00:07Forrest, oh! Quintus Forrest, give me back my legions!
00:21Welcome to the Battle of Teutoburg Forest.
00:24This is one of the historical battles in Rome 2, set in 9 AD
00:27and this is where the Romans come in for a bit of a shock at the hands of the barbarian
00:31warriors of Germania.
00:33I'll be playing as the Romans, trying desperately to shepherd my men through one of history's most amazing ambushes.
00:40The barbarian tribesmen have been lying in wait and they've hit us pretty hard right out of the gates.
00:45What you're seeing here is wave after wave of light troops smashing into column and retreating back into the forest.
00:51Basically they're trying to whittle us down over time.
00:53But this also illustrates just how sudden and devastating ambush battles can be in Rome 2.
01:06And the battle of war! Attach!
01:13The man who killed a standalone!
01:18Sent to fire!
01:20Battle of time!
01:21They're trying to kill me!
01:23Recharge!
01:24It's a huge assault sword!
01:26So what we're trying to do here is keep order and repel these early attacks.
01:30It's super important for the Romans to maintain formation and not get strung out.
01:34It's about strength in numbers.
01:36Here you can see just a few of the multitude of combat animations in Rome 2.
01:42Cavalry charges are a real high point as they punch through the enemy lines and send men flying through the
01:47air.
02:13The new tactical map lets us jump up to a kind of satellite view and see the whole battle at
02:17a glance.
02:18So we're going to grab these unengaged troops here and issue a move order to get them back in the
02:22game.
02:39So we're moving out of the initial ambush area and we've just a bit more resistance to punch through to
02:43get to the next area.
02:45As you can see here I'm using the unit camera a lot to lock my view to the legionaries and
02:49watch those charges up close.
02:51You get a real sense of that frontline experience and what your men are really going through.
03:11As we push out into this clearing you can get a sense of just how much work we're putting into
03:17these environments.
03:17The battlefields in Rome 2 feel so much more alive and real than anything we've made before.
03:22Tons of variation in vegetation and terrain and just a more epic sense of scale.
03:28So I'm getting the sense that the peace and quiet of this wooden glade isn't going to last.
03:33We need to work fast and get our men organised for whatever's about to happen next.
03:41At speed!
03:45Melee infinitely!
03:55So we've got archers up on the hills and another horde of angry barbarians wading through the swamps toward us,
04:01they're obviously building up for another big attack.
04:05Mordeus!
04:29So it looks like the Germans
04:30have brought some friends with them here.
04:32Now, warhounds aren't tough.
04:34They're easily dispatched, so they don't stick around very long.
04:37But they're a pretty unsettling first-strike weapon, and their running speed makes them
04:41great for running down routing troops.
04:50All through battle sequences such as this, you can hear lieutenants barking orders, soldiers
04:54are yelling in shock or surprise and generally bellowing to each other.
04:58These bits of dialogue just really help to put a human face on these thousands of soldiers
05:02and really bring the scene to life.
05:07So it's high time we turned our attention to these archers on the hill.
05:10Our light cavalry are waiting for orders, and they're the perfect counter against archers,
05:13so let's send them in.
05:23Alright, so our cavalry are in real trouble here.
05:26This line of spearmen charging out of the woods here is really bad news.
05:30We're just going to have to lead these guys to their fate.
05:57You, you're on your own!
05:59Horseman, with me!
06:01Double time!
06:02You, you're on your own!
06:34We really need to get these troops moving towards the forest exit
06:37but there's still more resistance to punch to before we get there.
06:40As you can see from the tactical map here
06:42there's a token defense of archers and melee troops.
06:44It's nothing too fearsome, you know, on their own, they're not that tough
06:47but this constant abrasion is really starting to wear at the Roman army.
07:03One of the formations that the Roman leageries can adopt in battle is the testudo or tortoise formation.
07:09When they place those massive rectangular scutum shields edge to edge
07:12they make a brilliant defense against arrow fire.
07:14When they get close enough to the enemy they'll bring their shields down and charge.
07:31We've managed to fight off waves of light units so far
07:33but this is where the barbarians deploy the heavy guns.
07:36Berserkers are seven foot walls of muscle.
07:38They fight hard and fast and in these kind of numbers they're going to punch through our troops like a
07:42wrecking ball.
07:43I'm actually going to sacrifice a couple of units here as a human shield
07:46to buy the rest of my army some precious time.
07:51Melee infantry at your command.
07:54Double time!
07:56Jupiter's just at the double!
08:03Melee infantry at your command!
08:04Engage!
08:06Romans!
08:06Melee forward!
08:08Melee troops!
08:09Go for best!
08:24Jupiter keeps at strength!
08:26Move out!
08:26Quick march!
08:31Rally men!
08:32We're nearly clear of the forest!
08:34OK, we're on the final run now and we're beginning to lose manpower in earnest.
08:37We've got to get these guys moving out of the fast.
08:40High front!
08:42No lynching!
08:43Show some help, please!
08:46Fire!
08:47Fire!
08:48Fire!
08:50Fire!
08:58Fire!
08:59Fire!
08:59Fire!
09:00Fire!
09:02Fire!
09:03Fire!
09:05As you can see, we are totally surrounded.
09:07No time for fancy tactics here.
09:09We've just got to try and pound through these final lines of defence or the berserkers are going
09:12to have us for dinner.
09:14Matlory to Rome!
09:17Melee infantry!
09:19Attack!
09:19Burns!
09:21Romans!
09:21Ready for duty!
09:24And over!
09:32Go!
09:33Get ready for fun!
09:33I'm ready for your power!
