00:23We're at SF State University at this beautiful spot at Hensel Hall. Danny's
00:28got a cool line lined up. We've got some pallets out for a bit of testing and yeah we haven't
00:34got much time today so it's a little bit tight. Pretty scary looking. I did see it once before
00:42but it's funny how you forget how gnarly certain things are.
00:47Rather him than me. Guys, you can use this footage to anyone who calls you a diva. Wow.
00:57That's why I hand it over and you can finish up. This has been one of the ones I've been
01:00dreading
01:01the most. But having wet, sturdy tires isn't helping.
01:08How do I feed yourself? Hope you're having a good time out of San Francisco.
01:13Been here once before practicing. Hopefully this helps kind of what we've built behind it here.
01:29It's a recommended technique. Does this mean you just bang it out first try then?
01:33Well not really. We've still got some pallets at the wall here.
01:43It's not exactly what I had in mind to be honest. All hands on deck for pallets.
01:55Having a lot of listening to the tune this morning and it's getting a feel for some timing.
02:03It's the rhythm and just it's such a tune. Danny's always got a kind of good idea of the
02:10song that he wants to use before the project starts. So you can shoot the film to the song.
02:17And actually that's what was cool about Danny. I didn't know how involved he was with finding
02:22music and he's constantly listening to new stuff. I always see him kind of like
02:26trying to tee up the song he wants for this you know in his head and in his moves and
02:33the cadence and the beats.
02:35I think if he ever does decide he doesn't want to do biking anymore he can be a music supervisor
02:39and just
02:40talk to labels, sort songs. It's quite subconscious for folks but when you when you get the right
02:48tune, the right location and writing and edits it well then it just really takes it to a different level.
03:19I think I'm happy enough for that. I don't think I could think not but I don't know if it's
03:24good.
03:34Well done.
03:35Well done.
03:37Nice.
03:38Very nice.
03:39I like that.
03:40I like that.
03:44I like that.
03:50I like that.
04:01That's an easy one.
04:07No, no, no.
04:10I like that.
04:10Would you like that?
04:14That, like, method is, it isn't, you've got a lot of wheels to aim for it and a fairly
04:20big wall.
04:22Maybe, what about getting your bike up and just marking your, at the end of, like, a
04:27line, it's pretty nice to have a, I think you want to do it right here, that'll be it'll
04:32go.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Just making sure I don't go to you.
04:37I'd describe Duncan in a similar way to Danny, to be honest.
04:39One of those people that'll do anything for you, he'll go out his way to help you.
04:44Just all round, one of my best friends, you know, really supportive, because he's a really
04:50good trials rider himself, he can kind of look at the stuff through the sort of trials
04:57lens.
04:58Just getting some friendly encouragement.
05:03Literally pulling it like this is the step to getting it.
05:06Yeah, you're right.
05:08Duncan's always there to guide him a little bit, suggest if it is realistic and if it's
05:13working.
05:14Being able to give Danny that confidence, from a peers point of view, that it is possible,
05:20is really crucial.
05:40Oh, yeah.
05:42Good anchor.
05:43Happy?
05:44Yeah, yeah.
05:45I'm stoked.
05:46What are you doing?
05:46Fair play, that's actually quite a committing line, don't you?
05:49Backwards, I think.
05:51How does it feel banging that one out, Danny?
05:53It's been a good day.
05:54Three tricks.
05:55It kind of blinds all of which took a fair bit of a...
05:58It's a good Sunday.
05:59And I've only had breakfast today.
06:01Yeah.
06:01Fueled on Red Bull today.
06:02I won't feed you next time.
06:04Woo!
06:05I mean, the riding's good, but Robbie, that's...
06:09Pretty good shot, Robbie.
06:11I'd say SF State was a good day.
06:14Danny, up until that point, had kind of been struggling mentally with a lot of lines and
06:17was feeling quite low.
06:18But yeah, on that day we managed to get three tricks and spirits were high.
06:24That's it.
06:25That's it.
06:25Oh, yeah, that's good.
06:27I like that.
06:28Beautiful.
06:29Nice work.
06:29Nice, nice.
06:30Oh, yeah, hell yeah.
06:31It's all right, Danny.
06:32We can go to Chipotle now.
06:34Oh, thank goodness.
06:39Alcatraz is the golden jewels of this project.
06:42It's...
06:42It is the...
06:43It's the spot.
06:45If you think of San Fran, Alcatraz comes with it.
06:48It's probably one of the most famous little islands in the world, really.
06:51For me, the main place I've seen Alcatraz over the years is definitely in movies.
06:57There's not many places in the world that give you that sort of feeling of history.
07:02In the Civil War it was a prison and then they stored their gold there and then it became
07:07a penitentiary.
07:09Native Americans took it over for like a year and a half, which was pretty wild.
07:14So it's got a really deep history in the U.S.
07:17And it's also got quite a serious past, you know.
07:21And when you're actually in the walls and you're, you know, in the wreck yard, you can,
07:26I don't know, almost put yourself in some of the inmates' shoes.
07:30Got some interesting vibes floating around that place.
07:33I'm in the slammer.
07:34I'm sure it wasn't very nice being here, but at least got a nice view.
07:38You know, we had to definitely pull a few strings to get it to happen, but we've been very lucky
07:43to get to film out there, which is really cool.
07:46Hopefully it's not as windy as this look.
07:52I'm not that stoked about the early starts for Alcatraz.
07:55You have to get up at like 4 a.m.
07:59Good morning.
08:02Awesome.
08:03It's fresh at 4.30 a.m.
08:05Just heading to Alcatraz.
08:07Zip up, kind of, you know, sort of almost 30 cities.
08:12I feel like I'm in a movie set here.
08:14Look at that.
08:15Danny, you've hit the big time, we've got a yacht.
08:21No way, look at that thing.
08:26It's only been like five years in the planning, so...
08:30Finally getting to go to Alcatraz.
08:33Pretty calm this morning.
08:36We're lucky with the weather.
08:39But it stays like this all day.
08:43Gentlemen...
08:44Welcome to...
08:45The Rock.
08:51Holy shit.
08:55Just arrived at Alcatraz now.
08:58Got a lovely old cart and wheeling up to his first spot.
09:01Seeger was complaining about the champagne on the yacht that we took over.
09:05You know, I'm just of the mind that any champagne is good if it's free.
09:14Grand plans, and then you get here at fucking 5.30 a.m. or whatever it is.
09:19Those plans seem a little bit more ambitious.
09:22The rails are really tight to do any kind of rotation.
09:24I was thinking a 360 made a little bit optimistic.
09:33Just crazy, the rails kind of in the way.
09:35Sun's coming out, the drone's in the air.
09:38Ready to do this.
09:39First time a bike's ever been shot on here.
09:41It's pretty cool.
09:42So, trying the really complex thing of trying to manage the drone position
09:49whilst they have to fly off the boat down there.
09:51And Danny's also up here.
09:54Can I reach that please?
09:56And quite complex, sort of getting everyone in time with each other.
10:13How about that?
10:17Oh my God!
10:19Oh my God!
10:44We are just filming a bit of a tighter shot now, from the Movi shot, it kind of all looks,
10:49it makes it look too smooth and easy, but if you get off there you see how narrow the ledges
10:54when Danny's spinning off it.
11:02He's doing some snaps, so I suppose they're setting up some shots in the safe.
11:21Successful morning, got the lines, still in one piece and ready for breakfast actually.
11:36We're on our way back out to Alcatraz in the evening, it's called the dead boat I think or something
11:40like that.
11:41Nobody else is on it apart from us?
11:44The weather is taking a bit of a turn.
11:52We made it to the right yard, but it's a little bit damp.
11:56We've got an hour to go before the place closes and we can start riding.
12:02Hopefully it dries out a little bit.
12:04The main problem is how narrow it is.
12:05You don't like 360ing of narrow things, it's not very nice.
12:09And especially when I'm carving to my right, you've got a pedal catcher right in the edge of it.
12:16What is quite a big 360.
12:28Okay.
12:39Just setting off the crane shot, ready for the first shot in the wreck yard.
12:56How are we doing for a light?
12:58It's done.
13:00Yeah?
13:10I would say I'm pretty calculated when it comes to the kind of risks I'm taking with my writing.
13:16You know, with age comes knowledge, you know, and you learn about your body and how you work.
13:22You wouldn't be able to have the amount of success Danny McCaskill has had without a high degree of calculation.
13:29The reality is it has to be calculated because otherwise people wouldn't last for as long as they do.
13:36I need time, I just need time to process it, you know, because I've got that fear.
13:40I think we shot till half seven, eight o'clock.
13:45The light was fading and Danny was just not having a good time.
13:48The annoying one is just that bottom step.
13:50If it was just that height, I wouldn't think twice about putting off it, it'd be like nothing.
13:55It's kind of one that I would like, if it was in the street, I would just sort of sesh.
13:58I would sesh that bottom one and get really, you know, you'd get really comfy.
14:02But that next one up, I feel very much like I'm going to f*** up.
14:08I have like a lot of trust in him knowing that he's not going to attempt something that, you know,
14:12he's not a reckless person.
14:13One of the hard things for doing a 360 in that spot is you're riding alongside a step and your
14:20inside pedal is very close to that step.
14:23And when you go to carve, there's not much room to actually carve for the 360.
14:28So as you're carving, you could clip the pedal.
14:30And I think the mixture of that and also the wind, it just didn't, it just didn't make sense really
14:37for Danny to try it.
14:54Probably one of the more disappointing days I've finished with, I'd say, in my entire riding career.
14:59Just in terms of location, could have just done it there, didn't do it.
15:05Normally when the push comes to shove, I get it done.
15:07After leaving Alcatraz, there definitely was a few low days.
15:11Everyone was pretty, pretty depressed.
15:13And I think Danny even stayed in his room for a whole day, recovering from it.
15:22Next time on Back of the Postcard.
15:24Confident, Daniel? No, I'm not.
15:26This one's pretty scary.
15:28Don't even know what this is, a donut banquet?
15:29It's pretty much like doing a diving head first, front flip to concrete.
15:34Take into consideration the tide.
15:36I'd say it's like so on my limit.
15:40Pow!
15:41.
15:41.
15:41.
15:42.
15:42.
15:42.
15:42.
15:42You
