The separation of the offices of the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor (PP) to safeguard prosecutorial independence is among 11 motions to be tabled at the Malaysian Bar’s 80th annual general meeting (AGM) on Saturday (March 14).

The motion, proposed by Malaysian Bar chairman Datuk Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab, also calls for politicians to be barred from appointment as AG.

00:34create structural tension, conflicts of interest, and excessive executive control. Earlier, the
00:40AGM was delayed after the required quorum was not met during the initial count. Under Section
00:4664, Subsection 4 of the Legal Profession Act, 1976, at least 500 members must be present
00:54for the meeting to proceed. The quorum was still not met by 11 a.m., prompting a recount
00:59at 11.15 a.m. before proceedings finally resumed at 12.15 p.m. Meanwhile, other motions to be
01:07tabled include clarifying the Malaysian Bar's stance on judicial appointments to safeguard
01:12judicial independence, as well as addressing executive interference in the Legal Profession
01:17Qualifying Board and Legal Education.
