Are the Baltimore Ravens better off with Trey Hendrickson than they were with Maxx Crosby? News is moving FAST, and Rob Long calls into The Big Bad Morning Show and tells Jeremy Conn & Femi Ayanbadejo why he feels good about the pivot.
Transcript
00:00We've got some breaking news, and then we have some more breaking news as two things have just come across
00:05the wire and happened.
00:06I'm going to bring in Rob Long, and I don't know if you've heard these things yet, Rob, but if
00:10you haven't, you'll get a chance to talk about them with us.
00:12And why don't you leave more, because big things happen, man. It feels like when I go on vacation.
00:17Yeah, the trade-in-chief thing is wild. It almost makes you believe, you know, you're a conspiracy theorist.
00:24By the way, what's up, Femi?
00:25Hey, what's up, Rob?
00:25It kind of makes you feel like maybe you're a conspiracy theorist. We can get an elite pass rusher without
00:30giving up draft picks.
00:31Yeah, well, so the way the report goes is that the Ravens are finalizing a deal with Bengals Pro Bowl
00:36defensive end Trey Hendrickson.
00:38What did you see? Four years, $112 million, deal worth up to $30 million per season.
00:42I guess we're waiting on guaranteed money with that.
00:45And Aditi Kinkabuala, God, I think I nailed that, has reported that Lamar Jackson has reached an agreement on a
00:51restructure, not an extension.
00:53The details aren't out on the numbers and that, but she's reporting it's done.
00:56So, Rob, your thoughts initially on those two things.
00:59I know you're in Sarasota, and we thought we'd be talking baseball with you this week, but we've had some
01:03crazy things happen.
01:04Well, I'll be honest with you, Jeremy. You know how I felt about giving up the two draft picks.
01:09And I wanted Trey Hendrickson for no draft picks.
01:11So, I don't like the way it went, because it looks a little dysfunctional, I guess.
01:16But, ultimately, selfishly, it's what I wanted.
01:20I don't want to give up draft picks for people. I just don't.
01:22Draft picks are too valuable, especially the way the Ravens do it.
01:27And you go out and get a Trey Hendrickson, a guy that comes off the edge and still disrupt things.
01:31You don't give up draft picks. You just got to pay for them.
01:34To me, it's a no-brainer. That's what you take.
01:39I don't know what was going on behind closed doors.
01:41I don't know whether Trey Hendrickson had something to do with what happened yesterday.
01:44Or I don't know whether Trey Hendrickson just fell in your lap because they called you and said,
01:47Hey, we heard you need a pass rusher.
01:49But I think, ultimately, there's a hell-wanted sign of stuff.
01:53But I think, ultimately, the Ravens win.
01:56You know what I mean? They keep the draft picks, and they get what they needed,
01:58and that's a guy that can get to the quarterback.
02:00Yeah, Rob, you know what? I'm going to give the Ravens the benefit of the doubt,
02:03because the truth of the matter is they could have signed Trey to this deal
02:06before they did the whole Max thing.
02:07I think Max is a better all-around football player.
02:09He's obviously younger, and we know this.
02:12People are going to put their tinfoil hats on,
02:13and they're going to come up with whatever they want to.
02:15But I think that trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets,
02:19and I'm sure there's going to be those people that aren't going to have trust
02:22in the Ravens front office in the short term.
02:23But I think you hit the nail on the head.
02:24You've got to be selfish, and you've got to think about your organization
02:27and the fiduciary responsibility you have to the capital and utility
02:31that you're supposed to bring to the organization.
02:33So my opinion, long term, I think it's going to be a nothing burger.
02:36Nobody remembers what happened two days ago.
02:39Do you think long term is going to be an issue for Eric in the front office?
02:42No, not at all.
02:43Not at all.
02:44All you need is productivity.
02:45People want productivity.
02:46That's all they want.
02:46Win.
02:47Win, and they will applaud you for doing what they'll wink and say,
02:51I see you, you sucker.
02:52But then they'll applaud you.
02:54That's just how it is.
02:55I mean, I get it.
02:56The world that we live in doing what we do, we get the fans.
02:59We get the biggest fans because they're sitting listening for four hours.
03:03I get it.
03:04I'm not upset with anybody who calls in and says they don't like it.
03:08I'll listen to you.
03:09But in my opinion, I didn't want to give up two first-round draft picks for anyone.
03:14Anyone.
03:14I don't care who you are.
03:16I don't want to give up two first-round draft picks for you.
03:18So to get those draft picks back and get a guy who I believe is still an elite pass rusher,
03:23I'm good today.
03:24I feel better now than I did when I heard the trade had been redone.
03:32We weren't going to do it because of the physical.
03:33I'm like, okay, man, we still need the pass rusher.
03:35So now here we stand at 9.07, I'm good.
03:39Rob, anything Orioles-related that you wanted to – I mean, yesterday we were talking about some stuff.
03:43You were on top of some of the guys that have impressed you.
03:46Kobe Mayo, you had mentioned his name, and then he went four for four yesterday.
03:50I know we –
03:51I do pause.
03:52Yeah.
03:52Don't be saying I'm on top of no guys.
03:54Don't be doing that, all right?
03:55Pause on that.
03:57All right, second of all, I got some news for you, Jeremy, that you're going to like.
04:01You're on top of guys?
04:02I spoke with Andrew Kittredge today.
04:06Yeah.
04:06Number one, he said when he heard the news that he was coming back to Baltimore, he was pumped.
04:11Which I found like, wow, you wanted to come back.
04:13Y'all had to lose a season last year.
04:15But he said he was pumped.
04:16That's number one.
04:17Number two, I forgot.
04:18He played with Helsley and St. Louis and couldn't wait for that.
04:23And he also played with Boz in Tampa.
04:26He says Boz is going to be really good.
04:29He's just scratched the surface.
04:30He said, wait and see what Boz becomes.
04:33That's a steal of a move.
04:34Wow.
04:35Wow.
04:35Again, I love seeing this and it's all this excitement.
04:38By the way, we get about three minutes of Oriole talking today with everything that's going on.
04:43Anything else standing out to you?
04:44I know the WBC, the U.S. losing and Mark DeRosa thinking that they'd already clinched.
04:49I mean, how dumb can you be?
04:52Yeah.
04:54Yeah, pretty dumb.
04:56I don't get it.
04:58Well, Rob, they need – so now Joe has given us the breakdown.
05:02The American team, Team USA needs Mexico to win tonight and it has to be – what is it?
05:08Oh, they get in.
05:09If Italy wins, they're in.
05:11Okay, sorry.
05:11If Mexico beats Italy by more than five runs, they're also in.
05:16But if Mexico only wins by less than three, then the United States is out.
05:20That's crazy to think, man.
05:21That's crazy.
05:23Rob, did you get a chance to watch the USA versus Italy last night?
05:25Yeah, and I was watching it, but then obviously the Max Crosby stuff, I was trying to juggle a bunch
05:28of things all at once.
05:29Did you get to watch it?
05:30I did watch it, and I spoke with some guys in Clubhouse who were questioning the Americans pitching from top
05:39to bottom.
05:39And I think last night, Team Italy exploited it, to be quite honest with you.
05:44Everybody that I know that was watching it and covers it, the biggest question mark was pitching.
05:49You got a guy last night, two outs, 75% swing and miss rate, and you give up a home
05:55run.
05:56That's tough, man.
05:57That's tough.
05:58So the pitching was one of the biggest question marks for Team USA.
06:01You put six runs on the board last night, and you still lose by two.
06:05So it'll be interesting to see how that pitching staff holds up.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Go ahead, Fenn.
06:11Yeah, no, no.
06:11I think my biggest issue was, you know, I grew up in the Bay.
06:14I'm a Logan Webb fan.
06:15So, you know, I thought, obviously, to keep up that first home run, you know, first at bat.
06:18But we flushed that.
06:20Scoble, same thing.
06:21First batter home run, we flushed that, too.
06:22But my biggest issue is if we make it to the quarterfinals or the semifinals or the championship, there's no
06:27Scoble.
06:28There's no Skeens.
06:29Those guys said, hey, we're one and done.
06:31Like, that makes me super concerned.
06:32I mean, Japan, look, look, dude, you're going to need some guys out there that can get on, like, some
06:36aces that can really deliver some stuff.
06:38I just don't – I just wonder what happens even if they make it to the next round.
06:40Now, I'm here for it, but I am concerned.
06:42I think pitching – starting pitching is going to be the biggest issue and them just getting eliminated after the
06:46quarterfinal.
06:48Yeah, it's going to be huge.
06:49Can you imagine being one and done with all the hype?
06:52It's supposed to be Team USA and Dominican Republic.
06:54It was almost a walk-in, and now they don't even make it to the next round.
06:57I think that's going to be huge, honestly.
06:59It's going to be one of those things.
07:00Because it's not as big as the Olympics, but to me it's kind of like, you know, when Team USA
07:05basketball didn't follow through in bronze medal.
07:09It's almost akin to that in terms of this platform.
07:13Again, not as big as the Olympics by no stretch of the imagination.
07:16But if they don't get to the next round, there will be a lot of questions to answer going to
07:22the next World Baseball Classic,
07:23especially with your manager not understanding the situation before he goes into a game.
07:27And, Rob, before I let you run, just to reiterate, going back to the Max Crosby deal falling through,
07:33the Ravens have signed Trey Hendrickson to a four-year deal.
07:35Lamar has restructured, not extended his contract.
07:39Ultimately, in your opinion, you think this is better than having Max Crosby?
07:43It's a better deal. It's a better move. You don't give up two draft picks.
07:46I'm not comparing Crosby to Trey Hendrickson.
07:49But what you're getting, you're getting an elite pass rusher.
07:51Is the other guy more elite? Okay, you can argue that.
07:54But you're still getting an elite pass rusher, and you give up nothing but money.
07:58You got to pay him anyway.
08:00You get your draft picks back.
08:02You know, I'm telling you, for those of you who have ticked off,
08:04don't let pick number 14 this year become an all-pro.
08:07Then what are you going to say?
08:09I'm glad that they got the draft picks because when DeCosta and the scouting department
08:14gets together in their kitchen and start cooking,
08:17then normally we come up with good pieces.
08:19So, you know, let them cook, and you got a pass rusher.
08:21And, Rob, I can understand what they're going through.
08:23I was offered either to have Femi for two days and Maleski for two days
08:27and have Rob call in for one segment.
08:29And I said, I like that better than having Rob five days.
08:32I'm sure you do.
08:33Can I throw one more thing in with Trey Hendrickson?
08:36Yeah.
08:36You took him from a division rival.
08:38Yeah, exactly.
08:39Good stuff, man.
08:40You just made Cincinnati worse.
08:42Yeah, absolutely.
08:43Rob, amen.
08:44Appreciate it.
08:44We're going to talk to you tomorrow.
08:45You're back on Friday.
08:47We'll see if anything else is breaking.
08:48I mean, you left and everything went to hell, man.
08:53And so, appreciate it as always.
08:55We'll talk to you tomorrow.
08:56All right, buddy.
08:56All right, man.
