00:00Hey everyone, welcome back to PlayStation Livecast here, joined by Justin, Klaus Lingelit, and Alex.
00:06We're going to be here and we're going to talk about Feia.
00:08Were you saying this right?
00:09You are, yeah.
00:10Woo!
00:10Kind of.
00:12Feia.
00:12Yeah, I was trying to be nice here.
00:15We've been talking about this before.
00:17Some people haven't heard fee, some people say fa.
00:19I was like, no, no, it's fey.
00:20It's got to be fey, right?
00:21Well, we're both wrong.
00:22Well, it's Swedish.
00:24It's not easy.
00:24Do you want to say the way you say it?
00:26Feia.
00:26Feia.
00:27Yeah, that was really good.
00:28All right, I'm getting the hang of it.
00:30So tell us a little bit about how this game came to be.
00:34How it came to be?
00:35Well, it's actually a very old project.
00:37I mean, we had the studio for a long time.
00:40It's called Zoink.
00:40We're in Sweden.
00:41And me and Andreas was talking about the game like five years ago that he really wanted to do something
00:48that was relaxing to play.
00:50And I always wanted to do a 3D game, a full 3D game again.
00:53We haven't done that for a while.
00:54And I thought, if we're going to do it, we're going to find a style that we can work with
00:58that's really amazing, that looks interesting.
01:00And so we started prototyping all these different things.
01:04And just one thing led to another.
01:06And we worked on it a little bit here, a little bit there, and it sort of moved forward.
01:08And then, yeah, then one day we pitched it to EA and everything went really well.
01:14Wonderful.
01:15So we actually have some live gameplay that Alex is going to be sharing with us.
01:18So why don't we go ahead and get that started and talk us through what's going on?
01:21It's going to be our world premiere.
01:23Yeah.
01:24Let's see if it starts up.
01:26Okay.
01:28That's a good start.
01:31It's going to take a minute to load up here.
01:34So, Justin, what were your first thoughts about seeing it?
01:37Well, this was announced during E3, right?
01:40That's true.
01:41Yeah, at EA Play, I think.
01:42Yeah.
01:42Yeah, and this is one of the big highlights that people took out of that.
01:45There were so many big things that happened there.
01:47And one of the things I saw people talking the most about coming out of it was Thea.
01:52Yeah.
01:52I think I got it.
01:54What was your reaction to that?
01:56What did that feel like to be up with all these titans on the stage there
02:00and for your game to be what people took away from it?
02:03Well, I mean, also the thing was I got to know about that I had to go up on stage
02:07like three weeks before or something like that.
02:09It's like, you should go up and do that.
02:10And it's like, wow, really?
02:13Yeah, I mean, here is the game.
02:15And I just want to point out that the game, this is actually kind of how the game starts
02:20in the final version, too.
02:22It's really about, the game is really about exploration.
02:24It's very important to us that it's just dive into this world
02:27that you don't really know what it is.
02:28You don't really know who you are, actually.
02:30And you just sort of wake up there.
02:32And this is the character called Faye.
02:34Now I decided to follow this little deer here.
02:37What kind of character is it?
02:38Because I've heard different things.
02:39A little woodland creature.
02:40Yeah, I'm going to explain it.
02:41Because basically, Faye actually means fairy in Swedish.
02:45And I thought I want to pick something that just felt really sort of Nordic
02:49and weird and then, you know, mystical.
02:51There's been a lot of discussion about that.
02:52Like, is it Iron?
02:53What does it mean?
02:54Yeah.
02:55It is the character.
02:56And it is this little character that, just stop a little bit there.
03:00I'm going to show you.
03:02But basically, the character uses this song in the game,
03:06which is really amazing, that you can, with the analog trigger,
03:10you actually control the way you sing in the game.
03:12Oh.
03:12Yeah.
03:13So really, if you just touch it a little bit.
03:16It's cute like this.
03:17I love it.
03:18Yeah.
03:19You do it all the way.
03:21Yeah.
03:21Do people in your office keep just doing that?
03:23You're just going like, ah?
03:24Yeah, yeah.
03:24We have actual voice actors coming in, and there's like weird sounds in the music studio.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Every day, for a while, it's like people screaming and screeching and howling.
03:33There's not a lot of dialogue in it, but you do communicate with the environment
03:37through all these different cries.
03:38Yeah.
03:39And you can see, while Alexander is talking to the environment,
03:42you can see how it sort of reacts.
03:43Like every plant that you see will actually sort of move and react to this.
03:49And it comes almost like a little musical instrument in a way.
03:53and you can actually talk to any kind of animal you find in the world
03:57and communicate with them through this kind of weird song.
04:00Is that kind of the core gameplay mechanic?
04:02That is the core.
04:03Yes.
04:04Definitely, yeah.
04:04It's about going out there and using songs as a sort of like a language to nature,
04:10basically.
04:10A simplified language.
04:14You can see here, there's this really strange flower here,
04:17who's a little bit more intelligent than the other ones as it's looking at you.
04:20And if we try to talk to this, you sort of connect to it.
04:25And if you find the right tone and tune with it, sort of harmonize with it,
04:29sort of, you know, you open it up like this.
04:32Oh, wow.
04:33It will help you out.
04:35I love the sound design.
04:37Oh, the Joel who's working on this is like, oh, he's amazing.
04:41He's amazing.
04:42He does all the sounds and all the music.
04:44Yeah.
04:45And he's bringing out these amazing musicians who are doing all the live recording in the studio.
04:50So we hear like violins and everything in the office.
04:52It's super nice.
04:53Yeah.
04:54So the flower here opened up these little platforms so we can move forward.
04:58So it's about connecting to the environment and seeing how it actually helps you forward.
05:02Figuring out how this sort of like mini ecosystem is working.
05:05So it's like mini puzzles within the game to get you to the next portion.
05:08Kind of, yeah.
05:09But it's very open also.
05:10But you can see here, if you talk to this flower, this one doesn't really react positively.
05:16And we don't want to hand help people too much.
05:18We really want people to go out there and find their own ways to find out how does it actually
05:22work.
05:24So, yeah.
05:25There's not a lot of, you know, on-screen prompts or tutorials to go through.
05:28It's kind of just like, put you in the world, let you discover where it's going.
05:31Yeah.
05:31We've really been trying to work hard with like thinking a natural way to teach people how to do it
05:36without throwing up.
05:37Do this, do that.
05:38Yeah.
05:38It has to feel really organic.
05:40And I found the deer.
05:41You found the deer.
05:42So, you know, of course, if you're a little petted dog or something like that.
05:45If you had to go out to a dog, you don't know, you use really calm sounds.
05:48If you scream at it like this, of course, it will run away.
05:51That was bad.
05:51So, this is a way to use the musical or the song system where if you use like really soft
05:57sounds.
05:58Oh, right away.
05:58See if you can get it back now.
06:00Try to be really calm with the sounds.
06:03I love the image of this little character just sprinting through the forest howling at this deer.
06:09Yeah.
06:09So, now it's interested.
06:10And then, of course, we can sort of connect to it and harmonize with it.
06:15Now we're friends.
06:16Now we're friends, yeah.
06:18I love the art style.
06:19Thank you.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Your amazing singing voice.
06:22You're in karaoke.
06:23There's a lot of really nice dark black depths of shadows in there.
06:26Yeah.
06:27It makes everything pop.
06:28Right.
06:28Exactly.
06:28We tried to find a, I mean, obviously we're a small team, but a small team can still do something
06:35really beautiful if you pick a style that really fits you and works with you.
06:38And also, I mean, it's nice to have something that's kind of simplified for the eye, I think, you know.
06:44So, this little deer is following us around now.
06:47And as you can see, it's very interesting to you.
06:50And this is kind of cool about it.
06:52This deer can actually sing to these flowers, these grass flowers, and then help you move forward into it.
06:57So, it's not only you who has this singing sort of language.
07:02It's also the different animals have different songs they can sing with to the nature.
07:06Do you ever get to a point where you're like kind of harmonizing with various animals and that changes the
07:11way that the song sounds?
07:12Yeah.
07:13I want to show you a part of that, actually.
07:15Oh, yeah?
07:15You can see here.
07:16Wow, look at that.
07:18Yeah.
07:19There's an owl flying around up there at the top.
07:23And if you try to sing with this one right now, it might not be interesting.
07:25You can try to see.
07:26Oh, he flew away.
07:27He flew out.
07:29Anyway.
07:30He had his own glance.
07:31Yeah.
07:31The owl might not be interested in you right now because you don't know its language.
07:35But later on, we will learn to speak to this owl.
07:39I'll show that a little bit later in the game.
07:41The other thing that's kind of cool about the world is that we sort of built it in a Metroidvania
07:45style that,
07:46if you look up at the waterfall there, Alexandra, you see there's more of these draft flowers there.
07:51But I can't actually get up there right now.
07:53I have to figure out a way to get up there.
07:55And I don't know that right now.
07:56So I have to return there later.
07:57But even if I get up there, I might not be able to actually talk to these flowers because I
08:02don't know the language for the flowers
08:03and I can't bring it there with me.
08:04So you can always sort of return to the world and reuse it.
08:08And that's obviously the whole Metroidvania part of the game.
08:11We're going to try to take this little weird thing here.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Oh.
08:15Oh.
08:16Oh, actually.
08:17We'll show that now.
08:19Yeah.
08:19There's all these little secret things.
08:20So if you have harmonized with this deer, you can also ride around with it.
08:24Oh, wow.
08:25Which makes you, you know, it's kind of like a secret thing you'll find out.
08:29We don't tell people directly because if they find out by themselves, it becomes their discovery.
08:33It's a nice surprise.
08:33Yeah.
08:34It becomes much more interesting.
08:35It's nothing you need to do to finish the game, but you can explore it.
08:38You can do it.
08:39It helps you go quicker through the level.
08:41I think if you sing at the same time, it'll run faster.
08:43Oh, yeah.
08:43Yeah.
08:44Even I didn't know that.
08:45That's fine.
08:46I feel like this is the kind of game that's going to have a lot of these little surprises and
08:50discoveries.
08:50Yeah.
08:50Yeah, exactly.
08:51Yeah.
08:52So now Alexander picked up a shard, and this shard sort of powers the Elder Tree of the forest, which
08:58means that you can run down there in this hub thing and power yourself up.
09:03So you can find these different shards that are hidden all around the world, and it will power the Elder
09:08Tree.
09:09And if you power it enough, it will give you new abilities.
09:12So I think we're going to learn climbing here, which is a crucial part of the game.
09:18Yeah.
09:26Wow.
09:30It's such a soothing soundtrack.
09:31I can imagine all this music being played in your office while you guys are like...
09:34Do you want to go to sleep?
09:36Can't play this music too much during work hours.
09:38Yeah.
09:38No, no, no.
09:40Yeah.
09:42I'm a sucker for a great video game soundtrack, though.
09:46I am.
09:46I think you're going to like this one.
09:48Yeah.
09:49For sure.
09:50So now you actually learn how to climb trees, which is really, really useful in the game.
09:55So every time you see a tree like this, you can actually climb it.
09:58And it's very quickly.
09:59You just jump into it and just keep pressing the button, and it climbs up to the top.
10:05So this now means that I can actually climb any kind of tree, get anywhere, and it opens up the
10:10whole world once more.
10:11Now I'm seeing some of these other little rocks around here that have other icons that are not lit up
10:14yet.
10:15Yeah.
10:15So those are other abilities that you have to go out and find and then come back to this portal,
10:19basically?
10:19Exactly, yeah.
10:20And this one is actually not necessary to finish the game.
10:23This is some extra ones you can add to the game to be able to open up more of the
10:28secret areas in the world.
10:30Because the whole world is really connected in one giant map.
10:33And you can always return or go around as you want.
10:35We don't force anybody to do it.
10:37We want them to actually discover their own way and the way they want it.
10:40Like, you can go around and play around with the little lizards and try to sing with them if you
10:43want to.
10:43But you can also, you know, go straight through and try to follow the story itself.
10:48But it's up to you.
10:49How many hours of gameplay are we looking at?
10:52If you just run right through it, it's probably like, you know, five, six hours.
10:56But if you go out and pick up all the shards, talk to all the different animals, learn all the
10:59different things there is to learn.
11:01Then, yeah, here she's connecting to these little lizards.
11:04They're super cute, actually.
11:05Yeah, they're cute as in there.
11:06Aww.
11:07I was going to say, you made the Metroidvania comparison.
11:10Is this the kind of game where you're going to have a completion percentage at the end of the game?
11:15Or are you going to have different things that happen if you beat the game in a certain number of
11:19hours?
11:19Or is it kind of a more singular experience?
11:22It's more singular experience, I would say.
11:23But, and I don't want to delve too much into it because there's a couple of secrets in there, you
11:29know?
11:30But, yeah, it's very open like that.
11:32You can play it in a couple of different ways.
11:35Yeah, yeah.
11:36I think we're going to, so I'm actually going to skip forward now.
11:40Okay.
11:42To a much harder part.
11:43Good luck.
11:45Oh, I'm getting nervous.
11:46Yes.
11:48If anybody on this stage can do this, it's probably.
11:51That's okay.
11:51If you mess up, they just know it's live.
11:53Yeah, yeah.
11:53Exactly.
11:54So this is a lot further into the game.
11:57And like I said before, we're jumping forward now, but it's usually a fluid experience
12:00where you just walk through the world and you arrive at this giant deer.
12:04And the antagonists now, called the Silent Ones, we haven't seen much of them here in this demo,
12:08but they have captured this giant deer.
12:11And one thing you've learned now is, of course, tree climbing, but we have also learned how to glide like
12:17this.
12:18Oh, cool.
12:18And the combination of those two are super nice.
12:20You know, climbing a tree and then gliding from one tree to another.
12:23You feel like little tiny squirrels jumping around, you know?
12:26We have also learned now a new language, which is the bird language.
12:30Oh.
12:32So, Faye can actually imitate a little bird.
12:35It's really cute.
12:36And this one opens up these flower pots that has these kind of like, kind of like a bomb in
12:43it.
12:44Bomb seeds.
12:45Classic flower.
12:45Bomb seeds.
12:47So we're going to try to open up this instruction here.
12:58I feel like you could press the share button at any point and get a new desktop wallpaper.
13:03Oh, that's going to fall down.
13:05I love the aspect too, the Silent Ones, the enemies.
13:07They're the ones who are like capturing all these beautiful creatures that are singing.
13:10Yeah.
13:11They're like these meanies that have no voice.
13:13Yeah.
13:14If we have time, we might be able to show a little bit of that at the bottom down there.
13:17Yeah, they're lurking around down there.
13:19Oh, yeah.
13:19So, as I told you before, you can climb any kind of tree.
13:22And if you look at the giant deer.
13:23He's got trees.
13:24There's trees.
13:25Yeah.
13:25And it's way too far away, so we can't actually communicate with it now.
13:29So we want to try to get closer up to its head.
13:31So, good luck getting up there.
13:33Yeah, thank you.
13:38Bit of a Shadow of the Colossus vibe.
13:40Yeah.
13:42The mini Colossus.
13:43Mini one.
13:44It's quite big.
13:46Wow, look at that.
13:46I look so gorgeous.
13:49Yeah, there should be some silent ones down here.
13:51Now, I noticed when he's the bird, he now has that yellow coloring on it.
13:54Yep.
13:54So does that change now every time you have a different voice?
13:56Yeah.
13:56It's a way to basically show what kind of...
13:58We're trying to build that into the whole ways of understanding what language do we have
14:03right now.
14:04Watch out.
14:05We're going to climb up there quickly.
14:07Start thinking about the colors of the...
14:10Here he comes.
14:11Come forward.
14:15Okay, here we go.
14:16Trying to find a good tree.
14:17See one over there.
14:19Oh, yeah.
14:19And I love...
14:19Oh, there's a tree.
14:20Mine it up.
14:22Joel, our musicians, worked a lot with also the music of...
14:25You'll probably notice as you climb higher and higher, the music intensifies and changes
14:29depending on where you are.
14:30We put a lot of detail into that.
14:33Yeah.
14:38All right.
14:39Well, I would love to sit here and watch this for hours because I think it's just so beautiful
14:42to look at, but we have so much here on the PlayStation Livecast.
14:45So I want to thank Klaus and Alex for joining us today.
14:48Thank you so much for bringing Fea with us.
14:50Yeah.
14:50No problem.
14:51And this is coming out 2018?
14:53That's true.
14:54Early 2018.
14:55Early 2018.
14:55Okay, look for Fea.
14:57PlayStation.
15:03You don't have to do that.
15:03Here it is.
15:03It has been done.
