00:17us there's gonna be snow yes this weekend and next week we don't need to talk about that let's talk
00:22about our hockey team because deadlines passed red wings went out and made a move added justin
00:26folk on the blue line joining us to talk about that and more it's the general manager steve
00:30eiserman steve good morning morning gentlemen how are you guys good let's start with folk why was
00:36this the right player and why was this the right time to trade a first round pick plus to to
00:40do that
00:45um uh you know we we speaking with our coaching staff on what they felt uh we needed where our
00:54priorities uh as far as improving the team were and their feeling was although pretty darn happy with
01:02uh with our d core we were you know asking a lot you know for axel sending pellica to play
01:08in that top
01:09four spot um uh for in his first year asking a lot and uh felt like if we could bring
01:16in some
01:16reinforcement for that position so uh justin fault kind of fits that a right hand shot he's a veteran
01:22been in the league a long time a role prior to that in carolina so um you know uh we
01:33felt he was
01:34the best fit actually for of the players available giving up a first round pick is uh is hard at
01:41any
01:41time um you know we still are uh you know if you look at the colorados and uh tampas the
01:49teams at the
01:50top top of the standings that are you know going for it and in perennial are giving up all their
01:56prospects and picks at a shot at the cup um they're doing that we're not you know at that stage
02:02although again in the playoffs anything can happen but the reality is if you want to get
02:08really jeez yeah i want to say a top four d or a top nine forward even even fourth line
02:14players went
02:14for first round picks uh at the deadline and have in the past so if you want to get a
02:19player you you
02:20know it costs a lot and we felt uh at this time chris draper and the amateur staff have done
02:25a good
02:26job very good job we've got a lot of prospects in our system that will join the team in a
02:31year or two
02:31that we could afford at this stage um to uh to put our first pick in place you mentioned on
02:41friday that
02:41you were calling about d-man and also forwards did it come down to price or did you feel like
02:47the
02:47blue line was the bigger need yeah well the yeah the blue line was the bigger need had we
02:54had we not done that we potentially would have looked at doing something on the uh on the front
02:59and maybe maybe bigger than just you know bigger as far as involving uh more assets uh but we're
03:05happy to uh we think we got good value in acquiring david perron for our fourth round tick
03:15and shortly um but ultimately there really there weren't a lot of like high-end forwards available
03:23in the cost for them it was another first round tick another prospect and uh and potentially another
03:29draft pick uh so we felt like we do just keep wheeling out all of our prospects and all of
03:37our
03:37first round picks at this stage so we identified the d-man we also did like about having was just
03:44and he has another year on his contract so this just wasn't an outright rental um and uh you know
03:50we'll see how the year plays out and between now and the end of next season um we can you
03:56know decide
03:56if uh we'd like to re-sign justin and keep him in the organization uh you may have answered this
04:02you
04:02dropped out for just a second but in acquiring perron looking at the medicals talking to him
04:07when do you anticipate that he'll be ready i think uh conservatively um he should we then this is
04:14conservative could be sooner but we expect them to to be back next uh thursday i think it is against
04:20montreal that's great news play choose yeah tuesday at home against calgary that might be pushing it a
04:28little bit uh but we expect them to be cleared um he's in the he's in the later stages of
04:35the rehab
04:35he's he's uh you know his uh procedure is healed it's just getting him up to the uh you know
04:42the
04:42the standards i guess or um uh the baselines for his strength and uh flexibility things like that
04:50to prevent any any type of further injury i guess so yeah so to answer your question we think
04:57pretty conservatively uh the canadians game potentially potentially the flames game up
05:05before the olympic break we talked to ty mcclellan and he had mentioned at that time
05:09that he felt like you guys had done enough to be able to add at the deadline dylan lark had
05:15made
05:15comments after last season about the momentum and guys being down do when you hear things like that
05:22does that weigh into your thought process at all giving you a a little bit of motivation to make
05:28a move at the deadline um yeah i think i mean it it it it weighs in a little bit
05:37it has to you can't be
05:38like a you know completely uh tone deaf to the people around you um and and what what it came
05:49down
05:49to really is at this you know if we're at the deadline we're sitting there as one of the teams
05:54in a playoff spot in a good so not come we're right in the mix there within our division within
06:00the conference and and at that point it's it's like okay uh we do have a need can we fill
06:08that
06:09need we felt we could fill that need are we prepared to give up uh the assets to do it
06:13um and
06:14obviously we decided that it was worth it this year this isn't something we can do every year
06:20um i don't think every no team can do it every year but we'll we'll deal with it moving forward
06:25to see where we are at and where our needs were but you know again our team has played pretty
06:30well
06:31all year they've played pretty well the young guys have stepped up our veterans have been excellent
06:35so we just felt like you know here we are let's add and in particular add at least one play
06:42and one of the players i mean justin's under contract for next year that it isn't purely a
06:46rental and it'll help us move in not only this year but next year as well talking to steve eiserman
06:51red wings general manager you've referenced playoffs you guys are in the playoffs right now what's your
06:57confidence level that this team can do which you haven't the last couple years and finish the job
07:01and have playoff hockey back at little caesars for the first time at little caesars arena but back in
07:05detroit well um you know i just i think we're a deeper team i think you know like cam talbot's
07:14done a really good job all year you know cam uh or cam uh john gibson excuse me cam is
07:21my uh son-in-law
07:23john is uh uh he's played really well and kind of taken over that starting role and and and been
07:30a
07:30real difference maker i say our blue line has been been really good with uh and with the addition of
07:36justin falk i think it improves us you know losing dylan here temporarily uh is is it it makes the
07:44challenge a little bit harder but i just think we're a deeper team um and not not as reliant you
07:50know uh as as winning games on the power play as reliant uh um just winning um you know maybe
07:57with
07:57with one line scoring uh i think we're a little bit more balanced i think we're a little deeper
08:03and our goal tending is is better and having said that there's not we're not a lot to get in
08:08by any
08:09means i don't know i mean there's a lot of metrics there's a lot of stats that you guys are
08:13going to look at and as fans without having all the information that you do one of the things that
08:18we look at is gold differential is it sustainable throughout the rest of the year and you look at
08:24some of the other teams buffalo is a plus 32 tampa's a plus 51 you guys are a minus one
08:30is there
08:30any concern that water will find its level and that's going to be something that affects you down
08:36the run uh yeah that's a stat that we look at too it's not it's not one it doesn't take
08:43a rocket
08:44scientist or a uh uh you know all the analytics and the data engineers and whatnot to point that one
08:51out
08:51it is a simple uh obvious stat out there and and teams do make the playoffs around even around minus
08:59you know in in the low minuses it does happen but it is a concern and for us you know
09:04we've had
09:05stretches here we've come back from road trips and we're in that plus four five six and we're
09:11trending in the right direction um and you know even just the last homestand we had just the two game
09:17homestand where where uh we ended up uh losing both games you know simply uh puts us back in the
09:26minus so yeah there's you know it's not a hard and fast but that is an indicator the teams that
09:31are in
09:31the plus are are they're they're simply more successful and it's uh a more five on five but
09:38we're we're here we're at uh in a playoff spot we just kind of keep grinding and uh each game
09:45uh try to
09:46get points out of it and if you win you win more games you're going to be in the plus
09:51it's as simple
09:52as that so but that is a that is a very relevant stat could you give us an update on
09:56larkin as best
09:57you guys know i know it's what day to day see he's on the road trip but uh just for
10:02the fans where is
10:02he at in in terms of his injury and recovery time yeah it's a little bit of a moving target
10:08um
10:08still like uh uh kind of get getting a feel for how he feels from you know day one of
10:16the injury
10:16day two uh day three um and so you know he won't play uh he won't play tonight i've kind
10:24of and my
10:24you know the way we've done thing is uh you know todd obviously speaks with the media daily and gives
10:31injury updates daily i think here at some point here in the next few days we'll have a more clear
10:38picture of a of a potential return date for him and and be able to uh give everyone you know
10:45a better
10:45idea of exactly how long we anticipate him being out and i think that's a better that's fair more
10:51fair for dylan more fair for todd and all of our fan base that's wondering hey what's going on so
10:56it's just been a bit of a moving target till we uh able you know the doctors can get a
11:02feel for
11:03where he's at how he feels and and get a better idea for how long he's going to be out

11:09question i guess a curiosity we get calls and we talk to fans the quinn hughes stuff we only know

11:15was reported were you guys in on him how close was a potential deal with with quinn hughes
11:23um well uh quinn is um as you know is a member of the minnesota wild so i really can't
11:30comment
11:30uh on players and other teams all i would tell you is um you know when we talk around the
11:40league
11:41with every team and when there is a potential fit or a potential need we reach out to all the
11:48teams so
11:49uh obviously we were very aware that he was available um and he's a great player um yeah so
11:57so that's all right i got you every team in the league had interest in quinn hughes like
12:02some were better fits than others some had the assets uh so some were in there how close we were
12:08i don't really know you know vancouver knows how close any team was because uh they know what their
12:14options were and john this you were the gm of team canada in 2010 for the crosby
12:19golden goal uh how did it feel watching this olympics this time around and the the fact that
12:24team usa has made some pretty significant strides uh watching it as a noted canadian hockey royalty
12:29member uh how did you take in that gold medal game well i thought it was an incredible hockey game
12:35i thought the whole tournament was amazing um i really really enjoyed watching it um uh it was great
12:44great for our league and great for the sport and the women's tournament as well um was excellent
12:49um you know it's uh usa hockey i i had my first experience playing uh internationally for canada
12:58at the at the profession of the senior level in 1984 and to see you know today the the u
13:05.s team
13:06in the world championships if i if i remember correctly last last spring olympic gold medal now
13:12you look around the league at top top players in the league in the u.s like the game uh
13:18in in the
13:18united states has grown so much to be dominant um how did i i watch with mixed emotions honestly you
13:25know when sweden played i was cheering for lucas when the u.s was playing i was cheering for dylan
13:30i'm
13:31happy that he won canada lost i got a lot of friends in in hockey canada and on that staff
13:38coaching and management so a little bit mixed emotions but i won i really really enjoyed it and
13:44it was great for great for our sport and really great for our league in my opinion does it bug

13:49as a canadian like this is your game and the u.s comes in and takes gold well i'm actually
13:54i'm an
13:54american citizen now so i couldn't lose you know so i claim american citizenship today and
13:59canada wins in uh in 20 or whatever in 2030 or whatever the next one is i'm gonna pull out
