Transcript
00:05Oh, no.
00:12F***ing me. F***ing thing is half sunk.
00:15I mean, he ran out of the road.
00:17A real f***ing disaster.
00:20What the f***?
00:21Get that excavator over there and hurry the f*** up.
00:27On this gold rush, 24 nonstop hours with Klondike legend, Tony Beats.
00:36You've got to be kidding me.
00:38From training new recruits.
00:40What a f***ing job.
00:42To revealing another Beats family member.
00:45Okay, drag the f*** out there, plus.
00:47And cashing in on record gold prices.
00:51Well, that should be pretty much a million bucks.
01:18You're getting older, but you're not slowing down.
01:20At all.
01:21It is so.
01:22Maybe you slow down, you go backwards.
01:25There's something wrong with you, man.
01:27Tony's day starts normally enough with a visit from wife Minnie.
01:33If you would have told me that I would end up marrying that dude,
01:36I would have said, yeah, not in this lifetime.
01:38No, I don't think so.
01:40Yeah, but you're only one left.
01:41We had run out of girls in that town.
01:43You're lucky I was still available.
01:45You'd be selling...
01:46No one else picked you up, hell.
01:48No, no, no.
01:49You would be living with your mummy.
01:51Well, so?
01:52The world would have never known you.
01:56Tony is spending the season living at his massive 1,200-acre Indian River operation,
02:02where he's been sluicing nonstop for months,
02:05while Minnie stays 40 miles away at the family base, Paradise Hill,
02:12where son Mike runs the trample.
02:17I'll have to buy a helicopter, so he can hop back and forth.
02:21Sure, we'll get right on that.
02:23Do it while the gold price is high.
02:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:26$3,683.
02:28Well, that's doing okay, that gold price.
02:30What a time to be mining, aye?
02:33I still remember when we were selling it for $350.
02:36$300, $350.
02:39Those were skinny days, aye?
02:42Tony and Minnie came to the Yukon from the Netherlands over 40 years ago
02:47with just $300, and built their kingdom from the ground up.
02:52You know, I think it's time for breakfast.
02:54Want to go to the kitchen, chick?
02:55Yeah, I am.
02:56Let's go to the kitchen.
02:58There you go.
02:59Let's go do that.
03:01Hey.
03:05Hey, guys.
03:06Hey, guys.
03:07Hey, guys.
03:14You got to take lots of honey.
03:19Lots of sugar.
03:21So you'll be sweet all day.
03:23You know.
03:26What's your plan for the rest of the day?
03:28So Monika's going to bring up the A-50 today?
03:30Yeah.
03:31Do a rock rock.
03:33Well, that'll be good.
03:34It will be nice if we can smell some gold today.
03:37Yeah, see if we can get organized.
03:38And don't forget, you also have a visitor coming today, eh?
03:41Yeah, my brother is coming, isn't he?
03:43Yeah.
03:43Any other surprises?
03:45None that I know of.
03:46No?
03:46And if I would tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise.
03:49No, I'll...
03:50Well, I have to go back to the hill.
03:52Okay, let's do it.
03:53See you later.
03:53You got to go, man.
03:54Hi.
03:58Well, let's have a look.
04:00See what's all happened.
04:02Tony's first priority is to do his morning drive-bys in the Indian River Cuts.
04:09Do you even know how to drive?
04:13To get as much gold out of the ground as he can while the price is hot, Tony has built
04:20a 70-strong workforce comprised of mostly new employees.
04:26So right now, we're running a little over 30 rock trucks, and I honestly don't know how
04:31many hoes it is.
04:32You got to count them.
04:33Downtime on either wash plant costs Tony $8,000 an hour, so he needs to make sure his operators
04:41are firing on all cylinders.
04:45Yeah, we'll see what came, the commotion, people got here this morning.
05:10Hey, I didn't know what to do, where the f*** you come from.
05:14F***, idiot.
05:26F***, f***, f***.
05:45F***, f***, f***.
05:47Got some fat f*** around here.
05:52Maybe I'm maturing a little bit, and I'm getting more polite.
06:03Let's have a peek over the heads.
06:07This is still no f*** good, and it's still a f***, this all the f*** way down.
06:13Not worth a f***, so have a nice f*** day.
06:29You know, we have some real good people, right?
06:35Our core is very good, and some people, you just don't know.
06:38All they need is an opportunity.
06:43We're going to go see Austin here right now.
06:46So we'll just see.
06:50Rookie operator Austin LePage is opening more ground using the 100-ton 950 excavator, the biggest in Tony's fleet.
07:00It's a whole different experience running 950 compared to a 349.
07:09Not used to it at all.
07:13See?
07:15He misses half the bucket.
07:17What a f*** job.
07:19Be way better off doing it myself.
07:22Austin, do you copy?
07:24Austin, do you copy?
07:25Go ahead, Tony.
07:27Get the f*** up.
07:34Let's see if I can do this.
07:41Whoa, lady.
07:43Hit the brakes.
07:48There's lots of good people around.
07:50You just got to find the ones that you can work with.
07:53Once you have a bright one in the crowd, you teach them.
07:56You get them the way you want them.
07:58Okay, Austin.
08:07Why do you have a bucket?
08:10Why do you lay it in there like you have f***ing eggs in the c***?
08:14Still can't get over how much dirt fits in that bucket.
08:17Well, you'll get used to it.
08:20By loading full buckets instead of half, Tony is able to move an extra five tons per bucket,
08:27getting him down to the gold faster.
08:32They put the bucket full in there.
08:34Load the truck.
08:42I have so much fun doing this, pal.
08:44I have trouble walking the f*** away from this.
08:48Yeah.
08:52La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
08:54Okay, I'll go one more truck.
09:00I like this.
09:07okay nice you can see go to it go play all right let's go go go go let's go
09:22so it's going to take him a bit to catch on he just has to get used to the size
09:27of everything
09:28so as soon as he figures out where he's in with a bucket a couple loads he'll do this fine
09:36yeah it's quite the experience to get taught how to operate by tony beats
09:44it's quite the machine to run see he just figured it out it's all good
09:58tony have you got a copy yeah go ahead go ahead your guest has arrived okay i'll be right there

11:12they ran equipment and looked after the cows tony left for the klondike when he was 24 years old and
11:19class was 14. over a decade later class came to work for tony where he ran dozer bringing along his
11:27son cousin mike now class is a superintendent building custom excavators for big construction
11:35projects while cousin mike follows in his uncle's footsteps chasing gold how are you doing good good
11:43living the dream oh yeah pricey gold is good everything is good everything is running hopefully
11:49stays that way eh well if not take what you can yeah i always say you can always get more

12:01knew you were
12:01coming so i thought hey maybe i'll try to catch up yeah well i like mine still better than yours
12:07though but
12:07okay okay but you have more time too it only took one year yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah sure well
12:14you know
12:15hey you are the first one so you're a prototype oh i'm the second one so i'd be perfect yeah
12:20yeah yeah
12:22when do you ask mom anyway i gotta go finish my round yeah we should go visit mike so let's
12:29go and look
12:30i'm up see what the he's doing how's that okay
12:40michael d copy michael d copy that's the wrong radio tony well that shows how smart i am
12:50michael d copy michael d copy len d copy anybody copy at the plant
13:20hey there's a guy over there you may know why don't you come to camp and have a look
13:25i'll have a look sorry well he's not the prettiest
13:33thank you
13:45ah look what showed up
13:51the young fella hey hey kerel how are you good to see you yeah yeah been a while
13:58been a while yeah everything okay yeah yeah good how are you good yeah not too bad yeah have a
14:04good trip
14:05yeah yeah yeah yeah it's been a couple years yeah yeah quite a few years yeah lots has changed yeah
14:12yeah quite nice to see uh everything again that is so touching i almost said it
14:18yeah yeah yeah yeah so how are you get along with uh that uh old guy oh no but you
14:26just gotta put up with
14:28the right yeah yeah yeah yeah what do you got
14:33how's tony good cousin mike began working for tony four years ago
14:40we'll give him a press course how's that he started as an operator and quickly moved up the ranks
14:48that's all good so i don't have to send you back to your parents i don't think so you don't
14:53hang in
14:53there for a while now tony's nephew is foreman on the biggest claim and is one of his most trusted
15:01employees looking good rocks are gone firing back up so you want to make a rip up to the cap
15:08sure let's
15:08have a look okay jump in mike let's go
15:19so yeah last time you were here how many years ago was that oh it was 2011 i think so
15:25that's a
15:26couple days back huh yeah time goes quick though doesn't it hey and then michael is here of course
15:31and that's all working out great he's doing pretty much what you used to do here 15 years ago so
15:37yeah yeah nice to see him doing that yeah yeah well nice to see him work anyway my father like
15:43son
15:43well you never know right yeah he's of course not as good looking as us no oh yeah yeah is
15:51that why
15:51you guys are hiding it yeah no no no no we're not hiding nothing see since claus left the beat
16:00small
16:00family business has more than doubled in size exploding into an ever-expanding empire oh quite an
16:08operation you have going tony well what's happening yeah tony is opening up even more ground on the other
16:15side of his claim over two miles from where he did his rounds earlier in the day put that bucket
16:24of
16:24dirt and quit around over there you throw the in there yeah he hasn't done a full bucket yet so
16:32that's
16:32insane right yeah huh now i'm looking at these rock trucks for a second to see what the is happening
16:40because i'm not happy with this
16:48ah tony you know uh he's getting a little bit older uh i think a little bit my older also
16:58but he still can tell people what he wants uh done and how he wants to done
17:05hey you down there can you look at me for a second make sure that that don't happen again would
17:10you idiot you will get the message across yeah let's see you you should have went the other way you
17:26what was tony as a kid well he uh was my big brother we have 10 years of difference in
17:33between us
17:34with that big of difference and uh you look up to a bigger older brother we have a little bit
17:39of the
17:39same humor so yeah that was a fun with him to work on the farm anyway that's a little different
17:51than on
17:51the farm huh yeah quite a bit difference yeah something else i'm milking cows that beats the
17:59out of milking cows i can tell you that much yeah anyway yeah to do you gonna play with mike
18:05a bit
18:05in a dozer oh well yeah i would love to yeah maybe i have to show you guys how it's
18:10done
18:13have fun boys tony's 63 ton d10 dozers provide extra muscle to move overburden and open up more ground
18:24fast so here's the d10 a little newer than the one we ran 15 years ago still looks nice i'll
18:32show you
18:32the new controls okay yeah and then we'll each get on one and uh we'll do some pushing let's do
18:38it
18:41so this is forward and backwards yeah instead of that lever you had then and now you steer with
18:47the fingers looks like straight forward i'll give it a try michael all right let's do it yeah
18:59so uh in this direction michael yeah i saw that excavator sitting there loading trucks let's uh
19:07sit there side by side and put some dirt to that excavator okay let's do it
19:36well this brings back memories uh michael kind of nice of doing this again it's nice to be doing
19:44it together now yeah yeah yeah right wow kind of proud of you michael you all doing this
19:53i used to do it and now you do it
19:57yeah we didn't think that when uh when you were working here and i was 13 years old
20:03now i'm working here and you're here for a visit
20:09i think i'm still pushing more dirt than you do so again it is luck
20:21still to come i put on two bras expecting a bumpy ride
20:27what the
20:46that's a nice truck eh yeah uh shane we don't have more at paradise hill tony's youngest kids mike and
20:55monica have just taken delivery of a brand new 50 ton rock truck
21:01safe travels monica i'll miss you i'll be back tomorrow
21:06now monica must drive the 600 000 truck 40 miles to tony at the indian river
21:24the a50 is the only full suspension articulated hauler of its size making for a smooth ride
21:33kind of jealous kind of wish i could go drive to the indian
21:39there seems to be a bit of like rivalry between the indian river and the hill but you know what
21:44like there's just more happening out in the indian river right now and also
21:49where tony is is where the toys will be
21:54i'm usually pretty busy in the gold room it's kind of like where i'm stuck so it's really nice to
22:00be able to do something new because yeah it's been a hot minute since i got to do something so
22:05fun
22:11the skies are blue the leaves are green and i'm in the shiniest yellow truck in the whole territory
22:26i just get a bit hungry so now i put peanut butter and don't be shy right so this way
22:33you'll have it
22:33all over your face bingo and don get some jelly on there bingo then you slap the two together bingo
22:44life
22:49is good okay let's have a look see what the rest of them are doing
22:57hey tony tony do you copy yeah go ahead go ahead i'm just coming into the yard with your new
23:03toy
23:07anyway there she is 50 dollars going right through a bottle imagine that
23:14tony's new toy is the first of its kind in the klondike pretty nice looking unit
23:22the a50 is his biggest and most powerful truck yet with a seven ton increase in payload capacity
23:29and an extra 47 horsepower compared to tony's smaller a40 rock trucks
23:38so what do you think guys pretty nice fancy he's got an air ride seat i know didn't even feel
23:45half
23:45the bumps like i'm not even gonna lie i put on two bras expecting a bumpy ride i could have
23:52gone with
23:53a smart truck i didn't need anything i would almost run rock truck for a day oh yeah almost would
23:59do that
24:00really really so you think we should hold a pen of them today no let's make sure people don't
24:04this one up first okay we'll have to tell your mother we'll like it she'll go oh my god
24:11probably
24:14as you do more i mean you cannot keep driving the old at some point you have to renew your
24:20fleet
24:23if you don't do that you're going to be left behind there's no ifs or buts about it the bigger
24:27the
24:28truck the quicker you move your dirt it's all this to it okay gentlemen i'm done bye
24:47once i went for that d11 with that guy don't move behind them there you go we almost didn't make
24:53that
24:58so right now we're driving by kevin so we're gonna have a spy on that little just kind of watching
25:04if he's getting any royalties ready if he doesn't watch rocks i don't get no royalties
25:10three miles away from indian river tony's oldest son kevin is deep in his second year as a mine boss
25:19i mean we haven't seen much of kevin this year which is a good thing last year he was here
25:24every day
25:25bombing and stealing that's what you do you go get yourself a high spot and then you spy on it
25:39the plant is going as usual steady rocks kevin seems to be a lot more independent this year
25:47right now yeah they could really cash in the gold prices go up and up and up and they got
25:55a nice
25:55piece of ground so what a time to live what a time to start
26:04tony do you copy tony go ahead go ahead we've got a problem with a d6 by the entrance to
26:12camp
26:13okay what the okay i'll be there in a second then i'll come and have a look okay
26:43no look at that thing is half something nice me
26:50at tony beats indian river claim i mean what in the are you doing down there right
26:57a neighboring miner's settling pond has burst its dike and the road outside tony's claim has flooded
27:08now one of tony's d6 dozers has been blindly driven into a ditch and is stuck in the drink
27:20i mean he ran off the road because he couldn't see it because of the water instead of going right
27:25down the center he decided to take the side piece i guess at least the thing didn't sink with the
27:31guy in
27:32it because that would of course be a hell real disaster and what the get that excavator over there
27:38hurry the up to free the sunken dozer tony will use his 550 excavator to grab onto the blade of
27:48the 25
27:4915-ton d6 and pull it out
28:03okay let me rip this thing out
28:11so
28:18so
28:44I got it.
28:59You've got to be kidding me.
29:09For the f***ing sake!
29:13Tony has misread the road.
29:16Now, the 550 excavator is stuck and the inoperable D6 is blocking excess.
29:25Love you, Gabby.
29:27Yeah.
29:28If you can bring that D10.
29:30Okay.
29:31All right.
29:35Interesting day.
29:36D6 stuck in the water.
29:39Then Tony tried to pull it out.
29:41Got the excavator stuck, so...
29:43But at least we got the toys to get him out.
29:51If we can get it out without wrecking anything, then it'll be all good.
29:56First of all, this one out of the way.
29:58And then we'll come in with a D10 over here.
30:01And then we'll grab the f***er.
30:05Throw a cable on it.
30:07Rip it out.
30:10We'll hook up the D6 to the D10.
30:15And then we'll drag it out of here first.
30:17And we'll worry about the 550 excavator.
30:21Okay, drag the f***er out there, Klaus.
30:25First, Klaus must drag the D6 to the yard, where Tony's mechanics can assess the damage.
30:32Yeah, yeah, Klaus.
30:51Okay, Klaus, that's good.
30:53Well, that was easy.
30:54Nice to have toys.
30:56Drain some water out of it.
30:58And we'll be ready back for action, I guess.
31:01But there's got a bat, that's all.
31:03Okay, gentlemen, I want that cable back here.
31:06D6 out of the way.
31:08The Beetz brothers now need to rescue Tony's 63-ton 550 excavator.
31:16We're not out of the woods yet, but we'll get it.
31:18We'll get it.
31:19Nothing new.
31:21Okay, Klaus, as soon as they bring the cable in, Bingo, run in here.
31:24Would you please?
31:26Well, just pull the excavator out, put the cable on it, Bingo, give it a tug, done.
31:34Good, B120.
31:42All right, Klaus.
31:44Let's go!
31:45Let's go!
31:48Oh.
31:54I'm ready.
31:55Let's go!
31:57I'm good.
31:59I'm good at home.
32:03More bomb.
32:08Let's go like it.
32:22Good, guys.
32:24Good.
32:26There.
32:27All done and over with.
32:29So that's how little it takes to get things up.
32:36Coming up.
32:38Hey, Mike, you want to buy a rock truck or something?
32:41Yes.
32:41Hey, I'll go buy a rock truck with it.
32:43Done.
32:45Now what we do, we kiss and run the out of here or what?
33:05It is nice to have a good crew.
33:07The more people we get in trucks, that means that once in a while, she'll be able to get the
33:12hell out of here for a couple of days here.
33:14There, go to the other auction sale.
33:15I mean, I don't go fishing.
33:18Tony Beetz is heading to Paradise Hill.
33:22He has one last bit of business to take care of before a date night with Minnie.
33:29I have a buddy coming in.
33:30He's going to play with some gold for us.
33:33So anyway, let's go over there and see what he wants to do.
33:46I'm just going to get it in there and let it start heating, see if my tongs are ready.
33:50Yeah.
33:51Tony has called in longtime friend and gold smelter, Danny Johnson, to melt some of his gold into bars.
33:59If you do the service, pour that 75 in there.
34:04It's a practice he plans to make part of his growing operation, to make storing and moving gold easier.
34:12It'd be kind of cool to see you melting gold for the first time in real life.
34:16Be nice to have a bunch of bars laying around.
34:19It looks cooler too.
34:20Right?
34:20It's easy to move.
34:21But hey, Tony, if they're laying around, you can't spend them.
34:27I can still spend them, lady.
34:33So we've done this about 40 years ago, and ever since then, we've never done it.
34:39Are you going to lift the crucible out?
34:42We're going to pull it out and we're going to dump it in.
34:45But now that we're getting it bigger and bigger volumes, we like to melt it and keep some behind, put
34:51it in your safe, whatever.
34:52Instead of having a five-gallon bale in the safe, here's a couple bars of stock.
35:02Now we're just going to turn the heat up and let it cook.
35:07The temperature is around 1900 to melt gold, and we go up another maybe 100 degrees.
35:16Just so it's super liquid, and we can pour it.
35:24Because if you go at 1900 and it's liquid, by the time I lift it up and pour it, it's
35:28solid again.
35:28So we have to have the temperature up a little more.
35:32Let's just put it this way.
35:33Don't stick your hand in it.
35:41As one bar cools, another jar of gold is prepped for the crucible.
35:57We'll get all that off, and then we'll wire brush it.
36:01And it should all come up, look, it should all come up quite nice.
36:05I just want to see how heavy it is.
36:07That's cool.
36:22Yeah, you can pour that in there.
36:32Why not have it melted in the bar?
36:34Instead of walking around with this.
36:35It's simpler.
36:36Put it in your pocket.
36:37Bingo.
36:41Hey, Mike, you want to buy a rock truck or something?
36:44Yes.
36:44Hey, I'll go buy a rock truck later.
36:46Awesome.
36:46Done.
36:47See you later.
36:48This is about $350,000, 75 ounces.
36:52So, yeah, it won't get you the best rock truck, but it'll get you a rock truck.
36:57But, Mike, he ain't hurting for equipment, but just give him a couple bucks to play with.
37:01I mean, right?
37:05It was nice of Daniel to come up here, show us how it's done.
37:08I mean, I'm sure that it won't be the last time that we're going to melt some.
37:13There's nothing like having gold in your hand, because now you got a product to sell.
37:19Well, that should be pretty much a million bucks.
37:22There you go.
37:31After a long day on the mine, the king has a rare opportunity to unwind with his queen.
37:39My mini being on the hill, me being an Indian, we, eh, don't really see that mess of each other.
37:47So, today I had some time, decided I wanted to pick that girl up, and we'll go for a dinner
37:52or something nice.
37:53What the hell?
37:54You know?
37:55I guess we're going to have a date night or something.
38:01Hey, Missy, are you ready to go?
38:03Yep.
38:04Perfect.
38:05Let's go to town, as they say.
38:10Anyway, this is one of the few times you hit for town, or what?
38:13Well, we haven't done this at all, have we?
38:16We're supposed to go for supper with people, and it never happens, it seems like.
38:20Well, there's always something else, but, like...
38:22Yeah, there's always something happens.
38:23I mean, good thing for FaceTime, otherwise we'd never see each other.
38:27Oh.
38:27Well, it's true, though.
38:33Here we are.
38:34Yep.
38:41Young lady.
38:42Young man.
38:43There you go.
38:49Let's have a look what they got, huh?
38:52Food, probably.
38:53Lightning.
38:55Hey, how are you?
38:56You're doing well, yourself?
38:57Good.
38:58Good.
38:58Pretty good.
38:59I'll have the pork belly, please.
39:01Hey, could I get the stuffed mushrooms, please?
39:03You got it.
39:04Thanks, man.
39:06How was your visit with your brother?
39:08Yeah, no, no, no, it was all right.
39:09It was nice, show him around, whatever, yeah.
39:12It's kind of funny when you see the both of you together, because you are similar.
39:16Mm-hmm.
39:16You can tell you're from the same family, definitely.
39:19There's no mistake there, is it?
39:20There's no mistake there.
39:21But even with Cousin Mike, you can see it.
39:24The way you guys walk and the way sometimes you talk, and it's like, yeah, you can definitely
39:29tell you guys are all related.
39:32So, what do you say on a hot date?
39:34It's been a long time, eh?
39:36When we started dating, that was a long time ago, lady.
39:3978.
39:40So, that's 47 years ago.
39:42Did we get on the couch on the first date?
39:44What did we do?
39:44Yeah, we did.
39:49I mean, the first time I danced with you was when we got married.
39:52When we got married, yeah, pretty much.
39:54That was probably the last time.
39:58Yeah, yeah.
40:00Anyway, been a good run, eh?
40:01Well, it has been a good run, yeah.
40:04I think so.
40:05Yeah.
40:05All right, y'allings.
40:06Hey, perfect.
40:08Enjoy.
40:08I will.
40:10I mean, Kevin seems to be doing okay.
40:12Yeah, he seems to do.
40:14Well, this is one on his own.
40:17And we'll see what the other ones want to do, all right?
40:19If you look at the ground and the iron we're going to leave behind.
40:22Well, they're either going to have a hell of a sale, or they're going to go mining.
40:28At the end of the day, it's up to them.
40:30But, no, we don't be done very reasonable in life.
40:33No, we just nicely keep on mining.
40:35There's nothing, as long as you're capable and still enjoy, there's no reason to quit.
40:41I think we did okay in life.
40:45So, it was a hot day, that's it?
40:48I guess it is, you know.
40:49Well, pretty cool, all right?
40:51So, now what we do, we kiss and run the f*** out of here, or what?
40:56Any tongue with that?
40:58Cross the table.
40:59Well, eh...
41:02Huh?
41:03Huh?
41:03No.
41:07No?
41:07No.
41:08No.
41:09No.
41:09No.
41:09No.
41:09Okay, dear.
41:10Hmm?
41:11Yes, dear.
41:11Yes, dear.
41:12Yes, dear.
41:16People don't realize you're a f***y cat.
41:19Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:22We'll make out this one, all right?
