00:00It's 93.3 WMMR. I'm Sarah, and you know them, you love them. Joining me today are Philadelphia's own Lizzie
00:08Hale and Joe Hottinger of Hailstorm. Hello. Great to see your face again, darling. You as well. And Joe, happy
00:16belita birthday.
00:17Oh, thanks. Appreciate that.
00:19Did you guys get into anything fun earlier in the week?
00:21We, we, so his last birthday, I invited about 20 people and it ended up being 50 at the house.
00:29So we decided this year to just like casually go out to dinner and then last minute, like, hey, if
00:34anybody wants to hang out at this bar, you know, ended up having five people. It was great.
00:39Nice mellow hang. I appreciated it.
00:41That's a good strategy to keep it from getting overwhelming.
00:45I remember cleaning up after the party last year. I was like, oh my God.
00:49The takeaway from that birthday last year, though, was that you are loved.
00:53Yeah, it was cool.
00:54Nobody was like, no, I can't make it. And, and then they brought friends.
00:59Apparently no one's on tour in February.
01:01I was actually thinking about that. I thought, man, Joe probably gets to spend a decent amount of birthdays at
01:06home.
01:07I was supposed to, my birthday's 2-22 and on 2-22-22, I was supposed to be in Barcelona
01:12and it was a Tuesday and I was like, oh, this is going to be great.
01:152-22-22 on a Tuesday.
01:16But that tour got canceled because it got COVID-ed and so I was at the airport instead.
01:21Not as much fun.
01:22Not as much fun.
01:23Airport birthdays.
01:24Yeah, whatever.
01:26I'm sure you guys have had plenty of those too.
01:28Yeah.
01:28So the last time that we saw each other was in Philadelphia for Pierre Robert's tribute concert back in December.
01:37We are so honored to have been asked to be here.
01:41We grew up here.
01:42We cut our teeth here as a band.
01:44And how lucky were we that we had a Pierre Robert in our city.
01:54Philly, can I get an amen?
01:56Amen.
01:57And I wanted to thank you again for being a part of that.
02:00It was such a powerful and beautiful and cathartic night.
02:04So thank you so much for coming to Philadelphia to do that.
02:07I know it meant a lot to Philadelphia and the MMR family.
02:10It meant a lot to us for just to be there and be included and see everybody and celebrate his
02:16life with all of our friends.
02:18Yeah, that was awesome.
02:19So all different walks of our life too.
02:21It's like there were so many people there that we hadn't seen in years.
02:24And so it was lovely.
02:25There just won't be another one like Pierre because he knew the importance of connection, like human connection.
02:36And the importance of community.
02:39He was a supporter of all of us, all of us baby bands trying to make it in Philly, you
02:45know.
02:46Every once in a while, I'll see a song performed live.
02:51And it's a song that I'm already familiar with, but it hits different.
02:55And that happened to me during your set that night.
02:57And I don't know if it was because of the context of celebrating Pierre, our dear friend who had passed,
03:03or if it was the fact that it was like a stripped down set with just the two of you.
03:08But the silence really, really moved me that night.
03:13And this has happened to, I think we all go to a ton of concerts, but every once in a
03:17while for me,
03:18I'll see a song and it just like something clicks about it.
03:22So like I was familiar with that one, but it really moved me quite a bit that night.
03:27So I was wondering if you could speak to that song a little bit.
03:29Oh, thank you so much.
03:31This was a song that came together at like three in the morning.
03:33Um, it was, uh, kind of this progression that every time that we would go into a guitar shop
03:39or anywhere that there was a guitar, Joe would pick up a guitar and kind of play this.
03:43So it was kind of like always rolling around in my head.
03:45And finally I was like, you should just record that.
03:47And then just let, let me tackle it.
03:49And, um, and it ended up coming out as a, a, a love story about the two of us and,
03:56and how we met.
03:58And then, um, and you know, how we ended up kind of just promising, um, each other to each other.
04:04And, uh, you know, we talk about, you know, um, the Philly Knights playing on South street and, and, uh,
04:10you know, so it was, I, I felt like for that night, that was such a, a good song for
04:14the set.
04:15Yeah, it felt, it felt, it felt right.
04:18And, you know, it's, you know, it's, it, and it speaks to like, you know, even after the silence, you
04:24know, you'll, it's just a kind of a, I'll always remember you, you know, and, and, uh, whatever the silence
04:30may be.
04:31Yeah, love, love, love transcends, um, death and, you know, after the pyramids crumble, we'll still be searching for each
04:38other.
04:39I will feel you, I will see you, I will hear you after the silence.
05:04Has there ever been a moment like that for you guys, where you see a song performed live and you're
05:08like, man, this is, I never thought of it that way.
05:10Or, uh, this is just impacting me in a way that I didn't expect.
05:14Oh man.
05:14Remember we saw, we had a day off in Germany and Jason Isbell played and we're just big fans of
05:21him and his songwriting.
05:22And remember like sitting there and we're like, cried like three times.
05:26Yeah, we cried three times that night.
05:28It was just so good, you know, um,
05:29like, wow.
05:31That and what, um, uh, who's, who's the artist, uh, talking about his dad and the jean jacket.
05:38Oh yeah.
05:38Steven Wilson Jr.
05:40Yeah, Steven Wilson Jr.
05:40I saw him on a day off.
05:42That's how we, that's when we get to shows days off.
05:45But, uh, yeah, that, that song with that song about his dad was, it's, it's awesome.
05:50And he's such a great singer and performer.
05:52Yeah.
05:52Good stuff.
05:53Good songwriter.
05:53I feel like it happens more times than not, you know, you, you enjoy an artist and I,
05:59I, I always, you know, you love the albums, but I feel like I, in order for me to truly
06:04understand who you are, I have to see you live, you know, and see that kind of raw human
06:09connection with your own music.
06:11And, and, uh, and there's something about being present in the room with the artist while
06:17they're telling their truth that again, like what you said, it kind of puts those pieces
06:21together, you know, in your head and like, oh, it's just connecting dots that you never
06:25thought of.
06:26Well, at the, uh, at back to the beginning, that last Ozzy show and you and my mom coming
06:31home, I mean, just songs that, you know, hit you, it was just like, oh my God.
06:35And like what Lizzie was saying, being in the stadium with that many people and you look
06:39around, like everybody is crying and you're like, this is, you know, it's awesome.
06:45It's me.
06:45It's like the power of music and the magic and well, how can just like unite a stadium?
06:52You know, you, you, you get to experience in real time, how connected we all truly are
06:59as much as we all think, you know, it's like, we're these individuals that, okay, we have
07:03our own problems, everything and me, me, my mind.
07:06And then you just like, look around and be like, wow, we are all going through the same
07:10emotion right now.
07:11Like when, I don't know if we'll ever really experience anything like that personally,
07:15again, you know, that was at that scale, but that was a, that was an amazing experience
07:20as well.
07:20I wasn't even there in person.
07:21I was watching it from afar and I felt it.
07:23So I can't even imagine how powerful it was to, to be there in that stadium.
07:29Uh, really great stuff.
07:30So March is Women's History Month and March 8th is International Women's Day.
07:38And this, this day and this month come around every year.
07:41And I feel like in the rock genre, hailstorm are automatically, uh, highlighted, spotlit,
07:46whatever you want to call it for pretty obvious reasons.
07:49But it got me to thinking about how you guys, you know, you started this band decades ago
07:54and you started the band as just that, to play music.
07:58Uh, and that was the main agenda.
08:01And then over the years I've heard Lizzie, but really all of you talk about the, how the
08:08responsibility has grown to, and, and maybe it was conscious, maybe it wasn't, you tell
08:15me, but fans now look to you as that beacon of representation in the rock genre, female representation
08:23in the rock format.
08:25And, uh, now you have this responsibility to stand up and always say, yes, women belong here.
08:30And in fact, people of all identities belong in rock and roll.
08:34Um, so I'm sure it's fluctuated over the years, but presently, how does that responsibility
08:40sit with you?
08:41Um, personally, I think it's such a gift.
08:44Um, I remember we were, um, out on tour with, with, uh, Amy Lee and Evanescence and I,
08:50I turned to her and I said, Hey, how does it feel?
08:53Um, because we were, we were, uh, you know, watching the opening band and I'm like, how
08:56does it feel to be one of those women that, that little girls look up to?
09:03And she's like, it's kind of crazy and fantastic.
09:06Cause we started thinking about, you know, the women that introduced us to this genre
09:11and the women that we look to, to say, Oh wow, that's possible to see ourselves reflected.
09:17And so we, we ended up having this whole conversation, um, multiple times on that tour where, is
09:22I think that, um, you know, my responsibility, our responsibility as women working and, and
09:29fighting and existing, you know, in this genre, um, you know, our responsibility is to try to
09:36make it a little bit more possible and a little bit easier for those who came, who are coming
09:41after us.
09:41Um, if you hearken back to our four mothers of rock, which, you know, um, the heart sisters,
09:48Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, et cetera, you know, um, they, I've heard a lot of their
09:55stories about what they had to go through in order to get their record played, in order
10:00to get signed, in order to get people to listen, uh, the press, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
10:05And they had it, you know, a lot harder.
10:08There was a lot more gravity, you know, in that generation, but because they persevered and
10:14they did not give up, it showed women like us, okay, that's possible.
10:19And, and it is, um, it is something that women do.
10:23And that's such, um, it's so monumental, you know, in the decision to keep moving forward.
10:29So for, for me, you know, it's like, and that, you know, there's always going to be, you know,
10:35misogyny and there's always going to be some wall that you're like, I thought we were done
10:39with this, you know, but, um, you know, and we, I don't think any one generation is going
10:44to win the whole war, but little by little, we can win these battles and then make it a
10:49little bit easier for these women who are coming after us to say, okay, this is cool.
10:53And this is possible.
10:54And we're seeing this in real time.
10:57Um, you know, something I think, you know, Joe and I talk about a lot is that it wasn't
11:01that long ago that we were playing, you know, um, in, uh, well, Sonic Temple back in the
11:07day or like any of these festivals and I was the only girl on the bill or the only girl
11:12on stage, the only girl working.
11:14And, um, and that's just not true anymore.
11:16You know, we see, um, all of these women, you know, coming up.
11:20And I think that this next generation coming up is much more defiant and whatever role that
11:28I might've played and my counterparts may have played with making that easier for them.
11:31I mean, that's just an incredible gift.
11:34And it's something that I don't think we ever asked for, you know, like you said before,
11:37like we, I started a band cause I want to be in a band with my, with my buddies.
11:41That's, that's what it is.
11:43And then you realize that the kind of gravity of it and just existing, you know, just existing
11:49and deciding to push through.
11:51And, um, it's a beautiful thing.
11:53I love that.
11:54Um, you talk about just existing and putting that in the context of celebrations like women's
12:01month, women's day, something that I think about when the celebrations come up is the difference
12:06between being seen and celebrated versus being scrutinized and a novelty within our industry.
12:16How do you navigate that?
12:18I've, I've got some thoughts on how I do, but I was wondering how, how you navigate that.
12:21Um, for, for me, it's, it's a, it's a personal vendetta, whereas I, um, I don't, I don't think
12:33so much about the scrutiny because I can scrutinize myself, um, far harder than anybody else can
12:41possibly know me or pick me apart.
12:43So, you know, for me, the idea of existing and celebrating myself is kind of this superpower that
12:53I hold and that I control.
12:55So that's what I kind of like mentally, I keep that in control and, um, and everybody, you know,
13:01and every day you are celebrating, I I'm celebrating every day I'm on stage being a woman in this
13:07genre, because honestly, if there is a genre that is tailor-made for being a female, it
13:13is hard rock and metal.
13:15I mean, we got, we are complicated beings.
13:17We think about these things all the time.
13:20And, uh, and this is our place to put it.
13:23Um, something that I thought was so beautiful at back to the beginning, uh, because I was,
13:28I was the only girl build on that as well.
13:31And I, I looked at at one point in time during our set and there's all these girls, you know,
13:37up on everybody's shoulders and just saying, Hey, I am here and this is my genre.
13:42This is what it is.
13:43And so it's just, um, it's, it's powerful, um, to be a woman in music and to be a woman
13:48in rock.
13:49And, um, I try to keep that as kind of my North star and not worry so hard about being
13:55scrutinized
13:56because, you know, um, that's, that's going to happen.
13:59And no matter what you do in life, there's always going to be somebody that loves what
14:04you do.
14:04There's always gonna be somebody that hates it.
14:06All that really matters is what you think about yourself.
14:08So, um, for example, like when we were, when we were first, you know, like shopping to labels
14:13and everything, I can't tell you how many times I heard, well, uh, females in rock, that's
14:19not really a thing right now.
14:21So we don't know what to do with you.
14:22We like what you do.
14:23We don't know what to do with you.
14:24And weren't there some who tried to encourage you to just ditch the band altogether?
14:28Oh, absolutely.
14:28They're like, you know what, you'd be so much better as, as a singular artist.
14:31Maybe you should go pop.
14:32You should go country, all of this stuff.
14:34And I kind of took it at my, I, you know, I kind of harnessed my, my reckless teenager
14:39inside of me and I'm like, well, that's ridiculous.
14:41I'm going to do it anyway.
14:43And so you use that as your fuel.
14:45And then that ultimately becomes, you know, something that they can't really take away
14:49from you.
14:50We're speaking with Lizzie and Joe from Hailstorm and Like a Woman Can is the latest single
14:56off of the new album Everest fits right into the theme of Women's History Month.
15:01And the lyrics pose the question, why can't you love me like a woman can?
15:07There's all of these empowerment anthems that are out there that are geared towards women
15:13that pose questions that are geared more towards aggression, I guess.
15:18Like, you know, I can shred.
15:20I can fight, I can kick ass.
15:24And here you are, um, talking about something that is usually painted as more delicate, which
15:30is love.
15:31So the takeaway that I got from this song was that love is not for the weak, uh, or the
15:38whimsical, not all the time.
15:39Anyway, love requires hard work and it requires strength, strength that a woman has.
15:46So I really love listening to that song and vibing with it in that way.
15:50Thank you so much.
15:52You, you kind of hit the nail on the head there too.
15:54It's, you know, and the, you know, as, as spicy as that line is, and I know that might,
16:00you know, it may make a few people uncomfortable with that.
16:04Um, but you know, really you have to, you have to love with your whole being.
16:10And that is something that as women, we are, we are born with that.
16:16And we are also born to, um, to tolerate pain in, not just in a physical sense, but in an
16:24emotional sense, we have to compartmentalize these feelings and we have to find reasons
16:30and ways to love around them.
16:32And, uh, and this, this song is literally, you know, it's, it's asking your male counterparts
16:38to meet you in the middle.
16:40And, um, you know, obviously with some, uh, bisexual panic thrown in because why not?
16:44But, uh, but, but it's, uh, that's why we're going to keep playing this through to pride
16:48month, baby.
16:48Absolutely.
16:49It works both ways.
16:51Um, but yeah, it's, it's a delicate subject and it's, it's, it's something that in the
16:56studio, um, it took, it took a certain amount of bravery to frame it in that way because
17:05there I've become very comfortable with, you know, like you said, I'm the fire and love
17:10bite.
17:10And so do I, and you, I miss the misery.
17:12I can take it.
17:12I can do this.
17:13And this is like the hardest thing that, that we go through in any relationship is having
17:19the hard talks, you know, sitting down and being like, here's a sensitive subject.
17:24Let's work through it together because we're choosing to do that.
17:28And so, you know, a statement like that, you know, you, you can, you throw it out there
17:33be like, Hey guys, everybody cool with this.
17:37But, um, but, uh, yeah.
17:39What was the reaction, Joe?
17:41What did you think of it when that was brought to the table?
17:43Oh, it's, I mean, it's such a good song, you know, like, I don't know, to me, the song
17:48always wins.
17:49And I, and like, to say something like that, like Lizzie was saying, it's definitely going
17:55to make people uncomfortable, which I think is outstanding, you know, like shake it up
18:00a little.
18:00Yeah.
18:00What is that supposed to mean?
18:02You know?
18:02And like, Oh, what's the, Oh, Joe, what's that?
18:04You know, I love getting out.
18:05Like, that's awesome.
18:06I like, you're not even listening.
18:08Have you gotten some hell?
18:10Not much.
18:11Just every once in a while, some friends, some old friends.
18:13Like, Oh, what'd you do?
18:16I know.
18:16Whatever.
18:17It's funny.
18:17But, you know, and that's, that's, that's the beautiful thing about the relationship with
18:22me and my guys is that they have always met me in that middle and they have always been,
18:28you know, allies and, you know, we're, and the truth is, is that, you know, yeah, we, it's
18:34like we walk together hand in hand, but nobody will really know what it's like to walk in
18:39my shoes.
18:40And so to be able to express that, you know, um, with them and then build this incredible
18:46song for, for women.
18:48And, uh, it's, uh, it's wonderful.
18:51Well, I see you have some guitars behind you.
18:54We do.
18:55Do you think we could hear that song now?
18:57Absolutely.
18:58We should do it.
19:00Hold on.
19:00I got to hit buttons.
19:03That's a beautiful guitar.
19:06It's green.
19:07I've noticed, I've noticed from following Joe on Instagram that he is partial to the green
19:11guitars.
19:11I don't know how he tells them apart.
19:13I am not a gearhead, but they all look beautiful.
19:16They're gorgeous.
19:17They're all my little babies.
19:19And I bet they sound great too.
19:21They, most of them.
19:22Yeah.
19:23And I love this version.
19:24This is something we just kind of recently, recently put together.
19:28And, uh, as you said, just kind of stripping it down kind of has, it opens up a couple of
19:33different meanings to the song.
19:52Do you lose sleep like I do?
19:57Do you, barely eat like I do?
20:01Do you wait for my calls?
20:04Do I matter at all to you?
20:10Are you, are you soft to the touch?
20:14do you, are you, are you?
20:16Do you only play rough?
20:19Do you know how to whisper and speak with your fingers?
20:24Ooh, it's not hard to please me
20:32Baby, this should be easy
20:35I'm just a woman and you're just a man
20:40We both have two hands, why can't yours understand
20:44Now to touch me I would've stayed
20:48But you can't love me the way that a woman
20:53Why can't you love me?
20:58Why can't you love me?
21:01Oh, why can't you love me?
21:08Like a woman can
21:16All of my roses are pink
21:21And your violets are blue
21:27Thinking maybe we made a mistake
21:31Mixing the two
21:35Now I'm driving away
21:39You got nothing to say
21:43I want someone who cries, who feels every goodbye like I do
21:50Can't you, can't you?
21:52Oh, it's not hard to please me
21:56Baby, this should be easy
22:00I'm just a woman and you're just a man
22:05We both have two hands, why can't yours understand
22:09And now to touch me I would've stayed
22:12But you can't love me the way that a woman
22:18Why can't you love me?
22:23Why can't you love me?
22:26Why can't you love me?
22:35Oh, why can't you love me?
22:48Oh, it's not hard to please me
22:56Baby, this should be easy
23:00I'm just a woman and you're just a man
23:05We both have two hands, why can't yours understand
23:09And now to touch me I would've stayed
23:12But you can't love me the way that a woman
23:17Why can't you love me, why can't you love me, oh, why can't you love me, like a woman can
23:54It's Lizzy and Joe of Hailstorm off of the new album Everest
23:59I know I mentioned this before when we spoke on the day that the album came out
24:02When you guys were in Philly for the release event
24:06But it's giving James Bond themed
24:10That's awesome
24:12That's awesome
24:13I can't claim that
24:14I saw a comment on Instagram the day the album came out that said that
24:18I was like, yes, that's correct
24:20That's so correct
24:20Yeah
24:21That's awesome
24:22All we need now is a female James Bond
24:24Yeah, right
24:25Movie
24:25Like, let's just flip the script here
24:28Jenny Bond
24:30Jane Bond
24:32Jane Bond, there it is
24:34Also, Lizzy, always super impressed with your breath control
24:37But, like, you just wailed sitting in a chair
24:44I'm, like, sitting down and have a hard time getting the sentences out
24:47That's just, you are hashtag blessed
24:50Thank you so much
24:51I sit real well
24:53No, I appreciate that, you know
24:56It's a combination of a lot of preparation and hoping opportunity meets me
25:04When I need it most
25:06Awesome
25:06And the video for the song
25:08Is very compelling
25:10And very beautiful
25:11And there's a lot of movement
25:13And, like, emotion coming out of the eyes of these women
25:16Who are dancing in front of the camera
25:18You included
25:20Talk about that video a little bit
25:22You know, we had kind of
25:23We'd been
25:24Racking our brains as to how to actually do this song
25:27And make it
25:29Very female-centric
25:31And not
25:33Not in the ways that we have
25:35Kind of normally done those things before
25:37Where it's, like, me leading
25:38And then everybody kind of supporting
25:40I really wanted to showcase
25:41You know, women of all shapes and sizes
25:44And all, you know, all walks of life
25:47And
25:49And
25:50I was kind of inspired by
25:52Kind of the
25:5490s kind of vogue
25:55You know, like
25:56You know, advertisements
25:58Back when we all used to read magazines
26:01And
26:01And just kind of
26:03Use that as
26:04The template
26:05And make it extremely simple
26:06Because something that I didn't want to do
26:08Is, like, we
26:10And I did have a lot of ideas for this
26:12Like, storyline
26:12This and that
26:13I'm like, no, the story is
26:15The woman
26:16And
26:17If you're watching that video
26:18Or listening to the song
26:20This is your story to finish
26:22Not mine
26:23And I, so
26:23It's like
26:24It was important for me
26:25To kind of leave that open-ended
26:26And with just the
26:28The shapes of women
26:30And how it's so beautiful
26:31And the movement of
26:32Of women
26:33And
26:33Especially
26:34You hit that, too
26:36Like, the eyes
26:38Were very important as well
26:40In that video
26:41And
26:41We did that in, like,
26:43One day in between tours
26:45We were in between
26:46We just got back from
26:47Was it from Europe?
26:49Yeah, from back to the beginning
26:50We were just so jet-lagged
26:51I remember, like,
26:52That was the day it hit
26:53And I was just
26:53Luckily, I didn't have to be in it
26:55I don't know how you did it
26:56Yeah, you didn't have to be in it
26:56You were napping the whole time
26:57But
26:58Joe, you took an incredible photo
27:00On that set
27:03I think you referred to it
27:04On Instagram as
27:04The Screamy Knicks
27:06Photo
27:07And that focuses on the eyes, too
27:09With the way Lizzie has some of her
27:11Outfit covering her face
27:12That's
27:13An incredible
27:13Incredible shot
27:15Oh, thank you
27:16Yeah, that was a
27:16That was a
27:18Fun one
27:18And kind of easy to
27:19Photograph Lizzie
27:21Just doing her thing
27:21And the lighting was awesome
27:23And
27:23So I was just kind of
27:25On the other side of the camera
27:26Doing my camera thing
27:27That I like to do
27:28I remember we were trying
27:29All sorts of things
27:30For that particular
27:32You know
27:33Stretch of video
27:34Or it's like
27:35We were trying
27:35Like
27:35I think I ended up
27:37That piece of fabric
27:38Was like an apron
27:39That we had found
27:41In one of the wardrobe cases
27:42We're like
27:43That'll work
27:43You know
27:44Like we need some
27:44Like movement
27:45Not just like hands
27:46But just that
27:47It was
27:47It was fun
27:48It was a
27:48Very creative day
27:50Regardless of
27:51The fact that we were
27:51A little loopy
27:52From the
27:53From the jet lag
27:54Maybe that's what
27:54Brings the creativity out
27:56I think so, too
27:57Less sleep
27:57Less sleep
27:58Less thinking about it
27:59Just do
28:00And
28:00And
28:01React
28:01Right
28:02Just effing do it
28:03So that song
28:05Is from the album
28:06Everest
28:06And it's been out
28:07What?
28:08Seven months now?
28:10Yes
28:11Yeah, sounds about right
28:12Something like that
28:13August 8th
28:13So you've had
28:14Some time to sit with it
28:15The fans have had
28:16Some time to sit with it
28:18What's the reaction
28:19Been like
28:20Over these past few months?
28:21Because you've also been
28:21Touring behind it
28:22Pretty hard
28:23It's amazing
28:24How many different people
28:26Have so many different songs
28:28That are their favorites
28:29It's become kind of
28:31Crazy in the set
28:32Because we'll
28:33Try to change up
28:34Our set every night
28:35Just to keep it
28:35Kind of fresh
28:36And so
28:36Then we'll get into
28:37A meet and greet
28:38And it's like
28:39Oh, are you playing this one?
28:40Are you playing that?
28:40Well, what about that one?
28:41Like, okay, well, I guess
28:41We've got to work that one up
28:42Tonight
28:43And, you know, seeing these kids
28:45With like
28:45Just the tattoos
28:47On themselves, too
28:48It's like
28:48I feel like
28:50This album
28:51Hit a lot of
28:52A lot of our
28:53Hardcore fans
28:54In a
28:55In a deeper way
28:57Than I think that
28:57Our previous records have
28:59And this
29:00This record is like
29:01I think it's like
29:02A pretty
29:03Awesome and big growth
29:05For us
29:05Just pushing some boundaries
29:08Especially in like
29:09You know, the active rock genre
29:10And hard rock
29:11And some
29:12Metal riffing in there
29:13And
29:14For me, like
29:15As we were putting
29:17We made the record over two years
29:18And little blips of time
29:20And
29:21And, you know
29:22Hearing it back now
29:23Like
29:24Like
29:25It's always revealing
29:26More
29:26You know, I think it's like
29:28I think it's a grower
29:29You know, like
29:30Something that
29:30Like as time goes on
29:32You're like
29:32Oh, man
29:32Like something you can go back to
29:34And get more from
29:35Instead of just like
29:36A one listen
29:37Like
29:37Oh, that's cool
29:38All right
29:38Anyway
29:39I get it
29:39You know
29:40Yeah
29:40So, I don't know
29:41It's cool
29:42And
29:42And we're getting that
29:43Sort of reaction from Vanna
29:44Like
29:44Oh, man
29:45Like
29:45I'm still like
29:46Digging into this
29:47And we're like
29:47Cool
29:47Good
29:48You're supposed to
29:48Yeah
29:49They're like dissecting it
29:50Like
29:50Well, that part
29:51And that time signature changed
29:52Like
29:53Did you do that with a click?
29:53I'm like
29:54Actually, that song
29:54No
29:54We forgot to put the click on
29:56For that
29:57And we kept it
29:57But
29:58Yeah
29:59It's wonderful
30:00To see them dig in
30:01And
30:01We're so proud of it
30:02You know
30:03We
30:03We did
30:04We recorded this album
30:06In a completely different way
30:07Than we've ever recorded any album
30:09We were letting kind of
30:09The music tell us what to do
30:11We were getting up every day
30:12And
30:13Writing from scratch
30:14And as we were writing
30:15Recording
30:16While we were writing it
30:17So it's like
30:18Anytime something felt good
30:19Okay
30:20Hit record
30:21That's that part
30:22Okay
30:22Where are we going next
30:23And so
30:24You know
30:25I feel like
30:26We're still discovering things
30:27On this album too
30:28Just
30:29Not just by
30:29Performing it live
30:30But just like
30:31Every time that I hear something
30:33Oh yeah
30:33I forgot to play that live
30:34Oh yeah
30:34There's that part too
30:35Yeah
30:36It's that dynamic
30:38Well does that make it
30:40Maybe not difficult
30:41But like
30:41Interesting
30:42To translate these songs
30:44To stage
30:46Yeah
30:46Oh yeah
30:47Yeah
30:47Absolutely
30:47I mean
30:48One was just
30:49When we did
30:50Like go through the rehearsals
30:52To get ready for
30:52Last year's
30:54Forever tour
30:57Like a lot of the parts
30:58We recorded
30:59As we were writing them
31:00So it's like
31:00We played them once
31:01Yeah
31:01And then moved on
31:02With life
31:03And
31:03A lot of the one takes
31:04We're like
31:04Wait
31:05What did I play
31:05What was that part
31:07Was I playing
31:07And to like
31:09Go into the session
31:10And find the track
31:11And we're like
31:11Oh
31:12That was it
31:12Okay
31:13Weird
31:13Why would I play that
31:14Alright
31:14Let's try it
31:15And you know
31:16And like
31:16If there's three or four
31:18Guitar parts going
31:18It's like picking
31:19Which ones are gonna
31:21Which two can we do
31:22That will translate best
31:23Live
31:25We're not
31:25We're still
31:28Just you know
31:28Basement rock band
31:30You know
31:30Like four of us
31:31Making as much noise
31:32As possible
31:32We don't like computers
31:33Or click tracks on stage
31:35Yeah no tracks
31:35No miming
31:36So it's like
31:37Okay here we go
31:37Every show is an interpretation
31:38Of our music
31:40Again
31:40Keeping it dynamic
31:41That's what keeps it
31:42Fun and interesting right
31:44Oh yeah
31:44It makes it spicy on stage
31:45Because anything could happen
31:47Spicy
31:48Love that
31:49Wanted to ask about
31:50One other song
31:51On the record
31:51Which is
31:52Rain Your Blood on Me
31:53And
31:54Hell yeah
31:55Lizzy I think you
31:56Refer to that
31:57As another
32:00Like this one's
32:01For the women
32:02Of rock and metal
32:04Yeah
32:04Rain Your Blood on Me
32:05Was
32:07I feel like
32:08Everything that I've written
32:09With female empowerment
32:11In mind
32:12Up until that point
32:13Came to a head
32:14In this song
32:15Where is
32:16This is like
32:16The war cry
32:17And
32:18I remember
32:19We were
32:20We were up
32:20Like
32:21What
32:21You know
32:22One or two
32:23In the morning
32:23Like stomping
32:24Our feet
32:25And
32:25We had that
32:26One part
32:26Of the
32:26Rain
32:27Your Blood
32:28And
32:28And
32:29The whole
32:30Like
32:31Like
32:31Kind of
32:32Through the night
32:32And then
32:33Into the next
32:34Morning
32:35I was like
32:36Rain Your Blood
32:37On Me
32:37That sounds
32:37Great
32:38What could it
32:38Mean
32:39And then
32:39I'm like
32:39Oh wait a minute
32:41Let's
32:41Let's
32:42Let's
32:42Really
32:43Make this
32:44Female centric
32:45Here
32:45And so
32:45It's
32:46Yeah
32:46It's the battle cry
32:47For
32:48Every woman
32:49That has ever
32:50Had to
32:51Deal
32:51With
32:52I mean
32:53With just
32:54Being a woman
32:55And existing
32:55In this world
32:57And
32:58And it's just
32:59It came out
33:00In kind of
33:00Poetry form
33:01And then
33:02We ended up
33:03Recording it
33:04The next day
33:05Because
33:05Some of our
33:07People from
33:08Our label
33:08Were coming in
33:09To check on
33:09Like see
33:09What we were doing
33:10And I'm like
33:11Oh my gosh
33:11I gotta get this song
33:12Done
33:12So I just
33:13Ended up
33:13Doing it
33:13And I'm pretty sure
33:14It was like
33:14One or two takes
33:15Of a run through
33:16And
33:17Yeah
33:18It's so much fun
33:19To play live too
33:21And just
33:21Because
33:22Every woman
33:23Gets it
33:23You know
33:24And
33:24It's
33:25It's awesome
33:26It's
33:26And all the
33:28Time signature changes
33:29All the turns
33:30And twists
33:31That we do
33:31In that
33:31It's just
33:32It's a great song
33:33One of my favorites
33:34Off the record
33:34We
33:35We were playing it
33:36We started
33:37In May
33:38Last year
33:39The record came out
33:39In August
33:40And we
33:40We played
33:41Rain Your Blood
33:42On that first show out
33:43Because it was
33:44Like made for stadiums
33:45And we
33:46Were doing all these
33:48Stadiums in Europe
33:48With Iron Maiden
33:49And ended at the
33:50Stadium with Sabbath
33:51And like you have to
33:52Play that song
33:53In stadiums
33:54It was like
33:54Built for this
33:55Yeah
33:57Bleep
33:58Don't worry
33:59We'll clean all that up
34:01Don't f***ing worry
34:02About it
34:02Okay
34:03Okie dokie
34:05A few more questions
34:06Before I let you go
34:07I wanted to talk
34:08About Metallica
34:09Because just yesterday
34:11As of this recording
34:12Anyway
34:12They announced
34:13That they will
34:14In fact
34:15Be playing
34:16At the Sphere
34:16In Las Vegas
34:17Yes
34:18Heck yeah
34:18And every time
34:19A new residency
34:20Is announced there
34:21It reinvigorates
34:22The conversation
34:23Of well
34:24Who should play there
34:25Who would
34:26Come up with
34:27Really great imagery
34:29Have either of you been
34:30I can't remember
34:31I feel like we might
34:32Have talked about this
34:32We got the opportunity
34:34To go and see U2
34:35Yeah we saw U2 show
34:36A couple years ago
34:37It was awesome
34:38It's amazing
34:38Like what a cool venue
34:39And it's mind blowing
34:40And just all the
34:42I don't know
34:43I don't know
34:44Who's in charge
34:44Of making content
34:45For a screen like that
34:47It's gotta be
34:47A heck of a process
34:49But it's awesome
34:50I mean it's an experience
34:51Like seeing a band
34:52In a concert
34:53In a way that
34:54You've never seen it
34:55And I mean
34:55We're gonna go to Metallica
34:56Yeah we're trying
34:57We're currently
34:58Trying to figure out
34:58How we can
34:59Pull that off
35:00Because I just feel like
35:02With their creativity
35:03In the past
35:04With production
35:05You know
35:05With you know
35:06The injustice for all
35:07Like falling down
35:08And everything
35:08They've ever done
35:09Every time I've seen them
35:10I feel like this is now
35:12Like anything goes
35:13I don't know
35:14I just
35:14I want to see
35:15What that would look like
35:16Through Metallica's eyes
35:18Yeah
35:18Yeah I'm definitely
35:20Trying to get out there
35:20At some point
35:21In October
35:21To see that
35:23If budget
35:24Was not an option
35:24Because I'm sure
35:25It is an option
35:26When you play
35:26The sphere
35:27But is that
35:28Something that would
35:28Be of interest to you
35:29Because you are so
35:31You know
35:32Obviously musicians
35:33But
35:35Visually
35:35Artistically inclined
35:37As well
35:37I would absolutely
35:38Love to
35:39And just
35:39And because
35:40It's just a bigger
35:42Part of
35:45Of who you are
35:46And every time
35:47That we put together
35:48Production
35:48It's an extension
35:49Of
35:50You know
35:50What we want
35:51The album to look
35:52Or to
35:53Or to
35:53Make everybody feel
35:55Like they're in
35:56Kind of a different place
35:57Or now they're
35:57They're a part of
35:58Our world
35:59You know
36:00Just envelop them
36:00And so
36:01That would be
36:02Such a fun challenge
36:02It's gotta be a trip
36:03Like sitting
36:04I'd be like
36:04Oh
36:06I'd just be watching
36:07You're gonna be
36:07Distracted the whole time
36:09Wow
36:10Oh it's like
36:11It's coming in on us
36:11Wow
36:13The ceiling's collapsing
36:14Oh no
36:14I didn't even think about that
36:16Yeah
36:16Well it's probably like
36:18Yeah
36:18An interesting view
36:19From the stage
36:20Because you've got
36:20Seats in front of you
36:21But it is all encompassing
36:22So you can still see
36:23In the periphery
36:24Wow
36:25Wow
36:25Yeah it'd be a trip
36:26It'd be fun
36:27I mean
36:27It'd be a blast
36:28Yeah
36:29There's only one way
36:30To find out
36:31Another big announcement
36:32That happened yesterday
36:32Was this year's
36:34Crop of nominees
36:35For the
36:36Rock and Roll
36:36Hall of Fame
36:37And I was curious
36:37If you guys
36:38Had heard about that
36:39Seen the list
36:40Had any thoughts
36:40I saw the list
36:41Yeah
36:41You know
36:42I love that
36:43It creates
36:44A similar conversation
36:45Every year
36:45Like oh
36:46What do you mean
36:46New edition
36:47Is on the
36:48Nominee list
36:49It's not rock and roll
36:50But like
36:50You know
36:51Rock and roll
36:52Where did it come from
36:54And how did we get there
36:56And I think it's
36:57I think it's alright
36:58To bring in
37:00Everybody
37:00And like
37:01You know
37:02And I feel like
37:04I feel like
37:04What is rock and roll
37:05Is your interpretation
37:07Of the rock and roll
37:09That you grew up
37:09Listening to
37:10So you know
37:11Everybody has their
37:12Different lane
37:13And something that
37:14They
37:15You take from someone
37:16You're inspired by somebody
37:18And then
37:18You find yourself
37:20Through it
37:21And it all came from
37:22The blues
37:22It's true
37:23You know
37:24Like into
37:25R&B
37:26And
37:27Soul
37:27And Motown
37:28And it all
37:29They're all
37:30You know
37:31We're all dancing
37:32To the same beat here
37:33You know
37:34It's cool
37:35Yeah
37:35I think it's cool
37:36Like
37:36And it's good to see
37:37Who was I pumped to see in there
37:39It was cool to see Oasis on there
37:40Yeah
37:41Yeah
37:41Of course
37:41You know
37:42You can't
37:43They're
37:44They're the kings
37:44Of the 90s
37:46Brit rock
37:47Without a doubt
37:48I'm curious if they will
37:50Actually get inducted
37:51Because
37:51I think it was Liam
37:53One of them
37:54Maybe both of the brothers
37:56Went on a tear
37:57Probably more than once
37:58Against the rock hall
38:00And the rock hall
38:00Likes people who are gonna
38:01Like show up to the ceremony
38:03But
38:04Those dudes get the best
38:05Kind of up to the fans
38:05And the voting body
38:06So
38:06I guess we'll see
38:07We'll see
38:08I was
38:09I was curious about that too
38:10But like
38:11Considering the dynamic
38:12Between the two of them
38:14They give the best interviews
38:15They're hilarious
38:16How is that gonna turn out
38:18Well they got through
38:19That tour last year
38:20I know
38:20Which is awesome
38:21There were bets on
38:22When the tour was gonna drop off
38:24And the rest of it
38:24Would get cancelled
38:25And they made it through
38:26Yeah
38:27They're fine
38:28Maybe out of spite
38:29To prove us all wrong
38:30But they made it through
38:31There were
38:31There literally were
38:33Which is insane
38:35Man
38:35We almost got to one of those shows
38:37I know
38:37I know
38:38It's alright
38:38They'll be around more
38:40You know
38:41They're not gonna just stop
38:42Alright
38:42So what's on the agenda
38:44For the rest of 2026
38:45I see that you're sitting
38:46In a studio
38:47That I believe
38:48Is your home studio
38:49Yes
38:50Which allows for
38:51Writing whenever
38:52The mood strikes
38:53Yes
38:53And recording whenever
38:55And yeah
38:56We can do that here
38:56But we have a lot of
38:57We just put up a schedule
38:59On the internet
39:00And we got a
39:01We have a lot of shows
39:02You know
39:03There's some Pennsylvania shows
39:04Coming up
39:05And we have a tour
39:06We're gonna announce here
39:08Sooner
39:08And then later
39:09I hope
39:09I don't know when
39:10We're going to South America
39:10At the end of the month
39:11End of next month
39:12Yeah
39:13It's not March yet
39:14It's not March yet
39:14No no no
39:15End of next month
39:15But you know
39:16There's all kinds of fun things
39:18Lizzie's singing with
39:18Paul Rogers and Geezer Butler
39:20And Matt Sorum
39:21And all them this weekend
39:23Which is gonna be amazing
39:25That's gonna be fun
39:26And yeah
39:27We're going over to England
39:28We're gonna do some
39:29Acoustic shows over there
39:30And download festival
39:31And festivals here in America
39:33And then tour in the fall
39:35Yep
39:35We'll be around
39:37We got a lot of plans
39:38Is Philadelphia in your plans?
39:41I don't remember the writing
39:43Honestly
39:45Just say yes
39:46And then we'll manifest
39:47We'll manifest
39:47I feel like
39:48I feel like
39:49One will be thrown in there
39:51Yes
39:51It's gotta be
39:52Right?
39:52It's gotta be
39:53Has to
39:54I hope so
39:54It's a tradition
39:55Every year we come back
39:57Yes
39:57Or Camden at least
39:58Which is basically the same thing
39:59Yeah
40:01Close enough
40:01Spitting distance
40:04Excellent
40:05Lizzie, Joe
