00:07Danny McCaskill is on a journey to create the biggest and most ambitious project of his career,
00:13a unique new film that will see him progress his riding to an even higher level.
00:17I've got such a free range that I can build the setups, you know, that will allow me to do
00:21the tricks
00:22that have just been in my dreams up until now.
00:24However, a career-threatening injury resulted in major back surgery,
00:28and just six weeks after the operation, he's committed to shooting a dangerous new TV project.
00:33I'm 100% happy about doing it. The only thing I'm worried about is my back.
00:44Just after my operation, I was asked to do this documentary for Channel 4, Life on the Edge,
00:49looking into athletes' mindsets and how they deal with fear,
00:53and if they've got anything different going on in their brain.
00:58compared with people that don't do extreme sports.
01:03On this project, I actually wasn't going to be riding a bike,
01:06you know, which was obviously a big plus, because I was in a back brace at the time.
01:12Meet one of my heroes today, who's pretty amazing, Guy Martin.
01:16And, yeah, there's nothing more really needs to be said than that.
01:22Some of my favourite videos to watch on YouTube are some of his, like, POV or on-bike camera footage
01:28from the Isle of Man TT. It's got to be one of the craziest races in the world.
01:34Tell me what you know about Danny.
01:36Man's a legend, isn't he? Man's a legend.
01:38How do you think what Danny does compares to what you do?
01:42Danny does with day and night.
01:43Day and night.
01:44Like, my job, it just looks a lot more spectacular than actually what it is.
01:48When you're sat doing it, it's not that much, really.
01:51It's all calculated. It's a calculated thing that we're doing.
01:53But it's not rocket science.
01:55But what Danny is doing is rocket science.
01:58For me, because it's inch precision, not even inches, but, you know, when he's doing that,
02:03the tram line, they're riding down the train track, like, whip it 360 in and then back on.
02:08You what? You what?
02:10Nah.
02:16Well done.
02:17All right, how's it going?
02:18All right, mate, you?
02:19Yeah, good.
02:20It's going to be really cool today. I can't wait.
02:23If it had been something else for TV, then I might have been more inclined to just kind of turn
02:26it down
02:27but the fact that I was going to get to meet some of my heroes
02:30and kind of maybe sort of have a little taste of some of the sports I've always wanted to do,
02:34it was awesome.
02:40The documentary scene Danny is shooting today
02:42looks at the effect adrenaline has on Guy during high-speed motorcycle racing.
02:55So what's the top speed of the bike?
02:56Top speed, we'll probably get about 190 out of this.
03:00Oh, really?
03:00Yeah.
03:04Despite his recent surgery, Danny is determined to seize the opportunity
03:08to experience the thrill of the ride for himself.
03:11I'm 100% happy about doing it.
03:14I'm just...
03:15The only thing I'm worried about is my back.
03:17That's my only concern in the world.
03:20If everything feels right
03:21and I'm getting plenty of feeling from the bike
03:23and Danny's comfortable,
03:25there's no reason why we can't crack on on it.
03:28Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
03:31You all right, Danny?
03:32Yeah.
03:51Hanging about.
03:52I don't know.
03:53He's not hanging about.
03:53It was funny because he said,
03:55oh, well, just take it easy on the first lap.
03:57I think the first lap, you know,
03:58it didn't feel like we were taking it that easy,
04:00but I don't know.
04:02I just kind of felt comfortable,
04:03but at the same time,
04:04kind of just so intense and wild.
04:07It was more just like being on a really amazing roller coaster
04:11that could crash.
04:18The guy who comes to do a job,
04:20he just gets on with it,
04:21and especially, you know,
04:22he got Danny McCasley on back here,
04:25because he knows how famous he is.
04:26He's injured as well,
04:27and the risks of what could happen today
04:30are all there, you know,
04:31fair play to them both.
04:32Fair play to Danny for going out and back them as well,
04:34because I won.
04:40That was awesome.
04:42Thanks.
04:44The thing is, like,
04:45we must have been doing, what,
04:47140 or down the back,
04:48but the thing was still wheeling,
04:49just because of the way,
04:50and it was wheeling,
04:51and the wind was taking it,
04:52and it was doing that,
04:54because of the wind.
04:54What an awesome experience.
04:56Like, it was so intense,
04:58like, so much power.
05:02The back's held up.
05:03It's just been good.
05:04I mean,
05:06I don't think there was anything
05:07stopping me from getting on the back of that bike,
05:08so it was just amazing.
05:11I need to get myself one of these beasts.
05:14Give up this trails market,
05:16it's for wimps.
05:17I met Danny McCaskill.
05:18I've been on the back of my bike.
05:20That's all right.
05:23Shit, huh?
05:24With the documentary in the can,
05:26Danny's recovery now takes priority.
05:29High-performance manager Darren Roberts
05:31welcomes Danny back with open arms.
05:33It's his job to assess Danny's physical state
05:36and begin a programme of rehabilitation.
05:39Danny's situation at the moment is,
05:41he's had his operation,
05:42which was a success.
05:44Danny's injury was,
05:45it was complicated,
05:47it was difficult to diagnose,
05:48it required some, you know,
05:50world-class specialists to get involved
05:52to try and get to the bottom of what was wrong
05:53and what needed to happen.
05:55On top of that,
05:56you know,
05:56you've got Danny.
05:59I'm going to do a cog sport test today,
06:02which is a baseline measure
06:05of their cognitive function.
06:06Oh, I'm really into going.
06:08I just can't wait.
06:09So just follow the instructions.
06:13Let's get into this,
06:14can you check it?
06:15What?
06:16All right.
06:18Sorry.
06:18So what, so what,
06:19I don't quite understand this,
06:20so what, you,
06:21if, no,
06:22so press yes
06:23when the current turns face up,
06:25so that's it?
06:26Yeah.
06:27Okay.
06:28And what's, what's, what's...
06:30God definitely got the dry sense of humour
06:31of any human being I know.
06:34Good fun.
06:35You know when you're hanging out with them,
06:36you never,
06:37there's never a dull moment,
06:39that's for sure.
06:41Is the card right?
06:42Yes or no?
06:42Is it, yeah?
06:44Okay.
06:44And then just do K or D, yeah?
06:47Yeah.
06:51How come that was wrong?
06:56It's really difficult to get him to commit
06:58to something like a treatment plan
07:00because it's not what athletes want to do.
07:03We're just coming to the Sales Sharks Rugby Club
07:07to come and get tuned up in the physio.
07:09The specific physiotherapy treatment
07:11that Danny's been getting
07:12is soft tissue work
07:14to keep all his connective tissues healthy, mobile.
07:17Danny has got a lot of what we would call,
07:19you know,
07:20inbuilt compensations where,
07:23from,
07:23just from riding the bike,
07:24and the physiotherapy process
07:25kind of straightens them out,
07:28puts them all back into line,
07:29makes sure each muscle
07:30is doing the job
07:31that it's supposed to,
07:32gives him a bit of an MOT,
07:34a bit of a once-over,
07:35as well as reinforcing to Danny,
07:37you still need to do
07:38the prehabilitation
07:40and all the boring stuff.
07:43I'm almost able to touch my toes
07:44with straight legs.
07:46It totally brings all my back pain
07:47when I do it with my left leg.
07:49And do you find that it gets worse
07:50when you ride a lot?
07:51Yeah, if my back gets tired,
07:54I'm holding it back.
07:57You can't hold it back.
08:00It's been such an amazing thing
08:02having, you know,
08:03the performance programme to back me,
08:05and it's a nice feeling
08:07that somebody's really sort of got my back
08:09when it comes to
08:11kind of managing my recovery.
08:14Danny's not the only athlete
08:16entering rehabilitation.
08:17Both he and enduro rider Johnny Walker
08:20are set for an extensive gym workout.
08:23Oh, I can't wait.
08:25As long as I don't have to go
08:26on a bloody rowing machine.
08:28I hate those flipping things.
08:35And of all the gym equipment,
08:37the rower is definitely the worst.
08:49It's some kind of,
08:50looks like an atom cluster
08:53or some sort.
08:54It's just a random agility warm-up,
08:57so, you know,
08:58bouncing a knobbly ball around,
08:59it's a good laugh as well,
09:00and it warms up depth perception
09:02and peripheral vision
09:03and a whole bunch of other things
09:05rather than just doing it statically.
09:09Good.
09:10Can you see anything at the minute?
09:12Not really.
09:12No, I can just see.
09:13So they're not sunglasses,
09:15you can't actually very see through them.
09:17Right, so come here.
09:21A bit tight, like,
09:22an old beak.
09:23Oh, here we go.
09:25Let's just slow that down.
09:26Yeah, there we go.
09:26Let me just slow it down a little bit.
09:29That is actually horrible.
09:30Your eyes are like that.
09:38So the slower the flashing,
09:41you know,
09:41the longer you can't see what's going on,
09:43so the more your brain
09:44has to anticipate what's happening.
09:45I can do this.
09:51I'm hoping, you know,
09:52like, it will get fully better.
09:54Right now it's hard to see
09:56sort of past,
09:57you know,
09:58I only look like
09:59the next two weeks ahead of myself,
10:00you know.
10:01It kind of feels like
10:02I'm running less forever,
10:03but hopefully not.
10:04As obvious as this sounds,
10:05I need him to,
10:06I need him to ride.
10:07You know,
10:08there's only so much
10:08you can do in a gym,
10:09there's only so much
10:10jumping up and down
10:11on boxes you can do,
10:12and at some point
10:12he needs to get on a bike and ride.
10:14Before Danny will finally
10:15be able to get back
10:16on his trials bike,
10:17the next step in his recovery
10:19should be far more enjoyable
10:20than a rowing machine.
10:29We're up at the Stank,
10:31near Callender in Scotland.
10:33It's kind of nice to be
10:34getting out and about
10:35on the bike
10:35after the last few months off.
10:38Yeah,
10:39getting a bit of freedom again.
10:57I mean,
10:57I'm still
10:58feeling a fair bit of pain
10:59in my back.
11:01It's been pretty tough.
11:03I've been doing a lot
11:03of sleeping on ice packs.
11:10Day by day,
11:11I can maybe feel
11:12a little bit of difference,
11:13and then some days,
11:14you know,
11:14I have my bad days.
11:17You know,
11:17I've really been on,
11:18trying to get on the sort of
11:19fast track to 100% health.
11:22Unfortunately,
11:23with this kind of injury,
11:24there's not really
11:24a fast track,
11:25I don't think.
11:26So it's just
11:26trying to be patient
11:28and, yeah,
11:30just trying to stay positive.
11:36With his recovery
11:37slowly underway,
11:39the new riding film
11:40now needs to progress.
11:41Danny's in London
11:42to look at possible locations
11:44and meet the team
11:45who will help develop
11:46the project.
11:48First meeting
11:48in the Red Bull
11:50headquarters for a little while.
11:53It's been a pretty exciting day.
11:56There's always been tricks
11:57that I've always wanted to learn,
11:58but you've never found
11:59the right stuff in the street.
12:01So you've got all these,
12:01like I've got all these things
12:02in my head,
12:02I think,
12:03wow, this would be brilliant to do,
12:04this would be brilliant to do.
12:05But then you can never
12:06find the right place.
12:07So I thought if we
12:09kind of come up with an idea
12:11that's got sort of no limitations.
12:14For the new film,
12:16Danny is planning to find
12:17the perfect indoor space.
12:18For the first time,
12:20he plans to build
12:21the lines of his dreams.
12:22Finding the right location
12:24will be a challenge.
12:25Here's a space to go
12:26and do a project.
12:27Look at it.
12:30Huge.
12:31So I did it.
12:32It's kind of going to be
12:33funny,
12:33but sort of
12:35almost unbelievable.
12:36Pretty cool
12:37with the two levels here.
12:39This could potentially
12:40be made into a level two.
12:44Is it okay
12:44to have a little look upstairs?
12:46Everything that we put in there,
12:47it's all going to be
12:47very, like,
12:48put there on purpose.
12:52Pretty cool space.
12:54So we've maybe
12:55done a really hard part
12:56and then
12:57like another shot
12:58maybe picks me up.
13:01This is the same location
13:02but warehouse number two.
13:06It will be a lot of,
13:07like,
13:07solid kind of stuff
13:08that I would do
13:09in inspired video
13:10or something
13:10kind of stuff as well.
13:12So you basically
13:12ride along
13:14and you do a thing
13:15called the hippie hop
13:15where you jump off the bike.
13:16It's such an incredible thing
13:18to kind of get
13:20opportunity to do this
13:21this project.
13:22We're going to spend
13:23the next
13:24so many months here
13:25and I want it to
13:25be the right thing
13:26for the job.
13:27We'll just have to
13:28have to see.
13:30My tiger
13:30and my elephant
13:31and my fox.
13:31They'll be in there somewhere.
13:32What's the elephant?
13:34Just in case.
13:35It was a circus.
13:38Just in case.
13:39Yeah, just to have it
13:40kind of right
13:40in the background.
13:45That's why
13:46when you're in these
13:46kind of places
13:47it makes you feel
13:47pretty small
13:49or it makes the project
13:50seem really big.
13:51I don't know which one.
13:53So, yeah.
13:57Next time
13:58Danny gets a
13:59once in a lifetime
14:00opportunity.
14:01I felt like
14:02a bit of a rabbit
14:02in headlights.
14:05He begins to
14:06turn his dreams
14:06for the new film
14:07into a reality.
14:09Imagine getting
14:09like say
14:10even 40%
14:11of this
14:11into an edit.
14:13I think it's going
14:14to be pretty
14:15it should be
14:16something quite
14:16different.
14:17And has he found
14:18the perfect filming
14:19location
14:19in an unexpected
14:20place?
14:21I think we can do
14:22something pretty
14:22amazing here.
14:24What an opportunity.
14:25I think we can do
