AccuWeather Meteorologist Tony Laubach is preparing to chase severe weather this evening in Texas, as a system of storms is expected in the region Thursday.
Transcript
00:00Well, here we are in the first week of March, and it feels like it's the first week of May,
00:04at least in terms of the severe weather setup we have today across the Texas Panhandle into western Oklahoma.
00:10This is one of many days we'll be looking at here over the next week that have the potential for
00:16severe weather.
00:16Things kicking off later this afternoon in the regions I mentioned earlier.
00:20Left Denver yesterday, worked my way south on I-25 across northeast New Mexico,
00:25and eventually landing myself here in the Texas Panhandle on a rather uneventful drive.
00:30Blue skies pretty much the whole entire way, a much calmer set of skies than we will see later this
00:36afternoon
00:36as I worked my way down I-25 and eventually across 87, working into the Dalhart area,
00:42filling up just at sunset before landing myself in Amarillo for the evening where we'll set up shop for today,
00:48tracking the threats that will likely begin later this afternoon,
00:51starting primarily with large, possibly damaging hail 2-3 inches in diameter and damaging wind gusts.
00:58Tornado threat low to start, but we'll likely see that ramp up a little bit,
01:01especially as we get toward it just after sunset when the low-level jet starts to kick up
01:05and starts to increase that low-level shear near the surface.
01:08Severe weather likely to continue overnight.
01:10Storms will congeal, primarily being a damaging wind threat.
01:13And then we reload for tomorrow over a much wider area, all the way from Iowa down into north Texas.
01:19And again, we'll be tracking an all-hazards threat, hail damaging winds,
01:23and tornado potential with that as well.
01:25Severe weather will continue to shift south toward the Gulf Coast,
01:28kind of resetting for a couple of days, and then we'll be back at it again early next week
01:32as the severe weather threat comes in with the next system early to middle of next week.
