to snake bites,
25:57but these animals are crucial for some studies and medicines.
26:01So, researchers would still be busy trying to find alternatives that could replace snake venom.
26:08If we went 200 years ahead in time, we would see a world where people have fully accepted that snakes
26:14are gone for good.
26:16So much so that younger people would only know that there was an animal named a snake that once lived
26:22on this planet.
26:24They would get to know this animal from history books and videos.
26:28Coloring books would have a cat or a dog, but not a snake.
26:31Mythical creatures like Medusa and Shyamaran would become even more mystical and interesting.
26:39Oh, and we wouldn't compare a sneaky person to a snake anymore.
26:43There would be a new definition for them.
26:47We've survived the Ice Age, meteorites, and many other challenges,
26:51so we'll probably figure something out.
26:55Fingers crossed that this scenario never gets real, though.
26:59Do you have any other version of how events could unfold in a snake-less world?
27:04That's it for today.
27:05So hey, if you pacified your curiosity, then give the video a like and share it with your friends.
27:10Or if you want more, just click on these videos and stay on the bright side.
27:14All right.
