Should Patriots trade for A.J. Brown or draft a WR?
Transcript
00:00Does he actually want the Patriots to take a wide receiver in the draft over trading for A.J. Brown?
00:06No, I don't believe that's what you were suggesting.
00:09No, no.
00:10Sometimes it's confusing, I'll admit, when you finish your lead.
00:13Well, I mean, that's on you. I can't help that you don't understand the language I'm speaking.
00:17Yes.
00:17But my lead was, like, simple as, you know, you have all these mock draft people,
00:22and I had about five of them, and the majority of them had them taking a defensive lineman or an
00:28edge guy.
00:30Not taking a wide receiver.
00:32Not taking, and it was only one guy who had them taking a wide receiver,
00:35and that was the Lance Zerline from the NFL Network.
00:38So that's why I said I think the draft is going to be huge,
00:41because if they don't do anything and they draft a wide receiver in the first round,
00:47doesn't that tell you they're out on A.J. Brown?
00:51Yeah, but it seems to, and it's an ever-changing situation,
00:54but it seems like the Eagles might be more likely to part with A.J. Brown now prior to the
01:02draft than they were last week.
01:05Yeah, it's because they re-signed Dallas Goddard.
01:07Correct.
01:07So they feel like they have some of the weapons they want still in the room.
01:12But do you think they're, like, I guess you think they're hell-bent on moving him before the draft,
01:18or would they be cool even if it was after the draft,
01:21still thinking that we would get a first-round draft pick in next year's draft?
01:25I think they have no problem waiting.
01:27Right.
01:27I think if the offer is right, they'd do it now,
01:30but I think they also don't feel pressured to do it.
01:33So if they don't have a problem waiting,
01:36then that means unless the Patriots are willing to really put their foot on the gas pedal
01:41and say, okay, up our offer, here's what we're willing to give up,
01:44a first and a third next year,
01:48then if they're not willing to do that and they're willing to wait after the draft,
01:53now we'll get a good indication of...
01:55Well, Curtis suggested it earlier.
01:58You give them a first this year and a second next year,
02:01and you get it done now.
02:02And reality is, is the second, the first-round pick this year is really a second-round pick.
02:09And next year, Shine was the first, I heard it, so thanks for pointing it out,
02:12but that teams are more likely to give up picks in this draft
02:16as opposed to next year's draft because of how deep it is.
02:18Correct.
02:19So if you give up a first and you give up a second next year,
02:23the second next year is more valuable maybe than even the 31st is this year.
02:26Yeah, I don't think there's any way they give that up.
02:28Right, and to Shime's point, if you're the Patriots or you're the Eagles,
02:34you might say to the Patriots, we want next year's first-round draft pick.
02:37Right.
02:38Knowing that, you know, unless the Patriots are back in the Super Bowl,
02:42you're going to get a better pick.
02:44That would be my only offer then.
02:46If they want next year's first-round pick, that would be straight up for A.J. Brown.
02:49Yeah, which I don't think—
02:50Would you do that?
02:51Yes.
02:52Yeah.
02:53And I don't like pick—one singular pick for A.J. Brown is, to me, always worth it,
02:57no matter what the pick is at this point.
02:58And I think even—
02:58You're not picking in the top ten, so it doesn't matter.
03:00Even if it's a first, it's probably more likely it's a first and a fourth.
03:06Maybe a third.
03:07And I would say, Shime, would you agree a first and a third is pretty high for A.J. Brown,
03:11right?
03:11Yeah, that seems to me what the ceiling would be, a first and a third.
03:14But I don't even think that the—and I think that's probably a reason why the deal hasn't gotten done,
03:18because I don't think the Patriots have any interest.
03:19If they're giving up their first, they probably don't want to give up any other picks.
03:23Right.
03:23And the way that the Patriots did it last year, going into the season with just Steph Diggs coming off
03:30an injury,
03:31I think the Patriots are fine with going,
03:33all right, well, if we don't get A.J. Brown, no big deal for us.
03:36We'll go on with what we got, right?
03:39Do you feel like the Patriots would be pressed on going into—
03:42Well, because I think they believe there's an upside to Dobbs.
03:46Yeah.
03:46Yeah, I feel like they believe Dobbs is a better addition this season
03:52than what they were doing last season with Steph Diggs.
03:56But I love that.
03:57Next year's first.
03:59The Eagles get the better draft pick into the better draft year.
04:03The odds are the Patriots will not be in the Super Bowl again,
04:05so it'll be at least a top 30 pick.
04:07Right.
04:07And the Patriots get to keep their entire draft this offseason to get a tackle,
04:12to get an edge rusher, to do whatever, while not needing to draft a receiver,
04:16which hasn't worked for the franchise since Terry Glenn.
04:18But to Shime's point, though, if you're the Patriots,
04:21we know that they talk about how much they love their draft picks.
04:24Are they really willing to—they know that there's a possibility that they don't make the Super Bowl next year
04:29and that their draft pick next year is better.
04:31Are they willing to come off of that?
04:33I wish I knew.
04:35Yeah, and I would say no.
04:36I wish I knew.
04:37Yeah, I would say no.
04:40So, Wiggy sort of answered that text.
04:43I think you cleared that up with a texter.
04:45Yeah, right.
