01:00Hello, Tanya. Howdy, Matt.
01:03Hello, Matt. Hi there, Tanya.
01:05Hi, Grandpa.
01:06Oh, Harry.
01:07Hi there, Schemer.
01:08Hi there, Schemer.
01:09Hi there, Schemer.
01:10Hi there, Schemer.
01:12Hello, Money. Hello, Money.
01:17Hello, Matt. Hello, Tanya.
01:19Hello?
01:21Hey, I hope that wasn't our train.
01:24Who said that?
01:25Hello, Matt. Hello, Tanya. The least you could do is answer me.
01:31Are you Tanya?
01:33No, I'm Matt.
01:36Oh, how you doing, Matt? Are you Matt?
01:39No, I'm Tanya.
01:40Well, then where is Matt?
01:41Let me out of here. I know where Matt is. Let me out of here.
01:48Okay, then, Matt. How are you, Matt?
01:52No, I'm Matt.
01:53Don't believe him. The other one is Matt.
01:55I'm Tanya. He's Matt.
01:57Now, you stay out of this, cutie.
01:59I'm Matt, and she's Tanya.
02:01Well, then you stand over there, and you stand over there.
02:05It's important to know who we're talking to.
02:07That's right. Why don't you introduce us to these nice folks?
02:10Okay.
02:11Okay, my name is Laszlo.
02:13My name is Eugene.
02:14And what about me?
02:16Well, you're funny looking.
02:17No. You gotta tell them my name. My name is Al.
02:21Well, good. Now we know which one is the dummy.
02:23Now, wait. We don't like to use that word.
02:25What word do we use, then?
02:27Now, now.
02:28Oh, good. Now we know which one is the now, now.
02:30Oh, that was terrific.
02:33I like that.
02:34He shouldn't be doing that for free. He could be selling tickets.
02:40Shining Time Station. It's Stacey Jones speaking.
02:44Oh, yes, sir.
02:46Oh, no, sir. Oh, I won't, sir.
02:48Goodbye.
02:49Oh, that was the train dispatcher.
02:51I'm afraid our passenger train will be late.
02:54Well, that's quite all right, ma'am.
02:56Say, are you two gonna be here for a little while?
02:57Yes.
02:58Yes.
02:58Would you mind keeping an eye on my bags while I run a small errand before the train comes?
03:02Sure.
03:02You'll want your bags for you.
03:04Great. Thanks a lot.
03:05Mister?
03:05Yo.
03:05Can we play with your dummies?
03:07Sure, why not?
03:09Thanks, Matt.
03:09Tanya?
03:10Do you think we can make these puppets work?
03:14Maybe.
03:15I'm sure we can.
03:17First, we will take dummy lessons.
03:19And then we'll take smarty lessons.
03:21Tell me, Tanya, can you say,
03:24A bag of boots, a bag of boots, without moving your lips?
03:29I can't.
03:31You're not trying.
03:33A bag of boots.
03:35A bag of boots.
03:37Well, it's a beginning.
03:39You should have a chat with James.
03:41Does he know how to work puppets?
03:44No.
03:46But he's an authority on trying, oh yes.
03:49As a matter of fact,
03:50James has been pulling a train that likes to play games.
03:54And when he speeds down the tracks all clickety-clack,
03:57nobody knows if he'll ever come backety-back again.
04:00And does he?
04:02Did he?
04:04I'll tell you.
04:16James had not been out to push coaches or freight cars in the yard for several days.
04:21He was feeling miserable.
04:27Oh, dear, he thought.
04:29I wonder how long I shall have to stay in the shed.
04:31Will anyone see my red coat again?
04:34Why did I go so fast that I made a hole in one of my coaches
04:38that had to be mended with, of all things, a passenger's bootlace?
04:44At last, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
04:47I know you are sorry, James, he said.
04:49And I know, too, that you want to be a useful engine.
04:53People are laughing at my railway, and I do not like that at all.
04:57I will try hard to do my best, said James.
05:02That's a good engine.
05:04There's nothing like determination.
05:06I want you to pull some freight cars for me.
05:09James was delighted and puffed away.
05:18Here is your freight train, James, said Thomas.
05:22Have you got some bootlaces ready?
05:24And he ran off laughing.
05:28Oh, oh, said the freight cars.
05:30We want a proper engine, not a red monster.
05:33James took no notice and started as soon as the conductor was ready.
05:38Come along, come along, he puffed.
05:40We won't, we won't, screamed the freight cars.
05:43But James didn't care, and he pulled the screeching cars sternly out of the station.
05:55The cars tried hard to make him give up, but he still kept on.
06:00Sometimes their brakes would slip on, and sometimes their axles would run hot.
06:04And each time the trouble had to be put right.
06:07And each time James would start again, determined not to let them beat him.
06:14Give up, give up, you can't pull us.
06:16You can't, you can't pull the cars.
06:20I can and I will, I can and I will, puffed James.
06:24But slowly but surely, he pulled them along the line.
06:30At last they saw Gordon's hill.
06:33Look out for trouble, James, warned his driver.
06:35We'll go fast and get them up before they know it.
06:38Don't let them stop you.
06:39So James went faster, and soon they were halfway up.
06:43I'm doing it, I'm doing it, he panted.
06:45Will the top never come?
06:47Then, with a sudden jerk, it all came easier.
06:51I've done it, I've done it, he puffed.
06:54Hooray, it's easy now.
06:56But his driver shut off steam.
06:58They've done it again.
06:59We've left our tail behind.
07:01Look, the last cars were running backwards down the hill.
07:05The coupling had snapped.
07:07But the conductor stopped the cars and got out to warn approaching engines.
07:11That's why it was easy, said James, as he backed the other cars carefully down.
07:16What silly things freight cars are.
07:18There might have been an accident.
07:21Shall I help you, James, called Edward.
07:23No, thank you, answered James.
07:25I'll pull them myself.
07:27Good.
07:27Don't let them beat you.
07:29You're doing well, whistled Edward, as James slowly struggled up the hill.
07:38I can do it, I can do it, he puffed.
07:41He pulled and puffed as hard as he could.
07:47I've done it, I've done it, he panted.
08:03They reached their station safely, and James was resting in the yard when Edward pulled up.
08:08Peep, peep, he whistled.
08:10Then, James saw Sir Topham Hatt.
08:13Oh dear, what will he say, he asked himself.
08:20But Sir Topham Hatt was smiling.
08:23I was in Edward's train and I saw everything, he said.
08:26You've made the most troublesome train on the line behave.
08:35After that, you deserve to keep your red coat.
08:42Sometimes you'll surprise yourselves with what you can do.
08:46Are you paying attention in there?
08:49Do I have a touch?
08:51No.
08:52And another thing, finish your broccoli.
08:55Broccoli?
08:56I don't have any broccoli in here.
08:58What?
08:58I'll go and get you some.
09:00I hate broccoli.
09:02I hate broccoli.
09:04Let me see that.
09:06You're my, and...
09:09You're Tanya.
09:10I'm the vegetable police.
09:12And you're under a red.
09:17You want...
09:18You want to put on a shell?
09:20Okay.
09:22Then you'll get everyone.
09:30Oh honey, can't it wait?
09:31It can't!
09:32It can't!
09:33It won't take long!
09:35I'm in the middle of something!
09:37You have to come now!
09:39Come on, please, please!
09:40Oh boy, we gotta be seeing another, uh, free show.
09:43Yay!
09:44Free!
09:44Yay!
09:47Shh!
09:48Do you hate broccoli?
09:53You're supposed to say that to me.
09:55Kids, kids, kids, come on.
09:56Let's see something good around here.
09:57Let's get the show going, huh?
09:58Uh, are you Matt or, uh, are you Tanya?
10:03You're supposed to ask me later about the vegetables.
10:07No, you won't say that.
10:09I do not.
10:10You, I say that.
10:12Oh, what are you two arguing about?
10:15She got it wrong.
10:17She got it wrong.
10:18All right, neither of you two got it wrong.
10:20You just had a different idea of what getting it right is.
10:23That's all.
10:24Why don't you two practice?
10:25You'll be better the next time.
10:28There's not gonna be a next time.
10:30Oh, there's not gonna be a next time.
10:34I wouldn't be too sure of that.
10:36You know what my old granny used to say?
10:39Every time has a next time.
10:41Even this time, we'll have a next time, too.
10:44Sometime.
10:48Kids, kids, come here, come here.
10:49Schemer wants to talk to you.
10:50Get over here, kids.
10:51I gotta tell you what my favorite part of your show was.
10:53That you didn't sell any tickets.
10:55I mean, I do not want to say that your show was awful, but, uh...
10:59Hey, why not?
10:59I'm an honest guy.
11:00Your show was awful.
11:02Seriously, though.
11:03Do you really want to know what my favorite part of your show was?
11:06When it was over.
11:12You were the one who got it all in this.
11:14I did not.
11:15You did.
11:16No, you did.
11:17I did not.
11:18Hey, kids, kids, kids.
11:19Come on.
11:19Hey, hey, hey.
11:21Hey, you both are awful.
11:23Hey, come on.
11:24Relax about it, though.
11:25You got the rest of your lives to live.
11:26I'll tell you what.
11:27I know what's going to make you feel better.
11:28Why don't you come over with me to the arcade and spend some of your money?
11:32Hey, great idea, huh?
11:33Schemer always comes up with it.
11:34Come on, kids.
11:35Follow me.
11:52Gee, you look sad.
11:55Hey, let's, like, fill his ears with good vibes and smiley sounds.
12:01Do you know the one he wants?
12:03Break train?
12:04Uh, no.
12:05You?
12:06No.
12:08Where's Cheeto?
12:10Counting his nickels.
12:12Oh, because I never heard a freight train.
12:16So none of us know it.
12:18So what?
12:19Let's play it anyhow.
12:20Hey, good idea.
12:22One, two, three.
12:30Whoa, what do you think?
12:33Well, actually, I think it was kind of lousy and it was your fault.
12:37Hey, wait a minute.
12:37You know, I didn't say nothing about it.
12:40Wait a minute.
12:42It's Cheeto's fault.
12:50You're the culprit.
12:51You're the culprit.
12:52You're the one who did it.
12:53Did what?
12:54Don't deny it.
12:56I can see it by the look on your face.
12:58You're the one who ate all the lemons.
13:02I didn't.
13:03You didn't, huh?
13:06Well, maybe they're in the anything tunnel.
13:09Come on, let's take a look.
13:36You're the one who ate all the lemons.
13:39So don't feel bad if you just can't get it right.
13:43Cause if you keep on trying, you'll get it eventually.
13:47So take a deep breath and give it all your might.
13:51Oh, you gotta bounce back.
13:53Let them know you're here to stay.
13:56Bounce back.
13:57And come back harder than you went away.
14:00Bounce back if you bounce.
14:02Get up without delays.
14:04It's a well-known fact to get back on track.
14:06You gotta go on track and bounce back.
14:09Hey, yeah.
14:15If you fall behind, you might not get where you're going.
14:19Cause when you lose the steps, the world can pass you by.
14:23You gotta pick up the pace and get your energy flowing.
14:28Give it your best and you'll soon be out of sight.
14:31You gotta bounce back.
14:33You gotta know you're here to stay.
14:36Bounce back.
14:37And come back harder than you went away.
14:40Bounce back if you're down.
14:42Get up without delays.
14:44It's a well-known fact to get back on track.
14:46You gotta go on track and bounce back.
14:50Oh, yeah.
14:52Bounce back.
14:56Bounce back if you're down.
14:58Get up without delays.
15:00It's a well-known fact to get back on track.
15:02You gotta go on track and bounce back.
15:05Bounce back.
15:06Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce.
15:09Bounce back.
15:18Hi, Matt.
15:20Are we gonna see another one of your puppet shows soon?
15:23No.
15:24No.
15:25No.
15:26Why?
15:29Are you giving up?
15:31Everything went wrong.
15:33We just couldn't make it work.
15:36Neither could Isaac.
15:37At first.
15:39Who's Isaac?
15:40Oh, way back before I started with the railroad.
15:46Oh, 1831 to be exact.
15:51One of the first railroads in this country bought an English steam locomotive.
15:57The engine came over on a sailing ship.
16:00Lots of pieces.
16:02Sort of like a big model.
16:04Now, the fellow who had to put it back together,
16:08and make it work,
16:10was a young man named Isaac Dripps.
16:14He was only 21 years old when he got the job of assembling a locomotive.
16:19It wasn't a success at first.
16:20Oh, he ran, and everyone came to watch it pump down the track.
16:24But it kept running off the rails, and its big wheels came loose, and it broke an axle.
16:31So, Isaac Dripps and his boss carefully studied what made the engine go off the rails.
16:38They added two little wheels in the front to help the big wheels go around the curve.
16:43He took off the wheels.
16:45He took off the big wooden wheels and made sturdier ones out of iron.
16:48Isaac made all sorts of little improvements that made that engine run better and better.
16:53The railroad used the engine for many years, and even gave it a name, the John Bull.
17:00Now, it's in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, and it's the oldest locomotive in America.
17:06What about Isaac?
17:07What happened to him?
17:09Well, Isaac became a very famous railroad mechanic, and he lived to a ripe old age.
17:18He didn't give up when things went wrong, and neither should you.
17:24I don't want to give up, but the man's coming back to take the puppets.
17:29Oh, is that the problem?
17:32We can fix that.
17:41And, uh, let's see what we have here.
17:49I remember putting on puppet shows when I was your age.
17:52All we needed was two things.
17:55A little old sock and a big imagination.
18:02Let's see.
18:05Ah!
18:14Now, look.
18:25Good night.
19:07Hi, look what I got.
19:08I have one, too.
19:09I like yours.
19:10I like yours, too.
19:13Matt, Tanya, look out.
19:15Some horrible beasties have eaten off your hands and they're crawling up your arms.
19:19Oh, these are hand puppets, see?
19:23Hand puppets.
19:25That's a relief.
19:26I thought you were being eaten.
19:28Does this mean you're going to put on another show?
19:31Oh, we don't know.
19:33We don't want to be made fun of.
19:35You mean you're not going to even try?
19:38Well, that's it.
19:40I'm not talking to you two anymore.
19:42I'll talk to the puppets.
19:44Hold them up.
19:46Imagine them not trying because they're afraid of being made fun of.
19:51Just think of poor James.
19:52The other engines made fun of him.
19:54And look what happened.
19:56What did happen?
19:57I'll tell you.
19:59Come along.
20:04One night, Henry and Gordon were alone with James.
20:07Although Sir Topham Hatt was beginning to think well of him, whenever a chance came, the other engines would talk
20:12of nothing but bootlaces.
20:14Remember when they had to use a bootlace to get you out of trouble, James, they would tease.
20:19James tried to get back by talking about Henry, who got shot up in a tunnel, and Gordon, who got
20:25stuck on a hill.
20:26But they wouldn't listen.
20:29You talk too much, little James, said Gordon.
20:32A fine, strong engine like me has something to talk about.
20:36I'm the only engine who can pull the express.
20:39When I'm not there, they need two engines.
20:41Think of that.
20:42I've pulled expresses for years, and have never once lost my way.
20:47I seem to know the right line by instinct.
20:51Every wise engine knows, of course, that the signalman sets the switches to make the engines run on the right
20:57tracks.
20:58But Gordon was so proud, he had forgotten.
21:00Wake up, James, said Gordon next morning.
21:03It's nearly time for the express.
21:05What are you doing?
21:06Odd jobs?
21:07Oh, well, we all have to begin somewhere, don't we?
21:10Run along now and get my coaches.
21:12Don't be late.
21:13James went to get Gordon's coaches.
21:16They were all shining with lovely new paint.
21:18He was careful not to bump them, and they followed him smoothly into the station, singing happily,
21:24We're going away, we're going away.
21:27I wish I was going with you, said James.
21:29I should love to pull the express and go flying along the line.
21:37Gordon, with much noise and blowing of steam, got ready to back onto the train.
21:53Sir Topham Hatt was on the train with other important people, and as soon as they heard the conductor's whistle,
21:59Gordon started.
22:00Look at me now, look at me now, he puffed, and the coaches glided after him.
22:05Poop, poop, poop, poop, poop.
22:06Goodbye, little James, see you tomorrow.
22:10James watched the train disappear, and then went back to work.
22:14He pushed some freight cars into their proper sidings, and went to fetch the coaches for another train.
22:20James had just brought the coaches to the platform when he heard a mournful noise.
22:26There was Gordon trying to sneak into the station without being noticed.
22:32Hello, Gordon. Is it tomorrow, asked James.
22:35Gordon didn't answer. He just let off steam feebly.
22:40Did you lose your way, Gordon, said James.
22:44No, it was lost for me.
22:45I was switched off the main line onto the loop.
22:48I had to go all round and back again.
22:50Perhaps it was instinct, said James.
22:53Meanwhile, all the passengers hurried to the ticket window.
22:56We want our money back, they shouted.
22:58But Sir Topham Hatt climbed onto a cart and blew the conductor's whistle so loudly that they all stopped to
23:05look at him.
23:06Then he promised them a new train at once.
23:09Gordon can't do it, he said.
23:10Will you pull it for us, James?
23:12Yes, sir, I'll try.
23:16So James was crumpled on, and everyone got in.
23:19Do your best, James, said Sir Topham Hatt.
23:24Come along, come along, Puff James.
23:26You're pulling as well, you're pulling as well, sang the coaches.
23:34Hurry, hurry, hurry, Puff James.
23:44Bridges and stations flashed by, the passengers cheered, and they soon reached the station.
23:50Everyone said thank you to James, and Sir Topham Hatt was very impressed.
23:55Well done, he said.
23:57Would you like to pull the express sometimes?
24:00Yes, please, answered James.
24:03Next day, when James came by, Gordon was pushing freight cars.
24:08I like some quiet work for a change, he said.
24:11I'm teaching these cars manners.
24:13You did well with those coaches, I hear.
24:15Good, we'll show them.
24:17And he gave his cars a bump.
24:20James and Gordon are now good friends.
24:22James sometimes takes the express to give Gordon a rest.
24:26Gordon never talks about bootlaces, and they are both quite agreed on the subject of freight cars.
24:34Hey, where are the puppets?
24:36I was talking to them.
24:39There you are.
24:40You never know if you can do your best unless you try again.
24:44The important thing is to have a go of it.
24:47Now, I gave you a story.
24:51And a dance.
24:52Can you give me a puppet show?
24:56But make sure that you're really ready first.
24:59Do a little planning.
25:04Whoa, whoa, whoa.
25:05Hey, what are those creatures?
25:08They're kind of weird looking, but I like them.
25:11Well, hey, what do you say we give them some backup music, huh, Tex?
25:16We're pretty far back as it is, right?
25:21Hey, puppets.
25:22Do you have those kids of yours ready yet?
25:26I'm waiting.
25:29Hello, Mr. Robot.
25:31Hello, uh, bird.
25:33What do you like to eat?
25:35I eat, uh, elevators and toy trucks, but no broccoli.
25:44Excuse me, has either one of you seen Matt or Tanya?
25:47Which one is Tanya?
25:49Tanya's a boy.
25:50Is Matt the girl?
25:51No, no, Tanya's the girl and Matt's the boy.
25:54I don't know any girls named Tanya.
25:56I know a girl named Matt.
25:58Maybe the boy named Tanya knows a girl named Tanya.
26:01The girl named Matt knows all the boys named Tanya.
26:05And there are, Daddy.
26:08Very good.
26:10Say, do you have room in this act for one more?
26:12I'll remember the music to Freight Train.
26:16Ah, totally rad.
26:19Think it'll help?
26:20Couldn't like.
