In the Gulf States, migrant workers are facing growing risks as the conflict with Iran intensifies. The majority of civilians killed there have been south Asian nationals. Millions of south Asians rely on jobs in the region to support their families.

00:01The reason I'm here in Gorkai in central Nepal is to meet a family that's now grieving the
00:06loss of their son after an Iranian strike near Abu Dhabi airport almost two weeks ago.
00:12A 29-year-old Debar Shrestha was working there as a security guard hoping to build a better
00:17life for his family.
00:18The UAE says it intercepted the missile strike but debris from the interception fell and
00:24killed him.
00:26There may be a war between countries but an innocent person has lost his life.
00:31Debar is far from the only migrant worker caught up in this conflict.
00:35Since the US-Israeli assault on Iran began, the Iran has launched hundreds of missiles
00:40and drones towards the Gulf countries.
00:43They say those strikes are aimed at American military bases and strategic targets but many
00:47of them have hit civilian infrastructure.
00:49At least a dozen civilians have been killed so far and almost all of them are foreign nationals.
00:54South Asians are particularly vulnerable.
00:57Workers from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India make up a huge share of the labour force
01:02across the Gulf, doing everything from construction and security work to cleaning and delivery jobs.
01:07Workers have died from every one of those countries since this war began and many are still stranded.
01:13For families here in Nepal, their reality is stark.
01:17Jobs are scarce here so millions head abroad to support their families,
01:21families, even if it means facing risks that can turn deadly.
