00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
00:04The ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08I want mine.
00:09Take me over here.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14That looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:15Perfect fit, oh my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit to win the ultimate prize.
00:26I haven't got a clue.
00:27I can cry, I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:37the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:45perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53It's a lot to play for and if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:56Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:02All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:06to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:12What a transformation.
01:14In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking.
01:20Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:24The dream is real, the stakes are high.
01:26This is Chateau DIY Win the Dream.
01:39Previously on Win the Dream.
01:42Four pairs were challenged to transform the Chateau garage spaces.
01:47Yay, rock and roll.
01:47So excited.
01:49Creating sumptuous dining rooms with a bespoke console table.
01:56Each pair demonstrated their design and DIY skills.
02:00But for one, the dream came to an end.
02:02The pair leaving us today are Brie and Rene.
02:07Leaving three pairs still in with a chance of winning the keys to this fantastic French property.
02:15We want to prove and show our skills and talents to its fullest,
02:19which I don't feel we've had the chance to do up to this moment.
02:22But we have some really good ideas ourselves, so bring it on.
02:26I'm feeling really good this morning.
02:28I'm excited about the new challenge.
02:29Obviously it was great to win, so yeah, looking forward to seeing what we're looking for this week.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Bring it on.
02:35Not that we're cocky.
02:36How competitive.
02:38Working with Andre and Hayley in the last challenge,
02:40we knobbed out very well around the team, right?
02:42Those two girls are powerhouses, so they're definitely the ones to meet.
02:51Good morning. How are we all?
02:53Morning.
02:54Good.
02:55Very good.
02:55Refreshed and ready for your second challenge?
02:58Oh, yes.
02:58Absolutely.
02:59I'd like each pair to create a reading room.
03:04A reading room can be part library and also study,
03:08which is the perfect place for guests and chatelands to work in during the day and retire to in the
03:14evening.
03:16I'd like each reading room to contain at least one custom-built bookcase.
03:22You'll have 500 euros for your renovation.
03:28So make every euro count.
03:31I'll be looking for concept and creativity, techniques, functionality and overall look and finish.
03:37You'll have six days to complete this challenge.
03:40As an individual challenge, you'll be judged in your pairs.
03:44And remember, after this challenge, one pair will be leaving the competition.
03:50Your tools are waiting in your rooms.
03:53Your time starts now.
03:57With the challenge set, our pairs head in to start their initial designs.
04:11Ooh.
04:12Oh.
04:13Wow, this is nice.
04:15Nice room.
04:17I'm really pleased with the room.
04:19Love the aspect.
04:20Dual aspect.
04:20Windows over the look in the garden.
04:22And we can also have maybe different spaces in there, like a reading space and a study space.
04:26that do come together at this time.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Oh.
04:30Oh, wow.
04:31Oh.
04:32This is gorgeous.
04:34Oh, my word.
04:36I love how the window's in the centre.
04:38Yeah.
04:39Gorgeous.
04:40Don't you wait to see?
04:41Ooh.
04:43Oh, wow.
04:44Oh, you know what's really nice?
04:45Windows.
04:46Windows.
04:47It's so light and it has high ceilings.
04:51Nice and tall for bookcases.
04:54I really like the windows.
04:55I wonder if we can do, like, a window nook.
04:58Yeah, that's a good idea.
05:01It isn't long before our pairs turn their thoughts to the key features that will make
05:05their rooms stand out.
05:06The bookshelf could make it out of MDF, but also have ornate panelling on the front.
05:11You could find a nice wardrobe, like we did yours at home.
05:15Yeah.
05:15I'd like to upcycle something rather than create something out of MDF.
05:19Yeah.
05:20The bookcase could have a ladder of what sorts on it, even when we're on it.
05:23So the ladder could be taken.
05:25If the bookcase is quite high up, we could take it and move it from side to side like
05:29you would get in a library.
05:31Yeah, with two hooks and, like, a rail.
05:33It would be really nice to watch.
05:34When I think of library, I do think of leather chairs, a bureau maybe with a leather top.
05:40Yeah.
05:41That kind of thing, nice and chunky.
05:43If you think of aiding room, you definitely do think of panelling, don't you?
05:46Yeah, and I think you probably think of quite a dark colour as well.
05:49But it's...
05:49How do you feel about a deep, greeny...
05:52Do you know...?
05:53I like it, like an olive-y, dark olive green.
05:56Yeah.
05:57I'd like some panelling.
05:58Panelling?
05:59I'm 100% off a panelling.
06:00It feels very vintage library style, right, doesn't it?
06:02Yeah, so maybe a data rail going all the way around.
06:05And then square panelling.
06:08Yeah.
06:08There.
06:09I'm feeling quite pastily colours.
06:12Yeah.
06:13We need a lovely desk and then a chair to sit at the desk.
06:16I think it needs to feel really luxurious.
06:19Are we going to get the taxi there with squirrels?
06:21Yeah.
06:24In the RSC, they have a lovely display of books,
06:27almost like a Harry Potter moment with all the books.
06:30There's been a spell and all the books are then flowing through the room,
06:33spilling out all the pages.
06:34This room is really inspiring you with lots of ideas.
06:38They come thick and fast.
06:40Penny made two lists on A4 paper,
06:43so we've got a lot of ideas to get through.
06:44I don't want to have the same stress and anxiety
06:47that I had in the first challenge,
06:48and I don't want to run out of time.
06:50We're going to the caboot sale.
06:52We're going to be on the lookout for lamps.
06:55Get a load of books.
06:55Any furniture.
06:56I don't know what the caboot sales are like.
06:58I think we've got to use the locals to our advantage here.
07:00Yeah.
07:01This is what we've been waiting for.
07:05Let's do this.
07:06Yeah, let's go.
07:06Come on, let's go.
07:08We've been in chateaus that have got libraries and areas like that,
07:12so we've got lots of ideas and lots of inspiration for it,
07:15but just haven't created an enormous bookcase.
07:19But we'll be all right.
07:23Cool, let's do it.
07:24We're definitely feeling a lot more comfortable in this space
07:27compared to the last challenge.
07:29It's a lot easier to come up with an idea that is chateau-appropriate.
07:37Let's go.
07:38With their heads full of ideas...
07:40Oh, wow.
07:42..the pairs are heading out to a local Vida Grenier
07:44to find some inspiration to bring their reading rooms to life.
07:48Actually, that could be, like, quite nice.
07:49That's a nice shot, isn't it?
07:51That's a nice combination, isn't it?
07:52Green and gold.
07:53That could work.
07:54That could work.
07:55Right.
07:55See, that might go with the gold as well.
07:57It will go really well with the gold.
07:58I'm going to see if I can get all this for €10.
08:0010 euro.
08:0010 euro?
08:01Where?
08:03Bon.
08:04OK, d'accord?
08:06OK.
08:0610 euro?
08:07Merci!
08:09Bed palm?
08:11I could do it with one of those.
08:14There's nothing going with one here, isn't there?
08:17Over here?
08:17It's mainly clouds.
08:18Reading rooms for all ages, not just adults.
08:20Your children are on holiday with their parents
08:23and even their grandparents come to the chateau.
08:24It's a place for them to go.
08:26Hmm.
08:26Hmm.
08:29Interesting.
08:29I like it.
08:31I would like to fill it with kids' books
08:32because kids like to rummage around and find things.
08:35Full of treasures?
08:36Yeah, treasure box of knowledge.
08:38A couple of nice lamps will really make it, won't it?
08:40On the desk.
08:42Order?
08:4215.
08:4415.
08:45About dues?
08:46About dues, yes, yes.
08:47Yes, of course.
08:49Perfect.
08:51OK.
08:53D'accord?
08:54It's an old dictionary.
08:54So if we paste this on the wall, people could still be learning.
08:57We've had a little bit of an epiphany that we'd like to do a fireplace,
09:00but the reality is we might not.
09:03But if not, it'll go on the desk.
09:04Yeah.
09:05Yeah.
09:05Mercy.
09:07Thank you so much.
09:08Thank you. Mercy.
09:13Any requests?
09:16Stuart, come on.
09:20Everywhere we go, he always manages to gather a crowd.
09:24We have to pull them away and move them along.
09:26Ah, mercy.
09:28Have a lovely day.
09:29You too.
09:31On to the next one.
09:32The purple and lime pairs might have bagged some bargains,
09:36giving them a starting point for their designs.
09:39But the tangerine pair have yet to make a purchase.
09:44I reckon we go back home, start building the framework for the library.
09:48Yeah.
09:48And then tomorrow we go back out to some of the places we know we can get stuff for cheap
09:53and make sure we find what we need then.
09:55I'm glad we've seen it, but we don't want to waste our time here, right?
09:58Okay.
09:59Let's go.
10:05With a distinct lack of bookcases at the V de Grenier,
10:09Hayley has turned to the local online marketplace for their key piece.
10:13So I've found a triple wardrobe online.
10:15I've contacted the seller and she's happy for us to go and pick it up,
10:18so we've come now to get it.
10:20I hope it's going to be the right thing for the room.
10:22Oh, wow.
10:23That's gorgeous.
10:24It's nice and wide as well.
10:26Yeah.
10:26Yeah, that's perfect.
10:27So it's €40.
10:28Yeah, please.
10:29Thank you very much.
10:30All right.
10:31Enjoy.
10:32I'll get it in the van.
10:38Right.
10:39Thank you so much.
10:41There you go.
10:43All right.
10:50Ooh.
10:51Oh, hello.
10:51Hello.
10:53How are you getting on?
10:54Oh.
10:55Yeah, we're getting started.
10:56Well.
10:57We have got this lovely curve on the wall behind you
10:59and we thought it would be a really nice effect if we can
11:02paste these onto the wall.
11:04Always learning in a reading room.
11:06So it sounds like you're turning this wall, which could be a potential problem,
11:10into a bit of a feature for the room.
11:12Yes.
11:12How much did you pay for it?
11:15Un euro.
11:15One euro.
11:17Yeah.
11:18Potentially saving you a hundred pounds worth of wallpaper.
11:22Yeah.
11:22Amazing, really.
11:23Clever.
11:24I get the impression you're really looking forward to making a bookcase from scratch.
11:27I would love to be able to give them the chance to do it, so I just only hope I've
11:31got the skills and design to be able to do that.
11:33What's the colour scheme?
11:34We're thinking on going for a French grey-blue palette with possibly a little bit of green, a little bit
11:41of gold, possibly a little bit of gilding.
11:44And I think that also sometimes gives it a bit of a worn look as well.
11:49A distressed look.
11:50Yes.
11:51Of course, you two are both avid upcyclers, so if anybody can put it off, it's you, Pear.
11:56Thanks, Mike.
11:57See you later.
11:58Bye.
11:59OK.
11:59All right.
12:02With their flat pack wardrobe ready to be transformed into a bookcase...
12:06It is all in pieces.
12:09Oh, wow.
12:11It's massive.
12:12Hayley's keen to show Andrea the goods.
12:15It didn't come with any instructions, it came with a box of pieces.
12:18But it saves us having to take it to pieces.
12:25So, I think if we were to cut this down, we'd probably have to take this bit off and maybe
12:32cut it down about there and rejoining it, but it has got the curved detail.
12:40But it's flat on this edge.
12:42Yeah.
12:42This is definitely more of a puzzle than we thought.
12:56This is for our window seat.
12:59Gonna try and make the base now.
13:02It's a new day at the chateau.
13:04Oh, my God.
13:05That's so accurate.
13:06And the pairs are busy with their reading room challenge.
13:09Hopefully this is a little bit easier than wallpapering.
13:11And cheaper than wallpapering.
13:13This saves our budget a lot of money.
13:16In the last challenge, best friends Hayley and Andrea spent most of their budget on paint.
13:20So are keen not to make the same mistake this time.
13:28Right.
13:29The colours aren't that great.
13:31Aren't they?
13:31We could buy that cheap mat and we could mix it ourselves.
13:35We'd need just a really dark green.
13:38Oh.
13:39A green olive oxide.
13:42What about getting a dark, a black?
13:45Yes.
13:46Should we just go with that?
13:47At least it shows you.
13:48So, yeah.
13:49And we could just put a bit in and then it'll break down.
13:52It's basically colouring.
13:54Should we just get it?
13:55Let's do it.
13:58Fingers crossed this works.
14:00So if the guy had mixed it, it would have been 180 euros.
14:03And if this is successful, we've got 12 litres of paint and it's going to cost us just under 50.
14:11Yeah.
14:11Yeah.
14:12So it will be a real win if it works.
14:17Keep the faith!
14:21Chris and Paloma are also heading out.
14:23Okay.
14:24With no items yet bought.
14:25Oh!
14:26Let's go.
14:27They're on a mission for their bookcase and window nook.
14:30Really want to make sure that we get what we need to get today.
14:34We're both eager to make sure we've got the right pieces.
14:36So without doing that, we're oohing and aahing about even where to put like the panel in
14:40because that's going to dictate how big the bookcase is.
14:42So keen to crack on with the shopping.
14:44Go in here.
14:46Right.
14:46The furniture's over there.
14:48So these are the wardrobes.
14:52This is 40.
14:54Wow!
14:55It's 40 for that.
14:57That's amazing, isn't it?
15:00Would you take this off?
15:02Yeah.
15:03Take that off and then put it.
15:05That's not a bad bottom off, is it?
15:06It's really pretty, isn't it?
15:09Yeah, and that's shallower.
15:11That one's 52.
15:11This one's 40.
15:13Should we see if we can haggle this down a bit then?
15:26Yeah, it's going to be a bit of a jostle to get a thing up there, but as long as
15:29it all
15:30fits up, it's going to work a treat, we think.
15:32If we can reassemble half of it as well.
15:35All part of the fun, all right?
15:39As sound designer Stuart stays behind to get going on his DIY bookcase...
15:44That's square.
15:49..school office manager Penny heads out to buy furniture.
15:52A desk is one of the main things that we need because we need to have that working space.
16:00A table to go in the middle of the room, and also chairs to sit around that table.
16:07This will be really cosy for reading.
16:09It's a nice colour as well for reading.
16:14If these chairs were around a table, I could even have that red one in the corner.
16:20All these shelves are reclaimed.
16:22Once it's complete, we'll paint it in a colour that we have in the room,
16:26and then maybe Penny could draw something on it.
16:29I hope Penny comes back with a chaise longue that might give a different feel
16:32to the evening, relaxing side of the room.
16:35She's got a good eye, so I trust her 100%.
16:38Whether she trusts me 100% on this, I am not sure.
16:41We'll find out.
16:45I keep losing things as well.
16:47I've misplaced things.
16:50Yeah, no, I've lost it.
16:52Is it over there?
16:56With paint supplies secured, best friends Hayley and Andrea are on a roll.
17:00I'm just going to go walk around there and have a quick look.
17:03As they hunt for wallpaper.
17:05This one's nice.
17:07It's got mixed screens, and it's 22 euros.
17:10Oh, that's really nice.
17:11Let's grab some.
17:11Grab some.
17:12Yeah.
17:14108.
17:16No scene.
17:17Right, let's go.
17:18Let's go.
17:25Back at the chateau, Chris and Paloma make a start on painting their room.
17:29We have our base paint colour, and we've gone for a green.
17:36It's quite a minty green.
17:38You happy Paloma?
17:39I think so.
17:40It might be a little bit darker than I had been hoping, but...
17:43Let's see how we get on.
17:44And Hayley and Andrea are also hoping to go green with their cost-cutting pigment plan.
17:49My suspicion at this point is that we should have bought another tub of pigment.
17:56Well, it's a lovely colour.
17:59It's not the one that we wanted.
18:03Is that the colour?
18:05Yeah, that's it all in.
18:06We need another...
18:07Oh.
18:09It's...
18:09Cos this is 12 litres.
18:12Yeah.
18:13But it should have been...
18:15The colour should have been 2.5%.
18:16Oh, it's mixing in really well.
18:17Like, the concept works.
18:19Oh, my God.
18:20So, we've got a bit of black in, see?
18:22Yeah, I think you're right.
18:23It's going to make it grey.
18:25Yeah.
18:25And we don't want it to be grey.
18:29Oh.
18:31Oh, dear.
18:34Meanwhile, Chris and Paloma are making good progress with their green paint.
18:38Happy with the colour?
18:39Yeah.
18:39It's looking dark now, but it is later in the afternoon.
18:44Very nice.
18:45Right.
18:47Every little molecule's got to be mixed, hasn't it?
18:50Yeah.
18:52The motorised equivalent of washing paint dry.
18:57I get all the good drugs.
19:01But look at it on there.
19:03It is too grey.
19:05Yeah.
19:06Yeah.
19:07Green is the theme.
19:14Oh, someone's been busy.
19:16Hello.
19:17Hello.
19:18This is very green, isn't it?
19:21It's quite green, isn't it?
19:22Are you happy with how it's looking?
19:24Yeah.
19:24Yeah.
19:25It's drying a little bit darker than I had hoped, but we're just going to roll with it.
19:30It is quite a light room, though, isn't it?
19:32Yeah.
19:32I think we can get away with it.
19:33Okay.
19:33Okay.
19:34So, I note there's literally no furniture.
19:38All the furniture is outside at the moment, but once we've painted, we'll bring it in.
19:43We've got a big wardrobe, which we're going to put on top of a really massive bit of sideboard.
19:48We measured it, and it's literally about a centimetre off the ceiling, so it's going to be a really tall
19:54unit.
19:54And it's going to back onto this window seat, which we'll always cut the frame out for.
19:58Ah, nice.
19:59So, that's going to stick out exactly the same as the armoire buffet contraption.
20:05Yeah.
20:05It's a contraption, yeah.
20:06We can have some cupboards underneath the bookshelf, and then the bookshelf will have all the books.
20:11Is that the kind of thing you've built before?
20:13No.
20:13No.
20:15Great.
20:15Why not start now?
20:16Why not?
20:17Why not?
20:18We've only got a couple of days to do it, but bing, bang, bosh, and it'll all come together, hopefully.
20:22Bing, bang, bosh.
20:23That's the kind of precision we're looking for.
20:26So, what are your next steps?
20:28I think once we've finished this first round of painting, we're going to do our first set
20:31of panelling on this back wall.
20:33Right, it sounds like you've got a lot to do.
20:35Quite a lot.
20:35OK, I'm going to leave you two.
20:47What are you two up to?
20:50Hello.
20:50Oh, don't ask.
20:52Don't ask?
20:53Don't ask?
20:53What do you mean, don't ask?
20:54It's my job to ask.
20:55We're panelling.
20:56Can't you tell?
20:57And that's going to be painted?
20:58Green.
20:59Green.
21:00Where's the green paint?
21:02It's in here.
21:04Can we have a look?
21:06So, in order to save costs, we decided to buy white paint and put some pigment in.
21:12Which, to be fair, has worked brilliantly apart from it hasn't gone dark enough.
21:16Right.
21:17So, let me get this straight.
21:18You bought a load of white paint.
21:19Yeah.
21:19Which is super cheap.
21:20Good idea.
21:21Yeah.
21:21Yeah.
21:21You then dyed it green with green paint.
21:24Yeah.
21:24It wasn't quite dark enough.
21:26Yeah.
21:26And then you thought you'd add black paint, which made it grey.
21:29Yes.
21:31It makes sense, kind of, doesn't it?
21:33Yeah.
21:34Unfortunately, it didn't work.
21:35Yeah.
21:35And these are shades of greyish green, I think.
21:39But they're just not what we wanted.
21:40Right.
21:41There's method in the madness.
21:42There is a lot of madness, so I'm glad there's some method.
21:45Good.
21:46What's next in the room?
21:48Because there's currently a lot of space.
21:50Our next stage is the wardrobe that we've purchased.
21:53Triple d'or.
21:54Triple d'or.
21:55It's quite impressive.
21:56French style.
21:57Yeah.
21:57Yeah.
21:57Yeah.
21:58So, we bought it and it's in pieces.
22:01So, we've just got to figure out how it goes back together.
22:04So, just to be clear, you went out and bought not the right coloured paint deliberately,
22:08and an armoire that you don't know what it looks like yet deliberately.
22:11Yeah.
22:12You love a challenge, don't you?
22:13Yeah.
22:14We'll be all right.
22:15When you walk in and it's finished, you will be amazed.
22:18Promise?
22:18Yeah.
22:19Okay.
22:20I'm going to go out and walk back in, and it's going to look amazing.
22:23Yeah.
22:23Yeah.
22:26See you later.
22:33Penny's taking husband Stuart out to the Brocante to secure some furniture for their
22:37reading room.
22:39Look.
22:40And she's already spotted a bureau, perfect for their space.
22:43This is the kind of thing I'm looking for.
22:46I imagine something being a bit larger, but this can work.
22:52And it's got a lovely leather piece over the top that just needs cleaned up.
22:56I think we should have another look to see what else is here, but definitely consider this one.
23:01Okay.
23:01Yeah.
23:02Oh, hang on.
23:06That could be nice, eh?
23:07Oh, that could give us a choice.
23:08Yeah.
23:09Yeah.
23:09It's a fold-away card table.
23:11It is designed to be a flexible space, so this gives us more flexibility.
23:15It does.
23:15It's lovely.
23:18Back at the chateau, Andrea gets to grips with transforming their armoire wardrobe into a slimmed-down bookcase.
23:25It's all falling apart.
23:27I'd like to think I've got half a plan.
23:30That's the best way I can say it.
23:32So, now we've got this bit out, I'd like to cut these down a bit.
23:36Then it's got the curved legs, and then also it's hollow.
23:39So, if I lift that up, you can see there that that's all chain shape as well.
23:48Yeah.
23:49So, we'll have to cut all these pieces down.
23:52Pull this apart.
23:53Look at that.
23:54Oh, yeah, that's the lid out all right.
23:57Oh, at least that came out okay.
23:59I do like upcycling furniture and taking things apart and re-jigging them about.
24:04We'll keep this.
24:07Bit of jiggery-pokery.
24:09So, hopefully, Elon will be able to get it back together.
24:14In one piece.
24:18And Andrea's not the only one getting into an upcycling muddle.
24:22So, this is the base for the wardrobe, and because of the feet on the wardrobe, it's not going to
24:27be able to fit on top of what the item we're going to try and put it onto.
24:32So, we're going to take these, hopefully, the feet off.
24:36Oh, there we go.
24:36In one fell swoop.
24:39That was quite nice, actually.
24:42And that just means that we have a flat surface to be able to attach to the bottom piece now.
24:49Okay, turn that over.
24:51Okay, so.
24:55And there we have a base.
24:57As the sun sets on the second day of the challenge, Hayley has sourced some extra green pigment to brighten
25:04Andrea's spirits.
25:07Oh, look at that.
25:08Ooh.
25:09It's not green.
25:12Greeny grey.
25:14Oh, no!
25:21Look, you distracted us before I remembered I needed to stick the other half on.
25:25Right, can somebody please get Jesus?
25:27We need divine intervention.
25:40Ooh.
25:42Oh, wow.
25:46It's grey.
25:47It's grey.
25:47It's day three of the challenge, and the pairs press on with their reading room makeovers.
25:54To me, Hayley and Andrea are finally coming to terms with their pigment problems.
25:59What we've realised is that we both had a really good understanding of colour theory, and that you've black and
26:05white are shades, but we forgot.
26:07So, we should not have put any black in whatsoever.
26:09Not black.
26:10We should have used brown to darken it if we wanted to add depth to it.
26:14Yeah.
26:14And it's nice.
26:15Nice decision.
26:16But it's actually lovely.
26:17It's, like, really silvery, isn't it?
26:18Yeah, and we've got a name for it now, so it belongs here.
26:20Yeah.
26:21Chateau Grey.
26:21I wouldn't want it any other colour.
26:23Yeah.
26:24OK.
26:25Meanwhile, downstairs, Chris and Paloma are starting to realise the scale of their giant bookcase wall.
26:31You've got that side of Paloma, right?
26:32Yeah, but I'm getting quite squashed.
26:35That's OK.
26:36There we go.
26:36Don't let go of Paloma until you've given us warning.
26:39I'm not letting go.
26:41Oh.
26:42You got it?
26:43Yeah.
26:48OK.
26:49Can we fill it down?
26:49Stop.
26:50OK, down.
26:52Nice one.
26:55In the lime pears room, Stuart takes on the roller, whilst Penny focuses on the finer details.
27:02First, the colour that we got mixed up yesterday.
27:06I thought I'd like it.
27:07It's a nice kind of blue-grey.
27:09Our plan with the tape paint is to create a border around the room of yellow, create a contrast with
27:16the grey and frame the room in a gold-yellow.
27:20I really like this paint, actually.
27:23I'm really pleased with the colour.
27:24Yeah.
27:25I really like it.
27:26I'd actually have this in my own house.
27:27This could be our own house painting.
27:31Imagine.
27:32I am.
27:34Lifestyle, new life, enablement, dreams, you know, that's what...
27:39That's what this is about, isn't it?
27:40That's what we're all spiralling for, isn't it?
27:44Over in the purple pair's room, Hayley and Andrea are getting on with their painting.
27:49When it comes to painting, I just lose the will.
27:52However, there's quite a bit to be done.
27:54A lot of shadow grey.
27:56We took a bit of a gamble with the paint in order to save money.
28:00And it didn't quite pay off, but we still think it'll be OK.
28:06It just might not necessarily be the colour we originally wanted, but we're both happy with this colour now.
28:11It'll be reet.
28:13It'll be reet.
28:15It's OK, I'm OK, we're OK.
28:18Yeah.
28:18Yeah.
28:19Painting the wallpaper are really going to give it that feel of it being quite an intimate, comfortable space.
28:29You'd want to go sit there and just read a book on an evening.
28:33Can you push?
28:34Having already finished the bulk of their painting, Chris and Paloma's reading room is starting to take shape.
28:40Yep.
28:42Pretty good.
28:44It's not bad, is it?
28:45As they begin assembling their library wall with its matching window seating.
28:50Oh, I love it.
28:52Now that's pretty cool, right?
28:54It looks like a bench, doesn't it?
28:55Imagine sitting there reading your book.
28:58Very nice.
28:59Listening to the traffic of seals.
29:01We can always build a little, bring this further out a little bit and then...
29:07Put a piece of wood behind.
29:08Put a piece of wood.
29:09As long as that's frontin' it, yeah.
29:10Yeah.
29:11Well, good.
29:12Well done.
29:12Good decision.
29:13Nice.
29:14So now we're going to see about building this on top.
29:17Yeah.
29:18We preach a lot about sustainability in our own build, so when we're buying stuff which has had so much
29:23attention put into it, we don't want to just be using the bits we want and then chucking the rest
29:28of it away.
29:28We want to make sure we're using as much as possible and re-utilising all these materials, right?
29:34Yeah.
29:35So the plan is to put the wardrobe on top of the sideboard, but it literally is about a centimetre
29:45too high.
29:46So if we cut the legs off of that main bit...
29:50Oh, that's done.
29:58Hello everyone.
30:00Listen in please.
30:02Oh, there's marks.
30:03Oh.
30:04Hello.
30:05It's time for your second petite challenge, so come meet me at the workshop and I'll shed some light on
30:11what you're doing today.
30:13This is it.
30:14Tool staff.
30:16Brilliant.
30:17Ah, right.
30:19This will be a painting, self-portraits perhaps, a watercolour of your partner, that would be fun.
30:28Let's try and make sure you're closest to the bits of goodies on the other table so we can run
30:36at it, okay?
30:37I'm really hoping it's not an embroidery or like upholstery challenge this time because it's not our drag suit, but
30:44only time will tell.
30:54Oh, wow.
30:56What is this?
30:57Ooh.
30:57What's that?
31:03What have we got here?
31:05Ooh, what's that?
31:15What's that?
31:18What's that?
31:36That?
31:36Make me shine bright.
31:37When the 90 minutes is up, I'll select my winning pair but unlike the last petite challenge, all of your
31:43creations will form part of your final reading rooms.
31:48so whether you win or lose you want to make sure you're creating something stylish and in keeping
31:53with your room designs I provided you with the lampshade frames and leftover materials
32:00to use for your creations you have 90 minutes starting now
32:10just grab everything wow got some glue need that glue
32:16you took two glues that's shocking behavior anything else we want right now why'd you have a
32:22book you do something with it not yet there I'm not like that one oh that's pretty yeah yeah nice
32:28one have you done this before yeah I did one in my son's room and it was a much bigger
32:34shade and it
32:34was with fabric I haven't done a lampshade before no I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot
32:39saying I've done it before we find this book in the in the collection of materials we've got our
32:46tower wall which is covered in yeah and old paper so we think if we can maybe incorporate this into
32:52the design maybe on the inside as a it's just as a little kind of noticeable part on the lamp
32:59when you
33:00look a little closer so we want to design do you really like the that green yeah one day it's
33:06quite
33:06complimentary greens to our mint green isn't it yeah and I really like the fuzzles on there and I get
33:11you to move half a table what you thinking I spotted this and when I unfolded it I saw the
33:21lovely lovely
33:22pattern mainly the yellow right because in our room we have our blue walls but we're framing it with
33:29the yellow on the inside we're going to try and paste in some newspapers to tie in our tower with
33:35that turn it well yeah curved wall yeah thinking about the design of your room constantly yeah and
33:41actually when you just take that section there he becomes quite geometric yeah net yeah we're going to
33:47use this other pattern here to create another lampshade then inside we're going to incorporate
33:54the pages from the book as well so really thinking about bringing things together on this one I got
33:59like to say okay thank you right we need to crack on so we're sticking on it's like a plastic
34:05coated
34:06sheet which forms the structure of the lampshade gives you something to work against yeah do you like
34:12any of the fabrics enough no not really do you not like this purple one no just looks like a
34:18duvet
34:21this looks like a crucial moment how's it going it's going quite good I think tell me about your
34:26design so obviously our room is quite green so we found this quite darker material which we thought
34:34would look quite nice we haven't quite decided what we want to do for the second lamp yet you've only
34:40got
34:4090 minutes how are you going to create your schedule I reckon we concentrate on getting
34:45the fabrics on the piece of paper and then we've got a load of time then just to make the
34:50final
34:51bits really pop it's great thank you we need to make a decision gray or this I think if they've
34:59both got the lovely pink flowers yeah go with the pink then my mum was good at this kind of
35:04stuff she
35:05was a primary school teacher and always helping helping the kids with hearts and crafts so yeah
35:12I just hope I have some of the patients that she had with them at the time none of them
35:19are great
35:19but um so the pink you two aren't smiling for the first time ever we know what's going on oh
35:25we're
35:26a bit disappointed with the fabric choice but we're trying to make it work are both shades
35:30going to be the same no we're going to go gray now we're going to do one gray and luckily
35:35we've got
35:36enough of this really pretty trim which will tie them together right i'm sure you've got this
35:41on the smile thank you the pairs are halfway through their 90 minute petite challenge creating
35:57bespoke lampshades for their reading rooms so far so good it was a bit of a struggle putting on the
36:03backing of the shade i didn't realize i thought that was the edge but we still have this bit here
36:08to work
36:08with so all good turn your edges in stuart so do we just peel off this bit here no you
36:14have to
36:14crack it first all the way down all the way down there's a line that's it do it the other
36:19way this
36:20way look do it like that see it all right okay it's perfect okay oh there's a poem in there
36:25that'll do
36:25look what is this equal mob it wait wait the tape's gone missing from here did you take it out
36:33we
36:34need double-sided sticky no there should be one for each is there any more under here let's get our
36:41tools together it's probably got blown away it's got blown away there it's there right okay did you see
36:57i'm hoping to create something which is quite stand out as always not just use the basic materials
37:04right should i commit to this yeah go on then it's something different in it the last petite challenge
37:12there was too much planning and not getting and not enough doing so this time i'm doing as i'm thinking
37:18and i may have to tweak the design along the way but the ultimate goal is to have a complete
37:23ship
37:24lampshade and luckily because the pattern's quite bold even though there's some creases it looks quite
37:30organic i think it's gonna look quite nice isn't it yes i feel like it's fell into place we would
37:37love to win this one so we're doing what we can within the times to really show off a killer
37:43lampshade
37:44we're going to be tucking that under it's not over it's all right okay you're tucking these bits
37:48under that's what i'm saying to you so don't worry okay i understand okay you all right there yeah
37:53fine that was panic
37:56i'm not going to put that much on the outside our surprise is going to be on the inside
38:00and i think i think it'd be daft not to at least try it can you see the light at
38:05the end of the tunnel
38:05you only have 30 minutes left okay i think he's copied our puns yeah i was max the pun master
38:14i wonder how many um little slogans we've come up with time is afoot let's crack on
38:20black black red red blue bits
38:27you're going to start rolling it so you're going to put your tape on to the edges so find this
38:31your
38:31tape and put it on the edges
38:36okay that's what i'm done put that right on the edge like so yeah the bar has to be on
38:40the edge okay
38:41all right it gets more rigid as you move down yeah try and just give it a nudge out to
38:48the outside
38:48that's it
38:52what happened there you took that i was holding it down yeah it shouldn't have wrecked it it's quite
38:57difficult to tuck it under because it's all freeing so it's quite important that we've got a nice finish
39:03because as you've got a reputation to uphold don't switch off yet you've got 15 minutes left
39:09right super glue have you got super glue there yeah
39:15now put it down it's too much it's beautiful right next step you have that the wrong way around
39:26once we get this this shade on we'll have just the tucking in to do which is just hopefully a
39:31polish
39:32part but we want to get as best we can i like this trim shadow gray's pulled it out the
39:38bag for us
39:39if we need any more tape we've got more tape to use you know i'm panicking ever so slightly because
39:44i can't it's double-sided sticky tape i can't get the top layer off good thing we work together well
39:51hang on this isn't going to stick we need more sticky tape on the back line oh that looks so
39:55cute
39:57i've just got to tidy up there on the top yeah right and this other one on yeah so we
40:03put it down
40:04okay right you adjust it to what you need it let's start everything on the right side
40:10right it doesn't look great inside but it doesn't look terrible not to be too shady but you only have
40:15five minutes left five minutes left yep yep yep yep that's it where's that super glue
40:24somewhere under there if you have a look hard enough there there you go i think we might have put
40:30the
40:30trims on the wrong end andrea do you think so yeah it's not a sealant pendant it's a lampshade
40:37for a lamp looks like one of those um what a shame i don't think we'll put them on the
40:45wrong way
40:45that's my understanding of a lamp at least we've both done it wrong yeah we're consistently wrong
40:49it's looking cool though no there's two different colors so i'm going to tuck all this in
40:54just get it nice and neat in there they're not lampshades they have we need to focus time is
41:01getting close to calling i don't know you i like that look i like the look time's up everybody tools
41:07down it's time to see whether you've given your lampshades a glow up i'm really gutted about that
41:15i think my mum would be proud of this
41:20with the lampshades complete it's time to take a closer look happy with the results overall there
41:28was a few hiccups along the way i was putting this on the wrong way right yeah so we nearly
41:34had an
41:35upside down lampshade there was some last minute decisions but i think we managed so so what were the
41:40last minute decisions well we didn't realize about lining the inside until five minutes to go so we
41:48did have to glue a lot of paper into the inside which kind of works with the reverse theme but
41:53if
41:54we had a little bit more time we might have added a copper paint finish into the paper version if
41:58only
41:58you had more time 90 minutes was not enough no right well done thank you thank you
42:07penny and stewart what have you got here this one is out of wallpaper and this one is out of
42:12fabric
42:13and inside we have our leaves of a book to decorate inside there's a little secret
42:21notice it's upside down is that deliberate when you tilt your head down you can actually read it
42:26as you should that sounds like an excuse genius close to being genius excuse now you've clearly
42:36worked with fabric and paper was that deliberate we're doing a room with accents of gold and blue
42:42so we think the materials that we've used will work really well lovely job thank you
42:50andrea and hayley what have you been up to we went for a textile and a tissue paper effect and
42:56we've
42:57reversed them so the exterior of one is the internal of the other um had a slight little mishap towards
43:04the end when the time pressure hit and we added the tassels onto the end if it was going to
43:10be a ceiling
43:11lamp but we actually think it works okay this one's just got a bit of hair so it can be
43:15hung from the
43:16ceiling or if you like it like that you can you can have it like that or you can flip
43:21it the other
43:21way um and have tassels on the top i quite like it with the tassels on the top it's actually
43:26quite
43:27endearing isn't it yeah yeah originally the design must have been that the flowers on the inside of
43:32this one would come to life when you turn the light on you see them shining through unfortunately the
43:37shade isn't shading the bulb no no if it was hanging from a ceiling it would but
43:43it's not we're really trying to focus on doing a neat job that was our intention we were
43:49quite focused on kind of not having bits of frayed fabric and trying to make sure the seams were neat
43:54fantastic well done thank you thank you
43:59it's actually a really tough decision you should all be very proud but there can only be one winner
44:05congratulations
