00:00Obviously, when Love went third was a big deal.
00:02When Tate went fourth was a big deal.
00:04For us, when Styles went seventh was a big deal.
00:09We had to kind of get into scramble mode at that point.
00:11But by far, the biggest shocker came at 13 when the Rams took Ty Simpson,
00:20the Alabama quarterback.
00:22We had a conversation yesterday, I believe, about maybe these rumors
00:27that the Rams are interested in Simpson.
00:31And White Brian said, Sean McVay is not that dumb.
00:35Last night, the Rams draft Ty Simpson.
00:39And they drafted him early at 13.
00:41Yep.
00:42And you and I were talking about it, and Tana and BC were there.
00:45We're all just kind of, oh my gosh, you believe this happened.
00:48And I want to point out a few different things, right?
00:51If we had had this conversation around Halloween,
00:56when Ty Simpson was like a Heisman candidate
00:59and Bama was playing really good football
01:02and they had just beaten Georgia and they beat Missouri on the road
01:05and they beat Tennessee, that could have made a lot of sense.
01:09The second half of the season, however, Simpson was not good.
01:14He had a good game against Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
01:17Shout out to White Brian.
01:18It's not hard to do.
01:19He had a really good second half in the comeback win on the road
01:23against Oklahoma in the first round of the college football playoff.
01:26He was dreadful against Indiana.
01:29Now, the whole Alabama offense was.
01:31But Simpson going 13, there's this assumption, okay,
01:37he's going to back up Matt Stafford,
01:39and Sean McVay's got to love this pick because Sean McVay gets to develop
01:43this young quarterback maybe for a year, maybe two,
01:46before he even sees the field.
01:48Yeah.
01:48Because Stafford gets to do what he wants, right?
01:52Mm-hmm.
01:53But as the reporting unfolded last night surrounding this pick,
01:59it got weird in a hurry.
02:02Very.
02:03And it didn't take much to see that just when you watch the press conferences,
02:11and I didn't really get a chance to watch much of this until I got back
02:15to the hotel room at, like, midnight, and I was trying to go to sleep
02:17because I had to wake up at 5 to drive home and stuff.
02:20But, like, just watching the body language in the press conferences,
02:25Les Snead, the Rams general manager, was doing all the talking.
02:28And McVay almost seemed pissed.
02:33He seemed pissed, and he seemed like,
02:36I told you we don't need this player,
02:39and he went and did it anyway on his own.
02:44And the information has popped up now.
02:46So Albert Breer this morning reported,
02:50Rams general manager Les Snead and UT Martin,
02:53University of Tennessee Martin coach, Jason Simpson,
02:56have a very strong relationship.
02:58Ty's dad.
02:59To the point where Snead helped advise the family
03:02when Jason's son, Ty, was making a decision
03:04on whether or not to declare for the draft.
03:07Now, Ty Simpson is a ram.
03:10Weird.
03:11It later comes out, Tom Pellicero reported this this morning on NFL Network,
03:18Sean McVay has never met Ty Simpson.
03:22And when you couple all that,
03:24when you couple that information together
03:25with just the visible look of McVay.
03:31Disdain.
03:32Disdain.
03:33Yeah.
03:34Now, is it possible Snead, the GM,
03:38who's supposed to look at the overall future of the organization,
03:42and McVay, who wants to win a Super Bowl,
03:46and if you're watching on Monumental,
03:48look at Sean McVay compared to Les Snead
03:50during this conversation
03:51because the visuals are pretty telling here.
03:54And there's no real good Sean McVay audio to play
03:57because he barely spoke about the pick.
03:59All right?
04:01Is it possible that Snead is looking at the overall well-being
04:05of the organization
04:06and considering that Stafford had this back issue last year,
04:10what are we going to do down the road?
04:11Whereas McVay is looking at this as,
04:15what can we do this year to win a Super Bowl?
04:19And does Ruben Bain help us accomplish that?
04:21Who's on the board?
04:22Does Kenyon Sadiq help us accomplish that?
04:25Who's on the board?
04:26You know what I mean?
04:27Like, does Makai Lemon, an L.A. kid that played at USC,
04:31does he help us accomplish that?
04:33And he's on the board.
04:34Especially when you consider Devontae Adams is up there in age
04:38and Puka Nakua, I was talking to some L.A. people last night
04:42and you always hear this about celebrities
04:44that they get into this L.A. lifestyle
04:46and it's maybe not the healthiest thing for them.
04:49I think there's questions about Puka Nakua's lifestyle right now
04:52and they might have to commit a ton of money to him.
04:56It's possible that this was the GM trying to look long-term
04:59and the head coach looking straight ahead.
05:02But it seems like more than that.
05:04I don't buy it.
05:05But I think the GM was doing a favor.
05:09Nobody was picking him at 13.
05:13But when it comes out that you were a family advisor
05:17and you're friends with the dad
05:18and then you pick him at that early
05:20and your coach hadn't met him
05:22and don't seem like he did,
05:23that's something that I think is fireable.
05:29Especially if you did it to do a favor.
05:33Because Sean's saying,
05:35oh, he's going to compete against Stidham.
05:38Stetson.
05:39Stetson, yeah.
05:39Stetson did.
05:40He did not act like he was going to have a chance
05:43to try to be being a starter or coming behind Matt.
05:47He said he'll compete against,
05:48and he seemed pissed.
05:50There was nothing that suggested when McVay spoke
05:55that he was really excited about getting a long-term quarterback answer
05:59once Stafford retires.
06:02And, dude, you've got to assume,
06:04and I think McVay said they did,
06:06but you have got to assume they called Stafford
06:10and said, yo, we're about to draft this kid.
06:13But we haven't heard at all how Stafford feels about it.
06:16Do you think they called him?
06:18In that situation of watching McVay,
06:21you think they called Stafford?
06:24Because Stafford is McVay's dude.
06:26I don't know if he's the other dude.
06:32You know what I'm saying?
06:34Totally.
06:34Because the look on McVay's face doesn't say anything about,
06:38we did this in unison.
06:41No.
06:42And one thing about it, like, a lot of times,
06:45coordinator, I mean, head coaches and GMs,
06:48they're not 100% in agreeance,
06:52but they can give that.
06:55That right there shows me that they weren't even close to agreeing.
07:01I mean, it's not a reach to say,
07:04when you watch those clips,
07:07McVay looks very pissed off at what they did.
07:09Yes.
07:10And, dude,
07:12it's worth pointing out that Les Snead
07:15has a pretty damn good track record.
07:17Trades, drafts.
07:19Les Snead has been good.
07:22But, like, if you're Stan Kroenke,
07:24and now, perhaps,
07:26you've got a significant divide
07:27between McVay and Snead?
07:30He needs to, I mean,
07:32I think I know who I'm picking.
07:33Kroenke needs to really understand
07:35that this was a deal that we did
07:38because the guy we thought was that good.
07:41Not that this was my friend's son.
07:46You better be damn clear on that.
07:48Yeah, because that's what it seems like to me.
07:49You better be damn clear on that.
07:52And I think, you know,
07:53even those allegations and suggestions
08:01really muddy the waters.
08:03And, I mean,
08:04you did something that was
08:06pretty shocking.
08:08I really thought Arizona
08:09was going to trade up
08:10into the bottom five of the draft
08:12and take Simpson.
08:13And I think there was some consensus thought
08:16around that.
08:16To go 13th overall,
08:19I mean, the prospects that were there.
08:22Yeah.
08:25Caleb Banks,
08:26big D tackle out of Florida.
08:29I mean,
08:30there's just so many directions
08:32you could have gone there.
08:33That one,
08:35that's a thread that will be pulled.
08:37Everybody was shocked
08:38at that damn stadium.
08:40Dude,
08:40I cannot wait
08:42till we finally get
08:44public comments
08:45from Matt Stafford.
08:46Good,
08:46I can see you next time.
