Should the Patriots consider signing Stefon Diggs? Scheim: "If you are the New England Patriots, why don't you bring back Stefon Diggs, even if you are also trading for A.J. Brown?" With Jennings news, we know the WR market. Thoughts?
Transcript
00:00So as I mentioned in trending this morning, the Minnesota Vikings have signed wide receiver
00:05Jawan Jennings to an $8 million base contract up to $13 million with incentives.
00:10So you now understand and can see the market for veteran wide receivers right now in the
00:17NFL.
00:18If you're the New England Patriots, why don't you bring back Stefan Diggs, even if you are
00:22also trading for AJ Brown, even if that trade is basically locked in and you're just waiting
00:27for that June 1st date to pass so that it's not as punitive on the Eagles cap situation,
00:33why not bring him in and have him, Romeo Dobbs and AJ Brown, a legit trio of wide receivers
00:40for your young developing quarterback who is really good.
00:43I just, I think it's the perfect opportunity.
00:46It's going to cost you 15 million bucks.
00:47That is chump change.
00:49It's less than the contract he was on originally when he was here.
00:51I mean, I just, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't want to go out and just provide the
00:56most possible weapons for Drake May.
00:59Do they have an issue with him?
01:01You think internally?
01:03And, and, and I don't mean the, the, uh, incident or the case with the chef.
01:08I mean, the stuff that happened at the Superbowl afterwards, which everybody described as a cluster
01:16F.
01:17The sideshow nature of it.
01:19Yes.
01:19Yes.
01:20Uh, with the, with Cardi B, no offense, Wiggy.
01:23Um, and you know, everything that went on there, are they just done with him?
01:28Do you think?
01:29I don't think it's because of that, but Shime, I just, I, I think it would be great if they
01:35brought back Stefan Diggs.
01:36I hated that they released him in the first place because I do think he has another great
01:40year in him.
01:41Like, I do think he could be a thousand yard receiver again this coming season.
01:45Then it's just too awkward.
01:47Like to me, that's too awkward.
01:48You released the guy.
01:49Cause you said the contract we signed you on doesn't make sense financially.
01:54We don't really think that it's worth paying you that.
01:57But now that your court case is over and you're starting to maybe get some bites from other
02:02teams.
02:02We don't know yet, but I'm sure that will ramp up soon.
02:04Now we're going to bring you back on a cheaper contract.
02:07Like I can't see either party really doing that.
02:09I think it's too weird.
02:11I honestly think I, you make all those points are totally valid and accurate.
02:15I would say that last off season, both were needy of the other.
02:19And I think you could be in a position where we're back for very different reasons.
02:23Like if you bring in Steph Diggs now, he's humbled and he has a fire to go out and produce
02:31and get back on the field and show that this nonsense is behind us.
02:35I want to, you know, prove myself and the team may need more leadership than they thought
02:39last year.
02:40Well, I'll say this with Diggs.
02:41Like I know he has this stuff that was the off field allegations that he had to face and
02:46go to court.
02:47He was all about his business when he was here.
02:49Like he was, he was not a guy who seemed to ever be late to be checked out, to be
02:55aloof.
02:56Like he was everything and more that they could have asked of him.
03:00Right.
03:00So I don't think it's like a personal thing that they have against him where they don't
03:04want him in the locker room.
03:05I think it's purely financial and then Wiggy, you can talk to this more than I can, better
03:09than I can.
03:10Like, would you see a player do that?
03:13Say, okay, like you cut my, my big bucks, but now I'm coming back on a discount.
03:18No, because he'll go, you know what?
03:19I'll go someplace else and maybe I'll be able to perform at a specific level at that plate,
03:26that other place.
03:26And then maybe midway through the season, I'm able to get the contract extension that I need
03:31because he knows, and I think he said it about, you know, what he was able to do with 52
03:38% of
03:39the snaps and how he had over a thousand yards receiving.
03:42Like he knows he's like, he looks at the Jawan Jenningdale and goes, I'm not taking that.
03:47That guy had, you know, 500 yards receiving.
03:50I'm a thousand yard receiver.
03:52I'm not taking 8 million and guaranteed and a possibility to make 13 million.
03:58Yeah.
03:58Well, Sean was talking about 15 million.
04:00So yeah, whatever it was.
04:02Yeah.
04:02What I think this is like a Belichick depressed asset, someone he would totally go after right
04:06now, like in the old school days.
04:08Yeah.
04:08And Curtis, you brought up the leadership aspect.
04:09Like when you look at the offense, I mean, unless you expect Drake may to be a massive
04:15portion of your leadership group this year, it's really kind of just like, I guess, Morgan
04:19Moses or like Matt Collins.
04:22Shouldn't, shouldn't he be?
04:23It's going to be his third year.
04:25He's the quarterback.
04:25I think he should definitely be a leader, but at the same time, he's still developing.
04:30He's still on the rookie contract.
04:31Oh, excuse me.
04:32No, I'm just, Hey, I'm just pointing out the fact that we just, we just watched a Red Sox
04:36team.
04:36He was the MVP runner-up and led them to the Super Bowl and you said he should be a
04:40leader?
04:41Yeah, of course.
04:41He should be the leader.
04:42Yeah, this is his team.
04:43Of course.
04:43Like, I understand he is a leader of this team.
04:45The Holmes in year three is absolutely the leader of the Chiefs.
04:48I understand.
04:48But he also isn't necessarily as much of a vocal leader as it appears as some people
04:53are.
04:54And so I don't want a Red Sox situation where you go in expecting all of these other guys
04:59who haven't necessarily been the most vocal leaders on their teams in the past to all
05:04of a sudden be your leaders.
05:05And it's a mess.
05:06What?
05:07Shyam, did you go see a hand specialist after that second pass from a break, man?
05:10No, absolutely not.
05:11I would, I don't, I don't want anybody ever touching my hands on that.
05:14Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
05:16Shyam, we got to, we might do three hours on this on the Big Dog Show.
05:20What are you talking about?
05:20You think that they need to bring in free agents to be the leaders of this locker room?
05:26No, I think bringing back, no, I think bringing back Stefan Diggs wouldn't be a bad thing
05:30because you know how vocal a leader he was on this team.
05:32He was very well respected by the other guys on this team.
05:35And as you pointed out, when he showed up in the building, he worked his ass off.
05:38Yeah, but this team doesn't lack leadership, though.
05:40This team's got plenty of leaders on it.
05:42When you look at the Patriots, I mean, you talk about-
05:46Hunter Henry.
05:46Hunter Henry, Morgan Moses.
05:48Morgan Moses.
05:49You know, you defensively-
05:50Mike Rabel.
05:52Defensively, you got Milton Williams.
05:53You got Robert Splane.
05:55I mean, they got Christian Gonzalez.
05:57There were plenty of guys that have been around here, you know, long enough that our lead is
06:03in that locker room.
06:03This team doesn't lack leadership.
06:05It lacks, do they have a legitimate number one, I could put the game in my hands, offensive
06:13weapon.
06:14Yeah.
06:15Your issue is that it's not just, you can't just bring Steph Diggs back if you're the
06:19Patriots for one year.
06:21Because he's going to want, he's going to want a couple of deals.
06:25Yeah, well, yeah.
06:26I mean, if you're Diggs-
06:27A couple of years on a deal is what you're saying.
06:28Yeah, if you're Steph Diggs, you're 32 years old, you're coming off a thousand yard receiving,
06:33do you really want to like, you know, basically be on another one-year deal where you got to
06:39like, earn your keep?
06:40Wiggs, what do you think the guarantee minimum is?
06:43Like, 20 million?
06:43For Diggs?
06:44Yeah.
06:45I think Diggs is probably looking at it like he was going to make 21 million this season.
06:49So he's probably looking at it like, that's the world I should be in.
06:53Does he want a little bit more?
06:55Maybe.
06:55But I think he's probably looking at it like, I'm, you know, I'm a $20 million wide receiver
06:59and I'm not like a Jawan Jennings.
07:02I'm a guy that's worth 20 million.
07:05Maybe you give me, you know, I don't know, what did Mike Evans get?
07:09He got like maybe 19, 20 million in guaranteed.
07:12I think Diggs is probably looking somewhere around 35 in that world.
07:1635 guaranteed?
07:18Yeah.
07:18Mike Evans only got 16 million guaranteed on a three-year deal.
07:23Right.
07:24And Mike Evans was dealing with a bunch of injuries last year.
07:26I think you don't think Diggs is looking at like, I want, you know, guaranteed, give me 30?
07:31Well, like, Shyam, so the premise that I feel like you're saying here, and correct me if I'm wrong,
07:37like, it sounds like you also think that Diggs' market is not going to be that robust.
07:42No, it's absolutely not.
07:43So he'll need the Patriots, and maybe that's why both sides can kind of put, like, you know,
07:49acquiesce to each other and say, like, well, this isn't perfect, but we can make it work.
07:52It feels very much like Curtis brought up Bill early.
07:55It feels like Bill saying, hey, go check your market.
07:57He sees Juwan Jennings, a fellow older receiver, sign for a one-year deal worth $8 million,
08:03possibly up to $13 million, and he goes, okay, I can go get a one-year $15 million deal.
08:07And the Patriots are like, yeah, we can pay that.
08:10That's kind of how I feel.
08:11No way.
08:11Steph Diggs is looking at it going, I can get a one-year $15 million deal when Juwan Jennings had,
08:16he barely had over $600 million.
08:18Why hasn't anybody signed him yet?
08:19I don't know.
08:20Listen.
08:21I'm telling you, that's the market.
08:22I think part of it was, I think there's a small part of it was like, all right,
08:26what's going on with this case?
08:28Now the case is over, and I think what's going to end up.
08:30He needs a chef.
08:30I think what's going to happen is a lot of these teams.
08:33And if he only gets $13 million, can he still afford a chef?
08:37No.
08:37What about the chief of staff?
08:39If she's only making hot dogs, I would think that you could probably afford.
08:43Great hot dog yesterday at the course, by the way.
08:45Oh, excellent.
08:46Excellent.
08:46Glitchy at the course yesterday.
08:48Awesome.
08:48Yeah.
08:48So I think that he's probably going to say like, all right, I'm going to see what happens
08:52with mini camps.
08:53I'm going to see what happens after the June 1st, kind of, you know, whatever that is,
08:57veteran, you know, where teams are unloading guys potentially for money.
09:01Who the hell knows?
09:02And so maybe he's a guy like, all right, as long as I'm getting my deal done before
09:06training camp starts, I'm good.
09:08He doesn't need to rush into any place.
09:11Shine.
09:12More.
