Cookamidgera producer Richard Rice says early weaning produced quieter, market-ready calves during the tough season.

00:00Basically with weaning we're always seeing it making sure that we've got the facilities are good, ready set up.
00:06So whether we've got good clean water, we've got the livestock are used to the feed that they're going to
00:12get once they're weaned,
00:13hence being hay or silage or chopped hay, and just make sure that they're happy and satisfied that they can
00:19consume enough feed to be able to ruminate properly.
00:25Yard weaning really helps us to be able to settle the cattle, as you can see these heifers here have
00:29only been weaned a month ago,
00:32but they've only just come out of a yard weaning situation because of the drought they're currently in, and so
00:37they've been hand fed.
00:38It creates quiet cattle, they're used to human contact, and that makes it a lot easier for us to handle,
00:45but also a lot easier for us to moving stock, and also that they're a happy animal to breed from,
00:51and also to look after.
00:55Thank you very much.
