00:00Tariffs were the backbone of Donald Trump's strategy to gain leverage in foreign and trade disputes.
00:06But the U.S. president was forced to scrap those struck down by the Supreme Court,
00:11specifically the ones imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
00:17In its opinion, the court cited the Constitution, writing,
00:22the Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes.
00:26The justices rejected the administration's argument that a warlike situation justified extraordinary presidential powers.
00:35The Supreme Court added,
00:37The United States, after all, is not at war with every nation in the world.
00:42The 6-3 decision included both conservative and liberal justices.
00:48Two of the six justices who rejected the tariffs were appointed by Donald Trump himself.
00:54Well, thank you very much for being here.
00:57The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing.
01:04And I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed,
01:09for not having the courage to do what's right for our country.
01:13In his executive order ending the tariffs,
01:16President Trump detailed the reason behind each one of them,
01:21including the war on illicit drugs,
01:23rebalancing the trade deficit,
01:25Russia's war in Ukraine,
01:27Iran's nuclear program.
01:29The U.S. president reimposed the global 10% tariff,
01:34citing Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act,
01:38which allows the president to impose up to 15% tariffs up to 150 days,
01:45with some exemptions.
01:47The question of what should be done with the $175 billion already collected
01:53with the now-defunct tariffs has yet to be answered.
01:57Donald Trump told reporters the issue could take years to litigate.
