00:00With its mountainous beauty and lush landscape.
00:03The Canadian countryside is as beautiful as it is breathtaking.
00:09Many Canadians are discovering rural life and they're making the move.
00:14We are helping them find their perfect country house.
00:19I love how lush it is, like there's definitely a lot of greenery, kind of magical.
00:24It's amazing, I feel like I'm in Barbie's dream house.
00:39Jonathan is on a mission to find the perfect country home for him and his family.
00:44Accompanying him on the hunt is Bronwyn, a good friend of his wife and a seasoned house
00:48flipper, thanks to her parents' expertise.
00:50With two kids and two dogs to consider, they're seeking a private, quiet retreat with plenty
00:56of acreage and a whole lot of character.
00:58You don't want the dogs in the pool?
00:59Yeah.
00:59There's a whole pond back there that can go for a swim.
01:01Yeah.
01:02So...
01:04I can't wait to show them these three unique homes, each with their own charm and potential.
01:10This was originally built in 1910.
01:13I like to look this good when I'm about 120.
01:15I think so too, yeah.
01:19Welcome to the show.
01:20We're here in breathtaking Deep Cove, where we're going to help Bronwyn and John find John's
01:26perfect forever home.
01:27I've assembled three pretty unique properties that I think they're going to like.
01:31Let's see which one takes the cake.
01:39Now let's meet today's hunters, Jonathan and his wife's good friend, Bronwyn.
01:43My wife has to work currently, so she trusted Bronwyn to come along and help the search, because
01:48I'm not allowed to search by myself.
01:50Need a woman's touch.
01:55Bronwyn's friendship with the family wasn't the only reason she was chosen for the hunt.
01:59My parents are house flippers and they've been actually flipping houses since I was about
02:04six years old and are still doing it, so I do have an eye for it.
02:08My dad was a carpenter, my mom's an interior designer, so I have a good eye for all that kind
02:14of stuff.
02:16Jonathan and his family are after a new home that will offer a complete change of lifestyle
02:20from what they're currently accustomed to.
02:23You've just got to feel like your country, not in the city, you know.
02:25It's just a quieter setting, something that sticks out a little bit, not your typical cookie-cutter home.
02:30And with children, I just want something for them to have a yard and an acreage to grow up in
02:34and actually be outside and enjoy it.
02:35Renovations are something I can do myself, I've got a little bit of handy in me.
02:42So we're kind of a little bit widespread.
02:44Our budget was $2.4 to $4 million.
02:46I'm always open to surprises.
02:55Nestled on the stunning Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island,
02:58Deep Cove is a hidden gem that beckons visitors with its tranquil beauty and charm.
03:02This picturesque village, cradled by lush mountains and sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean,
03:07offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
03:11Deep Cove provides a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and small town warmth.
03:16The area's spacious properties offer the privacy and character they desire,
03:20with ample acreage for the kids to explore and play,
03:22and you'll see why it's the perfect place for today's family to call home.
03:32The first home on the hunt is this secluded fixer-upper.
03:36Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, this property offers an abundance of potential.
03:43Hi guys.
03:44Hi, Bronwyn.
03:46Jeff, nice to meet you.
03:46Jonathan, nice to meet you.
03:47Pleasure to meet you, Jonathan.
03:48Welcome.
03:49So, we're on the house hunt today.
03:51We've put together three pretty unique homes for you,
03:54but why don't we start by going over what the main criteria is that you need in a new home?
03:59Well, to start, we're looking for an acreage, something with a bit of character.
04:02We have two dogs, two young children, so we definitely want something outside that they can enjoy the outdoors.
04:07Yeah, that's a handful, so we need a lot of room for that.
04:10Absolutely.
04:10And I do hear that you have a bit of an eye for this.
04:13Yes, my parents are house flippers, so I've been growing up with all of this.
04:18What are the main criteria you need for the new home?
04:21At least four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a yard for the children is the biggest component for everything.
04:27All four children, two girls, two dogs?
04:28Yes.
04:29Okay.
04:30Lots of room to run around, just making sure.
04:32What are we ranging in for budget here?
04:34We generally discuss about 2.4 to 4 is kind of what we're ranging in our budget.
04:41So we are here at house number one.
04:43It's a very secluded, sort of country-style home.
04:46First impressions?
04:47I like it.
04:48Awesome.
04:48It's really neat.
04:49It's got a lot of character.
04:50I love the vegetation.
04:51It's nicely set back from the road, which is nice.
04:53It gives you that privacy feeling.
04:54All right.
04:55Ready to take a look at house number one?
04:56Let's do it.
04:57Let's go.
05:06Wow.
05:09Look at this.
05:11Now this is the epitome of country home, is it not?
05:13Yeah.
05:14This was originally built in 1910.
05:17Oh wow.
05:17So the whole bottom floor is all still original.
05:20I mean the architecture is just phenomenal.
05:22Upstairs was an add-on I believe around the 90s.
05:25So this made it almost a century and people seem to be quite happy with it.
05:29What are your first impressions?
05:31Just beautiful.
05:32I mean you don't find woodwork like this anymore.
05:34Oh I know.
05:35The detail is phenomenal.
05:36Now obviously a lot of this is still original.
05:39I mean for example the fireplace.
05:40I mean on a day like today I wouldn't mind.
05:42Yeah I would say no to a fire on a day like today.
05:43Absolutely.
05:44It's a little chilly out there.
05:46Yeah.
05:49We never actually discussed wood burning but I might become a fan after looking at that
05:53fireplace.
05:53I feel like now it's a necessity.
05:57Now anything else that's catching your eye in the first entryway?
06:00The coffered ceilings.
06:01I love the coffered ceilings.
06:02You don't see that anymore.
06:03And it's still in fantastic shape.
06:04Absolutely.
06:05I like to look this good when I'm about 120.
06:07I think so too yeah.
06:11Alright well lots to explore.
06:13Why don't you two take a look around the house.
06:14Check out the kitchen and the upstairs and I'll meet you outside in about 510.
06:18Great.
06:18Perfect.
06:30Wow I actually like this.
06:32I think my wife would find this pretty nice.
06:35Yeah and the kids?
06:36The kids would love it.
06:37I love this middle island.
06:38Really country setting.
06:40The floor?
06:41Not a fan.
06:42I don't think my wife would be a fan of the floor.
06:43No.
06:44I really like the cabinetry in there actually.
06:46And the yellow walls.
06:47I mean it's just paint.
06:48But I thought it was quite lovely.
06:49It really gave you a nice country feel in there.
06:51Yeah.
06:51It just felt like a nice room that would separate and create some intimate moments with the
06:54kids.
06:57Yeah.
06:58I just have to learn to cook.
07:00Yeah.
07:05I could definitely see you guys living here.
07:08I think so.
07:08I think just having morning coffee with the kids while having their breakfast in here before
07:11school would be ideal.
07:12Really.
07:14We liked the bedrooms upstairs.
07:15They were quite roomy.
07:16Quite large.
07:17Really loved the natural light coming in with the big bay windows.
07:19Right.
07:19That was something very nice.
07:21I'm not a fan of the outside covered area.
07:25Looks like it's had it's day.
07:27Yeah.
07:28Definitely a little bit of a fixer up.
07:30Yeah.
07:34Welcome back.
07:35How was the rest of the house tour?
07:37We love it.
07:37It was awesome.
07:38Yeah.
07:38It's pretty incredible that they've added a whole extra floor considering the foundation's
07:42over a hundred years old.
07:43Absolutely.
07:43So it's pretty impressive.
07:44And I mean we've also got this massive backyard.
07:47Oh it's huge.
07:50We're sitting on almost three acres.
07:52Yes.
07:52Yes.
07:53Looks like we've got a flying fox I might take for a spin later but do you think there's
07:57enough room here for the kids and the dogs to kind of.
07:59I think there's more than enough room here.
08:01Absolutely.
08:01Yeah.
08:02It needs a little work but it you know that's something I would enjoy doing anyway so it's
08:06very lovely.
08:07Okay.
08:08So we've checked off a few boxes on house number one.
08:10So let's play a little game called Guess the Price.
08:12What do you think this whole property's worth?
08:13I'm thinking around 2.8.
08:152.8.
08:15Okay.
08:16I'm going to say 3.1.
08:19It's actually listed for 2.4.
08:21Oh wow.
08:22Oh wow.
08:23Yeah.
08:23You get all of this.
08:24Wow.
08:27I think it's almost underpriced for what it is.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Honestly.
08:32It's quite a beautiful spot.
08:33Absolutely.
08:33Yeah.
08:34But maybe we're out of our minds.
08:37What do you say we go check out house number two?
08:38Let's do it.
08:39Nice.
08:39Come on.
08:43After the break we tour a home that couldn't be any different from the first property.
08:48It's definitely a different style than the last one we looked at.
08:50Very different.
08:51Very different.
08:51Talk about polar opposites.
09:03We're here in the serene haven of Deep Cove with our house hunters Jonathan and his wife's
09:07friend Bronwyn.
09:08Earlier we toured an overgrown fixer upper with ample acreage perfect for a hands on project.
09:14Now get ready for a complete change of pace.
09:17Our next property is the polar opposite of the last.
09:20I have a feeling this one might just surprise Jonathan and Bronwyn.
09:30Okay house number two on the hunt.
09:32Obviously we're still out in the countryside but this one's got a little bit more of a modern
09:36feel to it.
09:37I think you can tell.
09:38First impressions.
09:40It's beautiful.
09:41It's beautiful.
09:41It's definitely a different style than the last one we looked at.
09:43Very different.
09:44Very different.
09:44Talk about polar opposites.
09:46Well I say we get out of the rain and pop inside and take a look.
09:50What do you say?
09:50Absolutely.
09:51Let's do it.
09:56Wow.
10:02Okay.
10:03This is something else isn't it?
10:04It is beautiful.
10:06Yeah.
10:06It's big.
10:07It's very open.
10:08Very open.
10:08Yes.
10:09I mean the ceiling height.
10:10Well it's got a lovely gas fireplace there which is pretty neat.
10:13Which is different than the wood burning fireplace.
10:14It's a little different than the last one.
10:15It gives us a little bit of a different thought.
10:17Then again it's the opposite of a 1910 so it's a little different.
10:20About 115 years off.
10:22Yeah a little bit.
10:24So I think we should probably divide and conquer.
10:27Why don't you guys take a look around the kitchen, check out some of the bedrooms and
10:30then I'll meet you outside.
10:31We'll do.
10:32Okay.
10:32See you in a bit.
10:37Yeah it's a very incredible open concept.
10:39Personally I prefer a little more privacy for rooms.
10:42Great for entertaining.
10:44So very beautiful.
10:46Not as farmhouse.
10:48Not very farmhouse.
10:50This place would be great for entertaining.
10:51Do you like the double match the black and the top?
10:54I do actually.
10:55Very nice.
10:56Lots of storage space as well.
10:57And the kids would be, that would be a lot of sitting for the kids around here.
11:00Keep an eye on them.
11:01Absolutely.
11:05In the main bedroom really loved the walk in closet.
11:08My wife does have a considerable amount of shoes.
11:10So that was lovely to see storage for that.
11:11And the his or her sinks.
11:12That was a very nice touch.
11:13Yeah.
11:14A space for a games room if you like.
11:16Having a swimming pool.
11:17That's something we didn't even think about in looking at a home.
11:19So that's something to take into good consideration.
11:26All right.
11:27What did you think?
11:28It's a lovely property.
11:29It's a big house.
11:30It's beautiful.
11:31It's pretty incredible.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Did you notice that there's also a separate suite?
11:35We did.
11:35The guest cottage would be nice for in-laws to visit.
11:37So you get a little bit of separation.
11:38I mean, I don't know if visit is the right word.
11:39I think they'd move right in if they had that.
11:41I think you're right, yes.
11:41And obviously the pool, the hot tub.
11:44Yeah.
11:44There's a lot of room to work with.
11:45There's a lot going on.
11:46It's a big entertainment house.
11:47You don't want the dogs in the pool?
11:48Yeah.
11:49There's a whole pond back there that can go for a swim.
11:51Yeah.
11:52So now comes the fun part.
11:53Obviously this is a bit of a contrast from the first home.
11:56Yes.
11:56But what do we think this one's listed for?
11:59I'm going to say 3.6.
12:013.6?
12:03I'll say 3.3.
12:053.3, 3.6.
12:08So this is listed at just under 4.2 million.
12:10Okay.
12:11Wow.
12:12A little off.
12:13I mean, you are getting a full acre of space here and it's brand new.
12:16Sorry.
12:19A little over what we were looking for, but I'm sure there's probably a little bit of wiggle room there.
12:24So if we all pitch in, we can all get it.
12:26We could do it.
12:26Yeah.
12:26Okay.
12:27I think there's enough room for all of us too.
12:28We'll rotate the guest cottage.
12:29Exactly.
12:30Yeah.
12:31All right.
12:32Should we head off and check out house number three?
12:35Let's do it.
12:35There's still one left on the list.
12:36Absolutely.
12:37After you.
12:40After the break, I meet with Charlotte to find out what makes Deep Cove such a peaceful town.
12:45And then we check out our final property, this classic country-style home with its very own vineyard.
12:51I think the winery is amazing.
12:53I've never even considered a vineyard, so that would require some research.
13:07After soaking in the serene ambiance and enjoying the picturesque views, I take a moment to chat with Charlotte to
13:13discover why Deep Cove is such a peaceful town.
13:17Hi, Charlotte.
13:18Hi.
13:18I'm Jeff.
13:19Nice to meet you.
13:20Thanks so much for having us today.
13:21Thanks for coming.
13:22So we are in Deep Cove Market.
13:24You are.
13:25You've arrived.
13:25We've arrived.
13:26I've been in town for a couple days and I've heard about it from probably six different people.
13:30So obviously you're doing something, right?
13:32Love that.
13:32But tell me a little bit about the history, you know, when you took it over.
13:35So my husband and our business partners bought the market from Rosemary, the previous owner.
13:40And then when was it originally built?
13:42Because it looks like it's been here for quite some time.
13:44So the original company, Deep Cove Trading Co., started in 1942.
13:48That was an actual trading co.
13:49It was actually Deep Cove Trading Co.
13:51Okay.
13:51And then it was sort of a corner store and then Rosemary bought it and really established it into being
13:56the community hub that it is today.
13:58Feels like everyone knows each other here.
14:00It really does have that vibe here and we love it.
14:03Like there's so many regulars.
14:04You're coming in, saying hi to them.
14:05We have a couple people there in here multiple times a day.
14:08They're in for breakfast.
14:08They pop in for a midday coffee and they help us close it out at night.
14:13I mean, we're in Deep Cove here.
14:14It's a sense of community.
14:16I mean, even just looking around, it feels like we are in the countryside.
14:19Yeah, it's beautiful.
14:19You've got like farm and then ocean, just like a few blocks that way.
14:23It's just to kind of slow down a bit.
14:25You really take in nature.
14:26You take it all in.
14:28In the summer, it becomes a lot more sort of happening.
14:30There's like weekly farmers markets that happen down the road.
14:33There's some beautiful hiking around here and just lots of adventure.
14:36Just get rid of that hustle and bustle of the city.
14:38100%.
14:42It makes sense why people are leaving the city to move right here.
14:45100%.
14:45Yeah.
14:46Well, thank you so much for having us.
14:47This has been incredible.
14:49I think I'm going to have to get a breakfast sandwich and a hat on the way out.
14:51I highly recommend it.
14:52Perfect.
14:59Now onto our third and final property.
15:02A classic country style home with plenty of space.
15:05Let's see if this might just be the one that our hunters are looking for.
15:08Okay.
15:10House number three.
15:11Now this one I think checks a lot of boxes.
15:13This to me screams country estate.
15:16It does.
15:17Yes.
15:17We're sitting on five acres.
15:18We've got five beds, four baths inside.
15:21But what are your impressions, you know, first taking a walk up looking at the exterior?
15:25It's a big place.
15:26Yeah.
15:27It's like the big wide steps and entryways is quite something to look at.
15:30Yeah.
15:30I actually enjoy it.
15:31The drive in is actually quite picturesque.
15:32It is.
15:32It's very inviting.
15:33It's a very inviting pad.
15:35So I love that.
15:36First thoughts are lots of room for the dogs and the kids to run around.
15:40Absolutely.
15:40May be inclined to get some goats or ponies if you keep this up.
15:43Well, hey.
15:43It's going to be a tough decision to make.
15:45What do you say we take a look inside?
15:46Yeah.
15:47Let's do it.
16:02Well, does this scream country living or what?
16:05It does.
16:05It's actually nice.
16:06It's very nice.
16:07Now, I know you don't love the open concept, but the kitchen's got kind of right a bit of
16:11a hybrid.
16:12You know, it's a little open.
16:13It's not super open.
16:14Yeah.
16:15It's a mix of both.
16:18The kitchen, again, is great for entertaining.
16:20You still get a bit of separation.
16:21It's a lot of space, for sure.
16:23Yeah.
16:23A little bit closed off, but you still have that, like, open family-style dinners and the
16:29kids playing and helping cook and stuff.
16:32The size of the property, obviously, being an acreage, is quite appealing.
16:35Five full acres.
16:36Yeah.
16:37Yeah.
16:37That's quite large, which is great.
16:40And the rooms seem a bit spread apart, but quite large, which is appealing.
16:44I like it.
16:45It's like a mixture between modern and, like, the old rustic.
16:50I love the fireplaces that they have.
16:53It does really feel like a family home.
16:55Exactly.
16:56You can still entertain in here and have some separation.
16:59Yeah.
16:59Exactly.
17:03Now, if you guys want to go for a little exploration around here, I'm going to head out back and
17:08see if I can find maybe a hot tub or two.
17:10Okay.
17:11Let's do that.
17:11Okay.
17:12Okay.
17:22Oh, wow.
17:24I love that river rock.
17:25That's something else.
17:26Oh, yeah.
17:27It's gorgeous.
17:27This is wood burning like the first place.
17:29Oh.
17:30So, this may be something in the cards.
17:33Yeah, it might be.
17:34And it's like a separated room, just like you like.
17:37It is.
17:37Yes.
17:37Absolutely.
17:38It's good for entertaining.
17:39You can close things off in case your relatives are over.
17:41Yeah.
17:42Not so bad.
17:42It's good.
17:43And the wood flooring I like.
17:44Yeah, I like that too.
17:45Yes, it's nice.
17:46I think Alexis is really going to like this.
17:48I think you're right.
17:49Why don't we go find Jeff and see what's outside.
17:51Okay.
17:51Great.
18:03Well, what do we think?
18:05We think it's lovely.
18:06It's got a lot of character.
18:07A lot to discover?
18:08Absolutely.
18:09It's very impressive.
18:10What were the overall thoughts of the interior?
18:13It's very modern versus like rustic.
18:17It's very nice.
18:18It's in between.
18:19Like it's modern, rustic, but it's huge.
18:26And it's not just the interior.
18:28I mean, the property.
18:29We've got a whole vineyard behind us.
18:30And I mean, spoiler alert, hot tub behind us as well.
18:34It's five acres.
18:35So it's a lot of property, but it looks like they've really used the space.
18:39It's well maintained.
18:41They maximize it, right?
18:41Yeah.
18:41They maximize it.
18:42I mean, I've never even considered a vineyard, so that would require some research, but I
18:46think it's pretty incredible itself.
18:51I think as we came outside, the winery was a bit of a shock.
18:54I think the winery is amazing.
18:56It's definitely something that you don't come across too often.
19:00Our place was lovely to see outside.
19:01Then we've got the hot tub, which is larger than life itself.
19:05So that was a bit of a shock, but something we would probably enjoy as a family.
19:08It's a lot to take in.
19:10It definitely is.
19:11It really is, yes.
19:12So I mean, considering we're almost speechless, we might as well start playing another guessing
19:16game.
19:17Right.
19:17What do we think it's listed for?
19:20I'm going to say 2.7.
19:222.7?
19:22Okay.
19:23Yes.
19:23I'm going to say 3.
19:253?
19:26Okay, you're getting warmer.
19:28You're pretty close.
19:29It's listed for just under 3.1 million.
19:31Okay.
19:32Great.
19:36I think the value is a great price where it sits.
19:39The vineyard is something we never entertained.
19:41You know, I'd have to look into it a little bit.
19:43I'll start with persuading Alexis with the vineyard and then we'll just go from there.
19:50So, it's been a long day.
19:52We've seen three very different properties.
19:54I mean, starting from 1910 going all the way to basically this year.
19:57Yeah.
19:58Yes.
19:58I think we have a little bit to digest, a lot to think about.
20:01Obviously, we can run it by the family, you can give your input and you probably won't
20:04have any input.
20:05Well, I know my wife will say it all.
20:07Yeah.
20:12When we return, it's time for Jonathan and Bronwyn to make the big decision.
20:16Did you have a chance to actually make a decision last night?
20:18Yes.
20:19My wife and I, Alexis, discussed it.
20:28Jonathan and Bronwyn have had some time to weigh their options.
20:31Now, it's time to see if they've made the big decision.
20:35Okay.
20:36Good to see you again.
20:37Me too.
20:38Nice to see you too.
20:39Lots to ponder last night.
20:41Big decisions to be made.
20:42Yes.
20:43So, we saw three pretty unique, pretty incredible properties yesterday.
20:47We sure did, yes.
20:48Why don't we start by going over a little bit of a recap.
20:50I mean, let's start with house number one.
20:54Secluded, you've got so much room for the girls and the dogs to run around.
20:58Obviously, you know, over a hundred years old, that foundation.
21:01The privacy was definitely what you're looking for.
21:04Yeah.
21:05What else did you like about that one?
21:06What jumped out at you?
21:07The woodwork was something that really stuck out to us.
21:10I've never seen anything like that.
21:11No.
21:11Exactly, right?
21:12It was very few and far between, I think, you come across something like that.
21:15I mean, next off, we had house number two.
21:17Obviously, a little newer.
21:19Yes.
21:19What did you guys think about that one?
21:20That was pretty incredible.
21:21It was beautiful, bold.
21:22I mean, probably one of the nicer homes I've seen.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Probably larger than life itself.
21:27For that, like the finishing was really lovely.
21:29The pool was a nice touch.
21:30Yeah.
21:31It's like taking Beverly Hills and just popping it in the countryside.
21:33Absolutely, yeah.
21:34A little bit of both.
21:35It's not bad.
21:36Yeah.
21:36And then our last stop, we went to house number three.
21:40Five acres.
21:41Yeah.
21:41Your own vineyard.
21:43The old flooring was nice.
21:44When you come into the kitchen and you look at the River Rock fireplace, it's really beautiful,
21:48so that's something you don't see anymore.
21:50It was nice.
21:51I loved the island and it was open concept, but it was still kind of enclosed.
21:57Yeah, still a little cozy.
21:57Yeah.
21:58That's probably one of the biggest hot tubs I've ever seen.
22:00It was like an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
22:01Yeah.
22:01Yeah.
22:04And obviously we have to thank you, Bron.
22:06I mean, Alexis couldn't make it.
22:08What did Alexis have to say after we went home and debriefed with everything?
22:11She definitely loved the first one and the third.
22:14The vineyard, it's fun at first, but then when you have to think about it, it is a lot of
22:19work.
22:19There is that allure, but you know, and also, you gotta get your hands dirty, get to work.
22:24Should we try by just eliminating one?
22:27Yeah, number two.
22:28Number two?
22:28Yeah.
22:28Yeah.
22:29Okay, so we'll remove Hollywood from the equation.
22:31Yes, yeah.
22:32And we'll pass that off, and now really it's just down to one and three.
22:35Both have that country feel, one's a little more secluded, one's a little more work.
22:38Yeah.
22:39Did you have a chance to actually make a decision last night?
22:41Yes, my wife and I, Alexis, discussed it, and we were going with number one.
22:45Number one!
22:47And that was because it was a pure country feeling that it hit the essence of country.
22:51The second we crawled up that driveway, I was like, this is country living, and I think that is going
22:55to be absolutely perfect.
22:57Yes, I agree.
22:58Well, congratulations.
22:59That's exciting.
22:59Thank you very much.
23:00Thanks again, guys.
23:03I'm so happy we helped John find his perfect country home.
23:07I know him and the family are going to be incredibly happy there.
23:10Thank you so much for tuning in.
23:12We'll see you next time.
23:12News me and we're good to see you next time.
23:18Bye.
23:19You
