00:00.
00:03Hey, everybody. Welcome back.
00:05We're live at PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California.
00:08I've got a big show for you today.
00:10And we're going to take a closer look, actually,
00:12at a game that I'm personally super excited for,
00:14coming to PlayStation VR.
00:15This one's from London Studio.
00:18Folks, welcome.
00:20I'm very excited about this one.
00:21It's called Blood and Truth.
00:23And this is a special time,
00:26because we're actually going to get a look at the game in action,
00:28and we're going to check that out.
00:30So why don't you go ahead and throw that VR headset on.
00:33Now, this is a game from London Studio.
00:35You folks are actually behind the London Heist.
00:38Yeah, that's right.
00:39Yeah.
00:40We kind of took a lot of inspiration from the London Heist,
00:43a lot of the things we learned from that.
00:44And now we've just taken those learnings
00:46and just applied them to Blood and Truth
00:48and really just trying to plus everything
00:50and take it to the next level.
00:52Yeah.
00:53This time, you know, it's a full game.
00:55It's not a demo.
00:56It's not a short little experience.
00:57It's a full AAA VR title.
00:59And, you know, we can't be more excited to show it to people at PSX.
01:04That's right.
01:04So it's actually playable here at PlayStation Experience.
01:07If you are in town or at the show,
01:09you can actually get your hands on with it.
01:12And it's looking really, really good here.
01:14I think it's an awesome game.
01:17It's got a lot of good shooting mechanics in it.
01:19and it's got some really in-depth mechanics.
01:22A lot of the things that we saw sort of experimented with in the London Heist.
01:27and just, you know, we saw, you know, you can place a clip into the gun.
01:30Yep.
01:31So that sort of physicality, I think, that's really important for virtual reality.
01:36What do you think?
01:36Oh, man. That is totally one of our core design principles.
01:39Yeah.
01:39It's like in every other game that, you know, is kind of like an action-adventure game,
01:44you get to play the action hero.
01:46In Blood and Truth, you actually get to be the action hero.
01:48So, you know, everything you're doing with your hands from loading clips
01:52to climbing a ladder to crawling through an event,
01:55you're doing it all with your hands using that one-to-one object interaction,
01:58you know, leveraging the power of VR.
02:00You know, like that's what we wanted to do,
02:02is just make you feel like you're really there and really doing it.
02:05Yeah. So this is cool here. What are we seeing here in this demo?
02:10Yeah. So just to intro this a little bit.
02:12So in Blood and Truth, you play the role of Ryan Marks.
02:15You're like an ex-SAS soldier.
02:17And, you know, you've kind of been away doing your soldierly duties.
02:23And, you know, it's like that classic line from the movies, you know,
02:25just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.
02:28And, you know, so you're basically, you know,
02:31you've been pulled back into your family's sort of gangland struggle.
02:35And, you know, you're going to take the training
02:37and all the tools you learned from the SAS
02:39and now apply them to that gangland struggle
02:42to really save your family from the enemy.
02:45So what exactly makes Blood and Truth here,
02:48which we actually announced back at Paris Games Week about a month,
02:51a month and a half ago,
02:52what makes this sort of bigger and better than the London Heist?
02:55Well, we can see a lot of it on display here.
02:57So we got a lot of the things from the London Heist,
02:59like the object interaction, that one-to-one motion.
03:02You know, like, you know, James is going to pick the lock here.
03:05You can actually see him moving the move controllers
03:07in order to move the character's hands
03:09and pick the lock with his physicality.
03:11So we got a lot of that. We're doing all kinds of that.
03:13We're also doing a lot of movement.
03:15You know, a lot of VR games now are doing a lot of teleportation
03:18and stuff, and we just thought that is not right for us.
03:20You know, we want to have a grounded, real experience
03:23where you feel like you're in the experience for real.
03:26And so we have this movement system where you kind of move like a soul
03:29as a soldier tactically from point to point.
03:31You can do the classic sort of action hero thing
03:33where you're on either side of a doorway,
03:35kind of doing the gun lean left and right.
03:37Yeah, yeah.
03:37Gotta have a gun lean.
03:39That's it, man.
03:39Gun lean's important.
03:40I mean, that's one of the things I think about virtual reality
03:42in the action genre specifically that's so interesting.
03:46And not to talk about another game,
03:48but we saw a little bit of this from Firewall,
03:51which was actually announced at Paris the other night.
03:53I mean, we're seeing it here.
03:54this ability to peek around corners,
03:56this ability to sort of peer over obstacles,
03:59things that are almost impossible to do
04:02or certainly not a little bit cumbersome to do
04:04on a traditional flat game, as they say,
04:07played on your TV.
04:08I mean, we've seen some developers over the years experiment
04:11with leaning and things like that,
04:12but it's just so much more intuitive in virtual reality.
04:15It becomes a core part of the experience.
04:17Yeah, absolutely.
04:18I mean, we see people ducking and leaning instinctually,
04:22not even necessarily trying to go,
04:24oh, the bullets are coming in.
04:26I need to lean.
04:26It's like, oh, watch out.
04:28Yeah, yeah.
04:29I mean, it's just something that, you know,
04:30I know there's a ton of people out there
04:32who have still not, you know, tried out VR.
04:34It's a new, exciting technology.
04:37But, I mean, games like this especially
04:39with this high production value and, you know,
04:41just being able to really, it's a great test case
04:44for what I think is possible here
04:45in this virtual reality future.
04:47And it looks fan.
04:48Yeah, graphics are really nice.
04:50This is one of the best looking VR games I've seen.
04:52So, tell us a little bit about this interface
04:53we're seeing right now.
04:54Like, it looks like security camera.
04:56Yeah.
04:56So, we're kind of showing our object interaction off
04:59a little bit in this part of the demo.
05:00So, we're trying to track this character, Keech,
05:03and figure out where he's going to be at in this casino.
05:05So, we're using the security feeds to just sort of track him
05:08and then we're going to obviously, we might just go after him.
05:12Interesting.
05:13You know, he's just not the nicest person.
05:15Oh, okay.
05:15Go shoot some people in a casino it seems.
05:18Well, copy.
05:20Yeah.
05:20So, we're set in a casino here and we're sort of tracking this character.
05:24And one of the things I think is interesting about this game as well
05:26is it's a very sort of authentically London game.
05:29Yeah.
05:30You know, it's kind of like on one hand kind of the grit and grime of London,
05:34but on the other hand some of the glamour as well.
05:36And it's kind of the juxtaposition between those two.
05:39So, tell me a little bit about that from a design perspective.
05:41Well, I mean, we, you know, we live in London.
05:43We work in London.
05:44We live and breathe it every day.
05:45And so, we see all that stuff every day.
05:47And that's where we get a lot of inspiration.
05:50You know, like there's a tremendous amount of inspiration, you know,
05:53that we took from a lot of those Cockney gangster movies and stuff
05:56for the London heist.
05:57And this is now, yeah, exploring a little bit more of the glamorous side
06:01and the grit side of London.
06:02And so, you know, exploring more of the angles and how this great city
06:07kind of mixes both of those things.
06:09Yeah, I mean, it's just the city is practically a character unto itself
06:12in a game like this.
06:13And, you know, I think it's just it's so cool to be able to explore
06:16something like that in VR.
06:18And I love that it's not, you know, just sort of a shooter.
06:22I mean, I love shooters to death.
06:24I play them all the time.
06:25But I like that they kind of hear it.
06:28Oh, that's cool.
06:30Yeah, using the PlayStation Move there, getting that precision shot in.
06:35It's very atmospheric here.
06:37Very tense.
06:38So this is actually first gameplay, first live gameplay
06:41that we're seeing out of this.
06:44And so this is Blood and Truth.
06:46Now, I don't think a release date has been discussed on this one yet.
06:50It's just well underway.
06:52Yes.
06:52You guys are hard at work.
06:53We are very hard at work.
06:55We managed to sneak away for a couple of days from PSX.
06:57But, yeah, as soon as we get done here, we'll be back on the plane
07:00and back to work.
07:01I mean, this is looking pretty good.
07:03I think you guys are almost done based on what I'm seeing here.
07:05You know?
07:06Let's just put it out, you know?
07:07Enough already.
07:09This looks great.
07:10I mean, you know, and I know development, especially on VR, is tricky
07:14because there's just so many moving parts, there's so many moving pieces,
07:17and there's so many things you have to factor in during the development process.
07:20So I'll be honest with you.
07:21I've been doing this for a long time.
07:22It's not often that I see a title, you know, so early in development
07:27that looks this polished.
07:29Oh, well, thank you, first of all.
07:32You know, we have a really great team in London Studio, you know,
07:36the team behind the London Heist, behind VR Worlds, and, you know,
07:40the studio actually has a pretty rich history.
07:42Yeah, it does.
07:43We did, you know, the getaway back in the day, and, you know,
07:46we have some people on the team that actually still are in the studio
07:49from that title.
07:49So we learned a lot over the years, and, you know, we're just applying it.
07:53All coming together.
07:54You know, I feel like it is, and being able to actually go to a show like this
07:58and show it to people and seeing the smiles on people's faces after they're playing
08:01is just awesome.
08:02This is cool here.
08:03Was that a charge I saw, an explosive charge that was planted there?
08:07Yeah, so you're basically trying to take out Tony's casino here
08:09and basically kill one of his major revenue streams.
08:13And so you're planting some C4, moving through the casino.
08:17You can see our movement system at work here.
08:19James is kind of striking around in the movement points
08:22and shooting at the enemies.
08:24So really it just gives you a lot of control and a lot of, you know,
08:29agency when you're playing Blood and Truth.
08:31And this idea of, like, manually slapping in that clip is just really exciting.
08:36I mean, that's just such a...
08:37This is kind of what I think a lot of people sort of dreamed of
08:40when they were thinking about VR and what was possible with VR is,
08:43you know, look, DualShock 4, greatest game controller ever made in my book,
08:47but there is, you know, it is still sort of a layer of abstraction
08:51from the player to the interaction in the game.
08:55So being able to really, you know, use your full body, use your head,
09:00use your arms with the PlayStation Moves.
09:02And actually we have two PlayStation Moves, one for each hand on this title.
09:06Is that the primary control scheme?
09:08I think that's what we're leading with at this point, definitely.
09:11And it just gives you that control.
09:13Like, as you're saying, there's a lot of things that I think
09:16that people probably haven't seen this title.
09:17Like, James has just managed to grab the grenade and throw it back.
09:21Like in most games your only option is to run away from the grenade.
09:23Yeah.
09:23You can catch it, throw it right back.
09:25Or maybe you sort of fumble to like hold a button down
09:27and throw it back or something.
09:28So, I mean, yeah, it's just a good example I think of what's possible.
09:32This is a very new medium.
09:33We're all figuring this out.
09:35We're all in it together here.
09:36Every developer is working in the VR medium trying to,
09:39you know, just really innovate, you know,
09:42and develop a new, you know, vocabulary for gaming.
09:46And that's, I think, what's exciting to me to see games like this.
09:49Absolutely.
09:50It's a heck of a challenge.
09:51I won't lie.
09:52But, you know, that's why we get into this because it is so exciting.
09:56It's bleeding edge, you know.
09:57I mean, this is super, super cutting edge stuff.
10:00And definitely not toys you get to play with any old day of the week.
10:03That's it.
10:04That's why it's exciting to see all this.
10:05So looking great.
10:07Yeah.
10:08Oh, okay.
10:09All right.
10:10That's perfect.
10:10And I actually got a chance to talk with a couple of the leads
10:13on the title back at Paris Games Week.
10:16And they were telling me there's a lot of tricks you can do.
10:18Yeah.
10:18They were saying even things like if you get really good,
10:21you can throw a clip of ammo up in the air and slap your gun across it
10:24to reload in midair.
10:25Yeah.
10:25I mean, you could do that with two guns as well.
10:27You could throw two clips in the air, turn your guns upside down,
10:30catch the clips, and take some guys out.
10:32That's ridiculous.
10:32Okay.
10:32We need to see that.
10:32Playfulness is a huge part of our title.
10:35James is going to, ah, there's a nice little trick there.
10:39Okay.
10:39All right.
10:39Look at that.
10:40We'll get shot in the face.
10:43Time and place for that.
10:44I mean, that is super cool.
10:45And I am sure that you can dual wield if you want.
10:48Yeah, absolutely.
10:49We got a bunch of different weapons.
10:51If you see the trailer, we've got SMGs and assault rifles,
10:54and we saw some things over there.
10:56Yeah, SMGs.
10:56Give me those.
10:57Yeah, yeah, man.
10:59Yeah, this is cool.
10:59This is really cool.
11:00This is kind of what, you know, I mean, like many people,
11:03the London Heist was one of the most impressive experiences,
11:07especially early on during PlayStation VR.
11:09I mean, it looked incredible.
11:11It played great.
11:12It was exciting.
11:13It was immersive.
11:14I mean, everything from lighting a cigar to, you know,
11:17spraying, you know, an SMG out of window in a moving truck.
11:21I mean, it was, I love that truck sequence, like opening up the,
11:24you know, the glove box and messing with the guys like soda
11:27and all that kind of stuff.
11:28I love doing stuff like that in VR.
11:31It's a huge part of the appeal to me.
11:34And, of course, you know, being able to peek around corners
11:36and cap fools here like we're seeing is also very, very gratifying.
11:41It's like London Heist on a serious steroids.
11:43Like on mega steroids.
11:45Mega steroids.
11:46Well, that's, you know, absolutely what we tried to do
11:48is take the best bits of London Heist and then really just
11:51take a lot of inspiration from these action movies that we love,
11:54you know, movies like John Wick.
11:55John Wick.
11:56John Wick.
11:57Atomic Blonde.
11:58John Woo.
11:58Yeah, that's a great inspiration as well.
12:00John McLean, Die Hard.
12:02Yeah.
12:02So it's being the action hero and doing all those really cool things
12:05that you've always wanted to be able to do in a game.
12:08And, well, now you can.
12:10So tell us a little bit about the locomotion system here.
12:12Is that holding the move button to move forward?
12:14Or how does that all work right now in development?
12:16You can basically just look at the point you want to move to,
12:18press the move button, and then you move there.
12:20I see.
12:21I see.
12:21That's a good way to do it.
12:22Almost like you assign a point and then you kind of go to it.
12:26Uh-huh.
12:26And the other cool thing is you can actually strafe between
12:28points as well.
12:29Uh-huh.
12:30You know, it gives you a lot of control.
12:32That's really cool.
12:32Like, yeah, it's interesting to see different developers
12:35experiment with this.
12:36You mentioned teleporting earlier.
12:38It's certainly from a comfort level.
12:39like it can be a good fit for certain titles.
12:42And then there's other titles that give you full control,
12:44direct control using DualShock or even PlayStation Move in
12:47some cases.
12:48But, I mean, I think this is what I mean is there's still just a
12:52lot of experimentation going on.
12:54This is crazy.
12:56Yeah.
12:56You know, one of our sort of mechanics is just a slow-mo idea.
13:01Oh, shot Marvin in the face.
13:03Wow.
13:03You can basically, you know, move faster than the enemies
13:07because of your training.
13:08and so, yeah, you see James showing that off there.
13:11That's nice.
13:12It feels awesome.
13:13So how often do you use that mechanic?
13:14Well, how much are we going to talk about in the show?
13:17But let's say that, you know, you'll be using it quite a bit.
13:19Okay.
13:19That's good enough for me.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Lots of opportunity to experiment and play with that and,
13:25you know, feel those cool things.
13:26And then doing reload in slow-mo, right?
13:28Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
13:29You can reload.
13:30You can do all those gun tricks in slow-mo as well.
13:32So, you know, a lot of really, really cool things.
13:36That's crazy.
13:37I mean, he's, uh, our demo right here is managing this awfully well.
13:41Uh, you know, he's, uh, he's a scary guy with a gun.
13:44Yeah.
13:44You know, he's a producer and I, uh, when he tells me the schedule is the schedule,
13:48I can do it.
13:49Yeah.
13:49Yeah, better listen to him.
13:50That's it.
13:52That's cool.
13:53Yeah, it actually really works too.
13:54Like, it doesn't feel clumsy or, you know, I mean it.
13:58I mean, this is like very smooth.
14:01Oh, my.
14:02Here we go.
14:02So, yeah, I know there's some decisions you can make in this game too.
14:05Yeah.
14:05Tell us a little bit about that.
14:06Yeah, well, I mean, you know, in the game we want you to be the kind of action hero that
14:11you want to be.
14:12So, you want to be the guy who's trying to kind of convince this character to give the information,
14:16be the good cop or you're going to be the bad cop.
14:19Mm-hmm.
14:19In this sequence, you know, you can make a choice about what to say.
14:24You can also make a choice of what to do.
14:26There's nothing stopping him from shooting that guy in the face right now and just going,
14:30uh, look, uh, you know, give me information.
14:32So, he's just fired a warning shot there.
14:33That's another way to get the information you need.
14:35Tony's got this gallery.
14:36Goes there all the time.
14:37What's he going to do?
14:38That's it.
14:39I swear.
14:40Oh, shot him in the kneecap.
14:42Shit.
14:43You fucking fuck.
14:43I think James is in a bad mood today.
14:45Yeah.
14:45You slippery fuck.
14:48Shit.
14:48Ryan, get out of there.
14:57This is interesting to see.
14:58Oh, you finished him off.
15:01Bam.
15:02No choice.
15:05Find an interesting escape route.
15:08Nothing wrong with that.
15:09All right.
15:10Blood and Truth.
15:11Got some first gameplay there.
15:13Got to get a little bit more in depth in what we saw coming out of Paris
15:16Games Week.
15:16So, I appreciate that.
15:18looking really polished.
15:19Really excited about this one.
15:21No target release date yet.
15:23Uh, but very promising game.
15:26I think, uh, I think that's going to be our look at Blood and Truth.
15:29So, thank you so much, gentlemen, for dropping in.
15:31Yeah, thank you.
15:31Thanks for having us.
15:32Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
15:32And we've got a lot of great stuff coming up next.
15:34So, stay with us.
15:37PlayStation.
