00:42the ring in the heavyweight division phil jackson and alex stewart that's alex stewart there yeah
00:46alex stewart looking over his fight by fight it looks like the who's who of the heavyweight division
00:51this man has been in with them all and he has come so close to being the heavyweight champion of
00:56the
00:56world but not quite there he would we thought phil jackson would have all those names that we see
01:04on the ledger of alex stewart in his record but phil jackson whenever he stepped up he faltered he
01:11stumbled and he got knocked out now he says though he has new management team he is staying in the
01:16gym
01:17longer he is running more miles in the mornings and he says now i'm ready to ascend back to the
01:22heavyweight
01:23division he wants to be a champion well these are two big big men as we take a look at
01:29how they stack up
01:30statistically against each other alex stewart two inches taller than jackson weighs six pounds more but keep
01:36in mind that stewart has come down from 247 in his last fight to that 232 number exact same age
01:4334 and in the
01:44reach stewart with a four inch advantage this should be a terrific bout don't blink on this one they're going
01:51to be
01:51one of the big bombs from round number one we go now to thomas triber and get the official

03:45see the
03:45instructions earlier okay i'm gonna expect i'm gonna demand a clean fight obey my commands protect
03:52yourself wash your low blows when i say break step back no punches no punches after the bell any questions
03:58here the questions here coach close coach close let's go now this should be interesting a lot of
04:05similarities between these two fighters phil jackson fought for the heavyweight championship of the
04:11world against lennox lewis was stopped in 94 by lewis in eight rounds that was the big night of his
04:16career
04:17ironically alex stewart has fought a lot of world heavyweight champions he fought evander holyfield
04:23mike tyson michael moore and george foreman but he fought them all when they weren't holding the title
04:28so none of those fights were world championship shots for stewart so he is still awaiting a world
04:34title bout if he ever gets one in his career both these guys have had big heavy hands throughout their
04:40career jackson has scored 37 ko's in 40 fights stewart and the red trunks 39 ko's in his 42 in
04:4825 in
04:49the first three rounds he is a very fast starter surprising to see that phil jackson has 22 ko's
04:55in the first three rounds phil jackson says in the ring i'm a boxer puncher his best punch
05:00he says the right hand alex stewart says his best punch is the left hook he also
05:05says he's a boxer puncher
05:10phil jackson walked into the police athletic league gym in miami he was 20 years old and he started
05:17boxing and went about 65 times in the non-paid ranks before turning professional and he did that back in
05:26december of 1988
05:31and jackson claims he's still a hungry fighter how could he still be a hungry fighter well
05:36he's got eight kids four sons four daughters that's a lot of mouths to feed and he's trying
05:42to make some money and he's trying to make some big money which he possibly could get if he could
05:47get a
05:47big victory here and then perhaps take on one of the young guns or one of the uh ranked heavyweights
05:53and a bout that would be even more meaningful but this certainly a very meaningful bout for these two
05:58guys tonight yeah it's uh they are standing at the last chance saloon jackson says now i know how
06:04important it is for me to win he says the shape conditioning is vital he says i'm running more
06:10i'm more focused on my career
06:15new alex stewart coming into this i think everyone in boxing does he says he's a dangerous fighter
06:20i have great respect for stewart and he says he's he's in my way though my way to ascending to
06:26the top of the heavyweight picture
06:28the fight plan for jackson was to go to the body
06:31oh whoa jackson first big punch of the fight stewart felt that one and back pedals immediately
06:37stewart knows he got a little buzzed by that one and he stepped back to try to collect himself and
06:43jackson trying to go to work
06:49still a half minutes ago in round one still time for jackson if he could land the right
06:54combination and that was a very good left hook that he dug in hard to the body of stewart
06:58and a good right hand he can't wait though stewart is hurt right now
07:02jackson still trying to pace himself trying to figure out what kind of arsenal stewart's going to bring
07:09there's that left hook from stewart axles alex stewart better get busy throwing punches or this
07:14fight's going to be over he's going to be knocked out they come to the end of round one
07:23using the first round as a testing round here is that right hand
07:26phil jackson landed that high on the head kind of on the temple of alex stewart in fact he hurt
07:32him so bad
07:33that at the end of the round when the bell rang alex stewart went back to phil jackson's corner
07:38you know there's been a few times in my career when i was hurt so bad that i wanted to
07:42go to the
07:42other corner i didn't want to go i didn't take a beating i didn't want to go back to my
07:45own corner
07:46but uh alex stewart when you know you are hurt but you don't go down you're stunned you're you are
07:52disoriented in the ring not quite sure what direction you're heading now that was certainly a telltale
07:58sign but i think you could tell even in that round as stewart lands his own right hand now that
08:03uh he was
08:04he was shaken up by that punch he stepped back and he moved away and he tried to gather himself
08:09before the end of the round but you know that he kind of looked like a veteran who knew he
08:12was
08:13buzzed a little bit and he did a good job he was definitely floating at the end of that first
08:17round
08:19stewart born in london lived there at an early age went as a teenager to jamaica lived there for
08:26five years was involved in all kinds of sports alex stewart in fact his favorite was rugby he's a big
08:31quite a rugby player in jamaica played for the jamaican national team at one point but then got
08:37involved in boxing did very well there and turned professional and obviously has done very well as a
08:43pro well his father was a cricket player and took him to the cricket grounds where he set him up
08:48with
08:48another fighter alex did well with the other fighter decided to start boxing had about 10 amateur fights
08:54before moving to jamaica he went 44 and six as an amateur alex did before turning pro back in
09:04september of 1988 and his greatest night in boxing probably was in a losing effort to george foreman i'm
09:12talking about alex stewart here he just fought a terrific fight against foreman he went down twice in
09:16the first round he appeared as though he was going to be finished off and won by foreman but somehow
09:20he came back and by the fight's end it was all alex stewart and as he lands a leaping right
09:27hand
09:27there and he really limped foreman's face into a distorted unrecognizable barbed world
09:33played a big night for him back in 1992 april of that year he said he started out wrong he
09:39thought
09:39he could ko foreman here is stewart trying to ko phil jackson good left hook from stewart jackson about
09:45to lose his trunks and there was a little left hook inside by jackson though that forced stewart to just
09:51for a second stop the assault good right hand from stewart and the referee is going to have to
09:57pick those trunks up or else we're going to have an x-rated boxing show here before too long
10:07oh how effective a jab would be from both fighters alex stewart knows how to jab he knows the
10:12importance of a left jab good bounce back round for alex stewart here after a big first round for
10:20phil jackson here in the second it was stewart who came back here we go round three one thing i
10:28liked about this i thought this was a great matchup made by matchmaker tom brown this was really one
10:33coming in that nobody seemed to know who was going to win this fight sean yeah really an outstanding
10:38matchup two fighters who have been to the top and been to the bottom of boxing and they both are
10:44trying
10:44to give it their all tonight because they know the significance of a win in this fight you know
10:48this a win tonight would put one of these fighters right back into the mix this heavyweight division
10:55two you're only as good as your last performance that's why both of them fighting fighting in this
11:02match putting their heart and souls into it alex stewart in much better condition than he was on
11:09the june of the 12th when he scored an eight round decision over a dual aziz mohaman an abysmal
11:14showing that night even though he won but he was out of shape weight 247
11:20that night and he really brought himself down for this one in good shape looked atrocious that night
11:25he said i took the fight on two days notice says i was a bit out of shape huh uh
11:30three of my fights
11:31fell out he says he admits his biggest struggle has been with himself he can just remain focused and remain
11:40concentrated upstairs at what business at hand he's a terrific fighter he's got some great skills
11:45says it uh he knows a lot about phil jackson he has a sneaky right hand and even knowing that
11:50he
11:50still got hit with it back in the second round he says a good puncher and he's durable his fight
11:55plan tonight for stewart was to back up jackson jackson doing a nice job of stepping around jackson said
12:03tonight he was going to try to go to the body of stewart and throw the right hand upstairs
12:11alex stewart coming back nicely from that
12:14dazing that he got in the first round from the right hand of jackson
12:17trying to land some power shots of his own we saw him as we talked about get really brutalized in
12:23round
12:23one against george firman i asked him what kept him going in that fight he just said it was hard
12:27he said
12:27i'm a warrior look i'm going to give it all i've got i want the fans to know that and
12:31i want them to
12:32feel that and and he's already shown that here again tonight you won't see alex stewart just laying down
12:39good job defensively by stewart there to get away from that right by jackson
12:45and jackson looks as though now he has a healthy respect for stewart's punch yeah well once you get hit
12:51from your opponent you have a definite quick healthy respect for your opponent never been hit with an
12:58easy punch they all hurt
13:04oh jab jab jab when you don't know what to do jab it keeps your opponent busy keeps something in
13:09his
13:09face it blocks his vision and then you can land your hard shots you set them up with a jab
13:14they think
13:15they're going to get easy jab punches that's when you bring in the big power
13:29this is round four scheduled for 10 heavyweights in action
13:35down goes stewart in the opening seconds of the fourth round a hard right by jackson
13:43steward taking the mandatory eight count you can expect that he'll get up which he does
13:47he actually stayed down till nine that time just what phil jackson said he was going to do
13:55he's going to bring in the right hand now he has to set that right hand up again now alex
13:59stewart
13:59knows the right hand is coming here's the left hook and he's down again for the second time in the
14:04round
14:06a tape hanging off of the trunks of the phil jackson
14:10steward looking right at the referee he'll probably try to get himself back in here remember
14:15he was down twice against foreman and came back and lasted the distance but here comes jackson a
14:20heavy-handed sword himself to try to finish off alex steward if he can
14:25phil jackson with four of his eight children in the stands here tonight watching him and cheering for
14:30their dad but alex stewart who also lives in florida with a wife and a youngster of his own
14:38to fight back so that he can continue on hard right by jackson oh these two are throwing bombs
14:46they're bringing him from down home sean yeah they know that they need to be throwing bombs too
14:52alex stewart knows he's been on the canvas twice he knows he can't go down again and he has to
14:56do
14:56something to beat phil jackson off of him jackson has big power in that right hand alex stewart cannot
15:02get hit with that right again he's got to carry that left hand up high look how high his hands
15:06are
15:06now he knows this is an experienced veteran 49 professional fights for alex stewart and 46 for
15:15phil jackson and yet it is stewart who's pushing back jackson who may be trying to lure stewart into
15:20a mistake so he can throw that right again yeah you know what you want to do is get your
15:24opponent
15:24rushing at you they can come in and take your power there's what phil's doing he's playing possum
15:30come on in here alex i want to show you my right hand and show you the lights
15:37alex stewart down twice in this round trying not to go down another time because that would end this fight
15:46bill jackson shuffling forward trying to fight find that right hand once again that has put stewart
15:51down here stewart trying to answer with his own left jab yeah but he's getting stewart too much time
15:56stewart's able to recuperate jackson has to hit him and hit him often you're not going to put a good
16:02fighter like alex stewart out with just one punch yeah you might knock him down you might knock him down
16:08twice but you're not going to knock him out with just one shot you got to put the combinations together
16:13if you feel jackson you start from the body and then work your way to the head
16:19with a few clinches in this heavyweight fight
16:24and referee jorge alonzo steps between the two and there were no punches thrown after that clinch
16:29stewart again knocks to the wrong corner again you are disoriented when you get knocked out and you don't go
16:36down
16:40stay here he is talking to stewart in the corner and this is why alex stewart is going to the
16:45wrong
16:46corners watch this crack and left leg goes numb down to the canvas he goes but stewart gets up a
16:56little
16:56bit later in the round running in he catches this left hook which also puts him to the seat of
17:02his pants
17:03just did everything he could to stay up the rest of the round knowing that alex stewart had been on
17:08the
17:08canvas twice in that round big concentration this is his career and he knows a lot of emotion going
17:14on in the head of alex stewart listening to tommy gallagher
17:22i thought referee jorge alonzo was a little slow reacting to that first knockdown that right hand put
17:28stewart down to one knee and jackson landed two punches after that and he tries to come right out
17:32and do the same kind of thing at the start of this round yeah you got to pick it up
17:35where you left it off
17:36he still may be reeling from those knockdowns in the fourth round that first knockdown was scored in
17:42the first uh 10 seconds of round number four here in the fifth jackson tried to come out and catch
17:48stewart by surprise once again this is a heavyweight 10 rounder here in miami rich morata sean o'grady
17:54ringside as barry tompkins takes the night off and we're watching heavyweights alex stewart in the red
17:59trunks and phil jackson who scored two knockdowns in round four in the black two knockdowns in round
18:06four and a staggering blow back in the first round from jackson he has power in that right hand you
18:12know that's what they've seen about phil jackson they really like him as a fighter he's a terrific
18:17puncher he's a big heavyweight he has good size he has good all-around skills but when he moves up
18:22in
18:22class he's just unable to deliver that right hand the way that he can in fights when he's in there
18:30when he is the favorite they want him to be able to pull that heavy lumber out in these big
18:36matches
18:37i tell you i really feel for guys boxers at this age 34 years of age because i think they
18:44know what
18:44their situation is sean they know that time is short and they know that they've got to win
18:47and they know that a loss would be devastating in this kind of a fight well they're all in a
18:52hurry
18:52at this age too you know athletes usually mature about 28 27 29 something like somewhere around
18:59there everybody's different but that's about the average and people once you hit 30 they start
19:06talking about you're being over the hill and that's what i hear from people who are 30 and over
19:13and i haven't made it yet at 20 they started saying that it was 24 my career was over
19:24but yeah when you start hearing those whispers and those rumors you really start thinking i wonder
19:29if it's really it's really that way i wonder if i am slowing you know stewart looks tonight like he's
19:36just
19:36a step behind he's just not quite there with phil jackson looks a little bit fresher a little bit more
19:44focused a little bit more intense
19:52jackson looks good tonight you know jackson recently changed management you wonder about the veracity of
19:57fighters doing that i change management but he says it rejuvenated his career at the time he was ready for
20:05a change well he signed with america presents earlier this year and he beat brian smith and i
20:11thought his last performance against gerard jones was very good maybe the best he's shown in years
20:15so far tonight phil jackson looking very good again against alex stewart as we hit the midway point
20:21of this scheduled 10 round heavyweight bounce
20:27you see phil jackson come out for round six of the scheduled 10 round heavyweight bout
20:32against alex stewart both of these guys on the goal ranked in the top 10 trying to get back there
20:39again rejuvenated their careers and here they meet at the late stage of their careers at the age of 34
20:44for each man both of them 34 but jackson doesn't look 34. alex stewart a little slow lumbering you know
20:52he
20:53dropped down 17 pounds from his last fight that may have zapped him when you take off a great amount
20:59of
20:59weight like that 17 pounds it just makes you lethargic in the ring alex stewart hard to believe
21:05he hasn't fought for the championship because he fought all those heavyweight titles evander holyfield
21:10he fought twice and the first one he really gave an outstanding account of himself in that first
21:14fight with holyfield actually at one point in that fight hurt holyfield and had him going but
21:18couldn't follow it up and he fought holyfield the first time they were
21:22each undefeated stewart was 22 and 0 holyfield was 24 and you just wonder about something you know
21:29crossroads uh type thing guys meeting a fork in the road like that had stewart been able to follow
21:34up and hand holyfield the defeat in that fight when he had him hurt what would it have meant in
21:39terms of
21:39their careers you know down the line the rest of the way oh yeah well this is this is a
21:43fighter that i
21:44really had my eye on early in his career alex stewart he said holyfield style was uh one that just
21:49gave me
21:49problems he's quick he can punch he takes a good shot and he has tremendous heart he always
21:54continued to come back every time that stewart would score on holyfield evander would score back
22:03they're not supposed to do that that's what mike tyson thought too good right hand by alex here
22:10important right hand stewart has to start landing his big punches
22:16this is the last half of this round of this fight
22:22another right hand by stewart caught jackson off guard a quick right that he snuck in jackson has grown complacent
22:46he's been more effective because he has landed more right hands this this round and when he was having difficulty
22:55in the previous rounds is getting that left hook working
22:59when you start working the right hand your opponent looking for that well both of them battling yeah
23:04that was a nice exchange stewart landed a little earlier and a little more but jackson may have had
23:08the hardest punch in that flurry combination is now the key both fighters at the working combinations
23:13one shot's not going to do it
23:17we come to the final seconds of round number six this was a close round tough one for the judges
23:22here
23:22stewart trying to stay in this fight
23:27round seven scheduled for ten fight time on fox presenting heavyweights and a good competitive
23:32heavyweight battle here tonight between two guys who have fought the best in the world in their career
23:36won another big shot phil jackson in the black trunks alex stewart in the red trunks stored in much
23:42better condition than he's been in for a while trying to get back in this fight
23:45where he was knocked down twice earlier in the bout and i think it was an unlikely possibility sean that
23:50this fight would build a distance but i think we're faced with that right now well you have two power
23:54punchers remember back in the fourth when stewart was down two times it looked like the fight was
23:59over but he did everything that he could to stay on his feet he was even hurt back in the
24:03first round
24:04and he has not been able to hurt phil jackson the way that jackson has hurt stewart
24:19it was interesting that stewart told us tonight when he came up and said hi before the fight
24:25he admitted to being nervous which i think most fighters are before their fights but they'll never
24:31never admit it never let him see you sweat speaking of sweat look at all that sweat on the back
24:37of alex
24:37let's do it work out of there let's go alex you got to bring him on using a lot of
24:43water you know
24:44what these fighters do is they dry out before the weigh-in so the weight can be low they don't
24:49take
24:49any water for a couple of days and they load up after weigh-in all that comes out when you
24:55work out
24:57hot miami night like this
25:03work inside here yeah nice finishing left hook to that exchange by jackson who has the advantage
25:09in the inside fighting do you think sean i think jackson does he has uh obviously that has been able
25:14to land with that right hand he has been cautious of the left hook of stewart he told
25:19me that he knows alex is a good left hook puncher he's going to carry his right hand higher tonight
25:25which
25:26he has done he's virtually shut down that left hook let's do it you know whoever wins this fight
25:34it will be one of the very biggest wins of their career their long careers nice left hook by jackson
25:39and that got uh stewart's attention once again he dazed him with that and he rocks him with another
25:44left hook this is what we have needed from phil jackson throughout his career i mean when he stepped
25:49up to fight the fighters like brian neilson linux lewis jeremy williams the reason the fighters that
25:55he should move up to another level razor running come on come on you know he said that reddick fire
26:00just
26:00wasn't ready for the for the big fight atmosphere and i was psyched out by the big crowd and the
26:08undercard of one of the tyson fights yeah you know he he says phil and i i think he's probably
26:13right
26:14but while he always prepared mentally and physically and he prepared physically rather but now he's
26:18there's mentally much better than ever and he's shot down this is how important focus is look at the
26:29eyes of phil jackson he is so focused on alex stewart he takes the shot a hard punch from alex
26:35stewart a left hook and he comes back with a left hook of his own he is a determined man
26:42right now phil
26:43jackson is more determined than alex stewart a couple of real amiable people outside the ring
26:53yeah they're very uh friendly guys both articulate guys nice guys just plain uh good guys
27:01uh as we uh told you earlier dads although uh phil jackson brings it to an extreme with four
27:10sons and four daughters eight children many of whom are here tonight as long as with a couple of
27:14nephews as well as he brought that's why he's cheering section is here
27:20the crowd favorite of course of course the crowd is the kids
27:26good left hook again by phil jackson
27:30stewart who punched himself still coming back with perhaps some of that power taken out of his punches
27:35by some of the big shots that he has absorbed from phil jackson well stewart was hoping to get jackson
27:40backing up tonight but tonight it has been action jackson this is what we expected from
27:47to see from phil earlier in his career but he never produced
27:54and stewart true to his word is not quit when he got in trouble he said i'll give it all
27:59i've got
27:59it's the way i fight that's always fought in the past i'll give everything i have and he certainly
28:04has done that tonight well when he went down two times back in that fourth round he could have stayed
28:08down you know he got up he's a tough warrior he's a veteran he's got respect self-respect and respect
28:14for the sport some pride and he's still fighting back
28:19he only has two more rounds in a minute to do it
28:2339 chaos and his 42 wins but has never scored a late ko not this late his latest seven rounds
28:31on a couple of occasions phil jackson has scored two eight round knockouts
28:37the last one back in 1990
28:41this is a close round stewart would love to put this one in the bank if he could because he's
28:45trailing
28:46on points in all likelihood and needs to get some rounds
28:54he's got about less than a half a minute to come up with something big maybe to steal this round
29:00and he's got a phil jackson who has slowed this round taking a round off a window of opportunity open
29:10to stewart but he's closing as the seconds count down a little uppercut that he snuck in there alex
29:16stewart as we come to the end of round eight very entertaining fight we've still got two rounds to go
29:25six minutes of boxing left between these two heavyweights alex stewart screen left in the red
29:30trunks phil jackson and the black trunks
29:35phil who has lived all his life right here in miami
29:40and alex stewart who now lives in safety harbor
29:47it is a jackson who is in all likelihood well ahead but a stewart who is still full of fight
30:00two knockdowns in this bout both recorded by phil jackson
30:09and look at stewart now he is certainly knows the score he knows what's happened
30:19he is punching like he wants a knockout jackson the one holding look at that right arm of jackson
30:26tying up just hold on jackson knows he's ahead in this fight
30:32both these guys been around a long time alex stewart remember him from the 1984 olympic
30:37games in los angeles and he was hopeful that he'd win a medal but he lost in the second round
30:42to a swedish fighter two-time national golden gloves finalist
31:00only pushing with his punches now both of them it is a very physical fight at this point tying up
31:05pushing pulling
31:09starting the top of the head there seemed to
31:13strike a chord landed by jackson who hasn't gone up gotten off with the frequency here in the last
31:20two rounds that he was earlier not with that right hand anyway there's what he wants
31:24he didn't hit the mark but he wants to let that right hand go you got to turn that right
31:30hand
31:30over too thumb up thumb down turn it you pronate the ball blow right at the point of contact adds
31:36a
31:36little bit of snap to it a little crack oh the baseball player tracking the bat martin mcguire
31:45and the golfer stewart staying right on top of jackson here in this round what do you think about that
31:51strategy fun well i think stewart is the one who needs the punching room he's the one that needs
31:56the power good strategy for phil jackson he's smothering the power of stewart and stewart knows
32:02what he needs at this point is a ko he is not going to get this decision well although jackson
32:10has done
32:10almost nothing in this round until that left hook yeah final 10 seconds you got to pour it on when
32:18you
32:18hear the final 10 seconds you gotta try to steal the round
32:30be a tough guy punch punch punch
32:34he knows you gotta punch punch punch
32:38phil jackson deep breath before the round begins phil looks very wary over there in that corner
32:44oh he should he has fought a tough durable 10 rounds nine rounds now to the 10th yeah and he's
32:52got a
32:53developing knot over the right eye let's untie it they should have untied that between rounds
33:01oh fortunately it happened late in the fight for jackson it hasn't really played a part at all
33:08but it hurts well these two will feel this tomorrow and the next day a lot of punches a lot
33:16of shots
33:18nice right hand counter by stewart yeah stewart looking look at these look at these punches from stewart
33:23now looking for the ko
33:30this is time ticking away for stewart
33:34phil jackson tie up hold on phil jackson ever since that seventh round jackson's been kind of
33:41going through the motions he's really slowed down a window of opportunity open for alex
33:48well the last thing anybody thought coming in here was that this one would go the distance
33:52jackson with 37 ko's out of 40 wins stewart with 39 ko's out of 42 wins each of them have
33:59only gone the distance three times to get a victory in their career
34:10full jackson helped by the forward he has been staying active his fourth fight in the last nine
34:16months jackson goes down but that is a slip that is not a knockdown let's go and jackson is just
34:21getting himself warmed up again oh and a good right hand from stewart jackson could still get a knockout
34:29here he has hurt again hurt stewart on a couple of occasions this round stewart wobbled once more
34:39each of these rounds looking desperately for one big chance at a big fight and they're taking off a
34:46point from alex stewart for holding excessive holding on phil jackson i think that's an unwarranted
34:53point taken off myself there hasn't been any warnings to store for for holding but jackson going in
34:58looking for a ko now well it's not going to matter because stewart is so far behind in this fight
35:03he's about to lap himself stewart needs the ko that's what tommy gallagher tried to impress upon
35:09him between rounds this corner man said you got to punch punch punch go for the kale and he gets
35:14punched backing up stewart's hurt again you know when you have a fighter who is aging like alex stewart is
35:20and i know these two are the same age but stewart's been through too many tough fights back-to-back
35:25tough fights has taken it out of him now he can see the punches coming but he cannot get out
35:29of the
35:30way of them you know you have a fighter who is aged
35:37but as he said a warrior to the very end he would not quit he'd give it all he got
35:42and he's hanging
35:43in there here tonight against the heavier punching of phil jackson who it appears to us is about to win
35:49a decision and perhaps move on to a big fight against one of the young guns coming up or against
35:54an established contender that could thrust him right back into the picture nice uh bit of applause
36:02for the two combatants here a good fight between these two and alex stewart cut late in the fight
36:07and they have to attend to that now but the fight is over and i think both guys are glad
36:10yeah cut and
36:11swelling around that left eye but phil jackson has to be happy with his performance tonight he uh
36:19had looked as though his career was on the down slide but tonight he showed us that uh
36:26his career is not over and that he does want to step up to the plate thrust into the top
36:3210.
36:33well we are going to come back and get the official decision we think it will be phil jackson but
36:39only
36:39the judges can render that verdict so stay with us and we'll get that official decision when we come
36:44back to fight time on fox
36:51all right back in miami once again on fight time on fox rich moran along with sean o'grady we've
36:56just
36:56witnessed the heavyweight 10 rounder is for the one of the few times in either of these men a career
37:02they have gone the distance two knockout artists two 34 year old knockout artists phil jackson and alex
37:09stewart grasping at what they hope will be an opportunity to fight a big fight once again
37:17it has gone to the decision to the surprise of many and we will get that decision right now from
37:23thomas
37:23striver ladies and gentlemen after 10 rounds of boxing we go to the score cards and we have a unanimous
37:31decision all three judges are in agreement scoring about exactly the same 94 to 93 all in favor of your
37:40winner phil jackson
37:45well that is surprisingly close 94 to 93 the score on all three judges cards which would indicate that
37:55they've given alex stewart six rounds apiece the judges stewart uh came through and perhaps in those
38:03last couple of rounds was stealing rounds by throwing more punches than jackson but nonetheless the heavier
38:09punching of jackson and the ability to score those two knockdowns now obviously critical insofar as
38:15the scoring was concerned as jackson wins a unanimous decision by the scan margin of 94 93 on all three
38:22judges scorecards standing by with the winner right now sean o'grady sean phil jackson you turned the
38:28clocks back tonight you know a lot of people thought your career was over why did you look so impressive
38:33tonight because i i think i wanted it um first of all i'd like to thank god lord and savior
38:39jesus
38:39christ giving me the strength to come out here to invite somebody like alex stewart yeah some you
38:45know people say that my career is um it's over but that was one of the reason why i wanted
38:51to show
38:51them tonight that my career is not over what did you prove tonight i proved that i could go 10
38:56hard
38:57rounds take a pretty pretty decent punch and come back and give some punches of my own you told me
39:03tonight
39:03you were going to use the right hand over the top and that's exactly what you did what did tonight
39:08tell
39:08you about yourself told me i could punch we knew that i think alex knows that too well it told
39:15me
39:15you know that um with a little concentration and a little help from my training them and
39:23that encouraged me to throw them away and right prove to me if i listen to my trainers
39:29that i can get the job done well you listen to your your trainers and scoring the knockdowns tonight
39:33let's take a look here you know you caught him with some nice right hands and you're not known as
39:37a
39:38left hook puncher but this right hand back in the fourth round put him down did you think he would
39:43get up yeah i thought he'd get i i thought i just grazed him with that right hand if i
39:47could have
39:47caught him solid he wouldn't have never got up yeah and then he got up from that and you caught
39:52him
39:52with a left hook but you're not used to throwing that left hook are you that's what people think i'm
39:55not my deadly punch is the left hook really and here it comes the left hook he was on the
40:02inside you
40:02liked fighting on the inside he didn't move as much as you wanted him to no if i would have
40:07expected him to that was a jab oh my goodness you seem to handle him with ease tonight did you
40:15expect
40:15that going in yeah most definitely why tell me why my trainers uh put me through a terrific training
40:21method uh it's good to have somebody encouraging you you know to tell you hey man you got the power
40:27you can put him away you know what 34 years old this has to give you something good for the
40:32future
40:32what would you like for it to happen next in your career give me someone in the top 10 anybody
40:36in
40:36the top 10 man let's let's bring it on i'm ready you know that i showed the night that i'm
40:40ready
40:40and yeah bring them break let them bring it on i'm ready okay well i think rich marotta will
40:45probably bring him on rich this is a man that wants somebody in the top 10 can you get him
40:49someone
40:50yeah i'll be on the phone first thing in the morning to the promoters that america presents
40:53and see if they can work that out but phil jackson deserves a shot at this little something bigger
40:58now he's made a nice comeback in his career four very impressive wins in a row we'll be right back
41:12while we have a moment let's flash back to a collection of classic boxing rounds from our fight
41:17time on fox telecasts january 16th from atlantic city heavyweight frez akendo takes on rockman green
41:28touch and step back final round here is uh frez akendo and rockman green come to the center of the
41:34ring and the fight could hang in the balance all right step out of there both of you come on
41:39green
41:42green trying to stay a little closer looks like and hits uh kendo with a combination not a big one
41:46but
41:46nonetheless a combination good right hand from akendo maybe the best punch of the fight
41:59so just like that previous fight against sam williams okendo has some rough moments and then
42:03all of a sudden comes alive
42:11left hand knocked green backwards yeah and that was a jab if i'm not mistaken i think it was
42:16okendo like where'd he go i think green's hurt big right hand drops it
42:23right on the button well i don't know that last round of what was a wake-up call for okendo
42:29who just
42:29got to jump on him right now six seven eight step forward what a shot and okendo lost a few
42:35seconds
42:35in the count there because uh he had gone away from the neutral corner well he could jump on him
42:40right
42:40now because green is still gone down he goes and that's it
42:46very wisely done by uh frez akendo knew he had his man in big trouble knew he was only going
42:51to take one
42:52punch and just got on him right now a lot of fighters don't recognize when their man is in
42:58serious trouble okendo certainly did in that case
43:04well after green's very best round okendo came on and look at that right hand a crushing right
43:11he put up he put his body completely into it
43:16he's already coming forward leaning forward so it's the whole weight of his body completely behind
43:23that punch and right on the button that's like one of those video games and here's the second and
43:28final knockdown again with the right hand and okendo just like that last fight has a few rough
43:34moments and then comes back to ko his man june 19th kenny bowman versus derrick harman a light heavyweight
43:41roll round number two and richard in bowman's corner greg page is as animated as i have ever
43:48seen greg page and during the course of the between rounds period as he was giving instructions he
43:53it was getting more heated and his voice was escalating with each sentence until he was
43:58yelling to where you could hear him in any part of this arena by the end of that 60 seconds
44:04and there's a left hand and that buckles the knees of bowman
44:09and harvin trying to jump on him he looked as though he was going to fall
44:14two three four five what a surprise here seven eight nine not going to make it it's over
44:29interestingly enough bowman got up immediately upon the count of ten while not moving for those ten
44:34seconds he got up immediately and walked to his corner and he walks not wobbly leg over to his
44:41opponent now that is a little strange isn't it and that of course coming on the heels of that lecture
44:48that he got from greg page
44:53well that is shocking
44:56i believe it was the one punch the left hand
44:59and there's arnie rosenthal his manager elon heim one of his the assistant trainers joe goose and his
45:05trainer now let's take a look at the knockout now because it was most unexpected bowman backed into
45:11the ropes kind of lunged straight forward there's that shot to the side of the head
45:17that buckle him it looked like he was going to go down there you could tell he was hurt he
45:20covered up
45:24and the accumulation of those this is good work by harman all these punches are landing body and head
45:29and all that was excellent work following the knockout bear as you could see he was looking
45:33over his opponent seeing where he had the opening and then going after him that was very impressive
45:38as derrick harman undefeated in 14 fights stealing the thunder of ken bowman who had done that exact
45:43thing against murky sosa just two fights back october eight alex stewart versus ezra sellers
45:51heavyweights get it on so this guy's still waiting for a break and with all those guys
45:55being heavyweight champions that he fought barry he never has actually fought for the championship
45:59that was all at a time when all of those guys were not holding the title he's still very optimistic
46:04that his chance will come and of course he needs to get by ezra sellers tonight in order to make
46:10that a feasibility
46:13they're working on what might have been a little nick up above the the eye between rounds i didn't see
46:19any blood but
46:29seller son of a minister grew up in washington dc first got involved in boxing there but
46:36he really didn't do well until he went down to north carolina and all of a sudden he found himself
46:40sparring with some real quality fighters. Oliver McCall to be with one.
46:46Britt Cooper. Tim Witherspoon. In fact, he sparred with Tim Witherspoon to get ready for this fight.
46:53Witherspoon had to get ready for his own match against Andrew Gulotta.
47:00Stewart getting home with some shots really for the first time in the fight.
47:03Sellers is fairly quick-handed. We'd like to see him be a little busier.
47:11But Sellers feels that the only downside of his future is the fact that he's a little lighter than most
47:20of the top-notch heavyweights at around 215.
47:23Although he looks bigger, doesn't he?
47:26Yeah, you know, I think he's grown into the division pretty nice.
47:29He doesn't look real soft like some of these blown-up light heavyweights or cruiserweights.
47:35Looks fit, to be sure.
47:40Here's those quick hands. He really should let his hands fly some.
47:44Sellers really punches very quick, and I think Stewart might have some difficulty with that quickness tonight if Sellers throws
47:50some punches.
47:51Move your head!
47:52Now, the opponent tonight was supposed to be Phil Jackson, but Jackson, now there's a good right hand, and down
47:57goes Sellers.
48:00Now, Sellers ran into trouble against Marion Wilson as he was caught flush.
48:05He appears to be all right, but let's see how Stewart plays this.
48:08He's going to take a long look into the eyes of Ezra Sellers.
48:12That was a terrific shot by Stewart.
48:14He said he's always been known as a puncher.
48:16He's had big moments against great fighters.
48:20Right hand by Sellers, and down goes Stewart!
48:25Stewart got careless.
48:29We may have to call this a 10-10 run.
48:31Yes, there you go. I'm not doing it again.
48:33Somebody else go down.
48:36I think Stewart just got careless.
48:38I think a look at Sellers, and you knew he wasn't hurt.
48:43Stewart, and I think it was wishful thinking on the part of Stewart.
48:49Another good right hand by Sellers.
48:51Stewart, down again!
48:56And this time, he may not make it.
48:58He needs the ropes to help him get up.
49:03And he's up, but he's wobbly.
49:07And a good long look here.
49:09He is...
49:13Gets it through the round somehow.
49:16Three knockdowns in the second round,
49:17and he's got to get over to Kevin Rooney and Quick.
49:20He is stumbling back to his corner.
49:23Well, wasn't that something?
49:24He appeared to have the fight almost won with that big shot.
49:28It drove Sellers down, but you were right to warn everybody
49:31that you'd seen Sellers go down before and get up
49:33and have the resourcefulness to get himself right back into a fight.
49:37I think that was a flash knockdown.
49:38I don't really think Sellers was hurt by that.
49:43And again, you can look into the fighter's eyes generally
49:44and know if he's really hurt or look at his legs,
49:46and I didn't see that in Sellers.
49:48He's smart doing.
49:51Let's take another look.
49:52Got a lot to talk about here.
49:55All right, but very surprised.
49:56It comes like a flash out of nowhere.
49:58There's a left, a follow-up right hand,
50:00and the legs just collapse underneath.
50:02Ezra Sellers, down he goes.
50:06Sellers was able to score two knockdowns himself.
50:09This was the second one.
50:11Stewart was already hurt and headed down.
50:15December 3rd, Phil Jackson fights Ray Annis.
50:19Round number two upcoming.
50:22Annis in the white, and Jackson in the black trunks.
50:27And I'm sure in Jackson's corner,
50:28they talked about doing a little bit more business.
50:31Yeah, he needs to get a little busier.
50:33Annis, I think, probably just wanted to come out here
50:35and have a reasonable first round after that disaster
50:37that was last time here.
50:39And he certainly had that.
50:40He may have even won the round.
50:42All right, Tompkins, Rich Murata.
50:43We're at Casino Magic here in Bay St. Louis.
50:45This is our co-main event.
50:47Hector Camacho, Jr. has won the first half of our co-main,
50:50and now it's Phil Jackson and Ray Annis, heavyweights,
50:55with a possible title shot on the horizon.
50:58Jackson in range for a right hand.
51:01Was a little short with it.
51:04Jackson clearly doing more business here.
51:06Yeah, he did some good work to the body
51:07just before he missed those head punches.
51:09That's probably not a bad idea.
51:11Just get back.
51:12Let's go, Queen.
51:13Ray Annis was born in Haiti.
51:16Stayed in Haiti until he was 10 years old.
51:17He remembered what he thought was really a lot of poverty.
51:22He felt it was a poverty-stricken nation.
51:24But he said he did not grow up under those conditions,
51:27under real poverty-stricken conditions.
51:29But still, he and his mother moved to the United States,
51:32in particular Brooklyn, New York,
51:34and he said just basically in hopes of living a better life.
51:36Well, step back.
51:37Well, growing up under a baby doc Duvalier,
51:43a dictatorship in Haiti.
51:44Not, at that time, a pleasant place to live.
51:47When he came to the U.S., he participated in just about every sport,
51:50starting at 10, except boxing.
51:52He did not start boxing until he was 20 years old.
51:55He still has really broken a sweat.
51:57And the other thing that's happening here in the second round
51:59is Phil Jackson is starting to get a little bit more in punching range.
52:04And he's just getting into the fight, I think, Phil.
52:08Phil Jackson, father of eight children.
52:12And as he put it to us this afternoon, I love them all.
52:15He's got his second son, Joey, with him tonight.
52:20He said Joey's his biggest fan, and like a little trainer for him.
52:24You know, the last time when we saw him down in Miami,
52:26he was talking about Phil Jackson when he fought Alex Stewart.
52:28He walked in that night, he looked like the Pied Piper or something.
52:31There was about 12 kids hanging around him.
52:34And they were all his kids, his nephews, nieces.
52:36No holding, no holding.
52:37He had brought his own fan club.
52:39Stop the punching, stop the punching, no.
52:39Step out, stop the punching, stop it, stop it, stop the punching, no.
52:42He said the only problem with having his son on the trip here
52:44keeps him on talking until 2 o'clock in the morning.
52:50Every punch in this fight from both men is designed to knock the other man out.
52:54And there is a huge left hand.
52:58Usually it's the right cross, but Phil Jackson, this fight's over.
53:01There's no way Annis gets up from this.
53:03It's over.
53:03What?
53:04A shot.
53:05Annis is still on.
53:06He can't let it continue.
53:07I don't believe.
53:08Annis is just way out of it.
53:10You all right?
53:11Come on.
53:11He's head hit very hard.
53:12You don't want to let this go.
53:16You know, usually it's the right cross with Jackson.
53:19I think that's the first time we've really seen him do that kind of thing.
53:22Barry with the left hook.
53:23That was a tremendous shot.
53:24And I'm glad the referee stopped it because it was one of those double concussions.
53:27He hit his head very hard on the canvas.
53:31And remember, you and I, about an hour before the fight,
53:33were tapping on a ring here just to see what this ring was all about.
53:36It's a very hard ring.
53:38It's not a well-cushioned ring.
53:41Phil Jackson showing he's still got it.
53:43And he is fighting him better than ever.
53:45And this is a guy who once fought for the heavyweight championship against Lennox Lewis.
53:48It's going to be a one-punch knockout.
53:49There's your punch of the year right there.
53:51Classic one-punch knockout by Phil Jackson.
53:55Look at that shot.
