00:00As a referendum kicks off across Italy, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney has her eyes on
00:05the country's justice system. Her government has put forward constitutional changes that would
00:10prevent judges and prosecutors from switching roles and overhaul the system's oversight body.
00:16Yes and no votes are polling neck and neck. The goal is to make the justice system more modern,
00:21more meritocratic, more autonomous, more accountable and above all free from all
00:25political influence. Italy's judiciary has a long history of clashes with the country's
00:31conservative prime ministers and Maloney's government has often attacked what they say
00:36are lenient rulings by Italian judges. The proposed reforms have provoked outcry from within the
00:42justice system, with many calling it a power grab by Maloney. Every Italian magistrate has a workload
00:49four times that of any European colleague. The real problem with justice in Italy is the slowness of
00:54child due to lack of resources. The far-right prime minister has closely tied her image to the yes
01:00vote. Now, ahead of next year's national elections, the results could act as a referendum on her
01:06leadership and government. If the no wins will have a weakening of Maloney's image, of Maloney's public
01:14image and probably the erosion of her aura of an invincible political leader. If the yes wins,
01:23on the contrary, I think we'll see a strengthening of Maloney's positioning.
01:29Losing a referendum has proved catastrophic for previous Italian prime ministers,
01:33most recently taking down Matteo Renzi's government in 2016.
01:37But Maloney has said she will not consider stepping down, no matter the results.
