A few Licensing Officers got more than they bargained for when they stopped a maxi taxi driver on the Southern Main Road in Curepe on Monday morning.

The engagement between the parties escalated quickly into an altercation that had the officers fleeing for safety.

Our reporter Alicia Boucher captured part of the heated exchange and files this Exclusive Report.

00:11What you're unable to see from this video are the moments leading up to this point
00:16where licensing officers told maxi-taxi driver Randal Bowen to pull aside
00:21as he had stopped in the roadway to pick up a passenger.
00:24Bowen did not fully pull off the roadway as told by the officers
00:28who then ordered him out of the vehicle.
00:30He refused and was grabbed by an officer.
00:33From there, a physical scuffle between the two ensued.
00:36Our camera captured from the moment passengers were asked by the licensing officers to exit the vehicle.
01:06A passenger tried to quell the situation as Bowen vented his frustration.
01:17He continued to ask the officers to return his property.
01:21And if you are not going to need someone, then phone and there is a thought stop

02:20tv6 news contacted transport commissioner clive clock concerning the incident which he confirms
02:26there was an incident that took place today involving a maxi driver and a couple a couple
02:32officers i also understand that the incident resulted in a fracker that would have resulted
02:39for um into physical altercation between both the the um the driver and one of the one of the officers
02:46i am yet to get details on it however i must say the matter is currently receiving the attention of
02:54the currently um police officers and um further to that i know the person would have made their way
03:01that the driver to the currently licensing office from clark's understanding the driver wanted to
03:07meet with him but that falls outside of licensing office protocols at the time of our interview
03:13clark was yet to receive a written report hopefully i should get out by this evening or any morning what
03:19i do know one of them he is speaking medical um attention in keeping the standard of prison procedure
03:27and also two or three of them are also providing statement um at the police station licensing officers
03:34do have limited powers of arrest one of which is for the offense of driving without ever having been
03:40issued a license clark tells us while there are situations which may cause them to become physical
03:46in their interactions with members of the public it is usually as a means of self-protection but it's
03:53not it's not our practice i must say in what in what we do um to manhandle anyone in any
03:59type of
04:00situations like that it's not it's not um part of our monitor operandi as officers the transport commissioner
