00:00Well, just tons to unpack from the league, but obviously the Lions.
00:05You'll always take a W, but yeah, we're going to talk about the game.
00:09If you're in the win is a win crowd, cool.
00:12Let me turn on some Peppa Pig for you, and you can go sit with the kids.
00:15We're going to talk football.
00:16That was pretty gnarly yesterday.
00:18Blown a 21-point lead.
00:20You got your running back on a 578-touch pace,
00:25and you let the Saints get to a position in this game
00:28where they went for two to beat you, which, by the way,
00:30I love the call by Kellen Moore.
00:33You're not playing for a tie in week one.
00:35You were down 21-0.
00:36You're on the road.
00:37You run your best play.
00:38Did I like their play selection?
00:39No.
00:40I did not like the play.
00:41I liked the play before the Lions called a tie.
00:44I don't like, okay, the bunch formation, give you options.
00:47When you're doing reverse motion like that,
00:50you're keying on where the ball is going,
00:51and the Lions were adept at reading it and taking it out
00:54because then there was nowhere to go.
00:56I don't like plays that leave you with one option.
00:59Look, that's just me.
01:00Who the hell am I?
01:01But overall, look, Lions did a nice job in the last play,
01:05but I'm not going to celebrate what I watched
01:07because that secondary allowed, I don't know what to call Tyler Shuck.
01:12I can't call him a good quarterback.
01:13I can't say he's terrible, but thank God the Saints MO
01:17under Kellen Moore has been starting slow all last year into this.
01:21But, man, when they kicked it in, 400 yards passing.
01:25Are you kidding me?
01:26In a situation where you should have been able to pin your ears back?
01:29Yeah.
01:30That's not good enough.
01:31I would put Tyler Shuck in the scratch-off category.
01:35Sure.
01:36Maybe he's a winner.
01:37You don't know.
01:38Let's go to a winner.
01:39Okay.
01:39One of my favorite people.
01:40We go to Dre in Southfield, a noted show legend.
01:43Dre, how are you, sir?
01:45What's up, guys?
01:45How you doing?
01:46Excellent, Dre.
01:48You know, I think that the practical way to go about it as a Lions fan is
01:55you have to, for one, of course, we appreciate the win.
01:58You know, we need X amount to get into the playoffs.
02:01But in terms of how you look at our team,
02:03we have to all keep in mind what the goal here is,
02:06and that is to win a Super Bowl or get to one.
02:09So when we're looking at our team on a week-by-week basis,
02:12it's like how close are we to get into that goal?
02:15It can't just be that we win.
02:17And I don't want to overreact to week one, particularly offensively.
02:21I'm going to give it a few more weeks before I pass judgment, you know,
02:24just to see how does Goff and Petzl get in better rhythm.
02:29He gets more fulfilled for these guys.
02:30This is real football.
02:31You know, they didn't do any preseason.
02:32They didn't do any scrimmages.
02:34So this is a lot of fire, right?
02:36And so I expect there to be some clunkiness.
02:39The whole Gibbs usage rate, I think it will be irresponsible
02:43if they continue to do it the way they are,
02:45which I don't think they're going to necessarily.
02:47However, they don't really have a reliable second option right now.
02:51So how are they going to do that in a good way?
02:53I don't know.
02:55I don't know either because they just don't.
02:59I mean, look, Brad Holmes' affinity for signing injured players strikes again.
03:05Isaiah Pacheco had huge red flags.
03:07You still signed him.
03:08He's hurt.
03:09And you brought in Kareem Hunt.
03:11You didn't sign him.
03:13So I just, Dre, you know what I know.
03:15There's no world they could keep up that pace.
03:18No, no.
03:19And I don't believe they will.
03:21Dan has a pretty good feel for his players.
03:23I have to believe they'll do something.
03:25But we'll see.
03:26You know, one thing Brad has shown is that he is stubborn in his ways.
03:31Now, defensively, there were some things I was encouraged to see.
03:36I thought his stat, it won't show on the stat sheet, but I watched Lee McNeil really closely.
03:40I actually thought he played a really good game.
03:42He was disruptive in the inside.
03:44I thought the whole D-line did a great job taking away the running game.
03:48Yeah.
03:48And I thought they were good enough rushing the passer with some blitz support.
03:52No, I thought the D-line played well.
03:54Yeah.
03:55Yeah.
03:55Now, the one reservation I have about Kevin Shepard, remember something, guys.
03:59Because this time last year, maybe three or four weeks into the season, he did so well with the defense.
04:04He was being mentioned in, oh, the next hothead coach candidate.
04:08And what happened in the latter half of the season was that teams adjusted to what he would do going
04:13into games.
04:14And he didn't really seem to have a counter to it.
04:16The one, I won't say red flag, but yellow flag that I saw yesterday was, okay, year one to year
04:24two as a D.C.
04:25I know you do a good job game planning for teams, but what do you do in the midst of
04:31a game once they figure you out?
04:32The adjustment.
04:34Yes.
04:34And so far, I would give him a non-passing grade in that aspect week one.
04:41Hell of a game plan going in.
04:43Tyler Shuck and Kellen Moore, they were totally out of source.
04:47And I know you said they tend to start slow, but I'm going to give Kevin Shepard credit for that.
04:51Oh, 100%.
04:51They had a great defensive game plan.
04:52Sorry, don't take it that I'm not giving him credit.
04:54I was making a point.
04:55Like, factually, they only scored 39 points in the first quarter all last season.
05:00So it's been a bugaboo for Kellen Moore.
05:03But no, Shepard and staff deserve credit.
05:05They contributed to that.
05:07Yeah, but they had to be able to adjust.
05:09And that was kind of alarming.
05:11I'm like, clearly, especially when they kept bringing McCreary to let Nicole off the edge,
05:15like, they did that again, you know, and it wasn't working.
05:19And so, like, I'm just, I need to see Kevin get to that next level.
05:22All right, man.
05:23You know, like, I have pretty good confidence against the Bills.
05:26Not saying we're going to beat them.
05:27Whatever game plan Shep has for the defense, I feel sound going into the game.
05:32The question would be when Joe Brady and Josh Allen, depending on how long it takes them to figure it
05:37out,
05:37will he be able to counterpunch?
05:39Because, quite frankly, with the player level abilities we have on defense, we need high level coaching.
05:45We don't have enough studs to say, you know what, base defense, go eat.
05:50You know, we're just not that good.
05:52And, Mike, lastly, part of it is the emotional part of me as a fan, you know,
05:58I don't hate him personally, but it's really hard for me to get Ben Johnson credit.
06:02But he is a genius.
06:05Dre, that was a major step.
06:07Congratulations.
06:08It hurts.
06:08It hurts, you know, because, you know, and it's not because he's gone.
06:12It's because he's with a rival.
06:14And it's like, jeez, man, you know, and they are a problem, not going to be a problem.
06:20And now they've got their own issues now.
06:22Their defense is suspect.
06:23Oh, look, I think right now here's where you put the Bears, okay?
06:28It has a very Mike Martz, Rams, greatest show on turf vibe.
06:34You know what I'm saying?
06:36They know.
06:36They know who they are.
06:37They are going to try to boat race you and defensively get one or two stops or one or two
06:43turnovers.
06:44No, I think they know who they are.
06:47Look, it's just the difference is here, Ben Johnson was able to revive Jared Goff's career to become a really
06:56high-level game manager, right?
06:59Going to Chicago, he turned down how many jobs?
07:02He went to Chicago because Chicago is a unicorn.
07:06Caleb Williams, the last two years now, the four fastest quarterback runs, all Caleb Williams, all over 20 miles an
07:15hour.
07:16I mean, he made a throw to Cole commit yesterday that was every bit as good as anything you'll see
07:21from Mahomes.
07:21He also had a scramble that was as good as anything you'll see from Josh Allen or Lamar, all in
07:27the same game.
07:28That scramble was something because I thought he was dead to rights, and the next thing you know, he's down
07:32the sideline.
07:32And he won't be – no one is perfect.
07:34I'm making a point.
07:36That's why I've been high on the Bears.
07:38I understand the turnover regression.
07:41There's no way they're going to be plus 78 in turnovers.
07:43I think they're showing you it doesn't matter.
07:45We're going to outscore you anyway.
07:47So you can go ahead and score 37 points.
07:49We'll score 60.
07:50Ben Johnson lost his mind one time yesterday.
07:52Did you see going for it on fourth and inches on his own 21?
07:57He was feeling himself.
07:58Well, it didn't happen, and the Panthers scored.
08:01I understand, but it was just one of those, Mike, you're on a roll.
08:06Just go for it, man.
08:08When your defense isn't helping you out, you have to punt the ball.
08:11Just do me a favor and kick the ball, will you please?
08:13I'm just – analytics, there has to be a limit.
08:16He probably was on – did Dan Campbell go for it?
08:19All right, we're going for it.
08:21I just – I think the Lions are in the toughest division in football.
08:24And I just – hey, you know, you want to do your BOGO stuff when Geno comes to town
08:29or if you play the Titans?
08:31Fine.
08:32I won't stand in your way.
08:34We haven't struck BOGO territory yet.
08:37You got to show me you can dominate, and then we'll hit BOGO.
08:40We'll get more to people momentarily.
08:41David, text real quick.
08:43You got a few lined up.
08:45Lions need help on their secondary.
08:47We need Branch and Kirby back as soon as possible.
08:51But Branch, I agree with, but does anyone actually believe Kirby Joseph's a real person anymore?
08:56He can run on the sideline.
08:57And if Kirby made it back, do you think he would make it the whole game?
09:01Well, just like Giffes.
09:02He'll be all right.
09:02He can make it.
09:03But you know what?
09:03Don't bet against him.
09:05This one comes in and says, there's a text for you, Mike.
09:08Friday, when you broke down both Michigan game and the Lions game,
09:12you couldn't have broke them down better.
09:14Everything you said happened, and it was awesome.
09:16Now can I get the lottery numbers?
09:18Sure.
09:18I could try.
09:19No, I do laugh at that.
09:21I do wonder when some of the mouth breathers are out.
09:23Oh, Sparty Radio.
09:25How could Sparty Radio be the most accurate appraisal of your program?
09:30That's weird.
09:31You might have to sit with that for a minute and maybe go to a darkness retreat.
09:34Think about that one in the dark for a while.
09:37Here's an idea, because I approach it, everything is on Main Street.
09:42I don't have to like you to respect you, or I don't have to like you to give you an
09:45honest opinion.
09:46But you people are so used to people pandering to you,
09:50you don't understand what it's like to have a conversation.
09:53I didn't quit on your team.
09:54I haven't written Bryce off.
09:56Bryce could be anything 10 weeks from now.
09:58Well, here's what we're going to do.
09:59We're going to talk about what he is.
10:01And right now, he looks like he should be playing at Air Force.
10:04Or Navy.
10:05I mean, you look at Archie Manning.
10:07First half, not good.
10:08Second half, looked great.
10:10He can be anything he wants to be, but the bottom line is, I get tired.
10:14This happens all the time, and it's exclusive to U of M players.
10:20People demanding you say certain things about certain players.
10:23We did this with JJ.
10:25We had to do it with Aiden.
10:27Michigan fans couldn't even accept that Will Anderson had double the year he had that year
10:31and didn't know the other team's plays.
10:33The point I'm making is, no, we don't have to say those things.
10:37I watched the games.
10:39So, yeah, nine completions?
10:42They didn't let him throw the ball in the second half?
10:45I think he had two pass attempts?
10:46Four, I believe.
10:47And, oh, by the way, here's your drive chart in the second half.
10:50Punt, punt, punt, punt, two-yard touchdown because your defense gave you the ball.
10:54Oh, and Whittingham just basically said the quiet part out loud.
10:57Those are conversations we're going to have.
11:00With Bryce, it's nothing physical.
11:02Bryce should, honestly, wherever Bryce lives, foreclose on it.
11:05He should live at the facility and live in the film room.
11:09He's got to learn because the only thing they allowed him to do Saturday
11:12was basically swing pass, screen, and you're going to run it,
11:15which I told you would be the answer because Whittingham is not here to lose games.
11:21And he knows this kid can't play the position, but he's making 12 million bucks.
11:27And I'm kind of stuck with him.
11:29So, again, if he faltered with this game plan, he wouldn't start this week against UTEP.
11:34The point is he didn't play well, but he made the one play with his legs
11:38that I told you he'd make, and the defense got you that one turnover.
11:41The key is what happens when you fall behind.
11:43Oh, he'll crumble because he can't play the position right now.
11:46He's not ready.
11:48And it's all upstairs.
11:49He can't process.
11:51He can't read things.
11:51Look at when they went empty set.
11:53He didn't even count the rushers.
11:54That's why he took the sack and knocked you out of field goal range.
11:57He didn't even count.
11:59You got it.
11:59How could you not account for it?
12:01The guy's right there.
12:02How did you not see the guy?
12:03But the point I'm making is quarterbacks, with even a rudimentary understanding of their
12:09system, go to the line, and they have checks for a three, four, five, six-man, bare front.
12:15That's not happening right now.
12:17Hot route.
12:18Hot route.
12:19Red seven.
12:20Red seven.
12:21No, like, that's not happening right now.
12:24So you're playing with both arms tied behind your back.
12:26Now, look, he could be anything he wants down the line, but we're living here now.
12:33This is not acceptable if you plan on winning a national championship.
12:37Whatever.
12:38Sparty Radio.
12:38You're playing with both arms tied behind your back.
12:38You're playing with both arms tied behind your back.
12:39You
