01:309, Ludlow 12. Respond to silent alarm. Investigate possible 459 and 146 South Central.
01:37This is Ludlow Minor. We're rolling.
01:39Okay, Ludlow 12, 10, 4.
03:35Dr. Mitchfield, call your office.
03:38Dr. Mitchfield, call your office.
03:41They're setting up an alarm room to remove the bullet.
03:43He won't be running with the best of you for a few weeks, but he'll be all right.
03:47Can we see him?
03:48You two have reports to fill out on the shooting.
03:54I think one will be just fine, Lieutenant.
03:56We gave him a shot for the pain, we gave him a shot for the pain, we gave him a
03:58shot for the pain, so if he falls asleep on you.
03:59He's been known to be right back.
04:01We all have a shot for the pain, but I guess that you have to be on the other side
04:08of the muster desk to fully understand him.
04:19Does he know anything about the punk who shot him?
04:23Well, only that his name's Freddy Haggard.
04:25I don't think he took it all that personally.
04:28Well, I do.
04:29He walked out of state prison 48 hours ago.
04:33After serving a year and a half for armed robbery.
04:36Didn't, uh, waste any time, did he?
04:41He was one of the lazy ones, Webster.
04:43He waited two whole days before he went back to work.
04:45Two days, he overkills the police officer.
04:49Lieutenant, it's a little rough on him until the shot takes effect.
04:52I think maybe you better go on out.
04:53Oh, no.
04:56I saw it in a movie once.
05:02Twisting a horse's lip before he gave him a shot.
05:08It takes his mind off of trouble.
05:11You haven't been around long enough to know what troubles are, Webster.
05:14In a couple of years, they may be taking another one of those things out of you with Freddy Haggard's
05:18name on it.
05:20Maybe, uh, we should do something before that happens.
05:28If rats are running around biting people and infecting them, you put those rats out of reach, Webster.
05:34Hey, uh, why don't we kill Freddy?
05:43I mean, we, we should kill rats all the time.
05:50Why we kill Freddy?
05:56I'll tell you one out of ten.
06:00Because, uh, we're all Freddy's.
06:06We're all somebody's Freddy's.
06:10Make sure they take good care of him.
06:12Because I want him to be around long enough so that he can change the world.
06:22Yes?
06:30Lieutenant, it's two weeks.
06:32I know how long it's been, Officer Webster.
06:33You don't have to tell me.
06:34You're in here every other day reminding me.
06:36For times I'm, uh, washing dishes and doing the laundry for pastime.
06:40Now, what scares me is I'm beginning to look forward to it, which only means that I'm about to blow
06:45my mind so that if I could have a...
06:46Here, here.
06:48Take this.
06:48It's yours.
06:50Look it over.
06:51It's, uh, an assignment.
06:52Tell me if it interests you.
07:00Are you unhappy, Officer Webster?
07:02Is that why you're hanging around in here keeping me from my work?
07:05Me, sir?
07:05No, sir.
07:07Thank you very much, sir.
07:10What happened?
07:12I don't know.
07:12It was too easy.
07:13What did he get you?
07:14What's the assignment?
07:16Exchange program for penal and enforcement personnel.
07:19What's that all about?
07:21Well, if you told me, we'd walk out.
07:26Yes?
07:29You interested or not?
07:31Not.
07:32Uh, goodbye, Officer Webster.
07:33Oh, come on, Lieutenant.
07:34Going up to state prison to take classes with rookie guards?
07:37It's the assignment.
07:38Either you want it or you don't.
07:40Yeah, but for what reason?
07:41What good would it do me?
07:43What good would I do them?
07:44I don't know what good it would do them, Webster.
07:46Maybe nothing.
07:47But they think they're sitting on a powder keg up there, and they think retraining some of the guards may
07:52be the answer.
07:53It isn't too late.
07:55They want someone who's interested in their problems, someone I can spare, and I can spare you, Webster.
08:01Oh, thanks.
08:02Well, you're the one who keeps pestering me about going back to work.
08:05If you don't take the assignment, I'm going to have to pull a man off who was physically fit to
08:09do the job.
08:10Then who am I going to replace him with?
08:12It's a job, Webster.
08:14It's one that'll keep you from, uh, how did you put it?
08:17It's just, uh, blowing your mind.
08:24Get the chance.
08:25Write.
08:26You don't know how much your letters will mean to someone who can be spared.
08:51Hey, chap.
08:52How do you feel?
08:52You ready?
08:54Yeah.
08:54But not all that willing.
08:56Uh-huh.
08:57We're going to be fired going out with you today, but they're all accounted for but Phillips.
09:01He's come down with the flu, so they're holding him over at the infirmary.
09:04Well, he's done so now.
09:05All right, Sergeant, I'll use it.
09:06All set?
09:07Set.
09:09Danko, bring him out.
09:15Okay, line her up right over there.
09:18Here's your list of passengers, Sergeant.
09:22You're game of the way.
09:23Yeah.
09:26As I call your name, stand over there facing the door.
09:29Wilcox.
09:31Gordon.
09:33Hannerhan.
09:35Keane.
09:37Phillips.
09:40Where's Phillips?
09:41Oh, he's here.
09:45Let's go, Phillips.
09:47You've got plenty to have a day to dream at the castle.
09:49I'll hold it.
09:51It's going to take us a second to sign this one out.
09:54Hurry up, please.
09:54I'll get these on the bus.
09:56Single file, follow me.
10:02You, my friend, are crazy.
10:04Look, uh, Riker's sending me up there to learn, right?
10:08Well, do you know a better way to find out how a dude feels getting on a bus like that?
10:12Now, I want to know how Riker's going to feel.
10:14Well, tell me about it later, huh?
10:17Meanwhile, let's get me out to that bus, huh?
10:39Why isn't this one cuffed?
10:41Um, he's all right.
10:42No need to restrain him.
10:44Get on.
10:56Vicky, here's his bag.
11:12You want to sit?
11:14Put him up, Phillips.
11:16Using help?
11:22Now, if I were you, I'd learn to move a little faster when I get to the castle.
11:26If you don't, he just might never move again.
11:31Let's go.
11:33Let's go.
12:02Time can be short or it can be long.
12:04Depending on how you use it.
12:07I hope you choose to make the most of it.
12:10This is our home.
12:11And we want to make it a livable one for all of us.
12:15Sergeant Denson.
12:17Thank you, Ward.
12:22All right.
12:23I'm no speech maker.
12:26Everything I say to you, listen and remember.
12:29Because I'm here to try and help you survive in this sewer, not welcome you aboard.
12:32Now, some of you here for zip five, zip ten, some zip bit.
12:36Which means you serve anywhere from the time it takes to snap your fingers to all you can swallow.
12:40If I were you meant it, forget numbers.
12:42I'd look at it all as zip life.
12:44Any sentence at the castle can turn out to be a life sentence.
12:49All right, let's get on with it.
12:52There will be no talking.
12:57There will be no hands in pockets.
13:01There will always be absolute and immediate obedience to all given orders.
13:06You will do whatever you are told, when you are told.
13:08You will do nothing until told.
13:10All right, Sandler, let's go.
13:12All right, men.
13:16Let's move it out.
13:41Let's go.
13:50We saw it's done soon.
13:55Miller coming back to the cell tonight?
14:06All right.
14:21Well, it wouldn't have lasted much longer, Sergeant.
14:23Believe me, as soon as I would have hit that barbershop, you would have heard from me.
14:26I could put you up any charges for a stupid trick like this.
14:28Yeah, but what would you get from it?
14:33I'm sorry.
14:36I thought as long as I was coming up here in the exchange program, I might get some insight coming
14:40in like this.
14:41I thought that I could learn something.
14:42You'll learn what I want to teach you.
14:49Maybe you're right.
14:51Maybe you could learn something.
14:55You want to go through with this?
14:57I'm willing to listen to whatever you have in mind.
15:00Instead of taking quarters in the prison staff session, I'll put you in cell block B with the cons.
15:06You'll sleep with them, eat with them, live with them.
15:09If it's insight you're looking for, I'll give you a belly full.
15:13It's worth a try.
15:15Sandler!
15:19Checking out this out with the wardens to make it official.
15:21I know they know about it.
15:23Put them on cell block B.
15:24I asked the wardies to transferee.
15:26That'll keep your hair on.
15:28I'm putting them in a single cell.
15:30There's no point you being knifed in your sleep.
15:32I appreciate it.
15:34A lot of guys can do with fast talk.
15:35Look, the castle does something to a man, guards and cons alike.
15:39No one ever leaves you the same as he came.
15:41Well, then there's hope, Sergeant.
15:43You might even get to like yourself someday.
15:48There was a time I did like myself.
15:50Not too long ago, either.
15:52It took watching a couple of my best friends.
15:55Die in a riot.
15:57Stabbed 14 times.
15:58Thrown off a cell block, dear.
15:59For a reason I never even found out.
16:02That made a believe right of me, friend.
16:04You see Webster in the castle.
16:06A guard goes to sleep at night.
16:08Gratefully got through the day.
16:09And wondering the next morning if one of those cons
16:11will get to him before he goes off duty.
16:14Dunson, I already know that I'm lucky
16:16I'm only going to be here for four weeks.
16:17Don't kid yourself.
16:19You're in for a four-week zip bit.
16:21It can be zip life.
16:23The same as the rest of us.
16:25Okay.
16:26Let's go.
16:53Hey, you Webster.
16:56He's back.
16:57I told you they'd let him out tonight.
17:00Really, you mean him, man.
17:03That is some kind of person, man.
17:27Hey, come on in!
17:28Hey, come on in!
17:30Come on in!
17:31Hey, come on in!
17:34Come on in!
17:38Who wants to take his place?
17:45What was it like, Barney? Was it the same as when I was in there?
17:48Like inside Dunstan's head.
17:51Dark and empty. Cold and clammy.
17:55You can go back any time, Miller.
17:57I don't have to tell you where you can go.
18:03I don't have to tell you where you can go.
18:30Hey, Barney. Barney, I got it.
18:33I got the gun.
18:35What?
18:37Hey, listen, Marvin, I don't need any more problems. I got enough problems.
18:41Stash it, throw it away, whatever. Just get rid of it. Don't tell me about it.
18:43Okay.
18:47My man's back!
18:52Hey, Marvin.
18:55What happened to him? Where was he?
18:58What?
18:59Where was he?
19:01Well, Barney's been vacationing at the Castle Hilton.
19:05Castle Hilton?
19:14Solitary, man.
19:16Solitary.
19:22I spent a 30-day bit down there once.
19:26When I come back is when they start to call me Crazy Marvin.
19:31I went eight.
19:36It was tough, man.
19:39It's tough.
19:41Why'd they send him solitary?
19:43For nothing. For nothing.
19:45Nothing.
19:45Nothing.
19:47Godunson hates him.
19:49That's not the only reason, though.
19:52You'll find out.
19:55It'll happen to you.
19:58They'll look for a reason to stick it to you.
20:02They want to.
20:05See the hacks.
20:06They know that Khan just spends a couple days down there.
20:11He'll do just about anything so that he don't have to go back.
20:16I mean, let me tell you something.
20:19You'd rather die than go back.
20:42Really good, babe.
20:44Mm-hmm.
20:44Mm.
20:45Yeah, really good.
20:47Yeah.
20:49Not too hungry myself.
20:52Oh.
20:57You should have heard Riker when the warden told him
20:59that Terry was living on the cell block with the convicts.
21:02He almost crushed that boiled egg he was peeling.
21:04You know, we should have stopped him.
21:07Going up the way he did,
21:08we should have known he was going to pull another crazy stunt.
21:10Come on, we're carrying on like he was on death row.
21:13That's two pounds of ground round.
21:14Tomatoes at 66 cents a pound.
21:15That's good wine.
21:16Come on, let's get at it.
21:17Okay.
21:18Give me some.
21:18More chili, please.
21:20Wine?
21:20Yeah.
21:21How much?
21:23Two?
21:23Two's good.
21:26Mm-hmm.
21:32Mm.
21:35Mm.
21:38Mm.
21:50I wonder if you could put chili in the freezer.
22:08I wonder if you could put chili in the freezer.
22:10Help!
22:13Guard!
22:14Help!
22:17Help!
22:18Help!
22:19I'm somewhere else!
22:20Leave him alone.
22:21You'll get used to it.
22:23Leave him alone!
22:24Guard!
22:25Why are you doing that?
22:26Maybe he's having a nightmare in there, isn't he?
22:29Help!
22:29Help!
22:30Or a vendetta.
22:31Or maybe just killing somebody for the fun of it.
22:34Stay in these cages long enough,
22:36you'd do anything to stop the border.

26:20No, man, you're the pig that shot me.
26:22I'm a police officer.
26:23I'm here on an exchange program. You can verify that with Dunstan if you want to.
26:26Like you said, check it out.
26:28And what's the difference, boys? Let me waste some time.
26:29Cooley!
26:34Barney! Barney, you better get in here!
26:36Whatever he is, whoever he is, he's a hostage now. Take them all in the back!
26:46Barney, they're running around out there. I've seen them. They're running low with scatterguns. Maybe four or five of them.
26:57Give me that. You're wasting what we got.
27:01What are we gonna do, Barney?
27:07Maybe you'll die today. Maybe we all will.
27:13Come on.
27:16Thank all killers. I just got a call.
27:18It's trouble at the state prison. The cons have taken over the kitchen.
27:21They're holding hostages. Wentz is one of them.
27:23Finish the reports later.
27:30You men, open the doors and let the hostages come out first.
27:36Then follow them with your hands empty and above your heads.
27:44You're only making it worse for yourselves.
27:46The sooner you come out, the less troubles you'll have.
27:55You haven't got much time to decide.
27:57I want those hostages alive.
28:00But I'm willing to come in and get them if I have to.
28:03Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!
28:06Listen to what the man's got to say!
28:08I'll give you men one hour to come to your senses.
28:12You can walk out any time before that.
28:15If by then you're still in there,
28:18we'll come in and get you.
28:20One hour.
28:21That's all.
28:39It was a long time, boys.
28:41Work out with your tail between your legs.
28:43Yeah, and what do we do?
28:44You'll all get medals.
28:48What is this?
28:51When we kill them, we do it for a reason.
28:53Not like this.
28:54Not to use them up for nothing.
28:56What is it with you guys, huh?
28:57Some kind of a game?
28:58We're dead meat in here, all of us.
29:00Unless we use our heads.
29:02Now, we got one hour to figure out something
29:04before they come in here for us.
29:06And they'll be here, Mar.
29:07You creep.
29:08Shut up!
29:09Before I feed you to them piece by piece.
29:12You haven't got a chance in hell to get out of here
29:14if that's what any of you are thinking about.
29:16That way, there's no way any of you
29:18will get to see the other side of the walls.
29:22Look, man.
29:24You got a chance here to do something for yourselves.
29:27To maybe change this joint.
29:29To make it at least livable.
29:31What are you talking about, man?
29:33I mean, what do you want us to do?
29:34You want us to bargain with them?
29:36For what?
29:37For what?
29:38For your life, man.
29:40For your life.
29:43What do you call existing in this place living, huh?
29:46Yeah.
29:47Right on, man.
29:48Right on!
29:49We're gonna live like men or die like lions!
29:54Now, we got one hour to make a list.
29:57What if they turn us down?
29:59Suppose they don't want a deal.
30:02Then that's when we use them.
30:03What about me, Miller?
30:05I spent seven years in this rat hole.
30:08In less than six months, I'm gonna be out.
30:11I think it's a fair question.
30:13I can dig it, Crane.
30:15In one hour, you can walk out that door.
30:16Anybody else who wants to walk?
30:19I want guys in here that are willing to go through
30:21to the end of the line.
30:22Because it means something to them.
30:24Because it pays for them.
30:26If you don't have the fare,
30:29you can get off at the next stop.
30:56There, take cover.
31:00I'm Lieutenant Riker, SCPD.
31:02They got one of my men in there.
31:03Yes, Webster.
31:04I know.
31:07Is there any word if they harmed the hostages?
31:09Right now, I don't know who or what's living in there.
31:13We'll find out soon enough.
31:18You men there.
31:21You've got two more minutes to come out.
31:26I want you out of there with your hands up and empty.
31:32This will be your only warning.
31:36Hey, Webster.
31:38I want to talk to you.
31:44I want you to deliver a message to the warden for me.
31:47Why me?
31:48Why not?
31:49Who else?
31:50One of the cons that walks out here in a minute?
31:52What kind of respect do you think he'll get from the warden?
31:54If he gets to talk to him at all.
31:56And what are you complaining about, Webster?
31:59Webster, I'm giving you a chance to walk out of here.
32:03What's the message?
32:05I wrote up a list of demands.
32:07There's more, but I didn't have time to put them on the paper.
32:09Now, if we don't get what we want,
32:11they're going to have to come in here and get us.
32:13And it'll cost.
32:20What about the hostages?
32:23If you let one two go, it'll show good faith.
32:24It's not us that has to show anything, man.
32:26It's them out there that's got to prove to us cons.
32:29We're going to bleed in this thing, not them.
32:31And we're ready to bleed.
32:32You tell them that.
32:33And you tell them that we're going to take as many of them with us as we can.
32:36Starting with the hostages.
32:39All right, all you cats that want to split, do it now.
32:58Thanks.
32:59Let's go.
33:29Let's go.
33:59If I deal with them here for five hostages, they'll be dealing at every prison in the state.
34:04If it works at one institution, every convict in every prison across the country will figure it can work for
34:09him.
34:09Then there's 500 hostages.
34:11No, I won't do it.
34:13You've got to get together with Miller.
34:15You've got to talk with him.
34:16It won't work, Webster.
34:17We'll just be wasting time.
34:19Well, it's better than wasting lives.
34:21Look, let me go back in there and tell him that you're willing to talk with him, that you're willing
34:25to listen.
34:27What do you have to lose?
34:28You're not going back in there, Webster.
34:30The warden can use the bullhorn if he decides he's going to go along with you.
34:33Use the horn, you've got nothing.
34:35Why should they believe you?
34:36But if I walk back in there, they just might figure that I'm playing it straight with them.
34:40Now, come on.
34:40Five minutes.
34:41Five minutes for five lives.
34:44Let me tell them that you'll meet with them and talk.
34:46You and Miller.
34:46You might not get another chance to walk out of there, Webster.
34:49You know that.
34:56All right.
34:57You've got your five minutes.
34:59Tell Miller I'll talk with him.
35:00But that's all.
35:09That's a good man you've got there, Lieutenant.
35:12Yeah, the only trouble is trying to keep him alive.
35:20I'm in the room for the kitchen and wait for my orders.
35:23The kitchen.
35:26Call Warden Mason.
35:28Call him and try to set up a meeting.
35:31I don't need talk.
35:33I need signed papers from him promising to change things in this place.
35:36And if he won't or can't give it to us, then get the governor down here.
35:39The governor?
35:41You'll be dead before he even knows you're alive.
35:43Oh, shut up, Dunson.
35:44What are you afraid of, Webster?
35:47We're not going to kill anybody.
35:49Because there's nowhere for them to run if they do.
35:51If they weren't all cowards, it wouldn't be in the castle to begin with.
35:54You're in here, Dunson, you pig.
35:55And from the life I see you living, you're no better than we are.
35:58There's one big difference.
36:00I got the key that locks the cage you live in, boy.
36:04Call him off, Miller.
36:05Call him off.
36:07You let them kill him, and you give Mason every excuse he needs to bring that army in here and
36:11tear you apart.
36:13Now, pick up that phone.
36:14That's all you got to do.
36:15Give yourself at least that chance.
36:21Now, you're wasting time, man.
36:24All right, hold him here.
36:28Come on.
36:33You're a crazy, Dunson.
36:36I don't know if you want to live or die, and I almost don't care.
36:39Wake up.
36:42The only reason I want to be killed is because of fear.
36:45Fear of me.
36:46Fear of the system.
36:48I'm the one keeping them alive.
36:50You take fear out of the castle because of death and chaos.
36:54Hey, Webster.
36:57If you get a chance, you kill him.
36:59If you get a chance, it's a war.
37:00You kill him.
37:08You talk to me.
37:10Tell him I want to meet.
37:14Go see what's happening.
37:15You watch it.
37:25You got a match?
37:28All alone's a life.
37:46We want better food and fruit every day, and a Spanish-language library for those cons who need it.
37:51Keep the sex offenders and homosexuals away from the young kids that come into this place.
37:57And get us some guards with some intelligence and human understanding that won't be at war with us all the
38:02time.
38:03We don't want any more censorship of letters and newspapers.
38:06We want a modern educational program.
38:09Cement up the castle, Hilton.
38:10No more solitary like that.
38:13We want a man who's in the Japanese.
38:16We want סenzor, Hilton.
38:19It's all right here on the bridge.
38:26I'm sorry.
38:28I'm sorry.
38:29You're not in my hometown.
38:30We mean, it's all right now.

40:25I thought I could get us out of it. I really did.
40:31Wes...
40:34The people outside don't understand.

40:40And you've seen what's gone on.
40:45You know what should be done.
40:50Do me a favor.
40:52What?
40:54Don't let them kill all of us off.
40:56Before something's done.
