02:02One of the joys of having two acres is there's plenty of room for all my new ambitious projects,
02:08inside the workshop and out.
02:11But as a newcomer to the region, I've also discovered the real challenge can be accessing this lovely space.
02:19I've been here now for a couple of months and I've been driving around in my van.
02:24Cornish lanes are so narrow and so tight, especially around here,
02:28I'm so sick of being forced to drive into the bush
02:32and scraping the whole side of my van on some brambles and bushes.
02:35It brings me to tears almost every time.
02:39So, I've made a purchase and I've bought myself an old Defender.
02:45I'm a big fan of buying stuff off the internet,
02:48but sometimes end up regretting not seeing things in the flesh first.
02:52So, fingers crossed, it's going to arrive in one piece.
02:57I'm expecting delivery today,
02:59but I'm not the only one who's finding local transport a challenge.

03:10Buying a house, buying a workshop, there's always a compromise
03:12and the little lane on the way in here was the compromise,
03:16or one of the compromises.
03:18It was a pain for me moving all my equipment in here and my machinery
03:22because it's so narrow, the trucks can't get down.
03:25So, I'm going to jump in the car, go and find him.
03:28I don't even know if the thing runs.
03:30I'm going to have to use Maria's much nicer vehicle
03:33and hope I can stay out of the bushes.

03:52down the side of the workshop were scaffolding boards
03:55that used to hold, I guess, the food or the bedding in.
03:58So, we just carried them up here,
04:01plonked them down, literally on top of the grass,
04:03no groundwork at all, and dwelled them together.
04:06Because we knew, after having, like,
04:08been in limbo for so long before the move,
04:10we knew that the first thing we wanted to do
04:11was get some stuff in the ground.

09:56This pool was created more than 50 years ago to give the local kids somewhere safe to swim.
10:02They made it by blasting a hole with dynamite borrowed from a local quarry.
10:07They didn't mess about in the 70s.
10:10But today, it needs something a little more subtle to keep it safe.
10:15It's all about the community, and the thing was, it was unusable because it was so dangerous
10:21to try and walk around.
10:22The concrete had worn away, covered in algae.
10:26There were so many rocks in the pool, and I was chatting to one of the old guys who lived
10:30in the village who said, you know, well, the dags, every year, twice a year, would come
10:35down, take the bung out, empty the pool, clear all the rocks out, and make it safe.
10:40Give it all a good scrub.
10:41And I thought, I thought it was quite a good tradition to maybe get going again.
10:45You say about a bung.

10:53So the bung was put in specifically to drain the pool, to get all the big rocks out that

12:14We're hoping to come up with a safer solution for draining the pool.
12:19This rock pool is a tricky one.
12:21It really is an engineering challenge, sorting this out.
12:24We've both been thinking and trying to plan and think of an idea,
12:27but we keep concluding that we need some measurements.

12:37and measure the diameter of that pipe that's sticking out the wall.

14:05So, after a few more calculations, and Sam safely out the pool,
14:10we think we might have a plan.
14:28Back home, I've got my new vehicle safely inside the workshop.
14:32But it looks like underneath might be as bad as the bodywork.
14:36The whole back cross member is completely rotten.
14:40Bearing in mind, I've got this so that we can tow projects around,
14:43the pickup projects, and the tow bar is attached to that cross member,
14:49I'm going to need to replace it.
14:51That steel bar provides support for the chassis, engine, and transmission,
14:56so needs to be in good nick.
14:59I'm basically about to cut the whole back of the chassis off,
15:02and this rear cross member is tying the two chassis legs.
15:06These run all the way down the length of the car
15:07and are tied together with this bit at the back.
15:10It's a really, really structurally important part,
15:12which is why I need to replace it, because it's rusty.
15:15So, I think I need to cut, weld a piece of steel across
15:18to hold the chassis legs where they are.
15:21Then I can cut further back,
15:22and my little brace will hold it nice and tight together.
15:25Then I can prepare the area, trim, and offer up the new piece.

16:18to allow a little bit of movement.
16:20And then we can fire up the welder.

16:47Although we've only just arrived in Cornwall, something that I've quickly learnt about taking over management of a two-acre
16:54site is that there's always something that needs doing.
16:58On top of everything else that's going on with the house, the garden, the field, the pond, the workshop, part
17:05of buying this place meant taking part ownership of this lane.
17:10Which means all these potholes and dips and ruts is now my responsibility.
17:15Of course it is.
17:16One more thing.
17:19And on top of all of that, every time John, who does the ground works here, every time he turns
17:24up in his truck, he moans at me because of the state of the lane on the way in and
17:28his truck grounds out.
17:30So I thought this area is quite bad.

17:34Once you get a puddle starting, when the tyres go through, it chucks all the fines to the side and
17:39it just continuously happens until you end up with a deeper puddle.
17:42All the sandy small bits get shoved out.

17:47John's brought a rock crusher with him, which he thinks could help provide a solution.

19:10So some of these could have just spent their life as a stationary engine powering a machine.

20:24There's nothing holding it from jumping off the belt, so it's so, off the pulley.
20:30So other than, well, alignment is absolutely key.

25:20We've had all this rough machined by a local marine engineer.
25:23And then I've taken it home and finished it all on my lathe.

25:27You know, that's a much nicer, stronger version.
25:29So basically, I've made a clamp out of those.

25:34So we're going to clamp up with these bolts.
25:37So these little tags weld in here, three of them.

25:47They are in the flange, which is in the bottom of the tube.
25:51We then weld the tube on.
25:53And then weld a door on with a little hinge.
25:58This slides up inside the pipe.
26:01It's a steel pipe encapsulated in the concrete.

26:06So it's super strong.
26:07Yeah, yeah.
26:08Having a hinged door means Chris won't have to physically remove the plug.
26:12He can just open and shut it instead.
26:15Much safer all round.

26:18So we just need to weld all these bits together.

26:26I need to make sure my welding is up to scratch as this new plug needs to be pretty tough
26:31to stand up to those Cornish saltwater tides.
26:35I'm also going to create an additional seal made from neoprene.
26:40It's a synthetic rubber that you find in wetsuits, and it should make things even more watertight.
26:47Now the neoprene's in, the lid's shut, the bolts are done up, all the wells are on.

26:54It's like the reverse of this being in the rock pool, stopping the water to go through.

27:45Before we return to Mousel, I've roped in Sam to help me get my vehicle back looking its best.

28:11This is also going to help Sam to hammer these dents out because getting the paint out of the way
28:17is going to help to actually see the metal, see what we're actually working with.

28:26I feel sure those Cornish roads are going to put a few dents into this machine, but I want them
28:32to be my own dents.
28:33So Sam's hydraulic ram will help iron out these old ones.
