00:05The separation of the offices of the Attorney General, AG, and the Public Prosecutor, PP,
00:12to safeguard prosecutorial independence is among 11 motions to be tabled at the Malaysian
00:17Bar's 80th Annual General Meeting on Saturday. The motion, proposed by Malaysian Bar Chairman
00:23Datuk Mohamed Ezri Abdul Wahab, also calls for politicians to be barred from being appointed
00:28as Attorney General. The Bar has previously warned that combining the two roles could
00:34create structural tension, conflicts of interest, and excessive executive control. Earlier, the
00:40AGM was delayed after the required quorum was not met during the initial count. Under Section
00:4664, Subsection 4 of the Legal Profession Act, 1976, at least 500 members must be present
00:54for the meeting to proceed. The quorum was still not met by 11 a.m., prompting a recount
00:59at 11.15 a.m. before proceedings finally resumed at 12.15 p.m. Meanwhile, other motions to be
01:07tabled include clarifying the Malaysian Bar's stance on judicial appointments to safeguard
01:12judicial independence, as well as addressing executive interference in the Legal Profession
01:17Qualifying Board and Legal Education.
