00:00Tech's pouring in. Good morning, 97.1. Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park.
00:05Greg behind the glass. No gov. Still recovering from last night's Red Wing game on the glass.
00:10Got Dear John coming up at 7.35. Advice, courtesy of John Jansen.
00:16Two Grand Slam at 7.25. Any quick teasers?
00:19Oh yeah, sure. I can give you a little look ahead here. We have a question specifically about steelhead fishing.
00:25Oh yeah, baby!
00:27They know who they're asking. Yeah!
00:30Don't ask me about steelhead fishing.
00:31John will give advice on that.
00:33The Will. Some drama involving The Will.
00:37I'll need your help with.
00:38John in college.
00:41Me in college? Or is it another John?
00:44We'll find out in 30 minutes.
00:45And the last one is dealing with death.
00:47A heavier topic. They need your guidance.
00:49The Will and the death.
00:51At least there's steelhead fishing in there for you.
00:52Yes!
00:55Some of the feedback from people.
00:57Says, Brad Holmes is not a GM.
01:00He's a scout.
01:02And that's echoed by another text that says,
01:06Brad Holmes is starting to look like a glorified scout with a GM title.
01:10That's Eric Perry in Detroit.
01:11Well, that's why I mentioned there's a lot of different paths to becoming a general manager.
01:15And his was director of college scouting.
01:19He's come in and initially did a great job of evaluating college players.
01:29Adding them to this team.
01:31Getting this team to a certain point.
01:33But a GM is a job that you have to learn on the job.
01:38And what has he learned over the five years where he has been drafting?
01:43He's had trade deadlines.
01:45He's had free agent periods.
01:47He's had money to spend.
01:49He's been able to redo contracts.
01:51Like, you've got to be able to learn every aspect of the job.
01:55And it feels like he is refusing to adjust or shift his theories as the team is in different situations
02:05and different positions.
02:07So, he got a lot of attention and a lot of praise and accolades, right?
02:10General manager of the year on the way up.
02:13Yeah, twice.
02:13Yeah, two-time executive of the year.
02:16When you're coming up and you've got bonus firsts because you trade Stafford away and you hit on a lot
02:21of those picks and you get all pros firsts.
02:23Yeah, high firsts.
02:24Now, the late first, Terry on Arnold, Tylee Williams is going to need more.
02:29It's easier on the way up.
02:31It's harder once you're in the mix to fight for a championship.
02:35And if you're going to do it stubbornly one way, my guys are the best guys.
02:39I love my own.
02:40I pay my own.
02:40I draft my own.
02:41I'd never make the trade the Rams did yesterday on either side.
02:45I'd never do what KC did and I'd never do what the Rams did.
02:49Boy, that makes it tough.
02:50And I have GM envy because as much as Brad Holm gets praised, there are GMs you'd rather have.
02:56Like Veach, who's done it.
02:59Like Sneed, who's done it.
03:01Like Howie Roseman, who's broken out of the shell and become a very aggressive guy.
03:05John Snyder has done it with two completely different rosters.
03:09He's done a better job than Brad Holm's.
03:11So, you know, a couple years ago we talked like we got the best of the best.
03:15John, I could rifle off four, five, six guys right now that I go there.
03:17They're better general managers than Brad Holm's.
03:19So, I have GM envy because he's not willing to do what other guys are willing to do.
03:25Well, it's just, and when we were talking to that last caller, he was throwing out, you know, Brett Veach.
03:32He was throwing out Les Sneed.
03:33He was throwing out Howie Roseman.
03:35I would put San Francisco in that same category.
03:38And, again, it's not that you can't take a swing and miss.
03:41Of course.
03:42They certainly swung and miss with Trey Lance.
03:45Now, they hit gold with Brock Purdy.
03:47But the rest of that team, Trent Williams, Bosa, you know, they've done all the things that you've got to
03:54do to make up for a bad pick, a very high first-round pick, and still compete for Super Bowls.
04:01Think about it.
04:01The trade they made for CMC.
04:03Yeah.
04:03I mean, they obviously haven't been able to get over that mountaintop.
04:08But they are constantly in the mix.
04:11And even after the setback the year before, you know, John, they were right back in the playoffs again last
04:18year.
04:19And they were, I mean, were they not hurt more than the Lions were?
04:24They were.
04:25Absolutely were.
04:25More impactful defensive injuries?
04:28And they've had to say bye-bye to some players that mattered.
04:30Greenlaw and Hufanga on their defense.
04:32And you reload.
04:33The frustrating part is we all celebrated Brad Holmes for getting us out of the yearly, decades-long hole that
04:45the Lions were in.
04:47Yeah.
04:49But you've got to be able to adjust and make different decisions.
04:54Learn from what went well, what didn't go well.
04:56Learn from what other general managers are doing to get to the Super Bowl.
05:00Learn on the job.
05:02And it feels like he's refusing.
05:04He had a theory coming in.
05:06Mm-hmm.
05:06And he is not going to adjust that theory at all.
05:10No tweaks.
05:10No nothing.
05:11We're going to draft, develop, and sign our own guys.
05:13And if it puts us in salary cap hell, we'll just find a way to restructure and then sign more
05:18of our own guys.
05:20People, he's spot on.
05:22248-539-9797.
05:24Brad Holmes simply had too much success too early.
05:27Built a contender in two or three years.
05:29Got arrogant.
05:30Decided to rest on his laurels.
05:32Now they're on the decline.
05:33It should be put up or shut up time.
05:34But it's the Lions, so it's business as usual.
05:37And we have a season ticket wait list.
05:40Yay.
05:41Sarcasm.
05:42Guys, I agree with what you're saying.
05:44We do need to be careful about the Kansas City route.
05:46They have a generational quarterback.
05:47It can make up for some shortcomings, sending people out.
05:52I mean, yes and no.
05:53I think those are also would be tough decisions.
05:56Do I want to trade Tyreek Hill?
05:59Do I want to trade my starting corner in Legere Sneed and then another starting corner in Trent McDuffie?
06:03A lot of teams wouldn't have the guts to do it.
06:06Those moves help propel them forward.
06:09And they've also gambled on, okay, well, we're going to pay our quarterback.
06:14We're going to pay certain guys, Chris Jones.
06:17We're going to pay Travis Kelsey.
06:19But we're not going to really address the offensive line.
06:25And it cost them a Super Bowl, but it also won them a couple of other Super Bowls.
06:31But they're putting the pieces around and paying the ones that they deem necessary because of the skill set of
06:37their quarterback.
06:38He can run.
06:39He can avoid.
06:40Ours can't.
06:41So what do you have to do?
06:42You've got to give them an offensive line.
06:43You've got to.
06:44They've golf-proofed the offense.
06:46Like you have innumerous weapons.
06:50Oh, this text kind of takes us in that direction, too.
06:52It says Tom Brady was never the top paid quarterback in the league.
06:55The money was distributed to his offense, including making sure they had a premier offensive line, except maybe a year
07:00there.
07:01Jared Goff should redo his deal to pay his linemen.
07:05How much money is enough?
07:09Again, there's a lot of different ways you can do it.
07:12That's one way.
07:13But this is misunderstood.
07:15But it's also, New England was a team that would develop some guys, and then what would they do?
07:20They would trade them before they had to pay them, and then they would go get, albeit they hit it
07:25on Randy Moss, Ty Law.
07:27They would have guys that they would use at the end of their career that still had that one year
07:33left.
07:34They were good about better to be a year early than a year late.
07:37Yes.
07:38I'd rather move on from a guy a year early before he develops a degenerative knee issue, and I don't
07:42know about my safety room.
07:43Right?
07:44Yeah.
07:45I mean, that's, and I'm not saying that the Joseph deal was a deal you don't make at the time,
07:49but if you make those moves 100% of the time, you're going to get burned, and those mistakes are
07:54going to be expensive mistakes.
07:55The Patriots philosophy, in addition to just have the greatest quarterback of all time, was better to be a year
08:00early than a year late.
08:02Yeah.
08:02And, I mean, Brad Holmes could talk about, well, you know, who has two premier defensive ends?
08:08Well, I would ask, who has two number one receivers?
08:12Right.
08:12Now, you had the luxury of having two number one receivers because you drafted both of them.
08:18You paid the best one, and then the second one you could use as a number two who could be
08:25a number one without having to pay him, and that would have been a perfect trade piece.
08:30I know, and if you say his name, it's going to set off a whole different debate, but just use
08:33an example.
08:34DK Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks, trade him away, second round pick.
08:37That's not nearly enough for an alpha number one receiver, right?
08:39Well, that second round pick is how they got Emma Warrier, who was a chess piece big safety that let
08:45them play nickel and stop the run.
08:46It was a huge reason Seattle's defense was the best in football this year.
08:50Like, we don't have to cherry pick.
08:54There's plenty of examples of teams doing this, and we've been handing them out left and right.
08:57And going back to the Goff thing, I think it's misunderstood.
09:00Jerry Goff should want to restructure his contract.
09:03Yes, when you restructure contracts, you're not taking years away.
09:07In fact, you're probably adding years.
09:09You're not taking money away.
09:11You are just shifting the money and guaranteeing more money.
09:15So the reason the Goff deal has not been restructured is a lion's decision as of today.
09:19And I think it will get done.
09:20It has to get done.
09:21Yeah.
09:21But it's a lion's decision.
09:23There's no reason Goff would balk at restructuring his contract.
09:26It's in his best interest.
09:28Let's get to Brad and Waterford.
09:29Brad, you're on 97.1.
09:31Good morning.
09:33How you doing?
09:34Good, good.
09:35Thank you, Sean.
09:36Guys, Brad Holmes isn't bad, but he is far from good.
09:40Okay, this 24 draft has got me, I mean, it's just sports, man, but it's got me so pissed off.
09:47You can make a case now that he has lost an entire draft, especially with Terry and Arnold,
09:54who, first of all, has improved himself, second of all, is going to be off the roster.
10:00What he does is, right up your alley, guys, he extends these guys too early, thinking,
10:06oh, we can get them on the cheap now.
10:08It doesn't matter.
10:09You can't go and extend and extend and extend.
10:12All right?
10:12Joseph, I don't have a problem with.
10:14Campbell, you've got to extend.
10:16But you've got luxury in Jamison Williams.
10:18You've got luxury in Sam LaPorter.
10:20There's studs.
10:21You've got luxury in Jameer Gibbs.
10:22Why are we?
10:23Why are we?
10:25Why?
10:25Why this early with Gibbs?
10:27I mean, Valente, who is not really a fan favorite of mine, but he's right.
10:31You run him in the ground.
10:32If he doesn't like it, too bad.
10:34But Brad Holmes is not good.
10:37Well, he's good.
10:38The question is, he's just not great.
10:41I won't say, like, I don't want to go too far one way.
10:44I think Brad Holmes has done a good job.
10:46But greatness is holding the Lombardi trophy.
10:49Greatness is not holding back and using every tool at your disposal.
10:52Greatness is looking beyond your own roster and your own draft picks and your own re-signings
10:56to make the best football team.
10:58So I think I'd say good, not great.
11:00But Cookies, explain to me how good it's losing.
11:05Not losing to a couple, you know, players that didn't hit.
11:08Cookies losing an entire freaking draft.
11:11Oh, and this past year's draft is not exactly stellar either, except for Ratliff.
11:16Tyreek Williams, maybe, but you didn't have to get him that early.
11:20Appreciate it, Brad.
11:21It's a good phone call.
11:21Well, got Deerjohn coming up at 735.
11:26The two grand slam at 725.
11:28Chance to win $2,000.
11:30Can you get all 10 right?
11:31Let's get to Heather's news as well.
11:32It's coming up next, 97.1.
