00:00Come's it going, everybody? I'm Graham Boyd, Xbox Live's AC Bongos.
00:03And I'm Larry Herb, Xbox Live's Major Nelson.
00:05Now, there are a ton of improvements coming to Multiplayer on Xbox One.
00:08So, we asked Graham and Xbox Live's Eric Doty
00:11to chat Multiplayer with five Xbox Live team members.
00:16What are you personally excited for on Xbox One?
00:18With Multiplayer, we have Smart Match,
00:20which is our feature that allows you to be searching for a match
00:24while you're doing other things.
00:25We've also made big investments to our reputation system,
00:27which allows you to try to avoid the jerks and play higher quality games.
00:30We also have Skype now, which is a great way to communicate.
00:33You can communicate while you're playing a game.
00:34We also have our new GameDVR feature,
00:36where gold members get the ability to share their clips
00:38with the rest of the Xbox Live community.
00:40And some great things is we've taken a lot of the experiences on Xbox 360,
00:43like game saves, and just made that invisible to you on Xbox One.
00:46Users will never have to worry about roaming their game saves
00:48or where they're stored.
00:49It's all taken care of for you on Xbox One.
00:55I'm really excited about Smart Match.
00:56How is that going to improve the multiplayer experience?
00:59At Xbox One, we're looking at more like,
01:00we want to create the fun, right?
01:02We want to make sure that people are actually having a good,
01:03enjoyable, fun, social experience.
01:06And so it's not just, could I play with you?
01:07It's that, should I play with you?
01:09Am I going to have a good time with you?
01:10The best way for us to sort of make sure that people have the experience
01:13that they want and not have negative experiences with others
01:16is to make sure that they're playing the way that they want.
01:19And Smart Match is a way of sort of making sure that gamers are getting matched
01:22in ways that they want to get matched in.
01:24So tell us more about reputation and why it's so important to the Xbox Live service.
01:28Smart Match does a good job of helping kind of group people together
01:30with similar reputation scores.
01:32When your reputation changes, you start to get matched differently.
01:35And the folks that have good reputations, who are just there to have a good time,
01:38will actually be matched with folks that are more like them.
01:41On Xbox One, it's much simpler now that you can quickly just push the block button, for instance,
01:45and quickly just separate the communications from the player,
01:47quickly remove them from matchmaking in the future.
01:48The thing that's really interesting is when you click block,
01:50an element of feedback goes in the reputation system and starts scoring you, right?
01:54You get enough blocks and pretty soon your reputation is going to deteriorate.
01:57So it sounds like reputation is going to be more important than ever,
02:00and maintaining your reputation is going to be much more valuable to you as an Xbox Live member.
02:04You'll be able to improve your reputation as well, right?
02:07Oh, totally, yeah.
02:07I mean, one thing you can do definitely is play in the appropriate place.
02:12Not just quick match, but if I go into beginner, expect kind of beginner-type play.
02:16If I play in the veteran place, don't drive backwards down the track, play appropriately.
02:20The system just works.
02:25From a multiplayer gaming point of view, what does cloud really mean?
02:28One of the canonical examples of how cloud helps multiplayer gaming is the dedicated server model.
02:32In traditional peer-to-peer gaming, typically a game will anoint a host,
02:36and that console becomes the device which all traffic flows through.
02:39In a dedicated server model, we nominate a server as the host.
02:42So you get a much better, more rapid connection from a user's perspective into that game.
02:46So that also means there's far less opportunity for people to cheat as well, right?
02:50Exactly, because when you have a dedicated host, the host becomes the authority of the match.
02:54So that way, things that are accumulated, like statistics, all come from the host,
02:58and it doesn't provide the ability for a user inside that session
03:00to actually inject their own statistics.
03:02So I'm not going to be able to blame getting beaten on host advantage anymore?
03:06That's right.
03:07It's all going to be about how you play.
03:09Okay, every cloud is the best.
03:10So if you're into a very specific game type on a very specific game,
03:13you'll be able to find that game that you really want to get easier, right?
03:16That's right.
03:17So one of the really cool features of the Xbox Live Compute platform
03:19is this ability to spin up a server with exactly the parameters that you want to play.
03:24So if I want to play deathmatch mode on this particular map,
03:27that is now all configurable by the game developer on demand.
03:30Also, there's a couple games you've probably already heard of
03:32that have been using the Xbox Live cloud for multiplayer gaming.
03:36A big one is Titanfall, a game that's coming out.
03:40They're actually moving large portions of their game computation into the cloud.
03:44So a lot of AI, more non-player characters, larger hosted multiplayer sessions
03:48with larger numbers of players, really taking advantage of the power
03:51that they're getting up on the server and being able to do more locally on the client
03:55with improved graphics and improved computations locally
03:58because they're freeing up all that extra CPU and memory.
04:06Kim, can you give us a little insight into what you're working on?
04:09Absolutely.
04:09So one of the great features that we're introducing on Xbox One is Home Gold.
04:13So as an Xbox Live gamer on Xbox One, you'll have the ability to designate a home console
04:19and be able to share your digitally licensed games with other members of your household
04:24and friends that may visit your home.
04:26If you happen to be a Gold member, you'll also be able to share the benefits
04:31of your Gold membership with others in your home.
04:34So your family members, friends that may visit your home,
04:37when they're logged into that console, whether you're there or not,
04:39they will be able to access things like multiplayer and those types of benefits
04:45that you get as a Gold subscriber.
04:47So what happens if I'm roaming at a friend's house and logged in on their home console?
04:50Just sign in to any Xbox One anywhere and your home screen, your digital content,
04:56your friends list, your game saves, all of that just goes with you no matter where you go.
05:00Family members or friends that happen to be at your home on your home console
05:04will also continue to get those Gold benefits from that console.
05:08So Chad, I know that you work on Xbox Live achievements.
05:11Can you give us a little more background on what we can expect on Xbox One?
05:15First we started with 360 achievements.
05:17So when people on Xbox One log in, they'll see all their gamer score
05:19and all their current achievements there.
05:21The achievement system on Xbox One, it's decoupled from the game.
05:23So games can start offering new achievements every week, every month,
05:26as often as they want to.
05:28We also have this new concept called challenge achievements,
05:30which allow games to provide, you know, time-exclusive opportunities.
05:34There's also community challenges, where a game can challenge its community
05:37to drive a million miles, and if the community is able to do that,
05:40that will unlock great things for the community.
05:42So across the Xbox One experience, you'll see activity feeds of the challenges
05:47and achievements your friends have earned.
05:48You'll be able to see all the challenges and achievements that games are offering to you.
05:52All this is going to help games provide a great way to keep their players super engaged.
06:03I'll see you next time.
06:03See you next time.
