02:04Give you the real insight on what we're really doing

02:08Kind of freely shared in the room
02:10I appreciated the openness and the candor of my team
02:13As they shared with me
02:14The kind of role I have up here
02:16But anyway hopefully

02:18I'll overachieve on that goal

02:23We're going to appreciate your feedback

02:29I think it's an incredible time to be here at GDC

02:38I was thinking about this year's GDC
02:40And what was exciting that I saw
02:43And I've lived in this industry for quite a while
02:46And I remember when I'd come to GDC
02:48And there seemed to be always kind of a meme
02:51That many people were chasing
02:53And over the last five, six years
02:56Those memes always seemed to be about
02:58Some form of monetization
03:00Where everybody's got to rush
03:01To do Facebook games
03:03Or mobile games
03:04Or free-to-play games
03:05One of the things that strikes me this year
03:08Which I think is great for our industry
03:09Is the fact that you see successful games
03:13Across all of these business models
03:15You don't see people having to run
03:17And try to chase
03:18And get their pitch together
03:19On why they have the next best free-to-play game
03:22You see success in download-to-own games
03:25You see successful games at retail
03:27You clearly see some hugely successful free-to-play games
03:29And mobile remains as strong as ever
03:32As an industry
03:33As people who want to create content
03:35That we want millions and millions of people
03:37Around the globe to love
03:38I think the diversity in the business models
03:41That are working so well
03:42In our industry right now
03:44Is a real strength
03:45And definitely as we think about our vision
03:47At Microsoft for gaming
03:48We're trying to embrace that
03:50We understand that flexibility
03:52For you with the games that you're building
03:55The tools and services
03:56That we can bring to bear there
03:58Is really the key
03:59How do we let you service your customers
04:02Stay in touch with your customers
04:04Easily get products to your customers
04:06As fast as you can
04:07That is critical
04:09And as some people know
04:11I spent most of my career
04:13Inside of the Xbox organization
04:15Running Microsoft Studios
04:16Our first-party organization
04:18And definitely as we've been looking
04:20At our Microsoft gaming vision
04:22I've come at it from the lens
04:23Of somebody who's trying to create content
04:25And trying to create content
04:27In today's world
04:28Where people pick up
04:29So many different devices
04:30To play games
04:31They want to engage with you
04:33As a community
04:34You the creator
04:35They want to know
04:36That you have a relationship
04:38With the customers
04:38Who are playing the games
04:40They want to know
04:41That their voices are heard
04:42They want to play
04:43While they're waiting in line
04:44For the bus
04:44They want to play
04:45When they're at school
04:46They want to play your games
04:47When they're sitting
04:48In front of their big TV
04:49With their headphones on
04:50Or whatever they're doing
04:51To just be completely immersed
04:53And blown away
04:53Or obviously something
04:55That's incredibly exciting
04:56At this year's E3
04:57The advent of VR
04:59And it seems coming at us
05:00From so many different ways
05:02A completely immersive
05:03Gaming experience
05:04VR
05:05And augmented reality
05:06As always
05:07The game industry
05:08Sits at the forefront
05:09Of many technological advances
05:12And in the areas of VR
05:13And AR
05:14We're doing it again
05:15And it's great to see
05:16All the work
05:17That these companies
05:18Are doing in that space
05:20So just in general
05:22I'm very upbeat
05:23About this year's GDC
05:24It seems like it's become
05:26More about the content
05:27More about the content
05:28Reaching those customers
05:30And hopefully
05:31With the work that we're doing
05:32We have a role to play there
05:35Before we get into
05:37The meat of what I'm going to say
05:39I had an announcement
05:41I wanted to make
05:42You know there's a game
05:44We just launched
05:46Called Screamride
05:47People might have seen it
05:48From our partners
05:49At Frontier
05:50That's doing well
05:51It's great to see
05:52The reaction to it
05:53Early on
05:53But we have a long
05:54Relationship with Frontier
05:57And as David Braben
05:58And us were talking
05:59About the future
06:00Of what we could do together
06:01They have a game
06:03That actually plays
06:03A real kind of important role
06:05In my world of gaming
06:06This game called
06:07Elite Dangerous
06:08That if people know
06:09Elite from the
06:10Original game
06:11That was a game
06:12That was pretty important
06:13And foundational to me
06:14To just falling in love
06:15With games
06:16And it's great
06:17To actually be able
06:18To stand here
06:18And announce a partnership

06:20To bring Elite Dangerous

06:25Exclusively on Xbox
06:27This summer
06:29It's a game
06:30That I'm incredibly

27:42to make sure that we're bringing the best games

30:30for independent developers on Xbox One.
30:32We've shipped a ton of ID at Xbox games on console.
30:36We have hundreds of games in development,
30:38and more than 1,000 independent studios
30:40have Xbox One development kits in hand.
30:43Today, we're really excited to announce
30:45that ID at Xbox is going to be expanding
30:47to help developers succeed on Xbox One and Windows 10,
30:51across all its endpoints,
30:52including PCs, phones and tablets,
30:55even HoloLens.
30:56We really think that Windows 10
30:58is going to be an awesome opportunity
30:59for independent developers,
31:01and we talked to some of them,
31:02and let's hear what they have to say.
31:04We've got a little video.
31:09I think the dream over the years
31:11for a lot of game developers
31:12is that we can actually release a game
31:15and engage multiple audiences.
31:17When Microsoft announced
31:18that they're going to actually support cross-play
31:20across all their devices,
31:21we've heard this before,
31:23and so I was a little bit skeptical,
31:25but then once we got our hands on Windows
31:27and the APIs and started to fool around with it,
31:30it was amazing to see that it really does work.
31:33We work with custom technology.
31:35It's our own engine,
31:36and all the APIs and all the plug-ins,
31:39everything, it's pretty seamless.
31:40I was sold on Windows 10
31:41the moment we realized
31:42that you can actually copy text
31:44from anywhere in Windows
31:45and paste it into a command prompt.
31:47That's a miracle in and of itself.
31:49From going to Xbox One to Windows 10,
31:51it's been amazing that I can just
31:54almost just switch the compiler
31:55to compile for Windows 10,
31:57and it works.
31:57It's a lot nicer than having to rewrite
31:59a majority of low-level code.
32:01Cross-play for Blu-Fish Years
32:03or Siegecraft Commander is huge
32:04because it's actually a game
32:06that plays really well
32:08across mouse and keyboard,
32:10gamepad, and even touchscreens.
32:11So what this does is allow us
32:14to give the game to everybody
32:16and for them to play, you know,
32:17multiplayer with each other.
32:18We've always wanted to allow players
32:20to buy a piece of content
32:22and play it wherever they are,
32:23whether it's on their phone,
32:25their Xbox One, or their PC.
32:28A normal porting process,
32:30you would expect, like,
32:31two weeks to four weeks
32:33just to get it up and going,
32:34and, I mean, just to say,
32:36hey, we had it up and running day one,
32:38and, you know, 24 hours later,
32:40we had it on the store.
32:41That's pretty shocking.
32:43Now we're thinking of it more holistically.
32:45We're taking the PC player
32:46and the console player
32:47and thinking about them together.
32:49Microsoft is the only company
32:50that's in that position
32:51to be able to do that
32:51because nobody else has
32:52a desktop gaming platform
32:54and a gaming console platform.
32:57It's really, it's a great time right now.
32:58It's exciting.
32:59It feels like something new is happening,
33:00so we're just grateful
33:01to be a part of it.
33:03Unifying all these experiences
33:04is going to be really important
33:06in the gaming space,
33:07and the fact that they're recognizing that
33:10and bringing that back to PC
33:12is really important
33:13for developers like us.

47:03only are great if you help us make them great.
47:06There's nothing we can do by ourselves
47:08that help build out the ecosystem that we're sharing.
47:11The talks, everybody will go through in more detail
47:14about DirectX, about the Universal App platform,
47:18about all the things that we've talked about,
47:20the Xbox Live SDK.
47:21And I encourage you to engage at a deep level with the speakers
47:24and afterwards ask them hard questions
47:27about the stuff that we're building,
47:28questions that you might have,
47:30maybe blind spots that we have.
47:31We are committed to this.
47:33We are committed to the gaming space.
47:35We're committed to building great content.
47:37and we're committed to making Windows 10
47:39the best windows that we've ever had
47:42for game developers and gamers.
47:44As the Xbox team, we're staking our reputation on it.
47:47We're putting our brand in front of it
47:48and we're building the tools out there
47:50that we hopefully will bring it to the expectation,
47:54the high expectations that both you have
47:55and the gamers have.
