00:00Right now on Fast and Loud.
00:04Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
00:07Hot rod hunter Richard Rawlings
00:08and master mechanic Aaron Kaufman
00:10haggle with a seller from the beyond.
00:13Dad?
00:1475.
00:15Yeah, our dad said 75.
00:17And score a 72 Mustang Fastback.
00:20Then Richard braves the frozen north
00:22in search of another pony.
00:24Wow!
00:24A legendary Boss 429.
00:26I don't want to leave it here.
00:27I don't even actually want it to leave my sight.
00:29And then pays a bone-chilling price
00:31for a rusted 69 Jag.
00:33I think this chair's stuck to my ass.
00:35But trouble strikes back at the garage
00:37when the Jag takes to the air.
00:39That's a problem, man!
00:40And the Fastback's interior takes a turn for the worse.
00:44Fifty shades of green.
00:45There's no recouping this.
00:46I mean, the money's spent.
00:47It's a week of thrills and spills.
00:50And it all leads up to one sink or swim moment.
00:53It's time.
00:54Boss 9 time.
00:56Come on, people.
01:00So what wonderful vehicle have we got now?
01:03Starts with an M.
01:04Mercury Marauder.
01:05Not.
01:06What's your favorite car in the whole world?
01:09It must be a Mustang.
01:1372 Mustang.
01:14Ugliest year.
01:15Oh, on top of that, guess what color it is.
01:18Oh, it's got to be green.
01:20I'm going to buy a 72 Mustang.
01:22I think I'd rather have been cleaning the gutters out of the shop today.
01:25Come on.
01:26This one's a Fastback?
01:27Dude, it's a good-looking body style.
01:28People are starting to dig on me.
01:29It's not because it's a good-looking car.
01:31It's because the other ones are more expensive.
01:34Just trust me on this one.
01:37What's going on, guys?
01:38You need a gentleman I talked to on the phone?
01:39I am.
01:40Glenn McHenry.
01:41Glenn, Richard Rawlings.
01:42Nice to meet you.
01:42Hi, I'm Tim McHenry.
01:43Hello, Aaron.
01:43Nice to meet you.
01:44Nice to meet you.
01:44So if I'm not missing my guest, this must be the green Mustang we were talking about.
01:47This is it.
01:48Wow.
01:49So you were telling me that your dad bought this new?
01:52Our other car was a Standard.
01:54Yeah.
01:54And my sister had to take her driving test.
01:57So he kind of bought this for her.
01:59And this is the sister?
01:59This is my sister.
02:00So do you know how to drive a Standard yet?
02:01Nope.
02:02Really?
02:03No, I never learned.
02:04Your dad did her an injustice.
02:05I know.
02:06I'm Tamara Kane.
02:07This is my little brother, Glenn McHenry.
02:10The car was our family car.
02:11My sister and myself both took our driving test, and it was one of the few race kind of family
02:16cars in the neighborhood.
02:18It might have been the fastest car where they lived, but the truth is, by 1972, your average
02:22Mustang had actually lost a little bit of its muscle.
02:24Over the years, the body had grown bigger and heavier, but the motor hadn't, which means
02:28even with that aerodynamic slope on the back, they call it a fastback, it couldn't go as
02:32fast.
02:32But who cares?
02:34The 1972 Mustang is still a desirable car.
02:37302, automatic, manual brakes, power steering, AC though.
02:42Yeah.
02:42You got to have that in Texas.
02:43Why are you guys wanting to sell it now?
02:45We needed somebody who was going to make it be the best possible it could be, and we're
02:50really doing it to honor my dad.
02:51Is that an original AC Delco?
02:53Yes, sir.
02:54It is.
02:54AM radio.
02:55So going through the car, I could immediately see where there's some Bondo damage on the
02:58right quarter panel, and you could see where the paint was kind of blended in a long
03:01time ago.
03:02But this, by all practical means, is an original nice car.
03:05I mean, they get a little nicer, but this one's good.
03:08The engine runs, it's green, the color that I love, it's a Mustang, the things that he
03:12hates.
03:13So this is a win-win for me, if I can get him down to the right price.
03:16So, um, what's it take to own it?
03:18Uh, probably 10.
03:22Quit looking at that part.
03:24Well, after we shake all the rust out of it, what's it worth?
03:279 to 5.
03:29Oh, we're headed in the right direction.
03:31Holy cow, those are my lines, dude.
03:33You getting into the negotiating game?
03:34Well, I like it, but I don't, it's not a $9,500 car.
03:37I mean, um, I was thinking more like 5.
03:415?
03:42The car, the car.
03:43It's just a green 72 Mustang at the end of the day.
03:45I'll tell you what, I'd go 8.
03:48It's going to need a lot of interior work, dash work, stuff like that.
03:53Yeah, I can come up to probably 6 grand.
03:5679.
03:58How about 6,500 cash?
04:00How about 7,500 cash?
04:02No, I like 6,500.
04:05Dad, 75.
04:06Yeah, our dad said 75.
04:08Now, I don't know about you, but I didn't hear dad say anything.
04:11He's looking at you right now.
04:12They called him Daddy-O.
04:14Hmm.
04:15But anyways, when I come out to do something like this,
04:17I kind of give myself a threshold that I don't want to go over.
04:19Put a certain amount of money in one pocket,
04:21keep some in another for a little backup,
04:23and sure enough, they were on my threshold.
04:25I can't walk away for 1,000, I don't think.
04:27That's what I brought was 7,500.
04:29That was my threshold, so.
04:30Well.
04:30Go with my gut instinct, that was all I was going to pay for it,
04:33so here you go, take the cash, give me the car.
04:35All right.
04:367,500 bucks?
04:387,500.
04:38That's a deal.
04:39That's a deal.
04:40Make my dad proud.
04:41Appreciate it, sir.
04:41We will, we'll get this thing loaded up.
04:42I got to go drink a beer or something.
04:45It was never about the money, it was always about my dad.
04:48And I hope he's looking down right now saying,
04:50atta boy, Glenn, atta boy.
04:52Yeah, that's what we wanted to do, ain't it, sis?
04:54Yeah.
04:54Okay.
04:55It's okay.
04:56Dad's looking down going, hey, y'all see that?
04:58That's my damn car.
05:017,500 bucks for this car, that's a good deal,
05:03because most 72 green Mustangs are probably in a junkyard,
05:05a crusher.
05:06I'm going to put a custom plate on here that says,
05:07Aaron loves this car.
05:09Aaron Hart Mustang.
05:10Well, if I have my way with it, I might.
05:13Look, the only problem I have with Mustangs is,
05:16Richard never lets me chop them up or juice them up.
05:19I'd like to cut the fenders off and widen them,
05:2124s in the back, 22s, Boss 429,
05:24definitely overdrive transmission.
05:26I mean, if I had my way with it,
05:28I think I could get on board with the car,
05:30but I don't think I'm going to get a budget that big on this one.
05:33No, you're getting a small budget and a small time frame.
05:35That's how this thing works.
05:36Back to hating it.
05:37All right.
05:50Is this the weird, awkward part
05:51where everybody just sits and stares at the car?
05:53This one's a decent little car.
05:55I think we can just have Sue do the interior up,
05:58paint it, tune it up, get a little wheel and tire on it.
06:00I agree.
06:00It's a cute little car, but golly.
06:03Hey, look, there's Tom, and he's late like usual.
06:05Glad you could show up today.
06:06Yeah, glad you could join us, Tom.
06:08Your hair looks a little disheveled.
06:09So running a business like Gas Monkey Garage is pretty simple.
06:12It's about getting the cars bought,
06:13getting them running, and getting them gone.
06:15And I tell you what,
06:16you can't run a business if the people aren't going to do their job,
06:18which means the monkeys got to get here on time.
06:21Why are you late?
06:23My alarm didn't go off in a proximity for me to hear it.
06:28Tom's supposed to get money from me
06:29when he spends his time working on my cars
06:32so I can get them sold and make some profit.
06:35It's called a job, Tom.
06:36You know, you came in late the other day,
06:38and then you took a lunch?
06:40Did you know on that day that I took a lunch
06:42that I also went and saved you like $800 in parts
06:45I've been gathering around here that I took back to you?
06:48That part is your job.
06:50Okay, well, we're talking about this car,
06:52so go over there.
06:53Go away.
06:54I'm going.
06:55No, faster.
06:56Now you're expecting too much faster.
06:59Now let's get back to what we were originally talking about
07:01before we were so rudely interrupted.
07:03I would like to put a four-barrel carburetor on,
07:06and instead of just putting 15-inch Mach 1s on,
07:07I think we need something plus size
07:09because the hood is as long as most cars.
07:11I'm cool with that.
07:12Strap kit on it, like the Mach 1 strap kit or something like that?
07:14I think that might help jazz it up a little bit.
07:16Can we do all that for three or four grand worth of parts
07:18and some labor?
07:19Yeah, between four and five.
07:21Done.
07:21So there you go.
07:22This isn't going to be like one of our really big, massive builds.
07:25It's kind of like a mini build.
07:26I mean, we're going to get it in here,
07:27get the motor running,
07:28take a couple of days to get it painted,
07:29and throw some wheels on it.
07:31Let's sue jack around with the interior
07:32and kick it out the door for maybe 12, 15 grand.
07:35It's called making profit.
07:37It's pretty cool.
07:38Just try it.
07:38I like it.
07:39Just make it look a little better.
07:40Make me some money.
07:42All we got to do is put it on lift and get to work.
07:44Well, then you all do that.
07:45See you later.
07:46Thanks, son.
07:47Don't touch me ever.
07:50You guys at home might be wondering
07:51why I'm not spending a whole bunch of time and energy on this Mustang.
07:54The truth is,
07:55this isn't the only Mustang I'm going to wrangle this week.
07:57I got my eye on another one.
07:58Now, you see, what I need right now
08:00is a big-time car
08:01to take to the Barrett-Jackson auction.
08:02I mean, this is a huge auction,
08:04over $100 million worth of cars every year.
08:07All the high rollers fly in and money starts flying.
08:09You can't just bring any car to this auction.
08:11You got to bring a ringer.
08:12It's one that's going to make a lot of cash,
08:14one that everybody wants,
08:15one that's rare.
08:16So let me tell you,
08:17that's where the second Mustang comes in.
08:19So grab a coat and some gloves,
08:20because where we're going is cold.
08:27It's a whole different world out here, man.
08:29Totally different than Texas.
08:30Look at the snow.
08:31I'm wearing like eight layers of clothes.
08:33Yeah, I...
08:34This thing says it's negative eight degrees.
08:37It is cold.
08:38So what would bring a couple of warm-blooded Texas boys
08:40this far up north?
08:41How about one of the rarest Mustangs ever,
08:43sitting in a container in the middle of Minnesota?
08:45This guy's got a 429 Boss Mustang.
08:48Unreal.
08:50So moving on from Fastback,
08:51because let me tell you,
08:52the Boss 429 Mustang, that's it.
08:54Back in the 60s,
08:55Chrysler had a 426 Hemi motor,
08:57and they were winning race after race at NASCAR.
08:59And Ford, they wanted in on that game.
09:01Ford was already sitting on a huge,
09:02powerful 429 Hemi V8 motor,
09:05but it was too big to fit the car.
09:06So Ford went out and hired a company called CarCraft,
09:08sent the Mustangs over there,
09:09and they modified the wheel well
09:11so they could shoehorn that big motor in there.
09:12And boom, the Boss 429 was born.
09:16Now, they only made about 1,300 of these cars,
09:18which makes them a really, really rare car,
09:19which now makes them really, really valuable.
09:22And you know what that means?
09:23A lot of people pay through the nose and anywhere else
09:25just to get their hands on one.
09:27There's only two cars out there
09:28that everybody's chasing right now.
09:29Everybody's chasing a black 71 Hemi Cuda,
09:32and everybody's chasing a 69 Raven Black Boss 9.
09:35Once again, we're chasing a holy grail car,
09:37Boss 429.
09:39If it's there and we can get it bought,
09:41then it's a home run.
09:43No, I'm sliding.
09:44Go.
09:46That was a fail.
09:48Coming up, a very special Mustang comes out of deep freeze.
09:53And Richard has had enough of Minnesota weather.
10:02This is horrible.
10:03I want to go back to Texas.
10:04It is cold.
10:05Eight below.
10:06That's what it says on the thing right here.
10:07So, Dennis and I need a big-time car
10:09to take to the Barrett-Jackson auction.
10:10And I heard about a car collector family up here in Minnesota.
10:13This looks like it right here.
10:14It supposedly has one of the rarest Mustangs there is,
10:16the legendary Boss 429.
10:19If it's really here, well, we got 200 Gs with us.
10:22We're going home with that car.
10:23You Skip?
10:24Yep.
10:24All right, the guy in the office said we can just head back here.
10:27How you doing?
10:28You got a Boss 429 car?
10:30Yep.
10:30Sitting right in there.
10:31My name is Skip Nolan.
10:33This is my dad, Floyd.
10:35We buy junk cars, muscle cars, antique cars.
10:42That's rigging cool.
10:43That is cool.
10:44Sure enough, the Boss 9 story is real, and the car's there.
10:48It's raven black.
10:49That is rare.
10:50There was only 83 made.
10:51This, my brother, will be a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
10:55Now we just need to get it inside, check all the numbers,
10:57and make sure it's correct.
10:58Because if it is what it is, and we can get it bought,
11:00then, boom, we're making money all day long.
11:03Wow.
11:04Car craft decal's still on here, Richard.
11:06It's pretty neat.
11:07Oh, look at that motor, dude.
11:09That is what I'm talking about right there.
11:12It looks correct to me.
11:13Cool thing about these cars is they're almost impossible to fake.
11:17Because all the shock towers are different, the firewall's different.
11:20Oh, it has to be.
11:21If you grab that big motor in there.
11:23After looking at it, it's not rough.
11:24I mean, the car will clean up.
11:26This one looks good.
11:27A great find.
11:28What would you want for it?
11:29I guess $175,000.
11:31That's a little strong for a car that's sitting here like this,
11:34but I told Richard on the way up it's going to be at least $100,000.
11:37And I bought $100,000, so I'm offering that.
11:40No, we're too far apart.
11:42Hmm.
11:43I really figured the car was worth $175,000.
11:46When it came in at $100,000, I knew I wasn't going to let it go for that.
11:50Now what the hell are you selling, Skip?
11:52Yeah, money talks, walks.
11:56Well, I don't want to leave it here.
11:57I don't even actually want it to leave my sight.
12:00I'll go $125,000 cash right now.
12:03It's $125,000 cash.
12:05How many times do people walk in with that kind of money, Floyd?
12:08Never.
12:09My dad always told me when they're standing there with the cash, take it run.
12:14$127,000.
12:19Take my glove off for this one.
12:21Get my shaking hand ready while I'm thinking about it.
12:23You got a deal.
12:24What?
12:25That's my line.
12:27Thank you, brother.
12:28Right on.
12:29I really didn't think we were going to get the car bond.
12:30Dude, when he pulled it out of the container, I knew we were taking it home.
12:34He'd already made up his mind.
12:35He just figured out how many he was going to beat us up for.
12:37Well, this is a sealed brick guaranteed by the government, serial numbered.
12:41Feel free to count it, but there's a hundred.
12:43Dennis, out of your Ziploc baggie of mismatched bills, can you find the rest?
12:47Yep.
12:47I think it's an absolutely get you some of that moment.
12:50Do it.
12:51A Raven Black Boss 429.
12:53Yeah!
12:54Preach it.
12:54It's a Holy Grail moment.
12:55Say it, D.
12:56Be excited.
12:57I am excited.
12:57Get you some of that!
13:00Get you some of that!
13:02It's black and they made 83 of them.
13:12So, here's the program.
13:13We're going to do as much tune-up as necessary and as possible.
13:17This car needs every little bit of help it can get.
13:21Ain't that the truth.
13:22So, while Richard's up north chasing some Holy Grail car,
13:26I'm stuck here in Dallas trying to get this fastback to at least live up to its name.
13:30One thing I was talking to Richard about is ditching the intake and a carburetor on the two-barrel, going
13:35to a four.
13:36We've got a new manifold on its way and then a new carburetor.
13:40Let's just tear the top half of the motor off, man.
13:42All right.
13:43Give me a couple hours.
13:43Sure.
13:44Thanks.
13:45So, the first problem I'm going to address is this is a big, heavy car.
13:49It needs a little help getting out of its own way.
13:51We got a drink, buddy.
13:52So, I'm going to have Jordan and Tom take the two-barrel manifold off, put a four-barrel manifold on.
13:57It should definitely help put a little giddy up in the hitch and a little help with the shine under
14:01the hood department, too.
14:02EGR, poor tank clogged.
14:04Heads look decent.
14:05Well, they even kept the antifreeze changed, so the head's barely even pitted.
14:09If you watch the show, you know I tend to go a little overboard with some of the cars.
14:14But this time, we're going to try and keep it simple, do the mods that Richard wants us to do,
14:19and try and get this thing done and ready to go to Sue's in the next 24 hours.
14:22But I got one thing on old Ricardo.
14:25At least I'm going to stay nice and warm while I'm doing it.
14:29This looks awesome.
14:30It's like a winter wonderland.
14:32I wonder if Santa's here.
14:33Dude, you probably still do believe in Santa.
14:36Yeah, I do.
14:36I believe in the almighty dollar.
14:38So, boss is in the bag, but Dennis and I aren't done with this frozen tundra.
14:41I mean, if we're up here, we might as well check everything out.
14:43There's a guy down the road that's supposed to have a whole bunch of cars scattered all over his property,
14:47and we're going to go over there and check it out because I still got a little bit of cash
14:51burning a hole in my pocket.
14:53What's going on, guys?
14:54Hi, can we help you?
14:55Yeah.
14:56Richard Rawlings, we spoke on the phone.
14:57Mr. Vaughn?
14:58Welcome.
14:58Hi.
14:59Miss Vaughn?
14:59How are you?
15:00Hi, Dennis Collins.
15:01Good morning.
15:01Hi, Dennis.
15:02Welcome.
15:02You guys just got cars all scattered through the woods here?
15:05You bet.
15:06Help yourself.
15:06You can go look all you want.
15:09Yep.
15:09Mr. and Miss Vaughn told us just to walk on through the woods there.
15:12There's some cars.
15:13I didn't know if this was, like, frozen deliverance or what, but it started feeling pretty weird.
15:18I would have given this a pass, but Dennis heard him say that he has a jaguar out there and
15:22he wants to go see it.
15:24Jaguars don't run around in the snow, dude.
15:27Dude, really?
15:28We're going to track through the snow to find a jaguar that's probably rusted out?
15:31Yeah, that's what we did.
15:32We got him chasing cars.
15:33There it is right there.
15:35It's like a 68 or 69.
15:37Dude, this is awesome.
15:38At least it's an E-type.
15:39We're not looking at a four-door.
15:40I thought it was cool to find an E-type jag sitting under some trees.
15:43It's been there forever.
15:44There's nothing left over here, dude.
15:46It is a two-seat car, which is desirable.
15:49It's a 69, which is not the most desirable.
15:51The motor's sitting outside, which is not desirable.
15:53I'll tell you what's not desirable.
15:56I think this chair's stuck to my ass.
15:59Dude, this is ridiculous.
16:00Is this even worth having?
16:02Dude, sometimes the junk European cars bring as much as selling a good American car.
16:06We're going to make an offer on this.
16:07We're just going to lowball it.
16:08We're not going to be able to tell anything by even wiping all the snow off.
16:11This thing's so rough.
16:19Well, we found the jaguar.
16:21We did, huh?
16:22What's left of it?
16:23The one that's rougher than the stucco back, though?
16:25Yeah, it's pretty rough.
16:26How much is that?
16:28I think they're a crush for about $480.
16:30Yeah.
16:31So how much is that piece of yard art?
16:33Why don't you make me an offer?
16:34I don't know what it's really worth.
16:35You just did.
16:36$480.
16:36We've got to get up a little bit.
16:39This is your world, dude.
16:40You're the specialty European market, dude.
16:43Seriously, $3,500.
16:45I bought four.
16:47All right, deal.
16:47$4,000, not $340, yeah.
16:50So the deal's done?
16:51Yeah.
16:51Four grand.
16:52Yeah.
16:52We'll be back in the spring to pick it up.
16:53All right.
16:53This is miserable.
16:54How do you guys live up here?
16:55Woo!
16:56It is cold.
16:58So we bought a rusty jag.
17:00Yes, we did.
17:00It was in the money, and it'll work.
17:03Quit hating and quit doubting.
17:04I'm not hating or doubting.
17:05I'm freezing.
17:07Bring me out here in this crap.
17:10Coming up, Dustin finds a new use for the forklift.
17:14Just pick it up and take it off the truck.
17:16I'm trying.
17:16Let's see what happens.
17:17While Richard finds out whether his Mustang's a boss or a loss.
17:27So we're working on a pretty slim budget with our Mustang.
17:30We've already upped the performance a little bit by going from a two-barrel to a four-barrel.
17:34But now it's time to see if we can improve the way it sits.
17:40What are we doing to it?
17:41Lowering it.
17:42What we're talking about here is new springs, new shocks.
17:45So don't blink.
17:46This definitely won't take long.
17:49Bing, bong.
17:52Now one part of this particular job is replacing the rear shocks.
17:56I'm trying to find where the shocks bolt are.
17:59On the inside, all the way next to the back seat.
18:01Which means one of us has to get up close and personal with the back of this car.
18:07Ta-da!
18:09Aw, .
18:11There's not a lot of room in here.
18:13I got lots of room where I'm at.
18:15But it smells so good.
18:17I'm waiting for rat poison.
18:18Hurry up, Tom.
18:20I'm going as fast as I can.
18:22Rat poison.
18:23I don't want you in rat poison.
18:25You're no good to me as a carcass.
18:27A few more minutes.
18:27We'll be ready for the other side.
18:29The other side, this sucks.
18:36A little bit better weather down here.
18:38Yeah, way better.
18:39Holy cow.
18:41Did this car break in half?
18:43It looks like the back support broke.
18:45So you remember that rusted jag that Dennis made me buy up in the frozen tundra of Minnesota?
18:49He's like, Richard, I promise you this will make money, et cetera and so forth.
18:52Well, it doesn't look that much better under the Texas sun either.
18:55It's Arden Flats.
18:56It doesn't roll.
18:57It's just a cluster.
19:02You're the official getter off her.
19:05Get that off the truck.
19:09No, you got to get the forks under it, dude.
19:13I'm trying.
19:17That's a problem.
19:20Just pick it up and take it off the truck.
19:22I'm trying.
19:23You just...
19:24You're insane.
19:25You know that?
19:26There's only one way to get this thing off.
19:28Let's try this.
19:30Whoa, whoa, whoa!
19:34Okay, that's a problem, man.
19:35There you go.
19:37You're up in the air anyway.
19:39What are you going to do with this?
19:40I don't know.
19:41Throw it in the ditch over there.
19:43So you might be watching this and you think, oh, you know, Dustin's a crappy forklift driver
19:46and Richard doesn't care.
19:48I don't care.
19:49I think this is already thrown away money.
19:51So just get it off the truck.
19:52Whatever's left, we'll take pictures of, stick it on the interweb, and sell it.
19:58So now that all that's out of the way, I can finally get down to what I want to play
20:00with.
20:01The holy grail, Boss 429 Mustang.
20:03Dang, dude.
20:04So the car beat me here.
20:05Yeah.
20:06It's a pretty nice piece.
20:07Piece?
20:08It's a Boss 429, brother.
20:10Jade black and unrestored.
20:11I mean, an unrestored Boss 9 is just unheard of.
20:14When I bought this frozen Mustang, it had been sitting in the cold so long that I was a
20:17little hesitant to just start the motor up without having the guys check it out.
20:20I mean, the motor on this car is the most expensive part.
20:23The rest of it, as Aaron would say, just a Mustang.
20:25But at the end of the day, it's a race car, and if it's going to bring big money at
20:28the
20:28auction, then I need it running, and I need that to happen fast.
20:31I got two days flat before the truck's here to pick this up, to take it to Barrett-Jackson.
20:34Is it running yet?
20:36We've looked at the car.
20:37We don't see a reason why it shouldn't run.
20:39We have not fired it off yet.
20:40We found one broke one, so we're getting that replaced so that way all the brakes work first,
20:44because you know us.
20:45We like to drive things around here.
20:47Yeah, it's going to go through the wall.
20:47I needed to run, drive, just do what it's supposed to do.
20:50We're selling it as an unrestored survivor original car.
20:54Cool.
20:55Why is Tom up there?
20:56Tom is in there because it's a lot easier to keep him contained in the car than let him
20:59down and let him wander off, because then it takes me 20 minutes to find him.
21:03This is a good idea.
21:04You've got to keep doing that.
21:08Okay, so I can't do anything with this Mustang until they get it running, but it turns out
21:12it's raining Mustangs here at Gas Monkey Garage.
21:14The green one's ready to rock.
21:24So my plan for this mini-build Mustang has been pretty simple from the start.
21:29First, you've got to make sure it passes the Richard Burnout Test.
21:33Cool.
21:34Check that one off the list.
21:35Now you've got to spiff it up on the inside so you know what's coming next.
21:40Hey, what's up, right?
21:42You got green for me?
21:43Ratio, he showed up with a green, green Mustang.
21:47Are you going to eat that thing?
21:48Yeah.
21:48When it gets big enough?
21:49I got grill.
21:50Let's do it.
21:51He want to put my cat on a barbecue.
21:55Say, let's eat it.
21:56This is really simple and really easy.
21:57I didn't even bring Aaron to describe it.
21:59Okay.
21:59See what's in there?
22:00Yeah.
22:01I want it to be redone to look good.
22:03So we're going to keep with the same coloring and redo it.
22:05Front and the back?
22:06The back seat actually looks good.
22:08No sense in covering it.
22:10Headliner needs to be done.
22:11It's got some places where it's sagging.
22:12The dash pad needs to be done.
22:14I mean, this is just a quick one for us.
22:15Rachel's favorite color is green.
22:17He always buys everything green.
22:19I think green is very ugly.
22:21Hey, kitty, go pee-pee.
22:22Go pee-pee.
22:23Go over there.
22:24Go pee-pee.
22:26Carpet looks pretty bad.
22:27I don't think we need to do the carpet.
22:28What is wrong with you?
22:30This is a cheap car, Sue.
22:31I don't want to put a bunch of money into it.
22:32So let's spend like...
22:33Of course.
22:34Who's talking?
22:35You're cheap.
22:36Hold on, let me check that out.
22:38Yeah, that's good.
22:39All right, so we got to get through the formalities.
22:41You know how this goes.
22:42I talk bad about her.
22:43She talks bad about me.
22:44Yada, yada, yada.
22:45Then we got to talk about the important stuff.
22:47The green stuff.
22:48Okay, so how much is this going to cost me?
22:50You need an abacus?
22:52$100.
22:53What?
22:54$200.
22:55How about $800 and I pay up front?
22:56No.
22:57He's cheap, so I give him cheap-ass monkey's price.
23:01All right, I'll take the $1,200.
23:03See you later.
23:05You got till tomorrow.
23:07How am I getting home?
23:08I didn't bring Aaron.
23:09I'll just walk.
23:20All right, so the brake's working?
23:22Brake's working and we're ready to bust it off.
23:24You feel good about everything?
23:25Because, man, we're full of this motor and I, we're shot.
23:27Right there.
23:28Well, we got fuel up to our carburetor, so we're ready to fire it.
23:31Yeah, she's good to go.
23:32That makes me nervous.
23:33All right, do it.
23:34Let's see what happens.
23:35Cross your fingers.
23:36The Boss 9 is a very, very iconic piece of Americana.
23:42It's not as much as the car is.
23:44Basically, it's merely a vessel to carry an engine.
23:48So if the engine doesn't fire, then basically all I've got is a big empty shell.
23:51And then I'd kiss my six-figure paycheck goodbye.
23:54Drum roll.
23:57Coming up, the Jaguar puts Richard in the black.
24:00Who in the hell wanted this?
24:02While the fastback interior has him seeing red.
24:06Why do I have eight different colors of green in here?
24:10Besides the Mustang, what other car sported the Boss 429 name in 1969?
24:15Was it A, Mercury Cougar, B, Ford Falcon, C, Ford Thunderbird, or D, Mercury Monterey?
24:23The answer, when we come back.
24:28Besides the Mustang, what other car sported the Boss 429 name in 1969?
24:34The answer is A.
24:36Ford commissioned just two Boss 429 Cougars in that same year.
24:43So I picked up this Boss 429 Mustang all the way up in Minnesota,
24:46and the Barrett-Jackson auction is in just a few days.
24:48This car's a legend amongst collectors, and it can bring a six-figure payday if the engine runs.
24:53Drum roll.
24:58Yes.
25:00Yeah.
25:01So you hear that sound?
25:02That's the sound of money.
25:03That is what I'm talking about.
25:05Feel all right in there?
25:06Sounds all right here?
25:07Yeah, everything looks good.
25:11So my guys did their job, and that engine is purring like a kitten curled up in Aaron's comfy little
25:15beard.
25:15That'll work.
25:16Brian!
25:18What's up, Richard?
25:19So now I need Brian from Detail Works to do his part of the job,
25:21which is get this thing cleaned up and get it cleaned up fast,
25:23because if it's going to make the auction block, it's got to leave tomorrow.
25:26All right, we are in a world of hurt.
25:28Clean it up.
25:28Don't mess with anything.
25:30Make sure that everybody can see what they're looking at.
25:31This is a Survivor original car.
25:33I don't want to hide anything.
25:34I don't want to do anything other than just get it cleaned,
25:36let them know what they're looking at.
25:37Engine compartment's got a lot of that red dust and dirt and crap on it.
25:40Okay.
25:41Just get on it.
25:41You've got 24 hours, and this thing's got to be ready to roll across the stage at Barrett-Jackson.
25:4524 hours?
25:46That's like 70 hours worth of work.
25:48I was thinking it was more like 100 hours worth of work, but I don't care about that.
25:51You've got 20.
25:51Okay, well, I brought my sleeping bag, so...
25:53There is no sleeping.
25:55I've got to sleep at least 30 minutes.
25:57Okay.
25:57No, that ain't happening.
25:57You're down to 23 hours and 45 minutes.
25:59All right, I'm on it.
26:03So Richard and I are kind of playing tag team on the interior work with the 72 Fastback Mustang.
26:09He dropped it off earlier today, but apparently Sue's got a problem color matching the color for the interior.
26:14Hey, so what are we going to do about this vinyl?
26:17I don't know.
26:18You tell me.
26:19All right.
26:19Well, let's look.
26:20Are these samples that we have?
26:22This is one set.
26:23This is another set.
26:24And this is the seat.
26:26Yeah.
26:27I think this is good.
26:29I agree.
26:30That looks better.
26:31I like the dappling in it.
26:32Let's look at the car.
26:33This Mustang, there's kind of a lot of strange color greens in the car, but it looks like it's going
26:38to gel.
26:38This is what the color of the car will be.
26:40You've got to look at the door panel and the backseat.
26:43He's not going to do that backseat.
26:44I'm kind of surprised at that, actually.
26:45Yeah.
26:46It's 100% stupid.
26:47So I've been working with Richard for quite a few years now, and there's one thing I've learned.
26:52Any time Richard's left making decisions on a car will pretty much result in a massive disaster.
26:56This time, Richard tells Sue that he wants the front seats done, but not the backseat.
27:00Well, this is definitely a situation where I've got to step in, and even though it's Richard's money, I've got
27:05to keep him from hurting himself.
27:06This right here is so different from the backseat.
27:09We're doing the backseat.
27:10We're not going to have different color front seats than we have the backseat.
27:13Okay.
27:14I'm telling you.
27:14And he don't want no carpet.
27:17It's...
27:17It don't look right.
27:18I can live with the carpet, but we're not putting two different color seats in this thing.
27:23What are you going to charge him for that?
27:24See, I charge $500.
27:26500 bucks?
27:27Right.
27:27All right, do it.
27:28We're going to do the right thing.
27:29That's just...
27:30Anyone who would make that decision is out of their mind.
27:33Yeah.
27:34Basically, I'm here to protect Richard from himself, because he would run the world's strangest used car lot if it
27:39wasn't for me.
27:40Whenever he comes over here and wants you to do half the interior in a car, call me.
27:46This ain't my bull to ride.
27:47I'm just trying to keep it in the pen, you know what I mean?
27:49Yeah.
27:49All right.
27:50Okay.
27:50I'm out of here.
27:51I'll see you.
27:51I hope I'm not there when Aaron tell Richard about what he did.
27:55They're going to have a fight.
27:56But that's not my problem.
27:59I only do upholstery.
28:08Ta-da!
28:10How's it going, Richard?
28:11So you're the driver?
28:12Yes, sir.
28:12Richard, man.
28:13How's it going?
28:14Who in the hell wanted this?
28:17That would be my boss.
28:18He's overseas?
28:19Yes, sir.
28:20Over in England.
28:21I thought Dennis was out of his mind when he insisted that we pay $4,000 for this rusted-out
28:25Jag.
28:26Turns out Richard's wrong.
28:27And that doesn't happen very often, but it happened today.
28:29I mean, I stuck this thing on the internet, and it still brings $6,800.
28:34I mean, that's a profit of $2,800.
28:36He's going to ship it all the way over, and he can still make money on this rusty Hulk.
28:40Yes, sir.
28:40The market over in Europe, man, is crazy.
28:43That's cool.
28:44You got a truck in the trailer?
28:45Get after it.
28:46They'll help you load the motor when you're ready.
28:48I'm going to have to go tell Dennis that somehow he made the right decision.
28:51On this one, it's definitely all sales final.
28:53It's gone.
28:54Good luck.
28:54I don't want to see it.
28:55I mean, I'll probably see parts of it on the freeway on my way home, because they're going
28:59to just blow off.
29:02So today's starting out just the way I like it.
29:04I mean, I unloaded the rust bucket and made some pocket change.
29:07The Big Boss 429 is getting its shine on for the Barrett-Jackson sale.
29:10And the green torpedo, well, it's ready for pickup at Sue's.
29:15What up, Sue?
29:16Oh, hi.
29:18Let me pick it up.
29:20Okay.
29:21Where did that color green come from?
29:23Who picked that out?
29:24It looks like a Christmas tree in there.
29:26Me and Aaron, we picked it.
29:28Are you sure Aaron picked this?
29:30Yes, I'm sure.
29:31There's like seven different colors of green in here.
29:33It took the back seat, too.
29:35Aaron agreed.
29:36You know, when I usually pick up a car from Sue's, it goes pretty uneventful.
29:39But this time, Aaron and Sue went rogue on me, started adding back seat and all this other
29:42crap, and I'm not really digging the results.
29:45Beautiful.
29:45Everything match good, don't you think?
29:48Well, I guess you get what you pay for.
29:49And you know what?
29:50I don't even know what I'm supposed to pay for this.
29:52Oh, I remember.
29:54So now I owe you $900?
29:55No.
29:56Why?
29:56$17.
29:57He only want to pay $900?
29:59No way, Jose.
30:01No, no, no, no, no.
30:02When we were here, you said $900.
30:04Oh, no.
30:04Oh, no.
30:06Aaron agreed to do the back seat and everything else.
30:08First of all, we agreed $1,200.
30:11And then Aaron said he wanted to do the back seat, paying everything.
30:15So there's $500 extra there.
30:18Well, I owe you $900.
30:19You're going to have to get the other $800 from Aaron.
30:23That's not going to work.
30:24Well, he's the one who approved it.
30:25Either pay or I keep the car.
30:29Well, this is easy.
30:30You can have it.
30:31No, seriously, owe you $1,700?
30:34Yes, sir.
30:35And look at the carpet.
30:36I told you not to do carpet.
30:37Since you're nice to me, I throw that in.
30:40Hmm.
30:41You didn't say, how nice, Sue?
30:43That was very nice of you.
30:44I greatly appreciate it.
30:45Now you open the door so I can leave and go back to my wonderful abode.
30:48Okay.
30:49So I'm leaving here $500 poorer than I planned on.
30:52And what did I get for it?
30:5450 shades of green.
30:55Dang, dude.
30:57Now I know Aaron doesn't like Mustangs, but I'm starting to wonder if he's even color blind as well.
31:08Okay.
31:09I got a question for you, cowboy.
31:10What's that?
31:11Why do I have eight different colors of green in here?
31:13Because she gave me basically a color that was like our forklift and this.
31:17And so this right here is far more appropriate than that stuff over there.
31:21And I did have her do the back seat.
31:23But, my God, it is bad.
31:25I mean, I don't know what to do now.
31:27What are you going to do?
31:28Go back and try to do black interior or just leave it?
31:31No, there's no recoup in this.
31:32I mean, the money spent, we're not going to make enough money to cover the cost of what this was.
31:35You know, I wasn't planning on doing much with this mini-build Mustang anyways.
31:38I was supposed to get it in and get it out and make a few thousand bucks.
31:41And now, if someone sits in this car, I don't think they're going to buy it.
31:44Well, here's what I need from you.
31:46One shade of green on the outside only, like a cool green.
31:49Not a cool green, that green.
31:51It needs to be that green.
31:51Factory green.
31:52We're not going to tear it down.
31:53Just slap some paint on it.
31:54We're already behind.
31:55It's going to either be a push or a little bit of a loser.
31:59It'll lose.
32:00All right, just scuff it, paint it, get it out.
32:02Well, then, can we get a new hood?
32:04Because that hood's pretty beat up.
32:05I don't want to fix it.
32:06Work a couple of the dents, the big ones.
32:07If you do one, you got to do them all.
32:11All right, get the one with those snorkels in it, like the Mach 1 hood.
32:14Okay.
32:15We'll put the Mach 1 stripe kit on it when you get done and just slap green paint on it.
32:18I know Aaron didn't really ever love this Mustang, and right now, I'm not liking it myself.
32:21But I'm more concerned with the Boss 429, because I got it cleaned up and it's looking like a winner.
32:26And now, it's got to go across the auction block and actually win.
32:29Now, as for its poor cousin, the Fastback Mustang, hopefully when we get through painting it and slapping some wheels
32:33on it, eh, you know, maybe it'll come around and maybe I'll like it.
32:36Just get it done, paint, I'm going to sell it.
32:41Coming up.
32:41Let's do it.
32:42It's all on the line for the GMG Boss.
32:46Opportunity's beating your door down, folks.
32:48Do not let this slip out of your fingers.
33:05It is just what I want to do to get hält Germans in here.
33:08Of course.
33:09Give me some tea, guys.
33:10Do not let this rule happen.
33:10Let's ×”×¢zment sign the building signer.
33:10.
33:25The seventeen gearbox thatви Lon Method,
33:48Dude, this place looks a little freaky.
33:50It actually looks a little bit scary.
33:52You've definitely seen way too many Hollywood movies.
33:54Besides, I yelped it.
33:56It's good.
33:56I'm going to go have a beer, and if there's not any in there,
33:59it's going to be scary for you two.
34:00I'm going to go down here and check out the dock.
34:16This place is weird.
34:18Ah, it's Miller time.
34:22I'm getting outside.
34:25Aaron, Christy, I don't know where you guys went.
34:28I found the beers.
34:30If I don't find you soon, they're going to be gone.
34:34Come on, guys.
34:35Where y'all at?
34:37Come on.
34:39This is getting boring.
34:40Twirky time.
34:42Gobble, gobble.
34:53Ass monkey.
35:04So when we found this 1972 Mustang Fastback, what was really neat about it was it was a
35:09complete car, and it had a lot of potential.
35:11What it didn't have was eyeball, and so basically we needed to jazz it up, just make it a little
35:17cooler.
35:18Aaron decided to take the old two-barrel carburetor off, throw on an intake and a four-barrel.
35:22The car performs a little better.
35:24Fuel mileage might be down a little bit, but that's all in the name of good fun.
35:27The next thing was we lowered the front a little bit.
35:30We changed the shocks all the way around.
35:31For the wheels, we've got 17-inch Magnum 500, similar type of wheels from American Racing.
35:38Now, I was the one that took it over to Sue, and all I really wanted to do was control
35:42my budget, so do the minimum.
35:44It needed a dash pad.
35:45It needed some front seat covers.
35:46I think the rest of it could have cleaned up just fine, but you know what?
35:50Aaron went over to check on it, and that wasn't going to be good enough, so now I got
35:53a back seat and 17 different shades of green.
35:57Next, we had to throw some paint on it, so we passed it on to Casey.
36:01The hood was so badly dented and warped that the only option we really had was to put
36:05a Mach 1-style dual-scoop hood on.
36:08Now, I've got a painted car and racing stripes, and wham-a, we got ourselves a good-looking
36:1472 Mustang that any 16-year-old pimple-faced kid would be proud to drive to his high school.
36:19You can get into this, go hang out on the weekends and be proud of it.
36:22Or you can come out to a place like this, it reminds me of certain movies I saw when
36:27I was a kid, and you could get killed.
36:29So, can we get out of here?
36:30Yeah, I kind of get the heebie-jeebies.
36:43So, here we are at the Barrett Jackson auction in sunny Scottsdale, getting ready to sell our
36:47Boss 429.
36:49It's 72 degrees, I got my rollie on my arm, and we're drinking Shondon.
36:54This is way better than Minnesota.
36:56I mean, what was it, like minus 17,000 degrees or something?
36:58Negative 26, actually.
37:00Golly, that's cool.
37:00And the wind was blowing.
37:01That is cold.
37:03Barrett Jackson is kind of like a giant car carnival.
37:06You have 300,000 prospective buyers at one time.
37:09Dennis and I have been coming here every year for, God, 11, 12 years, maybe longer.
37:13It's always in January, so we try to make a satchel full of money and start the year off
37:16right.
37:17And we brought the hee.
37:18And here we are.
37:19Inside the tent, front and center.
37:21It's awesome.
37:22Our Boss 9 car is probably the rarest find in a very, very long time in the Mustang world.
37:27So it's got its own press already.
37:29I mean, it has lit up the internet.
37:31Everybody knows this car is here at Scottsdale, and everybody's going to want it.
37:34I mean, if you're a Boss 9 fan, you don't find an unrestored black, black Boss 429 car.
37:39So all you got to do is go to the front, and when they start bidding, just put your hand
37:42up.
37:43Don't ever take it down.
37:44Don't put it down?
37:44Yeah.
37:45So I'm hoping to get 300 grand for this car, but it's part of the deal at Barrett Jackson.
37:47It is balls to the wall.
37:49Can't put a reserve on it?
37:50It is all risk.
37:51This thing better shine like a diamond in a goat's ass when it's up there.
37:53Dude, this thing looks awesome.
37:54It's ready to go.
37:55Next on stage.
37:56Let's do it.
37:57It's going, no matter what.
37:59It's time.
38:00Boss 9 time.
38:01Lot 1077, 1969 Ford Mustang, Boss 429 fast back, unrestored.
38:07Boss 429.
38:08Steve?
38:08These opportunities don't happen very often.
38:10You guys out there come for one car.
38:12This is a spot to use it right here, John.
38:14I'm so nervous I decided to watch this from, like, way back in the back of the hall.
38:18I mean, I just hope that people brought the big money for this car.
38:20300 out of the 300.
38:22Give me more mega.
38:23Out of the 3, 3, 3, 3, 3.
38:24And 40.
38:25Five down, not a 50.
38:26Five down, not a 100.
38:27Right now we're running up.
38:28You guys know we paid a hundred and a quarter for it, so it's going to have to get on
38:31up there.
38:32And 80.
38:33Five down, not a 90.
38:34Five down, not a 90.
38:35Five down, not a bar.
38:3595.
38:35Out of the 90.
38:36Five down, not a 100.
38:37One.
38:38110.
38:3930.
38:42And 40.
38:4340.
38:4340.
38:44140.
38:4540.
38:46140.
38:4740.
38:50140,000.
38:51Not running.
38:53We are in profit zone, but this car really should be bringing a whole lot more money.
38:57Opportunity's beating your door down, folks.
38:59This is an incredible car.
39:01It should be bringing close to 300,000.
39:03And we're stuck in the mud at 130.
39:04Sometimes we did a heck of a buy right there.
39:06140.
39:07140,000.
39:08Not a bit of a bar.
39:0940,000.
39:10135.
39:1040.
39:11I have 135 and 140,000.
39:13Not a 140,000.
39:15Not a 40,000.
39:15Now 40.
39:16Now five.
39:16You can divide it, divide it, but five.
39:17Last and final call.
39:18I was really hoping for a lot more money.
39:20145.
39:22145.
39:22150,000.
39:23Now you're on the back.
39:24150, 50, 50.
39:25Five, good job.
39:26I divide it, but five, five, five.
39:27Come on, people.
39:29I'd have bought it for 150 in the first place.
39:3116,000.
39:32Not an Austin.
39:32Last call.
39:34155.
39:34160.
39:35The hammer's up and a half.
39:37This car should have been in the 200 range.
39:39200 easy.
39:40155.
39:40And it is.
39:42So $160,000.
39:44Let's wait.
39:45110, 78, 19, 67, AAA, 4-backed, purple, black,
39:49or red.
39:49Carrier, red.
39:53It didn't do what it was supposed to do.
39:54I mean, it made money, so I'm happy with that.
39:56I mean, hopefully it'll pay my bar tab, but it didn't bring
39:59what it's supposed to.
39:59I was hoping that car might make 100 grand.
40:04So the silver lining, there's a ton of women here.
40:06There's a ton of beer.
40:07It's time to go out.
40:09I mean, there's a lot of fun to be had in Scottsdale, so I'm
40:10going to go hit the town and have a good time.
40:12Richard.
40:13Oh, beer assistant's here.
40:14Thank you, sir.
40:15Oh!
40:17This must be the green Mustang we were talking about.
40:19This is it.
40:19Wow.
40:20Richard kicked off his week by corralling a 72 Mustang Fastback.
40:24He and Aaron gave it a mini makeover with a fresh coat of paint, a new set of wheels,
40:29and a new interior.
40:30But Richard wasn't crazy with the new look.
40:33It looks like a Christmas tree in there.
40:35And the car is still waiting for its forever home.
40:39Richard hoped to regain his footing when he bought a rusty 69 Jag with Dennis.
40:43Whoa, whoa, whoa!
40:44But almost lost it again trying to bring it home.
40:47Okay, that's a problem, man.
40:48Luckily, an internet buyer plucked it from the scrap heap.
40:52But the biggest prize.
40:54That's friggin' cool.
40:55Was a Holy Grail 429 Mustang Boss.
40:59After a tune-up and a shine-up, the boss went on the block.
41:03Show!
41:03Bidding didn't quite go as hoped.
41:05But even after he split the week's profits with good buddy Dennis,
41:09Richard still had over 17,000 reasons to pop a cork.
41:13How do we do it?
41:14Just fall?
41:16We've never done that.
41:20Yeah!
41:21Snow angels.
41:23Now we've done everything there is to do in Minnesota.
41:26Minnesota.
41:27Including buying a Boss 429.
41:31It actually feels pretty good.
