00:02The Malaysian Bar on Saturday elected Anand Raj as its new president for the 2026 and 2027 term.
00:10This was decided during the Malaysian Bar's annual general meeting,
00:13which also saw the election of Murshida Mustafa as the vice president,
00:17as well as R. Jayabalan and Peter Douglas Ling taking on the secretary and treasurer roles, respectively.
00:25Anand said the appointments reflect continuity in leadership with three of the office bearers promoted from positions they held in
00:33the previous term.
00:34He said the new team is determined to strengthen its role as an independent voice in the justice system.
00:40He said the Malaysian Bar also passed 9 of 11 motions,
00:44including the one that calls for the separation of the offices of the attorney general and public prosecutor.
00:50He said while Malaysian Bar supports the principle behind the bill tabled in parliament,
00:54proposals in it allow executive interference in the role of the attorney general
00:59and in the selection of the public prosecutor, which undermines accountability and transparency.
01:04The annual general meeting was attended by 433 members.
01:08It did not meet the initial quorum of 500 members at 11.15am and was reconvened at 12.15pm.
