00:30What we did is, first and foremost, is notice the battery door on the old controller is sort of polluting
00:35out a little bit.
00:36We decided to integrate that.
00:38That drove a lot of the internal design changes.
00:40Then what we did was, we worked really hard on the ergonomics of the device.
00:44We wanted to make sure that it was incredibly comfortable.
00:47The Xbox 360 controller, some consider to be the best one in gaming, you really had to focus on that
00:52to make it even better.
00:53How did you do that?
00:54So, we had hundreds of models, hundreds of user research studies, and essentially hours of gaming with models to make
01:03sure that people felt comfortable with it.
01:04And the changes that we came up with are, some are small, some are large, but on balance, they essentially
01:10make the life of the game much easier.
01:12For example, I'll give you a very tiny example.
01:13The old controller has screws underneath it.
01:16And our belief was, after eight hours or nine hours of gaming, gamers start complaining.
01:21It sort of bugs them.
01:22They can feel that back there.
01:22They can feel it.
01:23So, we came up with a design point that essentially is screwless.
01:26It's a huge deal.
01:27On the thumbsticks, what we said on the thumbsticks, we make them much more precise, so we reduce the death
01:32zones.
01:32But we also had a little bit of gimbal on each one of them.
01:35It's soft rubber, and the whole idea is it can have hours and hours of gaming, and it makes it
01:39just better.
01:40And the sticks are also, they seem to be a little bit smaller.
01:42Tiny bit smaller.
01:43Again, every change was validated by core gamers.
01:46They want to make sure that the core guys love it.
01:48One of the areas that we've heard a lot from gamers about is the D-pad.
01:52Zolfi, how have you made the Xbox One controller, the D-pad, even better?
01:56Yes, the D-pad, we received some feedback on.
01:59Our core gamers were not terribly pleased with the height of the D-pad, and over the last couple of
02:03years, we've been trying on 360.
02:05Now, when you say height, in terms of where it sits, you can see it's a little higher here.
02:08Yes, exactly.
02:09Notice it's slightly higher than the new one.
02:11So, the point of having the new D-pad, first of all, we changed the shape to make it a
02:15clean plus sign.
02:16Okay.
02:16And then we decided, if I may, open our device up.
02:20Now, you can't do this at home, but we have a special one here in the studio where you can
02:22look at that.
02:23So, the point here is, what we did is we made it closer to the motherboard.
02:27Okay.
02:27And what it essentially allows us to do is to reduce the travel time and get the nice, crisp force
02:33to fire.
02:34Click.
02:34Click.
02:34There's a little click in there, yeah.
02:35Yes.
02:36Tell me a little bit about the triggers.
02:37I hear there's haptic feedback.
02:39So, you see these big rumble motors that already exist.
02:41So, this is, a lot of people may not know, but this is what the rumble motors look like.
02:43It looks very similar in the Xbox 360, but that's the rumble motor.
02:46That's the rumble motor.
02:47And what we did is we took these motors, we shrunk them, and made a similar ones, tiny ones, instead
02:53of the trigger itself.
02:54And essentially what it does is it changes the way gamers perceive gaming.
02:57Okay.
02:58If you're shooting a sniper rifle, there's a very particular feel that you get and you should get.
03:04And it should be different from what a bazooka is.
03:06And essentially now we can get that to you.
03:09Once game developers start using this new feature, they can tell the difference between a rifle, a bazooka,
03:15your car skidding out of control, hitting gravel, the tiny motions of hitting brakes and getting ABS,
03:21kicking the pulsing on your brake trigger, you can get those feelings.
03:25So, in addition to the rumble, game developers, which they've had with 360, is with Xbox One,
03:29they're going to have the rumble as well as this additional feedback, as you said,
03:33where they can maybe give the kickback of a rifle or of a vehicle.
03:36That is exactly right.
03:37So, think about it.
03:38You're playing Forza.
03:38Yep.
03:39And you go through the curve and your car starts to skid out of control.
03:42Historically, you have this big rumble motor sort of shaking.
03:44Right.
03:44No, we'll give you an actual feeling if the right tire is slipping out of control,
03:48the right one will have a slightly more feeling.
03:51Wow.
03:51Think of it as fine motor control versus coarse motor control.
03:55Zolfi, tell me about this little micro USB port here on the back of the controller.
03:59Sure.
03:59Gamers tend to have two different controllers.
04:01The wired one that they use for gaming scenarios when they go for competitions
04:05and the wireless one, which is more casual.
04:09And we said, why should we have customers buy two of these?
04:12Let's give them the option of just buying one.
04:14So, this is a two-in-one controller, essentially.
04:16You got it.
04:16How does that work?
04:17The way it works is the moment you plug in the wire, essentially, the radio on the controller
04:21shuts down.
04:22And at that point, this controller transforms itself into being a truly wired controller.
04:27So, all the data now comes down the USB cord.
04:28And that's industry standard.
04:29It comes right down to your console.
04:31That is correct.
04:31So, it comes straight down to your console.
04:33It's industry standard.
04:34And you can use any USB cable that you want.
04:36Now, in terms of the wireless protocol, we also redefined it completely from scratch.
04:41There were two goals.
04:41First, increase the bandwidth of this wireless protocol significantly more.
04:4620x more than what we have right now.
04:47Okay.
04:47And the other one was to reduce latency.
04:51So, the moment you press the button for a fire button, the time it takes to go to your
04:55console and back, essentially, we reduce that.
04:58And you're dealing in milliseconds now.
04:59I mean, just really a finite, really small number.
05:02This is all milliseconds.
05:03Essentially, we improved about 20%.
05:04Now, tell us a little bit about the, of course, this is the Xbox button right there on the top.
05:09When you click that, you'll go to your dashboard.
05:10But around that, that's kind of, it's an infrared window, right?
05:14Yes.
05:14First of all, it's not just a button.
05:16Okay.
05:16Okay.
05:17The reason is, this is actually, it took a lot of processing to get this thing done.
05:22It is a light pipe.
05:24And on top of that, there's aluminum.
05:25And it's transparent aluminum.
05:27So, when you power this device on, you will see the light shine through metal.
05:30So, it's really makes you feel...
05:31But you still press this, so it's kind of a button.
05:33I mean, that's fancy.
05:34It sounds great.
05:35It's not fancy.
05:36It's awesome.
05:36It's redefined.
05:37Okay.
05:37But anyways, we've also added IR LEDs inside the front plate.
05:43And what that does for the device is, essentially, the system knows, because of Kinect, the camera,
05:48it knows, it sees the LEDs, and it knows the controller.
05:50Okay.
05:50So, during gameplay, if I decide to give you the controller, essentially, the profiles automatically shift.
05:55So, it's going to say, oh, it knows Major Nelson is right here.
05:58Major Nelson is now playing because he has the controller.
06:00Got it.
06:00And you don't have to do anything.
06:01You don't have to do anything.
06:02The system is not smart enough.
06:03It understands.
06:04It knows where the controller is.
06:05And then I can hand it back to you, and it goes right back to you.
06:07And it knows exactly who is.
06:08Wow.
06:09So, it's amazingness, again.
06:10Zulfi, tell us about the beautiful ABXY buttons.
06:14Yes.
06:14So, the ABXY buttons.
06:16Notice in the previous controller, what you had, you had the ABXY.
06:19They were sort of colored.
06:19They were very pretty.
06:20Don't get me wrong.
06:20But the new one, the X is floating in space.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Totally awesome.
06:25Makes it look really beautiful.
06:26I also noticed the buttons.
06:27They seem a little bolder and perhaps a little bit closer together.
06:30They've been optimized.
06:31But actually, we took great pains to make sure that the experience is not impacted in any way or form.
06:35Great.
06:36Period.
06:36Great.
06:36No questions.
06:37Hundreds and hundreds of tests were done with thousands and thousands of users to make sure that core gamers, when
06:42they touch this controller, it feels familiar.
06:45It should feel like it's from the same family.
06:47You should have the best of the old one.
06:49And in addition, you have additional functionality.
06:52Great.
06:53Well, Zulfi, I appreciate you got 40 brand new improvements from the Xbox 360 controller to the Xbox One controller.
07:00Thank you for stopping by and telling us a little bit about and kind of pulling it away to let
07:03us see the insides.
07:04Thanks, Zulfi.
07:05Thank you so much.
07:06Thank you so much.
07:06Thank you.
07:10Thank you so much.
07:10Grazie.
