00:00I think if the Cowboys let him sit at this 18, 19 million dollar cap hit and don't restructure that
00:06and have all that count against your team, then that would be a massive disappointment.
00:10But I think the Cowboys, what they're showing you here is they're willing to overpay a little bit.
00:15They're willing to overdo it a little bit, whether that's giving up a fourth round pick for a guy that's
00:20about to be released or giving 20 million dollars to a pass rusher that might be over the hill and
00:25doesn't have many moves other than power and setting the edge.
00:27And Pete told us he wasn't that great at setting the edge last year.
00:30So why would they be willing to do that?
00:31Because they're going to stop at nothing.
00:33And you would like everything to fall into place for you as a team builder.
00:37Hey, we're on the clock here in the draft.
00:41There's the chime and the perfect defensive player here is for us.
00:44And here they are in free agency and they don't want more than market value.
00:48Wow, things are working great for you.
00:49But if you can't, if you can't snap your fingers and manifest those things, then you've got to be willing
00:54to overpay.
00:55And the Cowboys are doing it.
00:57The Cowboys are drawing a line in the sand and saying, we're going to be much better in 2026.
01:00If we've got to overpay a little bit to do it, that's fine.
01:03Well, they're doing it.
01:03Go ahead.
01:04We've got news.
01:05With the safety, they've got $12 million a year, $3 or $36 million for Jalen Thompson of the Arizona Cardinals.
01:12Jane Slater was on that.
01:13Ian Rappaport.
01:14Brian, you were talking earlier.
01:16They were in talks with him.
01:17Yeah, that was.
01:19This morning when I got up, I was thinking, somebody asked me, well, how do you think this is going
01:24to play out today?
01:25Didn't have the Gary thing.
01:27But I knew that they were going to try and get Thompson done first.
01:31And so they're like, well, I put them in order and they're like, well, why does it have to be
01:34in that order?
01:35Like the fans are getting mad at you for like, I'm telling you what they're doing, but you're getting mad
01:41at me because, well, why does it have to be the safety first?
01:44And I'm like, well, that's who I think they're going to sign first.
01:48And glad to see that they got Jalen Thompson done.
01:51This is a signing.
01:52If you hate the Gary trade and all that, this is a signing at safety you should be really excited
01:58about.
01:59I love it.
01:59It's a lot of things that they need.
02:00And Boye Mafe, as we've been talking about him.
02:02Cincinnati.
02:02He's off the board.
02:03He's getting 30 million a year.
02:05Three years, 60 million.
02:06Congrats to him.
02:07Nice, nice contract for Boye Mafe.
02:09So a lot coming down.
02:10And then Elton Jenkins, who we were just talking with Pete about, just got released from Green Bay.
02:15So a lot of moving parts for the Cowboys.
02:17Three years, 36 million.
02:18They get their safety.
02:19And Jalen Thompson.
02:20And I think we've got O.A. now, another edge rusher off the board.
02:25He's going to go to the Commanders.
02:26Four years, 100 million dollars.
02:28So there's some of the top edge rushers, not named Trey Hendrickson, that are now inking deals.
02:33This is really good.
02:34If you were listening to us last week when we were in Surprise, Brian Broaddus did a film breakdown of
02:40Jalen Thompson.
02:41I'm sure he's going to give us more of that gold.
02:43I will.
02:43Throughout the show, he is 27 and a half years old.
02:48He's just coming off a three-year, $36 million contract.
02:52But here's what a recent report said about him.
02:56In the era of the nickel, having a guy like Thompson, who can play all over the field.
03:00He played 249 in the slot, and the rest of them, it's strong safety and free safety.
03:07Thompson has also played 770-plus defensive snaps in five consecutive seasons.
03:12You can count on him to be out there.
03:14Despite the extra coverage reps, he is plus 50th percent.
03:17Gentile in yards allowed per coverage snap each of the past two seasons.
03:22So a lot of good stuff here on the metrics and analytics of him, Brian.
03:26But from your film study, you kind of supported that idea of this is a guy who's very versatile
03:31and can make it happen in a lot of different environments.
03:33He is.
03:33Listen, and Dallas needs somebody that can play the back end, that can play with some range,
03:37and can actually cover and actually see the field, and actually go up and tackle somebody,
03:42and not just throw your shoulder in there and hope for the best.
03:45This guy is a legitimate weapon back there.
03:48Like I say, you can play him at single high.
03:51You can play him off the hash.
03:52He's going to help.
03:53You can play him as a robber in the middle.
03:56You can play him in the slot.
03:58There's a lot of different ways you could use this guy, and he's a really effective player in that way.
04:03You see him communicate.
04:05You don't see him out of position.
04:08Dallas clearly targeted something that they needed.
04:11And we were talking about this up until the draft.
04:14I mean, as we're going, how many times have we talked about these safeties?
04:18It wouldn't keep me from drafting another one, by the way.
04:21No, not at all.
04:22I'll take two of these guys.
04:24But right here, for the amount of money they spent on this guy, this is really, really a good get.
04:30What do you want to do with Malik Hooker?
04:31Now, they restructured with him this morning.
04:33Sounds like he's in the mix.
04:34I'd like to fire him into the sun.
04:36And I've tried the last three years.
04:39They like him.
04:40They think he's a high IQ player.
04:41They like him, and they do.
04:42And I can't, you know, listen, hey, I apologize.
04:45That's a harsh way of saying things.
04:47But they needed to get better at safety.
04:50And so Malik Hooker, take a seat over here and be inactive every week.
04:56Because this guy right here is your new free safety.
04:58Your best safety is what this guy is.
05:00And I think Malik Hooker is more of a strong safety at this point in his career anyway.
05:04All of his plays now are coming downhill in tackling.
05:06He does not make plays in coverage.
