00:06Hello, you've caught me wearing
00:08my Metal Gear Solid 5
00:09Ground Zeroes jacket that I got when I went
00:11to Japan recently. I don't know if you heard
00:14about that, I only mentioned it a few times
00:15on Twitter. Here, here,
00:17here, here, here and here.
00:20More important than my online
00:22ego building however was the fact
00:24I played Metal Gear Solid 5
00:25Ground Zeroes for ages
00:27and interviewed my childhood heroes
00:29Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa
00:32which you can see elsewhere
00:33on the channel. Today is all about
00:35stealth though. A lot has been said
00:37about Metal Gear Solid 5's new
00:39open world leanings and how
00:41they affect the core mechanics of
00:43hiding in bushes and punching men
00:45from behind and for once
00:47the PR rhetoric hasn't been
00:49exaggerated. As a man who's
00:51obsessively played Metal Gear Solid
00:53games for over 15 years now
00:55the changes were immediately
00:57apparent. No longer can you perch
00:59at the end of a linear corridor,
01:01watch as an enemy traces a
01:03predetermined patrol route and then
01:05sneak past in time for tea and rations.
01:08There's no soliton
01:09radar, no camouflage
01:11index, no magic vibrating
01:13ring to notify you when a guard is
01:15coming. In short, Ground Zeroes
01:17takes away the stealth stabilizers
01:19and prods you into its brave new world
01:21like a tough loving parent.
01:23The new way to keep a bead on patrols
01:25is to whip out snakes' binoculars
01:27and tag them. This helps you get a
01:29mental image of where everyone is
01:30stationed, the terrain and your
01:32targets. If you try and play it like
01:34a traditional Metal Gear game however,
01:36i.e. sneak through really quietly
01:38and snap everyone's neck, you're
01:40going to come up against problems.
01:42You need to learn not to look at guards
01:44as obstacles, but as tools.
01:46Hold them up and they can give you
01:48information. Get one to call for backup
01:50and you've created a diversion.
01:52Tranquilize one and you've got a live
01:53khaki alternative to the old swimsuit
01:56magazines from previous games
01:57although i really hope those are still in the
01:59Phantom Pain. You can listen in on
02:02conversations too, using the information
02:03to mark ammo caches or important
02:05characters on your map. It's less
02:07about sneaking and more about getting
02:10creative with your environment and
02:12using it to manage where you want
02:13enemies to be. You could blow up a guard
02:16tower to corral enemies into a specific
02:18location, turn a truck into a
02:20makeshift bomb and jam a mission
02:22critical door open in the process.
02:24It's all about tinkering with your
02:26tool set and thinking outside the
02:28old model of get from point A to
02:30point B while avoiding enemy C.
02:32It's exciting, tense and immersive
02:35and you can try it for yourself when
02:36Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes
02:38hits PS3 and PS4 on March the 20th.

02:43and Yoji Shinkawa and for loads of
