00:00:00In such bizarre fashion last July, the fight so marred by fouls and riot that the central truth of that
00:00:08shocking night at the Garden was for many obscured.
00:00:11That a little-known Polish immigrant named Andrew Galata had brutally manhandled former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe.
00:00:17Surely the second time around would be different. Surely a reconditioned Bowe would be better.
00:00:23Surely Galata would have learned not to throw low blows.
00:00:30Saturday, December 14 in Atlantic City must have been another night when werewolves howled in the forest and vampires rose
00:00:37from their crits.
00:00:38If Riddick Bowe makes it out of the round, it'll be an act of Herculean courage.
00:00:43Another whipping for Bowe. Another crescendo of fouls by Galata.
00:00:51He can't stop himself.
00:00:54Blood, guts, and insanity before the wildest crowd in recent boxing history.
00:01:02And this is rapidly becoming like a Rocky movie.
00:01:07And another bizarre finish for two fighters who are now forever paired in the public mind.
00:01:13Hard left hand by Galata. Bowe lands a right. They fire away at each other. Unbelievable!
00:01:22Last Saturday, Riddick Bowe against Andrew Galata for the second time.
00:01:29On a rainy night in Atlantic City, with the boardwalk almost deserted, thousands of fight fans crowded into the Atlantic
00:01:37City Convention Center.
00:01:38This arena, the scene of so much significant recent boxing history, but never, never before anything quite like this.
00:01:48Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley. Welcome to this special edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
00:01:53Without any question, the most overused word in modern sports commentary is incredible.
00:01:59You're well advised to stay away from that word every chance you get.
00:02:03But I must tell you that the events you're about to see cannot be described in any other way.
00:02:07This was, quite simply, an incredible recitation of the precedent which had been established back in July in Madison Square
00:02:15Garden.
00:02:15As we called the fight live in the Atlantic City Convention Center, working with me, as always, was HBO Boxing
00:02:21Analyst Larry Merchant.
00:02:22Larry, so much had been said about Bowe Galata won.
00:02:26So many different things had happened that night in Madison Square Garden.
00:02:29What intrigued you about the rematch between these two fighters?
00:02:32What intrigued me first and foremost was that the winner was the one who demanded the rematch,
00:02:39which tells you just exactly how bizarre things have gone between these two fighters.
00:02:43What intrigued me that the winner's trainer quit on him and called him a shot fighter, in effect, a lost
00:02:51cause, Eddie Futch, having done that.
00:02:53What intrigued me was wondering, seeing Riddick Bowe getting himself into the best kind of shape he can get himself
00:03:02into now,
00:03:02going back to four years when he first fought Evander Holyfield in his weight,
00:03:07whether he could give us a best imitation of his best self.
00:03:13You know, he was always a delightful kid who could imitate Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby and Muhammad Ali.
00:03:20All we wanted was an imitation of himself.
00:03:22And what intrigued me was, if he could give an imitation of himself, could Andrew Galata raise his game to
00:03:31that level?
00:03:32And we found that Andrew Galata could raise his game to that level, but he couldn't raise his body punches
00:03:39to that level.
00:03:41And so what intrigues me now is a fight between two fighters who seem fated to this kind of result.
00:03:50Absolutely. As bizarre as anything we've ever had the privilege of seeing.
00:03:54And, of course, a big punching battle between two big heavyweights.
00:03:58When you have a fight like that, it's reassuring to be able to call it in the company of our
00:04:01own giant heavyweight, George Foreman.
00:04:03And, George, that night in the Atlantic City Convention Center, you made the most prophetic observation early on in the
00:04:10evening
00:04:10when you suggested that you could see Galata getting in trouble for low blows again in this fight.
00:04:15Is there just some weird chemistry between Riddick Bowe and Andrew Galata?
00:04:20Or is Galata every minute of his fighting life an uncontrollable time, Bob?
00:04:24Yeah, Galata reminded me of so many young people I met in high school when the principal was giving them,
00:04:31hey, you better stop this, you better stop that, and they'd shake their head.
00:04:34And I knew, we all knew, we were going to keep being bad.
00:04:37And I saw this in our pre-fight interviews.
00:04:40This guy has, he intends on being a bad guy.
00:04:43Shady character.
00:04:44If he can elevate himself and leave that stuff behind,
00:04:46he could be the man, the man who could be king, Andrew Galata, if he'd only stop and listen.
00:04:53Because, let's face it, that mean streak is in some ways one of Galata's biggest assets in the ring,
00:04:59but it is also, ultimately at this point, his downfall.
00:05:02Let's go back now to Saturday night in Atlantic City.
00:05:09Tale of the tape for the battle between Riddick Bowe and Andrew Galata.
00:05:14And even though we think of Galata as being much younger
00:05:16because his relatively sparser exposure makes it seem that way,
00:05:21they are only one year apart in age.
00:05:24Bowe with a one-inch height advantage.
00:05:26Galata outweighs him by four pounds this time around
00:05:29after Bowe outweighed Galata by 11 pounds in the first fight.
00:05:33And Galata has a three-inch reach advantage over Riddick Bowe.
00:05:39Punch stat numbers, Larry Merchant.
00:05:41These are the lowest connect percentages for Bowe
00:05:45since we have been tracking him in his first fight with Galata,
00:05:48which bespeaks his uncertainty after Galata was beating him to the jab,
00:05:56which we'll now see.
00:05:58You can see that Galata was throwing more jabs and landing them,
00:06:01and he threw Bowe off his game.
00:06:04Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:06:08The Riddick Bowe, Andrew Galata fight is scheduled for ten rounds.
00:06:11The standing eight count is in effect.
00:06:13There is no three-and-out-down rule.
00:06:16Only the referee can stop the fight,
00:06:17and he cannot be saved by the bell at any round,
00:06:19including the tenth and final round.
00:06:21Jim.
00:06:23And the significance of the entry music for Bowe, quite obvious.
00:06:27His manager, Rock Newman, sang this past week,
00:06:30I can't understand why anybody would want to root
00:06:33for a Polish-born fighter against an American.
00:06:36The Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe.
00:07:07The Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe.
00:07:36The Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe, the Riddick Bowe.
00:08:06And there's the record for Riddick Bowe.
00:08:0839 wins, the one loss in the second of his three meetings
00:08:12with Evander Holyfield.
00:08:1432 KOs for Bowe.
00:08:31And Andrew Gulotta chooses to enter the ring
00:08:34to the strains of the Polish National Anthem.
00:08:38A Tory KOs for Bowe.
00:08:40A
00:08:58C'mon.
00:08:59Move, paper.
00:08:59Move, it is.
00:10:12I've always thought there was a kind of medieval splendor to these walk-ins.
00:10:18This is dramatic stuff.
00:10:30Polish-American tears of joy and excitement in the arena already tonight, even before the action begins.
00:10:37Andrew Galata was 28-0 when he took the ring against Riddick Poe in Madison Square Garden in July.
00:10:42So the only loss of his career came in his most stirring performance.
00:10:51And let's go up to Michael Buffer for the continuation of this drama.

00:11:54And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action, referee, Eddie Cotton.
00:12:01And now, ladies and gentlemen, by way of Caesars Atlantic City, for the thousands in attendance, and the millions watching

00:12:30Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble!
00:12:36Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing white, trimmed with red, and weighing in at 239 pounds.
00:12:45His professional record, 28 victories, with 25 knockouts, and only one loss.
00:12:52That fight is qualification to the man he faces tonight.
00:12:56He is the pride of Poland, now living and fighting out of the Windy City, Chicago, Illinois.
00:13:03Ladies and gentlemen, introducing, Andrew Goloda!
00:13:21And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner.
00:13:26He's wearing red trim with gold, and weighs 235 pounds.
00:13:31This 1988 Olympic silver medalist, now has a professional record of 39 victories.
00:13:3832 by KO with only one defeat, he is the pride and joy of Brooklyn, New York, a two-time
00:13:46world heavyweight champion, and former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,
00:13:55critic, Big Daddy Bo!
00:14:01Ooh!
00:14:05Go take it baby, big charge, keep on, do your work, do your work, do your work, go!
00:14:10acabat, you got to see,
00:14:14Andrew, Louie!
00:14:18Over there!
00:14:23Go Rocky!
00:14:24Good dog!
00:14:24Lift up!
00:14:25Go, come on!
00:14:26Go!
00:14:32All right, boxers, you received your instructions in the dressing room.
00:14:35Anything below here is low.
00:14:37Anything below here is low.
00:14:39Okay?
00:14:40Let's keep your punches up.
00:14:41Obey my commands.
00:14:42Let's touch gloves.
00:14:42Have a good, clean fight.
00:14:43Let's touch gloves.
00:14:46Riddick Bowe comes out of the mean streets of Brooklyn and rose to prominence.
00:14:53Andrew Gulotta rose from the mean streets of Warsaw.
00:14:59Let's hope they conduct themselves with honor tonight.
00:15:02And you saw the police uniforms at ringside so woefully absent on the night of July 11,
00:15:09so fully in evidence everywhere in the arena here tonight.
00:15:13But still, this is a live, electric crowd as round one begins.
00:15:17Riddick Bowe wore into the ring a robe with the name of his mother, Dorothy Bowe, on the back.
00:15:23She's the one who told him after the first fight,
00:15:25if you're going to get your ass whipped like that, you ought to retire.
00:15:34In the early stages, both fighters,
00:15:36they were both looking to establish the dominance of the left jab.
00:15:40Riddick Bowe went down this time to the body jabbing.
00:15:56No mystery to what Gulotta wants to do.
00:15:58He works off the jab as well.
00:16:12The issue here is whether Riddick Bowe has put it together again.
00:16:21A lot of people expected Bowe to come out firing and try to make an impression early on Gulotta.
00:16:26If so, he's trying to make a tactical impression.
00:16:30There is no immediate firestorm here.
00:16:34Riddick Bowe is going down, even trying to throw a right hand to the body.
00:16:37And there's a vicious left jab that landed flush for Gulotta.
00:16:50Missing with right hand.
00:16:52This could be the beginning of the old stuff.
00:16:55Riddick Bowe want to stay in charge here.
00:16:57You've got to make sure every right hand thrown connects.
00:16:59Gulotta doubling the jab and jabbing right through Bowe's guard.
00:17:03They're tripling the jab.
00:17:04And the Polish-American contingent in the crowd already rising from their seats.
00:17:20Andrew Gulotta is a lot better fighter moving backwards than he is coming forward.
00:17:25Riddick Bowe should move back a little bit.
00:17:28Let him come in to his right hand.
00:17:30Since you can't find it reaching at him, let him come to you.
00:17:32Bowe not yet really stepping forward and extending on the jab.
00:17:36Gulotta has been able to pop his as he does there.
00:17:44So far, round one of Bowe-Gulotta two looks a lot like round one of Bowe-Gulotta one.
00:17:59Wild misses by Bowe.
00:18:01Gulotta had a very precise round.
00:18:07Riddick Bowe tonight without the legendary Eddie Fudge.
00:18:10All right, now listen to me, Bowe.
00:18:11For the first time,
00:18:13Bell Torrance with the Q-tip behind his ear is now the chief trainer.
00:18:16But throw your jab and pull back, you know, here you come.
00:18:19Oh, just take that jab and keep that hand right in front of you, okay?
00:18:23When you use your jab, step in and don't pull away from those punches.
00:18:27When you jab, jab with him.
00:18:28Jab with him.
00:18:29And keep your hands up as you walk to him, okay?
00:18:31Now, you've got to establish the jab.
00:18:34Establish the jab with the jab in the fan.
00:18:36But keep your hands up as you do not pull back from the shot.
00:18:38Has Gulotta again destroyed Bowe's jab?
00:18:41Take a look.
00:18:46And there again.
00:18:49That was the same sequence.
00:18:52What I noticed, George, in the first round,
00:18:55is that Bowe, who is a naturally aggressive fighter,
00:18:58was trying to be more measured.
00:19:00And that he seemed a little uncomfortable or awkward in that stance.
00:19:05That's true.
00:19:06And each time that Gulotta was able to land with that left jab,
00:19:09Bowe was getting ready to throw a right hand.
00:19:12In round one by Punchstat numbers,
00:19:15Andrew Gulotta landed almost twice as many punches as Rick Bowe, 26 to 14.
00:19:19He was more accurate with the jab as well,
00:19:22although Bowe, to his credit, attempted 41 jabs in the first round.
00:19:31Last time, Bowe would land a left jab
00:19:33and then move his head back
00:19:35and Gulotta would catch him on the counter.
00:19:37He's got to move his feet.
00:19:40Gulotta landed his first left hook about 10 seconds ago.
00:19:47So far, Gulotta fighting a tactical fight
00:19:50at distance from Bowe,
00:19:52apparently confident that his longer reach
00:19:55and stiffer jab can give him the edge from out here.
00:20:00Hard power punches from Gulotta.
00:20:03Bowe goes down.
00:20:05Second time in his career that Bowe's been down
00:20:08and he's wobbling badly.
00:20:10This was a good left-right combo by Gulotta.
00:20:13Plenty of time left in the round
00:20:15and Gulotta looks as calm as an assassin
00:20:17as he steps back in.
00:20:19And his first punch is to the body.
00:20:25Bowe's not answering here.
00:20:28Rick Bowe doesn't know where he is.
00:20:31And let's see if Gulotta can finish, George.
00:20:34You tell us about the techniques he'll use.
00:20:36Well, he caught Riddick Bowe not prepared,
00:20:39but now when a guy knows you're going to knock him out,
00:20:41he has a tendency to cover up.
00:20:42And Gulotta has to be careful.
00:20:44Don't give him any courage by landing
00:20:45and letting him land a good shot.
00:20:47So far, Bowe hasn't been able to counter with anything.
00:20:50He's trying.
00:20:51He gets a left hand in there.
00:20:55Now a right hand for Bowe as he finds himself a little bit,
00:20:58but Gulotta wobbles him again.
00:21:00Gulotta to the body.
00:21:04Bowe finally holds on.
00:21:06Gulotta's landed a lot of leather here.
00:21:08If Riddick Bowe makes it out of the round,
00:21:10it'll be an act of Herculean courage.
00:21:15Gulotta again to the body.
00:21:16Hard right hand shot.
00:21:18And another.
00:21:19Bowe's taking a vicious storm of punishment.
00:21:26A left hand counter landed for Bowe.
00:21:29He's not really sure what he's doing in there.
00:21:31He's just reaching and throwing.
00:21:33Look at him.
00:21:34Look at him.
00:21:34No, no, no, no.
00:21:35Eddie Cotton starts to talk to Gulotta about low blows.
00:21:39And this will save Riddick Bowe in round two.
00:21:43He's taking a hit, but he's taking a point away from Gulotta.
00:21:48And he's giving Bowe a chance to revive.
00:21:52Okay.
00:21:54And there's a cut over or under Gulotta's eye.
00:21:57I'm not sure which.
00:21:58But Gulotta has a seemingly dangerous cut.
00:22:02I think it's on the left eye.
00:22:06Gulotta was very smart.
00:22:07He went back to the body.
00:22:10Ten seconds left in the round.
00:22:23I gave Gulotta a two-point round because it was a three-point round and a point got taken away.
00:22:32I was trying to tell you, the middle of the ring.
00:22:40Ice the ice.
00:22:41You cannot.
00:22:43I'm sorry, I got that water.
00:22:48A sensational round.
00:22:50Where is the cut?
00:22:52It looks like it's in a bad place right over the eye on the lid.
00:22:58Take a look at the knockdown.
00:22:59The punch landed high.
00:23:03You saw it landed almost on the scalp, George, above the ear.
00:23:09He came back with that left hook, which he so often does.
00:23:14Yeah, you pointed out, George, how Gulotta finishes every combination with the left hook.
00:23:18He's well-schooled.
00:23:19You always finish up and get yourself back in position with your left hook.
00:23:28Eddie Fudge said that Riddick Bowe is a lost cause.
00:23:32Is he?
00:23:33He comes out fighting.
00:23:35He's no lost cause, but he's in there with one tough fighter.
00:23:39Bowe landed a long right hand, which could start the bleeding on Gulotta's left eye again.
00:23:45Gulotta seems a little bit more tentative, perhaps worried about the effect of that cut.
00:23:53This is where experience comes in.
00:23:55You've been in that shape before.
00:23:57Fight your way out of it.
00:23:58Gulotta, he's picking up experience.
00:24:01One thing is for sure, George, as Bowe lands another long right hand.
00:24:06Riddick Bowe might save himself with right hands and power punches here,
00:24:09but Gulotta has the longer, stiffer, better jab again.
00:24:12Now, Gulotta is starting to slow down and looking for one shot, too.
00:24:16Good job, bro.
00:24:16Listen up.
00:24:18You see, he lands the left hook.
00:24:19He doesn't come back with his right hand.
00:24:21If he keeps the combinations up, believe me, he can get Riddick Bowe right back in that same condition.
00:24:26Gulotta landed a low blow in there, and if he does that a few times,
00:24:30that could get him thinking some negative thoughts.
00:24:33Already, he's got to worry about the left eye.
00:24:35And he's forgetting how to position himself away from Riddick Bowe's uppercut.
00:24:39Let's go, let's go. Step back, step back.
00:24:40Bowe's making a nice little comeback at close quarters
00:24:42and getting inside Gulotta's jab.
00:24:45When they step back out at distance, Andrew dominates.
00:24:49Why is Gulotta staying in so close, do you think, George?
00:24:52And he's not doing it like he did the last time.
00:24:54He's allowing Riddick Bowe to come up with that uppercut.
00:24:58Yeah, he's not turning sideways as effectively.
00:25:00And he was so perfect last time.
00:25:02This time, he's got to be more perfect with punches.
00:25:05Blood all around Gulotta's left eye.
00:25:07Hard to tell whether it's damaging his vision at this point.
00:25:11Now he's starting to blink, and no question,
00:25:13Bowe is targeting the left eye with those looping overhand rights,
00:25:16and that's a good punch for Riddick.
00:25:23Let's go.
00:25:27If Gulotta can only step back there and get his combinations back up,
00:25:30he can regain control of this fight.
00:25:34But Gulotta's thought process doesn't seem to be as clear now
00:25:37as it was in the first two rounds.
00:25:39And Bowe is going to the power punches that might turn it around for him.
00:25:45Let's go.
00:25:56Gulotta is a good fighter, but Riddick Bowe is possibly the bravest fighter I've ever seen in the heavyweight division.
00:26:01Next to Muhammad Ali, he is brave.
00:26:02What makes you say that?
00:26:03You knock him down, he's just seemed to have forgotten all about it.
00:26:07Hey, I'm in control.
00:26:10Hard left hand by Gulotta.
00:26:12Bowe lands the right.
00:26:13They fire away at each other.
00:26:17Unbelievable.
00:26:19And Bowe can take credit for that round because of the extra conditioning that he put himself through.
00:26:27Come on, guys, right hand.
00:26:31I got it.
00:26:31I got it.
00:26:32You're all right.
00:26:33You're all right.
00:26:34You're all right.
00:26:35Listen to me.
00:26:35Come on.
00:26:37Huh?
00:26:37No.
00:26:38You're all right.
00:26:39You get out there and fight now.
00:26:40This is a championship.
00:26:41You throw the right hand.
00:26:42You throw the right hand.
00:26:43The key man in Gulotta's corner is cut man Joe Sousa.
00:26:46Right there.
00:26:48He's one of the best in the business.
00:26:49This guy's ready to fall down.
00:26:50This guy's ready to go.
00:26:51One combination.
00:26:52You have to step him in.
00:26:52This is your time to stand up and be a man.
00:26:54One combination.
00:26:55Let's put those combinations together.
00:26:56One, two.
00:26:57Right hands, left hooks.
00:26:59Understand me?
00:27:00You've got to fight this bastard.
00:27:01When you get up off this chair this time, you fight.
00:27:04You understand?
00:27:05Let him go.
00:27:06We're going to try to see where the cut comes from.
00:27:08Oh, that's the butt.
00:27:12There you see the deliberate butt, which caused Gulotta a point in the first round.
00:27:33Gulotta must go right back to the basics.
00:27:35It all happened because he was boxing really bold.
00:27:40Gulotta flirts with low blow danger again and lands a little counter left hook in there.
00:27:45Gulotta you saw landing a hard right hand.
00:27:47Riddick comes to the body.
00:27:50Riddick Gulotta fighting with a nothing to lose attitude now.
00:27:54He was almost gone on this evening, but now he's back in it big time.
00:27:59And Gulotta stumbles.
00:28:04Riddick Gulotta has never been knocked down, but he will be in a few seconds if this keeps up.
00:28:12You got seven.
00:28:17You got seven.
00:28:18All right.
00:28:19Eight.
00:28:20All right.
00:28:20Let's go.
00:28:20You ready to go?
00:28:21You ready to go?
00:28:22Let's go.
00:28:28Riddick Gulotta seems to be doing it all with overhand rights.
00:28:36Well, let's see if Gulotta has the stuff that Bowe had when he came back.
00:28:41Bowe landed a vicious right-hand uppercut,
00:28:43the kind that he couldn't land in the first fight.
00:28:47Gulotta seems not fully in control of his senses here.
00:28:50He's thrown a lot of punches below the belt, Gulotta, here.
00:28:53And the referee seems to let it all alone.
00:28:56Referee Eddie Cotton is 240 pounds.
00:28:59That's good, but he's never had a fight of this magnitude before.
00:29:03That's bad, and this is rapidly becoming like a Rocky movie.
00:29:15Only Gulotta can...
00:29:16Low blows by Gulotta, and Eddie Cotton will pull him away.
00:29:19Excuse me, Jordan.
00:29:20You're right. It's time to warn him now.
00:29:22He let it all alone for a few rounds.
00:29:24Now the referee gives an honest-to-goodness warning.
00:29:27And Gulotta rests on Cotton and got himself some rest.
00:29:31And Bowe tried to end the fight with one sweeping right hand,
00:29:34and Gulotta dunked it.
00:29:42He can't stop himself.
00:29:54A fighter who simply cannot stop himself from throwing low blows.
00:30:01Stay in the corner. Stay in the corner.
00:30:03Jim, this is rapidly becoming a 10-7 round because Riddick's winning a round.
00:30:08And Gulotta's going to lose one point for the knockdown and one point for the low blow.
00:30:11Eddie Cotton just deducted a point for the low blow.
00:30:14So it's going to become a big 10-7 round for Riddick Bowe.
00:30:17And the odd thing about it, however,
00:30:19however, is that it's giving Gulotta a chance to rest from the barrage.
00:30:23So it's paying off for him, except the corner point.
00:30:26You can see in close.
00:30:28He wants to punch back.
00:30:31He doesn't move down to punch up.
00:30:34A body punch should be punched in an upward arc.
00:30:37He loops those punches.
00:30:39Irony upon irony.
00:30:41Bowe got a rest when Cotton spoke to Gulotta about the intentional headbutt.
00:30:46Now, Gulotta gets a rest as Cotton talks to Gulotta about low blows.
00:30:52Riddick Bowe now should have a straight right hand.
00:30:55He wouldn't miss, but he keeps going over top.
00:30:59Hard right hand lands for Gulotta as Bowe is missing with wide-winging shots.
00:31:05Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.
00:31:07Good job. Good job. Come on.
00:31:08Come on. This way. This way. This way. This way. This way.
00:31:10Somebody said a heavyweight Hagler earns.
00:31:14I think we've already had him.
00:31:17One good fight.
00:31:19Dry intensity.
00:31:22What next?
00:31:24I want all straight punches.
00:31:26And God damn it, step the jab in.
00:31:28No more body punches.
00:31:30You've got to go to the head with this guy.
00:31:32I'm for Custer to go to the head with this guy.
00:31:34Straight right hand. You can't miss him.
00:31:36And come back with the left hook.
00:31:37He shot, Andrew. He shot.
00:31:39He can't stand.
00:31:45Let's watch the knockdown.
00:31:47Good right uppercut seemed to do the most damage.
00:31:50That hurt Gulotta. He's trying to hang in and goes down.
00:31:54Big right hand.
00:31:58Seconds out. Seconds out.
00:32:00There's the punch that did the most damage.
00:32:04Seconds out.
00:32:05And you heard from the corner of Gulotta, no more body punches.
00:32:10He should have had that instruction in July and he would have won the fight.
00:32:16But can he remember it in the heat of battle?
00:32:19I don't think so.
00:32:20Gulotta only threw eight jabs in that last round.
00:32:23And just quickly to recap, both fighters have been down.
00:32:26Bowe was down in the second.
00:32:27Gulotta was down in the fourth.
00:32:28Harold, how do you have it?
00:32:29Two rounds apiece, but 37-35 in the all-important point scoring in favor of Riddick Bowe.
00:32:36Because Andrew Gulotta has already lost two points from referee Eddie Cotton.
00:32:40Taking away a point for the headbutt, a point for the low blow.
00:32:43And Riddick Bowe gets an extra point for the knockdown.
00:32:45Now, if he's taken two points already and we're only in the fifth round,
00:32:48is Andrew Gulotta headed for another disqualification?
00:32:51I have it 37-36 because I thought there was a three-point round earlier with one point deducted.
00:32:58In the knockdown round.
00:32:59Riddick Bowe is tired.
00:33:07And so is Gulotta.
00:33:09And they both got a right to be.
00:33:19Folks, this has nothing to do with anything except who can hit who harder.
00:33:24And as much as Gulotta won the tactical battle in the first fight,
00:33:28I think the tactical battle is shifting Bowe's direction here.
00:33:33If he's going to be strong enough over the course of the fight to hold up.
00:33:36Because as you point out, George, he's breathing hard and looks exhausted.
00:33:40That's true.
00:33:41And sometimes when you take that weight off incorrectly,
00:33:43these are some of the things that happen to you.
00:33:46You can be in control.
00:33:47The next thing you know, you're out of control.
00:33:49Hard shot by Gulotta.
00:33:51Bowe is wasted again.
00:33:55That's a knockdown.
00:33:57That's another knockdown.
00:33:59Count has begun at ringside.
00:34:01Cotton gets Gulotta to the neutral corner.
00:34:04Seven.
00:34:05Eight.
00:34:06Okay, you have to go.
00:34:08Okay, you got eight.
00:34:09Let's go.
00:34:10That is a very wobbly, glassy-eyed Bowe.
00:34:14And Gulotta starts to the body and takes his time wisely.
00:34:20Couldn't finish him in round two.
00:34:22Got another chance here.
00:34:24But now Gulotta looks tired.
00:34:27Switches to southpaw.
00:34:35That left hook might have done it.
00:34:38Gulotta throws a body punch, flirting with disaster.
00:34:43The referee should make Riddick Bowe get off those ropes.
00:34:46Bowe takes a hard left-hand shot.
00:34:48Gulotta misses again with the left that would have done it.
00:34:52Right hand lands for Gulotta.
00:34:55No room for Bowe to fall down.
00:34:57Ropes are holding him up.
00:35:02Gulotta rubbing Bowe in the face with his gloves.
00:35:05He's flirting with being disqualified.
00:35:06And he doesn't have to do it like this.
00:35:10And again, Bowe survives.
00:35:13And I gave another three-point round.
00:35:16It's time to Gulotta.
00:35:39That was the punch that set up the knockdown.
00:35:42A very good straight right hand.
00:35:44You see that Bowe is already reeling around the ring.
00:35:48And the punch again on the top of the head.
00:35:51And here will come the knockdown.
00:35:57And this is the end of the round.
00:36:03Riddick Bowe has taken a lot of punches, big punches in the last few years.
00:36:08I don't know how long he can take this.
00:36:11And tactically in round five, Gulotta regained his senses and threw 35 jabs, landing 22 of them.
00:36:18That's what set up the assault.
00:36:20And Bowe is going right to the ropes.
00:36:22So you wonder how his legs are holding up, George.
00:36:26Oh, I don't think there's much on Riddick Bowe holding up that well.
00:36:30Gulotta has got to go to the body, jab him to the body, and then bring his left hook back
00:36:34up.
00:36:34And he'll have a knockout.
00:36:36Bowe looks defenseless for the moment.
00:36:42This is indeed a courageous performance by Bowe, who seems not to have any of his faculties as he stands
00:36:49in front of the menacing Gulotta.
00:36:53And now Eddie Cotton's going to warn Gulotta for rabbit punching.
00:36:58And incidentally, guys, Gulotta has not only that cut over his eye now, but he's got a cut on the
00:37:03left side of his lip that goes all the way through, from inside the mouth to outside.
00:37:08So Joe Souza is under enormous pressure between rounds to keep Gulotta in the fight.
00:37:17Gulotta's jab is moving Bowe.
00:37:20That jab is moving a 235-pound man, George.
00:37:24You know, Riddick Bowe is not moving his head at all.
00:37:26He bends down right into Gulotta's power.
00:37:29Well, Gulotta's got a chance to pile up points here if he can avoid throwing low blows.
00:37:34And Bowe is just looping wild shots, but he's coming back again.
00:37:39Intelligently, Bowe leans all over Gulotta and gives him no room.
00:37:42Bowe seems, every time he throws a right hand, he just seems to foul out himself.
00:37:47Lotto threw another body punch, flirting with disaster again.
00:37:52Bowe lands that long right hand, but doesn't have much on it.
00:37:57Who's in better condition?
00:37:59Who wants it more?
00:38:13At this point, Riddick Bowe punches his head.
00:38:16They've got no sting on him at all.
00:38:19Gulotta, all he has to do is just stand up there to him and land three punches, and Riddick Bowe
00:38:22is on the floor.
00:38:23But Gulotta dropped his right hand, and Bowe almost nailed him with a wild left hook.
00:38:27That would have changed the fight one more time.
00:38:33Just to be standing up in there, Riddick Bowe is showing a powerful force of will.
00:38:41One good right hand by Riddick Bowe.
00:38:47Gulotta seems to sense there's no power on Riddick Bowe's right hand anymore.
00:38:53Bowe's mother, Dorothy, so disturbed by what she saw in their first meeting, isn't watching the fight tonight.
00:39:01That's a quick thing.
00:39:02Southpaw again.
00:39:04And he switched back.
00:39:05They've done a very good job on Gulotta's eyes as well.
00:39:09They're not bleeding or bothering him.
00:39:11And he landed a right cross in the closing seconds of the round, and I don't know what's keeping Bowe
00:39:15on his feet.
00:39:16And even if he survives this and should win, this may end his career, the punishment he's taking tonight.
00:39:23End his career as a top big-time heavyweight.
00:39:26I want straight punches to this guy's head.
00:39:29I want you straight to the head.
00:39:30You got this guy ready to fall down.
00:39:32Make him fall.
00:39:33Turn him, turn him, turn him.
00:39:34Don't stand in front of him.
00:39:38Stay in the center of the ring.
00:39:39Step around this man.
00:39:41Do not go back.
00:39:42Get control of yourself right now.
00:39:44Get control of your mind right now.
00:39:46You keep those hands up in front of you.
00:39:48You keep that jab hand going.
00:39:50You understand?
00:39:50I want to see doubles.
00:39:51I want to see double jabs.
00:39:53Right hand.
00:39:53On the inside, make him work a little short uppercut.
00:39:56The guy is dead tired, but he'll see you tired.
00:39:59Okay?
00:40:00I'm not tired.
00:40:00Okay?
00:40:01No second.
00:40:02All right.
00:40:03All right.
00:40:03Now this time, good job.
00:40:05Come on, your baby's over there howling.
00:40:07Come on, your baby's over there howling.
00:40:08Get out there and fire them.
00:40:16Is it already the seventh round?
00:40:20Amazing.
00:40:32Riddick Bowe seemed to be taking control with his jab, but every time he throws a right
00:40:37hand, he seems to fall into Galata's power.
00:40:41Bowe getting something of a second wind here to begin round seven.
00:40:44Although, he still looks wobbly most of the time.
00:40:48Galata just missing short with the right hand.
00:40:57That's got to put Bowe in trouble again.
00:40:59The second one of those right-handed shots landed flush.
00:41:07How much of this can Bowe take?
00:41:10Galata is very smart.
00:41:11He's not throwing a lot of power with those punches.
00:41:13He's just throwing them for the sake of connecting.
00:41:15And that's doing more trouble to Riddick Bowe than anything.
00:41:18Yeah, it's keeping Riddick back on his heels.
00:41:21It's stopping him from mounting any offense of his own.
00:41:25And it's keeping Galata from having any blood problems with the cuts over his eye and under
00:41:31his mouth.
00:41:36Bowe landed a counter shot there.
00:41:38Right hand and then a left two as Galata backed away.
00:41:41But basically, this is target practice for Galata, who snaps Bowe's head back again with
00:41:46the right hand.
00:42:00Hard right hand by Bowe.
00:42:02And Galata takes it and answers with a combo.
00:42:11Riddick Bowe is probably wondering, why am I so weak?
00:42:14I see it all, but I can't do anything about it.
00:42:17You lose weight improperly, it'll happen every time.
00:42:21George, he trains for three months.
00:42:24But maybe he brought himself down a little bit too fine.
00:42:28Over-trained.
00:42:29Whatever the case, those punches aren't doing him any good.
00:42:33And maybe too fast.
00:42:34He's in shape.
00:42:35He's just not able to do anything to protect himself.
00:42:37Well, he started training camp at 282.
00:42:39Lost 47 pounds.
00:42:41Came all the way down to 235.
00:42:42Did it in a relative hurry because he was proud that he was at fighting weight for a
00:42:46few weeks before this bout.
00:42:48But, George, you say that's not all good.
00:42:51No, you just got to make sure you got the right trainer.
00:42:53Eddie Fudge being in that training camp could have made a lot of difference because you
00:42:56got to know when to tell a fella, lay off, lay off.
00:42:59He seems to have won it just too badly.
00:43:04If this fight goes ten rounds, that'll be the biggest upset since Holyfield over Tyson.
00:43:10Is Bo playing possum?
00:43:12No, he's not.
00:43:15I think that round could reasonably have been scored a two-point round because Bo absorbed
00:43:21a terrible beating.
00:43:24How you feel?
00:43:25I'll take it.
00:43:25I'm a good one.
00:43:25He's off the rope.
00:43:29How you feel?
00:43:30Okay?
00:43:32Now, listen.
00:43:33If you don't show me something this round, I'm going to stop it.
00:43:35The guy ain't doing nothing.
00:43:36Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:43:38Now, take a deep breath.
00:43:39The guy can't stand up.
00:43:41Take a deep breath.
00:43:42Breathe.
00:43:42Now, tell me what you're going to do.
00:43:44You're going to jab, right?
00:43:45You're going to jab.
00:43:46You're going to put a straight right hand behind him.
00:43:47You got to stop it.
00:43:50Golada is relentless.
00:43:52He's in better shape.
00:43:55His head is clear.
00:43:57He's trying to get through Bo's defenses, taking his time, looking for one big shot.
00:44:04That almost was it.
00:44:07And in Bo's corner, they were saying to him, if you don't do something here, we'll stop
00:44:13the fight.
00:44:14Believe me, they wouldn't do him an injustice.
00:44:16You heard Thel Torrance saying, I'm going to stop it if you don't show me something.
00:44:21Harold, how you got it?
00:44:22Jim, five rounds to two, but only 65-63, Andrew Golada.
00:44:26The reason he's not ahead more on the points is because he lost those two points that Eddie
00:44:30Cotton took away.
00:44:31But still, five to two, 65-63, Andrew Golada.
00:44:35My punch stat numbers, round seven was a brutal massacre.
00:44:40Golada landing 43 power shots to only six punches for Bo.
00:44:46And there it is again.
00:44:50Riddick's going to have to hope to get lucky and answer this with a haymaker.
00:44:53Because when they start to box again, Golada has all the answers now.
00:44:59I don't think that Riddick's going to have another haymaker in his bag.
00:45:13It's seldom that you see heavyweights take that many shots without going down.
00:45:17So these are the kind of fights that damages a young man's career.
00:45:22Bowe's 29.
00:45:23Hard right hand.
00:45:25Golada ate two right hands there.
00:45:29But comes back with a brutal shot of his own.
00:45:33Where did that come from?
00:45:34Where did Riddick Bowe find that?
00:45:36Some reservoir of courage and will.
00:45:38This may well be the end of his career near the top of the heavyweight division.
00:45:42But he has shown you a lot of heart.
00:45:47Riddick Bowe went downstairs this time, maybe accidentally, maybe not.
00:45:52And Golada was right there on the belt line again.
00:45:55Mostly he's staying upstairs because it's so easy.
00:45:57He fires a left cross out of the south cross stance and then eats a jab and it snaps his
00:46:03head back.
00:46:03Again, it looks like Rocky in there.
00:46:17Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it.
00:46:21Stop it, stop it.
00:46:22Stop it, stop it.
00:46:22Stop it, stop it, stop it.
00:46:23Stop it, stop it.
00:46:23Stop it, stop it, stop it.
00:46:24Stop it, stop it, stop it.
00:46:26Golada does so much better when he throws little short punches without too much power on them.
00:46:31He never can miss.
00:46:32But when he throws the big shots, he seems to miss and give Bowe more courage.
00:46:36He's doing some damage out of that south cross stance, George.
00:46:39He's landed the left cross twice out of the south cross stance.
00:46:42Now as he sets the front, Riddick Bowe gets in a couple.
00:46:45Let's go, let's go, let's go, stop it, stop it, stop it.
00:46:51The referee is looking really good at Riddick Bowe now.
00:46:57Remember, Riddick Bowe had three hard fights against Evander Holyfield.
00:47:03He's had other fights that he won in which he absorbed a lot of punishment.
00:47:07Sometimes a fighter is old when he's 29.
00:47:10Well, if you're in Bowe's camp and you're looking for some sign of encouragement, here it is.
00:47:15Bowe's gone more than eight rounds four times in his career.
00:47:18Golada only once.
00:47:19And Golada has in the past shown a tendency to tire down the stretch.
00:47:24He doesn't do it as you are.
00:47:26It's a shame.
00:47:28Come on, fill up your lungs here.
00:47:30He doesn't do it as you are.
00:47:31Get your arms down off the ropes.
00:47:33Get your arms down off the ropes.
00:47:34Okay, okay, boom.
00:47:36This guy's dead tired, but you've got to show me something, okay?
00:47:39Take a deep breath.
00:47:40Give me a deep breath.
00:47:40I'm down, baby, relax.
00:47:42Give me a deep breath.
00:47:43Let's see more double jabs.
00:47:45Good, strong.
00:47:46You've got to step into him.
00:47:47You can't lay it in.
00:47:48Step in with your jab.
00:47:50Right hand behind him.
00:47:51This is the ninth round coming up.
00:47:53We've got two rounds.
00:47:54Andrew, you've got to pick it up now.
00:47:55Andrew, you've got to snap your jab.
00:47:57Let me see that strength you've got now.
00:47:59You're the strength.
00:47:59And just with the left hand, okay?
00:48:06There's Rock Newman, Bo's manager, seated in the second row, pretty close to ringside,
00:48:11trying to get some signals to Riddick through some of the delays earlier in the fight.
00:48:15Now just watching and hoping.
00:48:17Wipe that corner up.
00:48:19Get him to wipe that corner up.
00:48:21Round nine of a scheduled ten.
00:48:23Less than six minutes to go.
00:48:25It's been an unbelievable war.
00:48:28Riddick Bo's body seems to have been the only thing that's whipping him.
00:48:31This body just doesn't know how to control this 235-pound.
00:48:36Bo's still got some quickness.
00:48:37Yeah, but he's knocking himself out with those big right hands when he misses.
00:48:44What a job Joe Souza has done with Galada's two cuts.
00:48:48If Andrew wins the fight, Souza's one of the heroes.
00:48:53Now Galada goes to war in the corner just above us, trying to put Bo in George Foreman's lap.
00:49:01He almost did.
00:49:05Galada's doing right to measure Riddick Bo.
00:49:08This is right hand.
00:49:09Don't try to move with one shot.
00:49:11Do it with an accumulation of little shots.
00:49:13Problem is he can't go to the body, George.
00:49:15He doesn't dare.
00:49:16A lot of slips as he tries to throw there.
00:49:18And just pops Bo with a couple little shots inside.
00:49:22And lands another solid right.
00:49:30And Riddick Bo shows unbelievable guts.
00:49:44Good body punch.
00:49:45Now that was not low and it hurt Riddick Bo.
00:49:50Counter right landed for Bo.
00:49:52And Galada backs up and stops punching.
00:49:55Still more than a minute to go in the night.
00:49:59Trouble for Bo now.
00:50:00If he somehow manages to hurt Galada, he might not even know it.
00:50:08This is one of those fights that speaks for itself.
00:50:13Now the blood streaming from the cut above Galada's left eye.
00:50:16Galada got hurt that time.
00:50:18Riddick Bo doesn't even seem to know it.
00:50:21It'll be interesting to see if Bell Torrance would stop it after this round.
00:50:25Or if he'll let his man go out for the tenth.
00:50:28Bo hasn't shown much in this particular round.
00:50:31When you get to this point of a fight, it's not about what you see outside.
00:50:35It's about what they have inside.
00:50:38The referee is deciding not to even bring in those low shots now.
00:50:42He's not even talking about them.
00:50:44He's allowing them to throw low if they happen to do it.
00:50:48Stop punching. Stop punching. Stop punching. Stop punching.
00:50:50Two exhausted warriors.
00:50:53Bloody, sweaty, hurt.
00:50:57What else is there, George?
00:50:59Boy, this is the pain.
00:51:01Semi-conscious.
00:51:03Low blows!
00:51:04And down goes Bo again!
00:51:06Yeah, that's it.
00:51:08And Cotton is not thinking disqualification.
00:51:13He's calling the fight over!
00:51:15That's it.
00:51:16He's calling the disqualification.
00:51:18He's disqualified Gallardo again!
00:51:22That's right to do this, Dad.
00:51:27That's right.
00:51:27No, no, he's deducting points.
00:51:29He didn't stop the fight.
00:51:30He's deducting points.
00:51:32Larry Hazard came into the ring and told Cotton to take a point.
00:51:36What's going on here?
00:51:37Well, they might think that's the end of the fight.
00:51:39Disqualified!
00:51:40He disqualified.
00:51:41He did disqualify him?
00:51:42The fight is over.
00:51:43Another disqualification.
00:51:46And it's right.
00:51:47This guy didn't have to go down there.
00:51:49And you can't protect where he's hitting.
00:51:50He's hitting beside that cup.
00:51:52The cup is not protecting where he's throwing.
00:51:55I think this fight might knock out both fighters.
00:51:59Unbelievable.
00:52:00Gallardo whipped Riddick both this time hands down.
00:52:03Why do you have to go down?
00:52:04Why do you have to hit?
00:52:05He can't stop himself, George.
00:52:06No, he couldn't stop.
00:52:07That's not deliberate, George.
00:52:08It was deliberate, Larry.
00:52:09No, I don't believe that for a moment.
00:52:11I don't believe it for a moment.
00:52:12I just think it's...
00:52:13His corner told him, don't go to the body anymore.
00:52:15And he couldn't...
00:52:16So why do you go to the body unless you're deliberately trying to do something?
00:52:19Because he's hurt and he can't think.
00:52:21Fighting on instinct.
00:52:21And he's trying to punch.
00:52:22Yeah, but you're going to have to think about that when the referee's won you several times.
00:52:25And he's trying to punch.
00:52:26Very good, Eddie.
00:52:27Eddie.
00:52:28Eddie.
00:52:29Eddie.
00:52:29Eddie.
00:52:32Eddie.
00:52:32Eddie.
00:52:38Eddie.
00:52:41Eddie.
00:53:11Eddie.
00:53:13Errol Letterman in New York.
00:53:14Wayne Kelly elected to warn twice.
00:53:16took three points away and finally disqualified Gulotta on the sixth citation for low blows.
00:53:21What happened here?
00:53:22Jim, let me tell you something.
00:53:24Eddie Cotton disqualified Andrew Gulotta after he took away the third point.
00:53:29The same as Wayne Kelly did.
00:53:31And I told you it was going to happen after he took away the second point.
00:53:35Referees will go three points and you're out of there.
00:53:38And it's all there is to it.
00:53:39He took away a point in round two from Andrew Gulotta for a headbutt.
00:53:43He took a point away in round four for a low blow.
00:53:46He took a point away in round nine for a low blow.
00:53:49And Andrew Gulotta is out of there.
00:53:52Referees will not generally go beyond three points deducted.
00:53:56So the deducted point for the headbutt figures into the disqualification for low blows.
00:54:01Three points were deducted.
00:54:02All right, let's go to Michael Buffer.
00:54:04Calls a halt to the bout.
00:54:06It ends at 2.58 of round number nine.
00:54:10The winner by disqualification, Riddick Big Daddy Bo.
00:54:26Once again, the referee had to call a disqualification of this bout after repeated low blows.
00:54:332.58, round number nine.
00:54:37Can you believe everything is nice?
00:54:40No one is getting excited?
00:54:41Rod Newman even behaved himself.
00:54:45Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
00:54:46At this time, we do need to clear the aisle.
00:54:49Security please.
00:54:50And as doctors continue to look at Riddick Bowe in the ring,
00:54:54after the fearsome beating he took for nine rounds,
00:54:56let's take a look back at this incredible war.
00:55:09In round four, Bowe answered and put Gulotta on the canvas.
00:55:18And as Harold Letterman pointed out,
00:55:20there had already been penalty points assessed to Gulotta by this time.
00:55:24In round five, Gulotta put Bowe down again.
00:55:27With this vicious assault against the ropes.
00:55:30But then couldn't finish him.
00:55:32And then the action at the end of the fight,
00:55:35as a thoroughly beaten Bowe was chased around the ring by Gulotta.
00:55:38Gulotta unable to curb his tendency to throw low blows there.
00:55:43The disqualification by referee Eddie Cotton,
00:55:46working in his first match ever at this level of the sport.
00:55:50We bring you back now to real time and the aftermath of the fight.
00:55:54Let's take a look at a punch stat statistical profile of the bout,
00:55:58which shows that rarely has one big puncher so thoroughly dominated another.
00:56:02Gulotta throwing 162 more punches than Bowe,
00:56:06landing 192 more.
00:56:09You see the disparity in punch connect percentage.
00:56:12Jabs, same story.
00:56:13Gulotta landed 50 more jabs than Riddick Bowe,
00:56:16which helped him to dominate the action through most of the fight.
00:56:20In the ring, shortly after the stoppage,
00:56:23Larry Merchant had a chance to talk to the man who was once again so unusually,
00:56:27the winner, Riddick Bowe.
00:56:30Riddick, this is almost a replay of what happened five months ago.
00:56:35You seem exhausted and beaten.
00:56:37How did you hold up against that barrage?
00:56:39Well, I wouldn't say I was beaten.
00:56:41I was big-winded.
00:56:42But, like always, I always thought I could get Gulotta.
00:56:45I mean, you look at it like this in this aspect.
00:56:47Gulotta is somewhat, you know, fresh.
00:56:49He hasn't had as many fights, so therefore he don't get his time.
00:56:52But as soon as fatigue set in a little bit,
00:56:55that's when he started hitting me low.
00:56:58Were you aware from the previous deductions of points from Gulotta
00:57:03that if he did this one more time,
00:57:05that if you stayed out there long enough,
00:57:07something like this might happen?
00:57:09No, not at all.
00:57:10Actually, it never crossed my mind
00:57:12because I was under the impression that now he would fight a different fight.
00:57:16The appearance was that you were taking a terrible beating,
00:57:21or at least the worst beating we've seen you take before.
00:57:24What was it like in there for you?
00:57:26Well, to me, as always, I mean,
00:57:28a fight is a fight, and we're in the business, and we get hit.
00:57:32And I always had my faculty together,
00:57:34and I just thought that it was a matter of time before
00:57:36I'd rather to come back and, you know, pretty much hit him with something
00:57:39and got him in trouble.
00:57:41Do you think he was in trouble at the end and exhausted,
00:57:44and that's why he just didn't know what he was doing and is out of control?
00:57:47Well, I wouldn't say he didn't know what he was doing,
00:57:49but I figured he was a little tired.
00:57:52After the first fight, your mother said,
00:57:54if that's all you can do, you ought to stop fighting again.
00:57:57Well, actually, I think I did a little better this time.
00:58:00You think you did better this time?
00:58:01Right.
00:58:02And you want to keep on fighting?
00:58:05I mean, if I can get a tired shot, then sure,
00:58:07but if not, then I'm going to try to get into what happens,
00:58:10and if it don't work out according to plan,
00:58:13then I guess I'll give it up.
00:58:15Because I ain't no dummy,
00:58:16and I ain't going to allow these guys to keep hitting me.
00:58:17So you feel that this was such a tough fight
00:58:21that you have to start thinking about this,
00:58:24about going out of boxing soon?
00:58:27Yes, this is true, definitely.
00:58:29Thank you very much, Riddick.
00:58:31But I ain't finished yet, man.
00:58:32I ain't finished talking.
00:58:33What else do you want to talk about?
00:58:34No, I think Gulotta gave a good count of himself,
00:58:37and, you know, I'll be back,
00:58:39and I'm not finished yet.
00:58:40Don't count me out.
00:58:41We'll see what happens next time.
00:58:43Andrew Gulotta is said to speak four languages.
00:58:45He's a man of equally few words in all four.
00:58:49He left the ring without granting an interview to Larry Merchant,
00:58:52went to a hospital where he received ten stitches over his eye
00:58:56and eight stitches in his lip.
00:58:58Speculation that he might have had a broken jaw
00:59:00turned out to be false.
00:59:02In the absence of Gulotta,
00:59:03Larry Merchant talked to his trainer, Lou Duva.
00:59:06Lou Duva, give us your assessment of the fight.
00:59:12Well, Larry, you know, I don't know what to say.
00:59:17I really don't.
00:59:18I think it was all wrong.
00:59:20I think it was all wrong him throwing a body punch.
00:59:23Those are punches, the lobe punches that made him get disqualified.
00:59:29I can't, you know, I can't condone it,
00:59:31but I guess he relates to instinct and as a fighter, as a street fighter,
00:59:37and I don't know.
00:59:39I thought we did a number, Roger Bloodworth and I,
00:59:42teaching him for the past couple months down in Florida
00:59:45to put his punches up.
00:59:47The last four rounds, I kept telling him.
00:59:51Roger kept telling him.
00:59:53Ronnie Shields kept telling him.
00:59:54Pernod Whitaker, everybody's hollering over there.
00:59:56Go to the head, straight punches.
00:59:58All we wanted him to do was use that jab,
01:00:00snap the jab, and throw straight right hands.
01:00:02And we wanted to keep the fight in the center of the ring.
01:00:06We didn't want him in corners.
01:00:07We didn't want him on a rope.
01:00:08And I said, if you get him against the ropes,
01:00:13you walk out and walk to the center
01:00:14and let him follow you over to the center of the ring.
01:00:17That's all we could do.
01:00:18I do know that around the fourth or fifth round,
01:00:20I don't know which one of the guys I know in the heat of battle,
01:00:22but he complained about his jaw.
01:00:24And I said, come on, keep going.
01:00:27And Roger and I talked to him to keep going over there.
01:00:29But he did get a jaw.
01:00:31In fact, the two doctors examined him right now,
01:00:33and they checked it out,
01:00:35and they recommended he goes over to Atlantic City Hospital right now
01:00:38to get an x-rayed.
01:00:39They thought it might be fractured.
01:00:42Did you think he was going to knock out Riddick Bowe?
01:00:47Absolutely. Absolutely.
01:00:48I told you that, Larry, all week over here,
01:00:52I said he's going to stop him around anywhere between the eighth and tenth round.
01:00:56He's going to run him out of gas.
01:00:57And he says, and then he's going to knock him out.
01:00:59He's going to knock him out with right hands, straight right hands.
01:01:03He had the plan.
01:01:04He had everything there.
01:01:06He had...
01:01:07All right, but he had a cut eye.
01:01:09He had a badly cut lip.
01:01:10Absolutely.
01:01:11And he had what appears to be a broken jaw.
01:01:16So that he was in some pain.
01:01:18And do you think that that contributed to the fact that he was fouling?
01:01:22No, I don't think.
01:01:23I don't know.
01:01:24You know, it could be, you know, like I say, it gets in trouble.
01:01:29I don't know.
01:01:29I can't explain it.
01:01:30It's not me.
01:01:31It gets in trouble.
01:01:33And his instinct makes him fight like a street fighter,
01:01:36as if he's fighting in a bar, in a street, on a ballroom.
01:01:39I don't know.
01:01:39I mean, how do you handle it?
01:01:42We had a couple of situations down at camp, but we strained it out,
01:01:45and he wouldn't do it for maybe a week or two weeks.
01:01:48I can't explain it.
01:01:49So you're saying that even while you were trying to train him
01:01:52to throw the body punches correctly,
01:01:55he still lost it a couple of times in training.
01:01:58Yes, he did.
01:01:59He did, and we strained him out, and then he wouldn't do it for a couple of weeks.
01:02:02And then once in a while, he'd throw a punch, and it would stray low.
01:02:05It would stray low.
01:02:06So we had the sparring partners going up and down.
01:02:10We had them with their trunks up.
01:02:12We did everything to try and make it a battle as if he was battling a bow.
01:02:17And then he did do it a couple of times.
01:02:19And then Roger and I would get on him,
01:02:21and then he'd switch, and he wouldn't do it anymore.
01:02:23Then he'd go back to the jab, back to the jab.
01:02:27The appearance now is you may have the best heavyweight in the world.
01:02:34If we don't have a fight in a bar.
01:02:36But he has a serious flaw that's going to keep him from attaining that recognition,
01:02:42attaining a championship.
01:02:46Larry, I think you're right.
01:02:47I think that's the thing that we've got to address ourselves, too.
01:02:52I'm going to sit down during the week and talk to his managers, Bob O'Donnell and Danny McCollum,
01:02:57and sit down with Dino, who's his promoter, and find out where we're going
01:03:02and what's going to happen over here.
01:03:03And then finally sit down with Andrew and say,
01:03:05look, do you want to be a fighter or don't you want to be a fighter?
01:03:08If you don't want to be a fighter that fights in the ring and fights the right way,
01:03:14then you better go look for a championship of a tough man contest in a bar or something like that
01:03:18because it's not going to happen.
01:03:19And we're going to have to call it the way we see it.
01:03:22That's all we can do.
01:03:23I mean, it's uncalled for.
01:03:25It's uncalled for.
01:03:26I apologize.
01:03:27We all apologize.
01:03:28But what can we do about it?
01:03:30We were giving him the right instruction.
01:03:32We were telling him what it's right.
01:03:33But let me say one other thing.
01:03:35Bo was hurt quite a few times.
01:03:36I think even with the injury, you touched on the cuts.
01:03:39The cuts can be repaired.
01:03:41No problem with the cuts.
01:03:42With the eye, Joe Sousa did a good job.
01:03:44On the chin, Joe Sousa did a good job.
01:03:46But the punches that Bo took, that's going to be another story.
01:03:51That's going to be another story.
01:03:52Are you saying that this kind of fight may end the careers,
01:03:57the serious careers as championship contenders of both fighters?
01:04:02No, no, no.
01:04:03If he don't adhere to the rules, yes.
01:04:08The cuts don't mean nothing because the cuts can be repaired.
01:04:10But the punches that Bo took, that becomes another story.
01:04:15What do you mean?
01:04:16In other words, I think he's got to get checked out by a neurologist, you know.
01:04:19I think he's got to get a lot of examinations to see just what damage those punches have done to
01:04:24him
01:04:24because he caught a lot of punches.
01:04:26He caught.
01:04:26Look at the punch stats.
01:04:27I mean, look at the punch stats.
01:04:28This is the fourth time you've been in the opposite corner from Bo, twice with Evander Holyfield.
01:04:35He's had a lot of hard punches.
01:04:36Is he just getting too easy to hit and taking too many big punches?
01:04:41Is he too brave for his own good?
01:04:43That could be.
01:04:43And I'll tell you something.
01:04:45I'm one of the loudmouths that said that this guy couldn't take a good shot.
01:04:51And I've got to say one thing.
01:04:52I apologize.
01:04:53He can take a good shot.
01:04:55And he took a lot of shots.
01:04:56And he maybe took too many unnecessary punches tonight.
01:05:00And I don't know whether he's going to be right anymore.
01:05:03To Bo, really sincerely, I would hope that he gets checked out because he caught a lot of punches from
01:05:09Andrew.
01:05:10I know Andrew can bounce back once he makes up his mind if he's going to fight.
01:05:14But Bo is the guy that you have to check out because he took a lot of punches.
01:05:18Larry took a lot of punches to the head.
01:05:20And you saw him wobbling out there for the last six rounds.
01:05:23He was wobbling all over the place.
01:05:26What held him up?
01:05:27I don't know what held him up.
01:05:28And I know the ropes held him up quite a few times over there.
01:05:30But I don't know.
01:05:32If you had a fighter, Riddick Bo, and he was taking this much punishment, what would you do?
01:05:39There's not enough money in the world for me to put him back in the ring.
01:05:42I would tell him to retire.
01:05:43He's got all his marbles.
01:05:45He's got plenty of money.
01:05:47He's got a good wife.
01:05:48He's got a good family.
01:05:50What does he need it for?
01:05:51He don't know boxing or anything.
01:05:52He's been a credit to boxing.
01:05:54I would tell him to retire.
01:05:55Thank you very much, Lou.
01:05:59Certainly one of the most revealing interviews in our recent history.
01:06:02And let's take a look at a way history repeated itself in the fight.
01:06:07For the second time, Andrew Gulotta, on the judges' scorecards, was well on his way to victory when he was
01:06:14disqualified.
01:06:14Through eight rounds, the leader on all three official scorecards, and on at least one of the scorecards, he had
01:06:21already won the fight.
01:06:24But afterward, Larry Merchant spoke in the ring with the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission, Larry Hazard,
01:06:30and the referee who had stopped the fight, Eddie Cotton.
01:06:35Eddie, did you disqualify Gulotta because that was the third time you took a point from him?
01:06:43No, I disqualified him because that was the most blatant of the fouls that he committed.
01:06:48We went over all of the rules in the dressing room with both fighters.
01:06:53Each camp knew exactly what I was expecting, a good, clean fight.
01:06:57I took a point away from Andrew for a low blow earlier, and I also took a point away for
01:07:03a headbutt.
01:07:04There were a couple of other punches that were borderline, relatively close, that I probably could have taken another point.
01:07:09I wanted to give him an opportunity, but that was blatant, and I disqualified him.
01:07:14Did you ever get close to stopping the fight because of the battering Bo was taking?
01:07:20No. No.
01:07:22All right, Larry Hazard, quickly, from your point of view at ringside, do you think that everything was done according
01:07:29to the rules and properly?
01:07:30Not only were they done according to the rules and properly, I applaud the referee for the job that he
01:07:36did.
01:07:36Fortunately, I was a former referee, and I had the greatest confidence in this referee.
01:07:41We went into the dressing room.
01:07:43We went over the rules and regulations.
01:07:45He told them exactly what he expected, exactly what he would do, and he did that.
01:07:51I didn't see Galata complaining.
01:07:53I didn't see anyone in his corner complaining because they understood.
01:07:57I applaud what the referee did, and I stand behind his decision 100%.
01:08:02And I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone, including Andrew Galata.
01:08:07So Riddick Bowe still has only one loss on his record.
01:08:10That one applied in his second bout with Evander Holyfield.
01:08:13And Andrew Galata, though he's never really been bested in the ring, now has two losses on his record.
01:08:19George Foreman, put yourself in the shoes of any top heavyweight contender.
01:08:24You're Lennox Lewis, you're Michael Moorer, you're Mike Tyson, or Evander Holyfield.
01:08:28And your manager comes to you and says, we can make a lot of money fighting Andrew Galata.
01:08:32What do you say?
01:08:33I say no.
01:08:34Got no reason to get yourself involved in a fight like that.
01:08:37There can be some serious permanent damage caused by those punches below the belt.
01:08:42It's not going to enhance any guy's future to go and pick up that kind of money.
01:08:46Unless Galata turns his life around and show us that he intends not to hit anyone below the belt,
01:08:51I'd stay away from him if I'm a top fighter.
01:08:54What about Bowe's readiness to fight other top heavyweights?
01:08:57Riddick Bowe's got to go back to the drawing board and think to himself,
01:09:00does he need to be hit anymore?
01:09:02We're all going to get hit in the ring a lot anyway.
01:09:04But maybe he's already caught up at 29.
01:09:06He shouldn't take anymore.
01:09:08George, once again, it was a pleasure to call this fight with you.
01:09:10Thanks very much.
01:09:11Let's turn our attention to Larry Merchant.
01:09:14And, Larry, you heard what George had to say about both Bowe and Galata.
01:09:16Where do you think these two fighters go from here?
01:09:19Andrew Galata is like a fatally flawed great talent,
01:09:23an artist who paints beautiful canvases or makes great sculpture
01:09:29and somehow at the end ruins it.
01:09:34I don't know if that can be fixed.
01:09:36Short of sending him to a shrink or to the Polish Pope,
01:09:40I can't think of a thing that can turn him around.
01:09:44As far as Riddick Bowe is concerned,
01:09:47if he felt he was damaged by what happened in the ring outside of the fouls in the first fight,
01:09:53he was even more seriously damaged in terms of his stature as a heavyweight in this fight.
01:10:00But he has to think long and hard about whether he wants to come back to prize fighting and fight
01:10:08on the very top level.
01:10:09He has never shown that much interest in trying to be a great man in the ring.
01:10:17He loves his family. We all know about it.
01:10:19That's his flaw.
01:10:23Maybe it will turn out to be a living flaw,
01:10:27a flaw that enables him to walk off into the sunset.
01:10:31All right.
01:10:32Well, one thing we know for sure now, Larry,
01:10:34if in fact you're the kind of person who likes to go to all the Halloween movies,
01:10:37if you prowl the shopping malls looking for the latest horror offerings,
01:10:41if you have a little bit of a penchant for the bizarre and you happen to hear
01:10:46that there is going to be a Bo Galata 3,
01:10:49pay any price to see it.
01:10:52Thanks very much for being with us.
01:10:58Ladies and gentlemen,
01:11:00introducing
01:11:02Andrew
01:11:07Galata.
01:11:24He has a vicious left jab that landed flush for Galata.
01:11:31Hard power punches from Galata.
01:11:34Bo goes down.
01:11:36Second time in his career that Bo's been down and he's wobbling badly.
01:11:40This was a good left-right combo by Galata.
01:11:43Plenty of time left in the round.
01:11:45And Galata looks as calm as an assassin.
01:11:49Now a right hand for Bo as he finds himself a little bit.
01:11:52But Galata wobbles him again.
01:11:54Galata to the body.
01:11:58Bo finally holds on.
01:12:00Galata's landed a lot of leather here.
01:12:02If Riddick Bo makes it out of the round,
01:12:04it'll be an act of Herculean courage.
01:12:09Hard left hand by Galata.
01:12:12Goal lands a right.
01:12:13They fire away at each other.
01:12:17Unbelievable.
