The presence of Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) M. Kulasegaran from DAP at the proceedings for activist Arun Dorasamy, who was recently charged in court has raised public concern over the integrity of the legal system, say four party leaders.

In a joint statement, DAP central executive committee members Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Young Syefura Othman and Syahredzan Johan, together with Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid, said they respected the deputy minister as a party veteran but disagreed with his decision to meet Arun at court during the proceedings.

00:02Four DAP leaders have criticized Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Law
00:07and Institutional Reforms, M. Kulasigaran, over his presence in court when activist Arun
00:14Doraissami was charged at the Jawi Magistrates' Court in Nibong, Tebal, Penang, on Tuesday.
00:20In a joint statement, DAP Central Executive Committee members Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali,
00:26young Shefura Othman and Shahredzan Johan, together with Bukit Bendera MP Shirlina Abdul Rashid,
00:33said they respected the Deputy Minister as a party veteran but disagreed with his decision to meet Arun
00:39at court during the proceedings. They said the move had triggered public debate and heightened
00:44scrutiny given his role in overseeing legal and institutional reforms. The leaders stressed that
00:50justice must not only be carried out but also be seen to be carried out, adding that his position
00:57requires a higher level of sensitivity to public perception. They also clarified that there was no
01:04party directive on the matter and that any act of solidarity towards Arun Doraissami does not
01:10represent DAP's official stance. They said the party should adopt a balanced approach
01:16by upholding the principle of innocent until proven guilty, while avoiding any actions that could
01:22create perceptions of interference or bias. Earlier, Kulasegaran denied being present in court
01:29during the proceedings at the Jawi Magistrates' Court in Penang. He said he had only briefly met Arun
01:36outside the court complex to advise him to trust the legal process.
01:46There was a problem.
