00:02Hi everyone, this is Eric Studer, Senior Design Producer at Airtight Games
00:06and it's my pleasure to present Murdered Soul Suspect
00:09a supernatural detective thriller that's a brand new blend on the action adventure genre
00:14In this collaboration with Airtight Games and Square Enix
00:17we ask the player to solve the hardest case of all, their own murder
00:28Detectives aren't supposed to get bloody knuckles
00:30but I've done a lot of things I wasn't supposed to do
00:35I lived through it all
00:36the beatdowns, the backstabbing
00:39disrespect most people wouldn't see in ten lifetimes
00:42and I never lost a fight
00:46until now
01:06Hey man, what are you doing?
01:14Hey!
01:15Move away from the body now!
01:18What the fuck is this?
01:22Hey, did you hear me?
01:37Hey, no, no, no, no!
01:58Oh shit!
02:01Oh shit!
02:03That's a...
02:03No, no, I...
02:05No, no, I...
02:06What?
02:08What?
02:09What?
02:10What?
02:10What?
02:10What?
02:23What?
02:25Get back here!
02:28I said
02:29Get back
02:44What you just saw was the untimely demise
02:47Of our protagonist Ronan O'Connor
02:49Ronan grew up on the streets
02:50And because of that he has a particular
02:52Perspective on the world
02:54He brings his experiences with him
02:56As he does his work as a detective
02:59With the Salem Police Department
03:01Great idea Baxter
03:03Tamper with the evidence
03:11Back up
03:12Who needs backup
03:15You shouldn't have tried to be one of us
03:21Man
03:22You were one dumb son of a bitch
03:29Sir
03:33Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, Baxter
03:34Hey, hey
03:35Just get back
03:37Taking them statements
03:39Come on
03:41Yeah
03:42I'm the stupid one
03:44This is not your scene, Lieutenant
03:47Just
03:48Pay your specs
03:49And move on, please
03:51Yeah
03:52Maybe it's not my scene
03:54But it is my case
03:57Tomorrow it'll be my case
04:00And the next day
04:02Until we catch him
04:05You do well to remember that, Sergeant
04:09Look, I'm just following Captain's orders here
04:12You know the procedure
04:13When a family member is
04:16Yeah, well
04:19Take all the time you need, LT
04:27Don't worry, brother
04:29Remember
04:31Ghosts never die
04:38Do me a favor, Codman
04:44Tell Julia I miss her
04:47She knows, Rex
04:50She knows
04:57I need to get my eyes on Stuart's notebook
05:01See what they found out
05:02Sir, did you see the man in the hood?
05:05Yes
05:06I don't know if she saw anything
05:08He killed that man in the street
05:12You don't need to be so secretive, boys
05:15We're on the same team
05:17I've been investigating this case for a long time
05:22I gotta see if they found any leads
05:24That I don't already know about
06:07Murder takes place in Salem, Massachusetts
06:11Salem has a very rich supernatural history
06:14Which we draw on extensively for our game
06:16It also has that New England, small town aesthetic
06:20That makes such a perfect setting
06:22For the events that occur to Ronan
06:24Over the course of the game
06:27The other stuff that you're going to see
06:28Are these sort of ethereal, glow-bluing vestiges
06:32These objects are part of the dusk
06:35The same limbo realm that Ronan now finds himself in
06:38When someone is murdered or suffers
06:41The energy that they give off
06:43Leaves an imprint in the dusk
06:44Which is represented in these living world objects
06:47Which you see around him
06:50Now, Ronan is capable of lots of things
06:53Like passing through most living world objects
06:56But dusk objects actually present blockers to Ronan
07:00So he cannot move beyond them easily
07:03In life, Ronan was an excellent detective
07:05And the first thing that you're going to see here
07:07Is his incredible observational abilities
07:10As I examine Ronan's corpse
07:12I know he was shot
07:13After he fell from a fourth story window
07:24Bingo
07:27I knew it
07:28However, I'm limited as a ghost
07:31A living world detective can actually interact with the evidence he has
07:35He can pick it up and turn it around in his fingertips
07:39The cigarette over here
07:41I can't pick that up
07:43Ronan has no ability to examine it
07:45In that sense, he's limited
07:46But as a ghost, he has so much more power
07:50Because unlike a living detective
07:53Ronan can possess human beings
07:56And while you can't directly control a human being while possessing them
07:59You can do things like look through their eyes
08:04I need to find information that could be relevant to my case
08:07So I look up and down his notepad
08:09And I see that he's written down that the victim was shot with his own gun
08:24But Ronan could do more than just look through the eyes of the people he's possessing
08:28Over here, I see two police officers
08:31Now, I can't hear what they're saying
08:33But if I possess Officer Robinson
08:36And listen through his ears
08:39What a night, huh, Robinson?
08:41Yeah
08:43Crazy
08:46Ronan, unbelievable
08:49I don't get it, what was he even doing here?
08:51You're asking for it
08:53A witness called in saying he saw the killer in their building
08:57Ronan responds, disregards orders for backup
09:01Next thing you know, the killer tried to see if he could make him sprout angel wings
09:05And then ba-ba-ba-ba-bam
09:07Seven to the chest
09:08Point blank
09:10You really have no idea when to quit, do you, Baxter?
09:13You ever take a look at those tattoos at his
09:15All that gangland prison crap
09:17He was more criminal than cop
09:20You live like a thief, you die like a thief
09:23He was still a badge, dickhead
09:28But Ronan could do still more with his ability to possess human beings
09:33Over here
09:35you can see that there's a witness
09:37who's trying to give a statement to a police officer
09:41if I influence her
09:44and use one of my own
09:45memories
09:47in this case my killer
09:48I can get her to think about that
09:51particular subject
09:53that man in the hood
09:56outside looking up
09:57at the top apartment on the fourth
09:59floor I think
10:01does that mean the killer came
10:03here for a reason
10:06so now I've got information about the witness
10:08she was too distraught to give information
10:11to the police officer
10:12but by reading her mind
10:14I now have information that the cops don't have access to
10:18so I've collected all the critical information
10:20on this crime scene
10:21and so now it's time to make a deduction
10:25in this particular version of the deduction
10:27I need to put the pieces in the right order
10:29so first I need to figure out
10:31what the cops know
10:32well I know a little bit about
10:35what the killer's M.O. was
10:37based on Stewart's notebook
10:38good
10:39and I know that they know a little bit
10:41about what happened here
10:42the events of the murder
10:43because of the conversation
10:47that worked
10:48but now I need to figure out
10:50what do I know
10:51that the cops don't know
10:52well it was the mind reading information
10:55I got from the witness
10:57outside
10:58looking up
10:59at the top apartment
11:00on the fourth floor I think
11:06the killer came here for a reason
11:10but what was it
11:19the apartment up there
11:20must have some clues
11:23except that's my way in
11:24and it's closed
11:27fantastic
11:30here's my chance
11:32I just need to follow
11:33Stewart into the building
11:35so I mentioned before
11:36that Ronan could pass through
11:37most living world objects
11:38and was blocked by vestiges
11:40but there's another thing
11:42that he's blocked by
11:43external walls of building
11:44I mentioned the
11:46sort of foundation
11:47in the supernatural
11:48that the town of Salem has
11:50well in our game
11:51the citizens
11:51christen all of their buildings
11:53what this does
11:55is it creates
11:55a supernatural barrier
11:56that prevents spirits
11:58from entering
11:58and exiting freely
12:00the only way Ronan
12:01can get in and out of buildings
12:03is by finding a breach
12:05in that barrier
12:06now officer Stewart
12:08ahead of me
12:08has opened that door
12:09creating the breach
12:11that I need
12:11to get inside
12:2310-4
12:2410-4
12:42so now I'm moving on
12:43to the second key component
12:44of our product
12:45which is exploration
12:46now as I mentioned
12:48there's no way
12:49to pass through exterior walls
12:51without having a breach
12:52in the supernatural barrier
12:54interior walls of buildings
12:55don't inhibit me
12:57the same way
12:59in fact
13:00almost every interior wall
13:02in the entire game
13:03Ronan can pass through freely
13:05this opens up entirely new ways
13:07to explore the environment
13:12so let's go ahead
13:13and move up to the second floor
13:14and continue the investigation
13:41and continue them
13:45and coming up to be
13:45and running
13:45because
13:45the city
14:13As you can see, Ronan has more power
14:15than even he is aware of.
14:18The other thing that that cinematic showed you is it hints at a side quest that will
14:23play a crucial role over the course of the game.
14:26Side quests are important in Murdered because it gives the player a chance to learn not only
14:30about the characters that inhabit the space and Ronan, but also about the sound of Salem.
14:35This graffiti here, if I reveal it, it will tell me more information about who that young
14:41girl was.
14:42Okay, so now I'm going to go over here and I'm going to malfunction this particular
14:46stone.
14:48Now, if it gets the attention of this young lady, which I believe it has, she's going
14:52to wander over and examine it and see what has happened.
14:55Now, in this particular case, it's a fun little bit of poltergeist, but later on in the game,
15:01that ability to, in a limited capacity, interact with the living world will play a crucial role
15:06in the puzzle solving of the game.
15:20The Dusk is not a safe place.
15:23What you see here is the first of several demon types that the player will encounter over
15:27the course of the game.
15:28of the game.
15:53Now, something I want to draw your attention to here is the fact that we want the combat in Murdered
15:58to be very intentional.
15:59We want the player to understand the combat space, build a strategy, and execute on it.
16:05The demons are incredibly strong, and if you attack them head-on, you will be defeated.
16:09So it's important to get behind them when they're unaware and rip them apart from the inside.
16:18This represents sort of the holistic design that we're taking with Murdered, both in the case of investigation and exploration
16:26and combat.
16:27We want it to be very intentional, very thoughtful.
16:30We want the player to constantly be engaged in the game and always be thinking about their next decisions.
16:36It's that sort of consistency of design that we're going for.
16:40Now, here you see that on the street we use possession to solve crimes, but now we use it in
16:45combat.
16:46We can defeat demons by hiding within living targets.
17:00In addition to possession, the player can also use pass-through to get behind the enemies,
17:05and hopefully get advantage of them when they're not expecting it.
17:35One more ability I want to show here is something that we're calling Teleport right now.
17:38It allows a player to silently sneak up behind enemies, and then attack them when they least expect it.
17:44It's normal.
17:55These three abilities are just the tip of the iceberg.
17:58When the product ships, there's going to be plenty of strategies for the player to use
18:02to build their own path through the combat spaces.
18:06A quick note about enemies.
18:08They used to be human ghosts, who have been slowly corrupted by their dusk over many, many years.
18:13Their last instinct is the belief that devouring other human souls,
18:17they can regain their own humanity.
18:42Damn it.
18:44My mom gave me that gun.
18:53and what the hell happened in here
19:02now on the street i showed you how possession can be used in a special way
19:07to gain advantage where a regular detective wouldn't be able to gain headway into a case
19:12the player can do more than that though here we have things called memory residues and by revealing
19:18them i actually bring a memory back into the investigation space now that it's here i can
19:25investigate it and draw information from it in this case it's obviously the killer here
19:31and he's looking for someone or something
19:47okay so let's continue on with the investigation over here to your left what you're gonna see
19:53is a baseball bat if i investigate this i knew it it's interesting because this is clearly a metal
20:02bat but it was bent and it was done recently because it's part of the crime scene
20:19damn this guy's strong
20:26all right so now i'm going to make my way over and continue investigating the apartment
20:30on the other side of this living room i'll see a broken window if i interact with this
20:39it's clear that this is the window i was killed from
20:41nice all right there we go
20:57i didn't stand a freaking chance
21:04we'll move into the bedroom now and continue the investigation
21:09you'll see that there's another memory residue here and if i reveal this one
21:12i can see that there's a witness
21:17now this witness is obviously watching the killer as he moves through the space
21:22she's frightened and so she's hiding from him hoping he doesn't see her
21:30bingo nice
21:40i can't believe there was a witness
21:46the case has just taken a turn but i don't know where the witness went
21:49so i need to keep investigating if i move over here i'll see a bulletin board
21:54and if i interact with a photo on it i'll get a psychic imprint from it
21:58and this will give me new insight
22:04father do you have anywhere that i can stay just for a little
22:07of course dear the church is always here now
22:09i think we have an old adage you can stay in for as long as you like
22:25so now i have all the critical pieces of information
22:28so let's complete this deduction
22:32now on the street i was asked to put the pieces together
22:35but in this version of the deduction i actually have to put the pieces of
22:39information in chronological order
22:43in this instance the eyewitness was here first
22:46at which point the killer showed up
22:49ronan arrived confronted him
22:51but was overpowered and thrown out of the window
22:54i knew it
23:22turned around you're under arrest
23:26i you're under arrest
23:56...
24:05...
24:06...
24:20Out the window.
24:22Gun me down in the street
24:24and you didn't even check for witnesses
24:28like you're untouchable
24:33that girl is my only lead
24:36I need to find her
24:38by piecing this all together
24:39I now know where the witness fled
24:41I need to chase her through this window
24:43hopefully I can still catch up with her
24:45find her at the church
24:47and maybe she'll lead me to my killer
24:49so I can bring him to justice
24:52what you just saw
24:53was the beginning of a very robust
24:55and a very interesting
24:57supernatural detective thriller
24:58that we think is both incredibly original
25:01and incredibly compelling
25:02thank you so much for watching the demo
25:05and I believe that we're going to have some really
25:07interesting stuff for you in the very near future
25:32and I'll show you
25:32you
25:32you
25:32you
25:32you
25:32Grazie a tutti
