00:00Welcome to Fabulous Fables, where little stories have big lessons.
00:04Today, we're going to share an ancient Greek story about a king who could turn everything he touched into gold.
00:12Is this magical ability a blessing or a curse? Let's find out.
00:18Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, there lived a greedy king named Midas.
00:23King Midas was incredibly rich and loved gold above all else in the world.
00:28Every day, he would spend hours in his enormous treasure room, admiring and counting his gold coins and jewelry.
00:37Despite having amassed a vast collection of gold, he wasn't satisfied. He wanted more.
00:42One morning, as he was taking a stroll in his beautiful garden, Midas came across a satyr, who was lost
00:50and weary from his journey.
00:52The satyr was a beloved companion of the Greek god Dionysus.
00:56So, the king welcomed him into his palace and provided him with a sumptuous feast.
01:02A few days later, Midas himself led the missing satyr back to Dionysus with the hope that he would be
01:08rewarded.
01:09True enough, Dionysus showed his gratitude by granting the king one wish.
01:14Midas knew exactly what he wanted, as he had been thinking about the reward along the way.
01:19I wish everything I touch would turn to gold, he exclaimed.
01:24Dionysus frowned and asked,
01:26Are you sure?
01:28That's a dangerous wish.
01:30Yes, I'm sure, Midas said firmly.
01:33If I have the gold in touch, I'll be the richest man in the world.
01:38Reluctantly, Dionysus granted the king his wish.
01:41From this moment onward, everything you touch will turn to pure gold.
01:45After acquiring the golden touch, Midas couldn't wait to try out his new power.
01:50As soon as he reached his palace, he ran straight into his chamber and placed his hand on a table.
01:56Instantly, the wooden table transformed into shiny, solid gold.
02:01Midas was overjoyed and thrilled with his newfound ability.
02:05He went on to touch a chair, and it turned to gold.
02:08He touched a vase and a flower, and they became gold.
02:12Laughing with delight, the king walked through his palace and touched everything he could.
02:18Soon, the entire palace was glittering with pure gold.
02:22This is amazing.
02:24He thought to himself,
02:26I'm the richest man in the world.
02:28Nonetheless, later in the day,
02:31Midas started noticing some problems with his golden touch.
02:35When he was eating dinner, he picked up a piece of bread, and it turned to gold.
02:40He tried to drink some wine, but both the cup and the wine changed into gold.
02:46The king's heart sank.
02:47He had all the riches he wanted, but he couldn't even eat or drink.
02:52However, the worst was yet to come.
02:55While he was deep in thought, Midas' adorable daughter Goldie came running toward him.
03:00She hugged him tightly, and he instinctively responded by wrapping his arms around her.
03:06But as soon as he touched her, she turned to gold.
03:10He was horrified.
03:11His beloved daughter had become a golden statue, standing frozen and lifeless before him.
03:18His eyes welled up with tears, and he cried out in anguish,
03:22What have I done?
03:23Now, he understood the dreadful consequences of his greed.
03:27He had thought the golden touch would make him happy,
03:30but it had taken away the things that truly mattered in his life.
03:34He lost his ability to eat and drink, and worst of all, his only daughter.
03:40Desperate to reverse his mistake,
03:43Midas went to Dionysus and begged him for help.
03:45Please, remove the golden touch from my hands.
03:49He pleaded, I no longer want this terrible gift.
03:52I see now that it's a curse.
03:54Didn't I warn you?
03:56Midas Dionysus said.
03:58But you wouldn't listen, because you were consumed by greed.
04:02Nevertheless, I'll give you another chance to make things right.
04:06Go to Pactolus River and wash your hands in the water.
04:10The god instructed Midas,
04:12The river will cleanse your hands of the golden touch.
04:15And all that you transformed into gold shall return to their original form.
04:20Without hesitation, Midas rushed to Pactolus River
04:23and immersed himself into the cool water.
04:26After scrubbing his hands for a while,
04:28he felt the golden touch leave him.
04:31When he arrived at his palace,
04:32he found that his precious daughter had been restored to life.
04:36Once again, her joyful laughter filled the halls.
04:40When she saw her father,
04:42little Goldie threw her arms around him.
04:44And this time, she remained his flesh and blood daughter,
04:48warm and affectionate as before.
04:50Oh, my dear daughter, the king cried,
04:53You're worth a thousand times more than all the gold in the world.
04:58Though he was freed from the curse of the golden touch,
05:01Midas learned a hard lesson about the perils of greed.
05:05From then on,
05:06he no longer cared for gold and riches.
05:08Instead, he found pleasure in the simple things in life
05:12and became content with what he had.
05:14The moral of King Midas and the golden touch
05:17is that excessive greed can cause us to lose things
05:20that we currently possess.
05:22Never be too greedy, kiddos.
