00:00I really started thinking about this and watching that WBC last night which was just a wonderful
00:04wonderful watch and I get that these things are for sure they're cultural there's so many
00:10circumstances going on with why baseball fans of seemingly all of the other nations that are
00:18playing in WBC care about this in ways that maybe the American fan doesn't I'm not dumb I get it
00:25I
00:25understand it I'm just sort of talking about it in a way of like oh I wish I could get
00:30me some of that
00:30like that looks I wish that we had that much fun at games but it like it doesn't happen at
00:42baseball
00:42stadiums around America and I like okay 100 I'm not calling for posters and flags and parties I get
00:49that this is a small tournament but the the the simple idea of consistently asking for shorter
00:56seasons which seems to be an issue in almost every sport that we talk about comes up in one form
01:02or
01:02another we're mad when we go to 17 NFL games the baseball season's too long Steve Kerr and Draymond
01:09are saying what they're saying about shortening the NBA season um boy I get excited no matter like
01:16I don't care who's playing who let's watch right more sports I'm in more sports let's get into it
01:22and I don't think that it's ever going to get reduced and I also believe that as our generation
01:28starts to age out of being the real impactful generation younger people are taken in sports
01:34in different ways I don't know if you saw the Tennessee Georgia highlight where Tennessee college
01:39baseball Tennessee's down by I think down one they got a runner on and this kid in the bottom of
01:44the
01:44ninth hits one and he thinks it's a tank so he he unloads oh yeah and he immediately takes the
01:50bat
01:50and he angrily spikes it and he's pointing to the dugout and he's pimping it and he's going banana as
01:56well back back back goes the left fielder and robs him and so I mean the kid never got to
02:02touch
02:02them all because he's out and so the Georgia team they come streaming out of the dugout and they run
02:08to the uh the outfield on the warning track and they're celebrating like they just won the natty
02:12and that to me is kind of reminding of what you're talking about where you're starting to see more
02:17of it in baseball where you know bat flips are now okay and overt celebrations and here have the uh
02:24the championship chain and we're gonna go ahead and bite a guy you know if our team does well I
02:29think you're starting to see this turn a little bit here in the U.S. but it is a stark
02:33contrast when
02:34you see like the Dominican Republic fans and they got drums and they're dancing and you know over in Asia
02:40they got cheerleaders on the dugouts and so I think it's starting to turn I mean it's the difference
02:45with sort of what you're seeing Dominican fans Venezuela Mexico here in the WBC it's to me it's
02:53very reminiscent to go to a Cal Stanford college football game and then go to an LSU or Alabama
03:00football game that's the gap that's the gap and I understand you can't just snap your fingers and
03:06make that happen but I know which one's more fun yeah even though I've never been to an SEC football
03:11game pretty fun but I know which one's more fun I went to an Iowa Ohio State football game at
03:18Ohio State
03:21wow wow I went to the A&M Tennessee game about eight years ago but the night before they do
03:27a thing
03:27called the midnight yell where 40,000 people show up at the stadium and it's basically a pep rally it's
03:34a
03:34pep rally and they've got their ROTC group at A&M which is about 5,000 strong and everybody's
03:39arm and arm and they're swaying back and forth and I'm looking around thinking this is a 40,000 person
03:45pep rally yeah and like people are streaming into the stadium to just go to a a pep rally let
03:51alone
03:51the game the next day which was you know 91,000 people or whatever double over time but it's a
03:57just
03:57kind of a different culture I mean we've talked extensively on this show about the problems in the NBA I'm
04:03not
04:03trying to suggest that they don't exist or whatever I do feel like we can remind everybody
04:09though you do you do understand you're not bound to watch any of this stuff it's not a rule you
04:17don't
04:17have to go to 81 home dates for the San Francisco Giants and if it drags to you I don't
04:24know go on
04:25vacation or something but I I would if I had the gavel for one day stop asking for less sports
04:36for two
04:37reasons one you to me you come off like a little bit of a fuddy-duddy and two it ain't
04:43gonna happen
04:44it's not gonna happen zero chance period ever you might get more you might get more
04:52I you love March Madness oh yeah love the tournament this thing that starts on Thursday
04:58used to actually start on Thursday and people would go I don't know a lot of teams a lot of
05:06teams did
05:06they let Siena in again oh boy why is Siena in and then what did they do they went you
05:12know what what
05:13if we went to Dayton on Tuesday and played more games oh yeah and we'll call it the first four
05:20don't call it a play-in even though nobody's pools start till Thursday so it's a play-in but what
05:26do we
05:26get we got more and every year you hear whispers that it could be even more they might start the
05:33week
05:33before and do 128 yeah they really shouldn't why not because already you've got about of the 68 you've
05:41got probably about 48 who have absolutely no chance including the aforementioned Siena they're in real
05:47trouble uh they've got Duke uh go ahead and lay the 29 by the way Duke in that game I
05:52would go ahead
05:52and lay it early because that number is going to balloon to like 34 whatever that thing is uh going
05:57to be gigantic I just don't have a problem with a game I don't either like if they don't have
06:01a chance
06:01like the college football thing oh my god Oregon's playing James Madison just play the game
06:07play the game get a beer shut up pretty much it's okay just have fun that's what we're doing here
06:16the other part of it is the fewer games you get it's going to turn into like what gas prices
06:23are
06:23doing right now there's a scarcity of oil because of the straits of Hormuz shout out to Hormuz
06:28and uh because the oil can't make it through the gas producers like oh yeah you can't get your oil
06:35go ahead and jack this up because there's not as much gas as there would be and so for sports
06:40if you went down to I don't know in the NBA 72 games that's five fewer home games those prices
06:46go up
06:47they don't go down don't worry it's not happening I know it's not happening um let's go to Matt in
06:52the city hi Matt thank you for calling uh Willard and Debs what's up hey guys how's it going great
06:59so uh one two things one uh with the the world baseball classic I think part of it what we're
07:08seeing with the enthusiasm from the other countries and the fans in the stands and how loud the opposing
07:14teams are getting you got to kind of like put it in context I think and look at it like
07:19America
07:20doesn't care about hockey nearly as much as Canada does but when we're playing Canada's game with a
07:26chance to beat Canada on the biggest stage suddenly the whole country look like Quebec for a week
07:32like this is a chance to knock it's America's pastime so every time these countries get a crack at us
07:40it's Mardi Gras and I get it and it's fun to watch but the other is you know growing up
07:44playing baseball
07:45and I'm not that old I'm a millennial but you know there was no bat flip your glove couldn't be
07:52purple
07:52you didn't wear a pink sleeve because you were feeling it that day so the guys that are currently
07:57in the league are kind of in the transition I think in the next wave like you said with the
08:02college
08:02game right now you'll see a lot more personality on the field and in the dugout but for now I
08:09think
08:09that's just the transition that that the game is in but I don't think it indicates that America
08:14doesn't care because everybody I know at work you know text chains everybody's super juiced
08:20after the win was super stressed after the Mexico Italy situation I mean people are dialed it's just
08:27we're we're not the bang drums and dance in the stands with cheerleaders kind of baseball country
08:31I love your point um but there's more discussion to be had there Matt thanks very much for for example
08:38um he's not wrong when he says part of this is because another country gets to beat America at
08:46quote unquote its own game that's true how there's a but though first of all if you went to the
08:54Dominican
08:54Republic and said what's your game what would they say it's baseball baseball yep so it's their game
09:00two number one number two um I would buy that if the Dominican fans only acted that way when they
09:09were
09:09playing America but that's not what happens the Dominican fans act like that in every baseball game
09:16and they act like that in baseball games that have nothing to do with the world baseball classic
09:21possibly the best game that we saw in this tournament had nothing to do with the United
09:26States of America Dominican played Venezuela oh my god the both lineups insanity every swing of the bat
09:36everyone in the stands losing it and I think it was seven to five and it was back and forth
09:42and it was
09:43just Ronald Acuna's in right he's trying to throw out Soto at third and I mean it's just it's just
09:50beautiful and so again I get it this is cultural I'm not asking for someone to just not act like
09:55themselves I'm I'm pointing out that I do think there is a cynicism that comes from excess it comes from
10:05the money we have the access that we have in in many cases to where we are a little jaded
10:12and we
10:13have a harder time just relaxing and having fun sometimes with stuff well I also think that
10:18culturally we are a little bit more tight because of social media and it's also you know the certain
10:24amount of puritanism where you know you can't really go out there and let your freak flag fly so much
10:31whereas you know other cultures that's kind of the norm and if you do something here for example if
10:36you went to a WBC game and you got up and you started dancing and having all kinds of fun
10:40I'm in
10:41phones are out you're getting recorded and next thing you know you're going to be on social media like
10:46look at this jabroni trying to you know do the samba or whatever he's trying to do so I do
10:51think that our
10:51culture makes it a little bit harder to be that much of an individual well and I also think that
10:58what
10:58you just described it's fantastic point and it's also something that for many of us I can none of
11:06this refers to everybody but for many of us it takes until you turn 40 or 50 or 60 or
11:15never to learn
11:16that you should you should dance with your shirt off you should let your freak flag fly you should
11:24not give a rip if you end up on instagram and embarrassed because it's not actually embarrassing
11:31because what what I think you learn through years on this earth nobody else dot dot dot gives a rip
11:41they just don't they don't and if they do say something it's completely a reflection on them
11:47exactly everybody is worried about themselves and and usually that's something that you say in a
11:54negative way I mean it in a positive way in this moment let yourself go nobody cares right nobody
12:00cares people care but who cares if they care is kind of the point I think they care I actually
12:05don't
12:05think they care I think that they care and what you said before is totally accurate where it's a
12:10reflection of themselves so if you go out there and it's funny you even said that about take your shirt
12:16off because I remember going to baseball games and you if it was a hot day you'd take your shirt
12:21off your shirt off does anyone ever like any male take their shirt off at a professional sporting event
12:28or a baseball game not if they got chess here they don't and the usher will probably storm down and
12:32say put your shirt back on because that's where the love of god yeah I mean it's not great under
12:38there
12:38always but whatever I mean we have we have a co-worker here who famously uh took off his shirt
12:44in an
12:44maze game and uh you want to talk about uh some body hair oh boy I won't out him but
12:51uh he's one
12:51of our newer employees now but that was the thing and you you just you'd go shirtless it was a
12:57hot day
12:57yeah and you went shirtless but now god forbid you do that because you know it's a hate crime and
13:03all of a sudden now I gotta text 24973 because I'm feeling unsafe whatever
13:11here's Draymond Green on his Draymond Green show with the Odyssey family uh backing Steve Kerr on
13:17the idea of 72 games because yay less sports there is a lot of games things are different I know
13:23everybody look at it like oh man they used to play 82 games all those years ago like that man
13:27they used
13:28to walk the ball up the floor like the pace that the game was played at now and the pace
13:32that the game
13:32was played at in the 90s is like drastically different like the fastest paced team in the 90s
13:37would probably be the slowest paced team today like it's drastically different and so the game
13:42has changed and the reality is it's just too many games but no one's taking less money the tv rights
13:48are sold just about every team own an arena they need to fill these nights in these arenas so you
13:54need dates so I don't think that's going anywhere but I think that's going to continue to be a problem
13:58especially as the game gets faster and faster because the product ultimately just gets dumbed
14:03down I think in my opinion when you just got tired guys playing against tired guys injured teams playing
14:07against injured teams you know they say less is more yeah except for half your injuries aren't real
14:12um and you're you're the old team so like you're the team that's having the biggest problem because
14:17you're the old team and you're the team that's injured yeah nobody like Draymond didn't have a problem
14:22with this seven years ago and the point is not even the 90s go back 10 years ago Dre it's
14:2710 years
14:28ago where the fastest team then would be the slowest team now you can make it so the game gets
14:34a little
14:34bit slower organically but they don't want to do that right so so he's not wrong with part of part
14:39of
14:39what he's saying I just think you're going to need to attack that in a different way fewer games is
14:45not
14:45the reason and I laughed so hard by the way the video version of what you just heard Draymond say
14:50when he talks about how teams used to walk the ball up the floor they they overlay it with a
14:56video
14:56and Michael Jordan is got the ball and he's walking it up the floor and I suddenly thought to myself
15:01you know uh not only do the Warriors often walk the ball up the floor Brandon Pajemski often walks up
15:07the floor without the ball uh whenever you ever notice this this is Pods's thing to like get more time
15:15on the shot because the shot clock doesn't start right and let me tell you something this guy is a
15:20ball player
15:21such a ball player and so he'll let that if you dribble that ball out there he's gonna get in
15:25front of the
15:26defender and he's gonna crab walk the ball up the floor without the ball and boy what's that ever gotten
15:34the
15:34Warriors an extra three seconds on the shot clock like whoa chestnut checkers for Pods next time we interview him
15:42what is that like what is this what are you doing is you just getting a rest control I don't
15:48maybe I think
15:49you're probably right is Pods a control freak he might be I don't know all you have to do is
15:54widen the court
15:55make the corner three a real three and if you get an offensive rebound you get the shot clock goes
16:01to 20
16:01not what is it 12 if you get an offensive rebound yeah and the eight second call if it was
16:0710
16:07you can make little moves to incentivize teams to actually play slower and win by playing slower let's
16:14do hockey breaks every quarter go get a snack every quarter yeah just leave we ain't come we're not back
16:23for the start of the next quarter anyway right we're all getting a snack we're out there hobnobbing with
16:29somebody up in the who knows what suite and don't make like yes all of you I like we turn
16:36on the games
16:38it's nothing you're all gone it's seats it's just a bunch of seats that had coming out of halftime
16:43and the start of the game for that matter I'm like look at all those seats they sell it
16:48good seats those are some good seats anthony's in hayward hi anthony thank you for calling
16:56hey guys happy monday yes sir i enjoy the classic i enjoy the classic games i don't think the other
17:03countries just go in there to try to beat the usa team i think they go in there to represent
17:08their
17:08country they're proud where they come from and they want to show the world that you know the usa and
17:13all that they did all the mlb players most of them are latin american so i mean and for the
17:20bat flip
17:21i'm pro bat flip uh to me it's like a like a touchdown and the player spikes the ball well
17:26the home run i'm gonna flip my bat up and if you want to get mad about it strike them
17:31out don't be a
17:32mad bum anthony thank you very much um yeah like it's funny when he says i'm pro bat flip i
17:40i don't
17:41know there's really not room for you to not be pro bat flip anymore unless you just want to be
17:47one
17:47of these american fans that sits there down the right field go home when you score a touchdown hand
17:54the ball to the referee act like you've been there before from a bunch of people who've never been
17:59there before just like gosh we just have a good time stop dunking the basketball just lay it in
